I went on Etsy to look for something and, because of previous purchases, I saw someone selling custom cassette mixtapes... for a minimum of 20 bucks all the way to 50 bucks depending on your order.
...
You can buy a 5 pack of blank Maxwell 90 minute tapes for 13 bucks. There are brand new basic cassette recorders (that can also convert cassette recordings to MP3s) for 20-36 bucks. Either use the inbuilt mic or get one with a mic jack to plug into a computer. You could have 5 mixtapes for the price of a single custom mixtape. And then keep making more mixtapes yourself. This isn't even a "the materials are cheap, but the time and effort spent making it justifies the price" thing. The time to make one is just the runtime your playlist, stopping halfway to flip the tape and record on the other side (just make sure that the runtime doesn't go over). There might be a bit of a learning curve for younger folks not used to tapes, but I swear it's not some difficult and mystical process that justifies paying 50 bucks for a single cassette tape. You can even do other things while it's recording.

Linda Smith — Nothing Else Matters/I So Liked Spring (Captured Tracks)
Tumblr media
In 2021 Captured Tracks released Till Another Time: 1988-96, a collection of recordings by Baltimore musician Linda Smith. Culled from Smith’s trove of cassette recordings, this was the first time Smith’s music had been pressed to vinyl.
Bedroom recording has long held an allure, but that release was timely. Smith, trailblazer of home taping, was already known and loved in certain pockets, especially among DIY musicians. But Till Another Time connected with pandemic-era listeners, many of whom were exploring their own isolated musical setups.
Smith’s home recording was born of its own sort of necessity. She played in a few bands over the years, including Woods, which performed at Maxwell’s and CBGB in the 1980s. But she never loved performing live.  “I knew I wasn’t a rock star,” she told the Baltimore Banner last year. “But I still wanted to make music.” While in Woods she bought her first 4 track recorder, hoping to get her ideas out in a way that her bandmates could understand.  For the first time, she said in a 1991 Popwatch interview, “my songs really seemed to belong to me.”
This past March Captured Tracks reissued two of Smith’s records, Nothing Else Matters and I So Liked Spring, originally released in 1995 and 1996, respectively. By the mid- '90st Smith had graduated from a 4-track recorder to a Fostex 8-track, allowing her to explore more sophisticated compositions.
As a kid Smith was a fan of the Beatles and Motown and spent a lot of time listening to AM radio, which imbued her with a strong sense of pop structures. Later she got into the Raincoats and Young Marble Giants, artists she admired and resembled both musically and philosophically: Clearly none of them were in it for fame and fortune.
Nothing Else Matters includes a cover of Young Marble Giants’  “Salad Days” which retains the stately simplicity of the original but doubles the runtime, extending it with layers of hysterical laughter and a soft roar of distant conversation. This marriage of minimalist elegance and woozy playfulness is typical of the record. It’s full of boney drum beats and  “96 Tears”-esque Wurlitzer-y riffs, cool garage-rock hooks, clever melodies, dry humor and smart, idiosyncratic lyrics.
For I So Liked Spring Smith set music to the poems of late 19th/early 20th century poet Charlotte Mew. It's slightly softer around the edges than Nothing Else Matters but the tunes still twist in unexpected directions as Smith, a worthy and convincing ambassador, shapes her compositions around Mew’s words. In their relative simplicity these songs bloom with each listen.
Generally, Smith told the Women in Sound zine in 2015, she’d start with a sample beat, then she’d layer guitar, keyboard, and more guitar to fill things out, then vocals and handheld percussion. “I never had a very expensive microphone,” she said, “and sometimes preferred cheaper ones to get an interesting sound.”
As the glut of pandemic-era Bandcamp releases proved, a home recording is only as good as the artist behind it. Smith — a skilled writer and intuitive arranger — didn’t give herself many places to hide within her recordings, and she didn’t have to. As with her simple instrumentation Smith knows how to work the unique dynamics of her slightly husky, untrained voice. Sometimes wistful, sometimes sardonic, sometimes exuberant, it all sparkles.

