I dunno if any of y'all read korean fantasy novels but like I just wanna talk about Under the oak tree. This is a story that actually lets you judge the characters by yourself without the author gaslighting you into liking them or something. And they are very believable. Trauma can't be erased in just a few months because of a person and its the same with confidence it won't just sprout in you over night, your insecurities won't just disappear as easily as that. I love how the author remembers that and reminds us that our female lead has been through abuse all her life. She had always been physically and verbally abused by her father and all those years of abuse won't just suddenly disappear just because she finally has someone who loves her. Because even then the insecurities are still there Maxi is still insecure and lacks confidence she shakes with anxiety just thinking how her husband would hate her when he finds out she's not a pampered noble lady but an abused one. I love how real she feels and how real her fears are. And I love how she didn't become this brave strong woman because of her husband who encouraged her and stuff instead she became one because she wanted to even if it was for him it was still because she wanted to, to be much more than she was then she wanted to help him with all she had. I think this is the first korean fantasy story where she becomes capable because she wanted to not because of a man's encouragement.

My venture into manhwa/webtoons via 🐑to has largely shown me that it's not my genre/medium, but I have to say the one that stands out and which I couldn't not get into is Under the Oak Tree. Definitely a romance of the variety which takes itself seriously. The original novels in themselves are spectacular (I read ahead to see what happened cause the webtoon episodes are still being released each week, and frankly there's a lot to go) but they really did an excellent job with the adaptation too. I mean just look at my girl Maxi:

The colors, the expressions...you can almost see her moving and breathing. It's just beautiful art, and it applies to all the other characters too btw.

As for the male lead Riftan, he's extremely well-done too. A lot of manhwa/shoujo/webtoon MLs are tropey/stock character-y for me. They don't get any unique or interesting quirks, singular expressions, or awkward angles. I think Riftan manages to break the mould well. He's a very deep, well-thought-out character with an intensity that is palpable and often leads to genuinely awkward situations.

Like don't get me wrong, he's a Tumblr werewolf-tiddied overprotective knight who's so big he looks like he's a different species from Maxi, but at least Under the Oak Tree gives him a backstory to explain why he's like that which is compelling and makes sense. Plus with a lot of shoujo MLs who are the Strongest Knight in the Land™ it's like, his personality is way too good for that to be believable. But Riftan's personality sucks bad enough that it's like, "Yeah I could believe it with that guy."

Reading through the manhwa of Under The Oak Tree is always fun, but I totally forgot about this scene from the corresponding novel which would obviously be included. This is from season 3, (episode 83).

Poor Riftan having no idea of anatomy or menstruation absolutely sent me, really goes to show how different his upbringing was.

We even have some symbolism here. Like a bird who is finally able to spread her wings and fly in the skies. Or white flowers that are actually zephyrlilies (rainflowers) and symbolize rebirth and new beginning as Maxi becomes much stronger and more confident 🙏

I love how we see the friendship between Maxi and Idsilla grow in front of our eyes. Maxi becomes more comfortable and shows more affection to Idsilla as time goes on and I love to see Maxi grow as a character.