The Cookout Playlist by @tllgrrl aka Nefertiri Jones
For the @sarahbuckybingo 2023 SarahBucky Summer Prompts Fest: Week 1 - “Cookout”
* * * * * * * * * *
Part 1.
The food and drink at the Cookout was, of course, outstanding.
Not only did Sarah make some favorites, Sam was the Pitmaster, and various dishes were also brought by guests.
This time Bucky made a cake instead of buying one at the market like he had the first time he attended a Wilson cookout.
And, of course, there was music.
The Wilson family record collection is filled with music from the 1930s to the present. Records bought and gifted, added to the collection, then passed to the next generation.
Both Sam and Sarah’s parents loved jazz. Louie, Billie, Ella, Duke, Bird, Miles, and also New Orleans artists like Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, The Meters.
And there’s Motown that spanned decades, Supremes, Temps, Jacksons, Marvin.
Sam and Sarah’s favourites joined the collection as well, in the form of cassettes, then CDs: Missy, Beyonce, Blackstreet, Queen Latifa, Justin, Will Smith, Maxwell.
Sam starts putting his Cookout playlists together weeks in advance. Sarah, and even Cass & AJ put in requests.
Bucky even put in a song request when they were pinned down by gunfire in Madripoor…once again.
“Hey, Sam,” he asks, hoping Sam didn’t see him start to blush, “do you think you could add that song by that singer Sarah likes?”
“Add? What song? Oh. Look, we’ll discuss it later. Cover me, I’m heading over to the side of that building over to the right.”
“Got it. Ready? Go!”
Sam makes a break for it, and Bucky keeps the shooters occupied while softly singing to himself:
“If it’s cool…we can do a little…somethin’…“
To be continued…
* * * * *
The actual #sarahbucky summer playlist is longer, there are reactions to some of the songs, and Sarah & Bucky get away for a little time to themselves later in the evening. But for now, here are the tunes. Fix yourself a plate, grab a glass (or bottle) of your favourite cookout libation, and enjoy. If you need to get up and dance, no problem. Your plate will still be there when you get back.

My friend Lake (@breakcoreboxcat ) and I made fanganronpa together. It's called The Doctor's Killing Game because all the characters have a doctor connection. They are all based off of songs so like. Yippee. They will all be below the cut, most of the summaries are by Lake.
Protagonist: Mason Heckle (he/him), Ultimate Antiques Salesman, "The Haunted Phonograph" (Parents were doctors)
Mason is a slightly bitter young man due to his mother abandoning him when he was younger. (His parents are divorced, his brother is Terrence) He got into selling antiques to keep himself fed. He struggles a bit with communication outside of selling things, but has a peculiar eye for details.
Antagonist: Cassette Tuwoo (fuck/you), Ultimate Conspiracy Theorist "Touch Tone Telephone" (Thought was insane)
Cassette thoroughly researches any theory he has before he subscribes to it as he doesn't believe any humans deserve to be hated upon unnecessarily. He does believe aliens exist but thinks that everything is a big experiment done on them all. He overthinks everything but often misses the bigger picture picking apart the details. Drinks coffee a lot.
Dr. Terrence Tich (he/him), Ultimate Taxidermist "Terry's Taxidermy" (Taxidermied self)
Terrence lived alone for a few years after his dad died. He started out taxiderming animals (his first was his cat Mango), and after his father died he taxidermied his dad so he wouldn't be alone. He has a friend who is the Cabinet Man (Cabby). He has so many things wrong with him.
Rose Serif (she/her), Ultimate Forger "Babooshka" (Forged doctor's notes) (Killed By Doc) (accident)
Does not like physical touch, rose lalonde energy, very distant from people but truly cares about the group. She does have a sense of humor we swear, she also gave Doctor Amnesia the nickname Doc.
Blake Inferno (she/her), Ultimate Rebel "Hit and Run" (Brother is doctor) (Kills Zachariah and Honey)
Punk, will beat the self care into you, parents are actually pretty loaded but she doesnt have the "rich kid mindset", gets along well with Carey and Rosey, kills Zachariah as vengeance for killing Honey
Marsha Tnakk (she/her), Ultimate Psychiatrist "Marsha, Thankk you for the Dialects but I need you to Leave now" (A doctor)
Usually pretty quiet, aroace. Hates when people abuse their power over others. She always looks put together because it just makes sense for her. She can be VERY abrasive is you deserve it.
Doctor Amnesia (he/him or they/them [doesn't care]), Ultimate ???, "Amnesia was her name" (???) (Accidentally killed Rose)
Has amnesia, doesnt remember most things about himself, favorite food is spahgetti :)
Maxwell House (he/him), Ultimate Doctor, "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" (Doctor) (Kills Rosy)
He doesn't have a doctorate. He probably shouldn't be practicing medicine he is a little deranged, but just a little. Least mad of the mad scientists.
Dolly Patch (they/it), Ultimate Creation, "Amagdalya's Ragdoll" (Made by Zachariah)
Skrunkly lad, leaned into the whole zombie aethstetic, mixed feelings on its creator, their fursona is named Dr.Patch
Zachariah Sutre (he/him) (whore), Ultimate Surgeon, "Zydrate Anatomy" (Doctor) (Kills Honey, Killed by Blake)
WHORE. He looks super suave and everything but he is a bit of a slob and a total messy eater. Talks down to people a lot and has an incredibly dirty mind. He made Dolly because he wanted to prove he could. Calls himself a dad because of it.
Honey Hostel (She/her [he/him unlocked at friendship level 25]), Ultimate Sacrificial Lamb/Martyr "Honey I'm Home" (Doctor didn't work turn to Jesus) (Killed by Zachariah)
Did something weird once(1) and her parents freaked out about it, doctors couldn't fix their child to they converted to christianity, honey had no say in any of this, no was never an option that crossed her mind, is very much a believer in god, does not like touching people (humans), does in fact get vivisected
Cary Coupling (she/her), Ultimate Railroad Worker, "Cog in the Machine" (Field Medic)
Cares about everyone sooo much but never learned to take care of herself, did not get paid actual money while working on the railroad (cool gay dads couldnt stop her from getting sucked into the workforce but nontheless tried their best, she loves her dads :) she can cook
Blister Quick (they/them), Ultimate Arsonist, "Burn Him Down!" (Used to be in and out of the hospital a lot)
House burned down when they were like 5 which sparked their intrest in fire, comfortable in their own skin but everyone else is uncomfy with their burn scars so they cover them, poor kid energy (skrunkle)
Bolt 'Sparky' Cortex (he/they), Ultimate Patient "The Mind Electric" (Patient) (Killed by Scottie)
Parents(?) Consented to have an experiment performed on them without talking to them first, is clinically insane now, forgot his original name so renamed himself bolt, not named after the movie but still likes it
Scottie Boyle (she/her), Ultimate Therapist, "Self Care" (Doctor) (Kills Bolt)
Comes from a family of therapists, was forced into being a therapist, could never talk about her problems, decided to be kind of a bitch about it (fair tbh)
Rosy Parker (she/her), Ultimate Model "Oh No!" (Monitored at all times) (Killed by Maxwell)
Has been in beauty pageants since she was like 3, generally just forced into everything, has been oversexualised from too young of an age, constantly monitored by doctors and health professionals to make sure shes "perfect", asked Maxwell to kill her just so she could have the thrill, girl needs therapy so bad :(
Mastermind: Rick Splosion (he/him [derogatory]), Ultimate Party Crasher "Don't Threaten me with a Good Time" (Breaks into hospitals to steal drugs)
Got rejected by Marsha and did a killing game about it, everyone hates him, (his execution is a forced wedding originally set up for marsha)
First Trial (All my towers crumble down): Scottie kills Bolt
Second Trial (One track mind, one track heart): Maxwell kills Rosy
Third Trial (Sometimes I wonder why I need you at all): Zachariah kills Honey, Blake kills Zachariah
Fourth Trial (I remember when I realized she wasn't there): Doctor Amnesia (accidentally) kills Rose
Fifth Trial (Reason it out with the heads I've sewn): Self Taxidermy
Sixth Trial (A crow knows no smell of carbon monoxide): Rick tries to kill Marsha
Cary, Blister, Mason, Cassette, Dolly are left

For the early 2000s thing. Sorry mines are music related💀💀
I know for a fact that Louis was an Aliyah and TLC stan.
Lestat heard Confessions II by usher and never felt more validated in his life. In fact he had that entire damn album on repeat constantly.
I know Lestat and Louis were all for the R&B sex jams during sex. They both heard Untitled by D’Angelo and immediately added it to the sex cassette tape.
Crazysexycool and Fanmail is on REPEAT 🗣️
Also One in a Million by Aaliyah is a personal favorite 😌
NOT CONFESSIONS II 😭 He was FEELING. IT. Honorable mention for Pretty Wings by Maxwell bc he was screaming this song from the bottom of the Dubai Penthouse trying to win his love back 😭
Louis and Lestat are just like me bc they think that R&B slow jams are superior forms of music, like Untitled by D’Angelo, Like a Tattoo by Sade, and Say Yes by Floetry STAYS ON during sex 😤
….y’all should I make a Lestat and Louis 90s/Early 2000s R&B playlist 👀

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors is a 1987 horror-fantasy film, and the sequel to A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge.
It is the third film in the A Nightmare on Elm Street film series.
The film received mixed to positive reviews. It was directed by Chuck Russell, written by original creator Wes Craven and co-written by Bruce Wagner, and starred Craig Wasson, Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, and Patricia Arquette in her first role.
Plot
Kristen Parker is in her room.
First she tears open a bag of Gold Medal flour. Then she pours to flour into a bowl. She adds liquid and stirs the mixture with a wooden spoon. She then pours the mixture into another bowl.
She cuts out pieces of newspapers with a pair of scissors.
It is revealed that she is making a model of the Elm Street House.
Kristen nearly falls asleep, so she turns up the volume on her cassette player.
She eats a spoonfull of ground Maxwell House coffee and drinks a gulp of Diet Coke.
Elaine Parker walks into the room and pushes the stop button on Kristen's cassette player.
Elaine says the music could have woken up the entire neighborhood.
A guest asks Elaine where she keeps the Bourbon. She responds that she'll be right down.
Elaine leaves the room.
Kristen falls asleep.
In a dream, Kristen finds herself and her bed in front of the Elm Street House.
Also in front of the house are three children playing jump rope, two children throwing a ball to each other, and one child riding a tricycle.
Kristen gets out of the bed and walks toward the house.
She follows the child on the tricycle into the house.
She goes down to the basement.
The girl on the tricycle is down there.
The basement now seems to be mixed with the Boiler Room.
Kristen picks the girl off her tricycle and runs with her.
The girl appears to have turned into a large doll.
Kristen ends up in a room filled with teenagers hung from nooses.
Kristen appears to wake up in her bed, in her room.
She walks into her half bathroom.
In her half bathroom, she becomes restrained by Freddy and he slashes her wrists. She wakes up. Kristen's mother finds her awake with her wrist cut and a razor in her hands, which makes it appear like an attempted suicide. She passes out.
Kristen is taken to County General, though this part isn't actually shown.
Kristen is taken to the Westin Hills Psychiatric Hospital for observation. When the orderly tries to sedate her, she loses control and defends herself with a scalpel. While singing Freddy's jump rope rhyme, Nancy Thompson enters the room and completes the last verse. Kristen immediately feels a bond with Nancy and hugs her.
By this time, all the Elm Street Children have been killed by Freddy except for a few who are committed to Westin Hills Psychiatric Hospital. Aside from Kristen, the survivors are: Roland Kincaid, Phillip Anderson, Jennifer Caulfield, Will Stanton, Taryn White, and Joey Crusel. Nancy Thompson is a graduate student researching dreams and is assigned there for research purposes.
Neil Gordon, the psychiatrist assigned to the children, at first is apprehensive about Nancy's presence. He tells her that he believes the children are suffering from a group delusion and will g to any extremes not to sleep. In a talk with her, he discovers by accident that Nancy is taking a drug known as Hypnocil. Later research shows that it is an experimental drug that is not yet approved by the FDA and is used to suppress dreams.
Nancy goes to speak to Kristen's mom, only to discover the house that Kristen made a model of. She brings it to her own home.
That night, in the Dream World, the tricycle comes into Kristen's hospital room.
Freddy attacks Kristen, turning into a snake and trying to eat her, but Kristen pulls Nancy into her dream. Though startled, Nancy is able to repel Freddy long enough for Kristen to pull them out of the dream.
A series of events happens the following day. Nancy learns more about Kristen's ability to pull people into her dreams. Then, Nancy is introduced to the kids through a group session. Having dinner together, Nancy requests that Neil prescribe Hypnocil to the patients, but he refuses. Meanwhile, Freddy controls Phillip like a puppet using his tendons, and severs them with his claw, causing him to fall out the window, making it appear as a suicide.
At the group session the following day, Simms has decided that all patient rooms will be locked and that their will be a policy of evening sedation going forward. Kincaid protests and "earns" himself a night in the quiet room. Neil is so rattled by what happens that he convinces Simms to start prescribing Hypnocil, which they attempt to get the next day.
Later that evening, Jennifer convinces Max to let her stay awake and watch TV. She falls asleep and Freddy's arms and head come out of the TV. He grabs Jennifer and tells her "This is it, Jennifer- your big break in TV! Welcome to prime time, bitch!". He then pulls her into the TV screen, killing her.
While attending Jennifer's funeral, Neil notices a nun walking by the gravestones. Upon reaching her, she gives her name as Sister Mary Helena. Upon telling the sister that his faith is science, the nun tells him it is a sad choice. She tells him the only way to save the children is to put the unclean spirit to rest. Before he can ask her any questions, Nancy appears and the nun is gone.
Neil is confused by all the strange events going on, so Nancy decides to tell him about Freddy. Nancy, Neil, Kincaid, Taryn, Will, Joey, and Kristen do a group hypnosis, and all enter the dream world simultaneously in which Kincaid, Taryn, Will, and Kristen all have special powers. Joey sneaks off after a nurse whom he has a crush on, who turns out to be Freddy in disguise. He traps him above a flaming pit, leaving him in a coma unable to awake from his nightmare.
The cause of Joey's coma is believed by Simms and Dr. Carver, the dean of medicine of Westin Hills, to be the Hypnocil, and Nancy and Neil are subsequently relieved of duty. Although originally promising to listen to the children, Simms has an immediate falling out with Kristen and sedates her and isolates her in the quiet room.
Neil once again sees Sister Mary Helena going to the abandoned part of the hospital.
-
THIS SECTIONS NEEDS WORK.
-
The sister tells him the story of why the hospital wing was shut down. A nun was locked in with inmates in an insane asylum and raped hundreds of times by the inmates. She was eventually rescued and gave birth to Freddy, whom the sister refers to as "The bastard son of a hundred maniacs." She tells Neil to put Freddy's bones to rest on holy ground. Nancy's father, Donald Thompson, now an alcoholic, is the only one who knows where they are. Neil and Nancy go to Little Nemo's. Upon confronting him, Donald continues to not believe that Freddy Krueger survived his physical death and refuses to show Nancy and Neil where the bones are. Nancy receives a call from the Dream Warriors (Taryn, Will, and Kincaid) saying that Kristen is going to be sedated and placed into the quiet room. Neil tells Nancy to go protect the kids while he stays behind to speak to Donald.
Neil finally convinces Donald to show him where the bones are hidden by physically threatening him. He picks up some holy water and a crucifix at a church, and they go to Penny Bros. Auto Salvage where they find Freddy's bones and begin to dig a grave. Donald tries to escape several times, but Neil makes him stay for the funeral.
Upon arriving at the hospital, Max refuses to let Nancy see Kristen. However, Nancy does convince him to let her say goodbye to the other kids. Nancy takes them to another room and they have a second hypnosis session to begin the final fight. Kincaid, Taryn and Will enter the dream world with Nancy, but are immediately separated. Taryn, who uses switchblades in the dream world, attacks Freddy, but he turns his fingers into syringes and injects them into Taryn, killing her. He then sends a spiked wheelchair after Will, who in the real world is in a wheelchair, but can walk and use magic in the dream world. Will destroys the spiked chair with his magic and zaps Freddy, but he is unaffected and stabs Will dead. Nancy, Kristen, and Kincaid rescue Joey from the flaming pit. They attack Freddy, but he is stronger than before. He reveals that when he kills his victims, he takes their souls and holds them captive inside him, giving him strength. In the middle of the battle, Freddy vanishes.
As Neil and Donald are about to bury Freddy's bones, Freddy takes control of the bones and attacks Neil. Donald finally believes that Freddy came back after his physical death and tries to kill him again, but Freddy stabs him and throws him up against a piece of metal, impaling and killing him. Freddy then throws Neil into the grave but does not bother to finish him off and he re-enters the dream world.
Back in the dream world, Freddy creates a room full of mirror images of himself. The images begin to pull the remaining dream warriors in. Joey, however, discovers his voice and shatters the mirrors. Nancy believes this is the end of Freddy. Suddenly, Donald appears and apologizes to Nancy for not believing her and for causing all of this trouble. As Nancy hugs him, Donald reveals himself to be Freddy and finally kills Nancy, much to his happiness. Kristen, in a fit of rage fights Freddy but is overpowered. Meanwhile, although wounded, Neil manages to throw the bones into the grave, pours holy water on them and throws the crucifix onto the skull. Freddy is destroyed. Kristen mourns Nancy and says she will dream Nancy into a wonderful dream forever.
At Nancy's funeral, Neil discovers that Sister Mary Helena was really the spirit of Amanda Krueger, Freddy's mother.

Box Office
The film released theatrically in the United States by New Line Cinema in February 1987. It opened in 1,343 theaters, grossing $8.9 million and debuting at number 1 during its opening weekend. It eventually made $44,793,222 at the domestic box office, making it both the highest grossing film for the studio that year and the 24th highest grossing film of 1987. It is the third highest grossing of the original Nightmare movies after Freddy vs. Jason and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, and the fourth highest grossing film of the series after the release of 2010 remake.
Critical Reception
The film received mixed to positive reviews from critics and audiences. It has garnered an average score of 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 32 professional reviews. It is almost unanimously considered the best Nightmare film after the original, but still received some negative reviews from critics because of the comedic themes present in the film; director Chuck Russell said in an interview he felt it needed to be taken down a different path, making Freddy fun to keep the audience entertained instead of being dark and scary over and over again. Roger Ebert gave the film 1 and a half stars out of 4.
In Queensland, Australia, Dream Warriors was banned by the then Bjelke-Petersen government due to its drug references, particularly the scene where Freddy's glove becomes a number of syringes as he injects his victim with a heroin overdose. In 1990, the newly elected Goss government abolished the Queensland Film Board of Review. Consequently, Dream Warriors became available to Queenslanders through normal market channels rather than just through sympathetic video rental stores.

Soundtrack
The theme song of the movie, "Dream Warriors", was written and performed by the American heavy metal band Dokken. The success of the single led to the following sequels to include a heavy metal song in its soundtrack.
In the original VHS release of the film, during the opening sequence, a hard rock instrumental version of the song "Quiet Cool" is playing. The original version of that song, performed by Joe Lamont, was written for the movie with the same name in 1986. When Dream Warriors was released on DVD, the song that was on the original theatrical release, "Into the Fire" by Dokken, was reinserted.
Trivia
Kristen making the model of the house at 1428 Elm Street resembles The scene of Freddy making his glove in the first film.
Freddy's famous line was improvised, originally, when Freddy kills Jennifer, he was only going to say, "This is it Jennifer, your big break in TV." but Robert England came up with, "Welcome to Prime Time Bitch!"

UGH THE PERFECT ENDING WAS SO GOOD WHAT THE FUCK. so much gayer than i was prepared for
i have only 2 questions: 1) if lenna managed to fix the glitch in a way that reversed lance and the elder's deaths...... why did she remain in human form 2) wheres maxwell in the ending :( off enjoying his potatoes while the rest of the kingdom drowns in pizza i guess
i guess the answer to #1 could be found somewhere in the final fight and/or the fact that she was the one to put everything back in the fridge... idk! who cares. that was really fun.
god! somehow it didnt occur to me. even though you SEE them in one of the corrupted memories. that the mystery items you collect needed to go back in the fridge in the first place
aauuUUUGGHHHH i cant wait!!! to get through cassette beasts and find out what the Fuck is up with the glitches there!! and will they introduce legend of lance!!!! like i don't expect any characters from lenna's inception to appear (altho i AM dying to find out the archangel connection) but given that the diary book 1) definitely comes from the cassette beasts universe 2) directly references legend of lance being in development, i'm hoping that there's a nod to that somewhere! but also that book doesn't seem like it's an isekai situation...? intriguing mysteries. also its entirely possible some of the underlying details have since changed since this game cam eout in 2020. ughhhhh this game is so good what th e ufck!!!!

Helden (issue #4) YEAR: 1986 CREATED BY: Maurice Maxwell, William Maxwell and various contributors LOCATION: Dundonald SIZE: A4 WHAT'S INSIDE.... Helden was one of the Northern Irish fanzines that followed in the footsteps of punk and post-punk pioneers like No Fun and Alternative Ulster, and ensured that zines continued to be an integral part of the local music scene during the 1980s. This issue features Cruella De Ville (a post-punk band from Belfast that split up the year before) and a band from Derry called Tie The Boy. There's also an interview with Keith McCormick who ran local independent label One By One, which emerged to fill the gap left by Terri Hooley's Good Vibrations (although Hooley's label went out of business in 1982, the Good Vibrations record shop was still up and running according to an ad on page 27). The "Local News" section mentions the commercial success being enjoyed by Feargal Sharkey, That Petrol Emotion and Andy White. The zine was also successful and had even released a cassette compilation called "A Cut Above The Rest" featuring tracks by six Northern Irish bands. The rest of Helden's musical content is very diverse and it's clear from the playlist on the back page that the Maxwells and their friends had wide-ranging tastes. The most interesting articles feature the enfant terribles of mid-1980s indie rock, The Jesus And Mary Chain (who make it clear that they are not the new Sex Pistols) and original punks Siouxsie And The Banshees, whose post-punk musical adventures had already cemented their legacy as an incredibly influential band, while Siouxsie herself had become a female style icon that generations of edgy teenagers would want to look like. According to William Maxwell, the setlist of the Banshees' recent gig in Belfast included their 1981 single "Spellbound", which was given a new lease of life four decades after its original release by being played over the closing credits of season 4 of "Stranger Things". Madness (who had come a long way from their original 2-Tone roots by this time), The Long Ryders (described as "the frontier men of American rock") and Lloyd Cole are also featured. There's an excellent four page Van Morrison retrospective and a tribute to Phil Lynott, who had recently died. Several pages of reviews include a brief dismissal of "Cut The Crap" - the execrable last album by The Clash, which brought the band's career to an embarrassing end. Fanzines reviewed include Rouska, Ooz, Rumble, What A Nice Way To Turn Seventeen and Another Empire. The authors refer to Helden as a magazine rather than a fanzine throughout. My copy came with a little note from Maurice. Click on the title above to see scans of all the zine's pages.... my box of 1980s fanzines flickr
