So you mentioned Nats inflation so I have a question: how much control over a country's Nationals does the ISU have? Cause I get the impression it's "none" but I also see people complain about the ISU even when it comes to Nats (but people can be... people)

I don't think the ISU has control over the scores at Nationals.

But there are some judges at Nationals who judge internationally too, so I think at least in this regard the ISU does have some influence. I don't think though that they could or would interfere with the scores given nationally as they don't count for highest scores and personal bests.

In the end the inflation is also ISU's fault bc of the unclear rules and room for interpretation. If rules would be clear, inflation would hardly be possible as much and scores in general would stand a comparison better.

allegedly the ladies FS sold out. There's only so much you can pin on the location and the weather. Like setting aside the price too! If I had the opportunity to watch CanNats in person in perfect weather for FREE I wouldn't bother. US Nats is actually worth watching on stream and in person. Imagine a national championships of a major federation that does not infect any and all onlookers with crippling depression!!

You are so correct, the state of Canadian skating, is, for the most part, completely abysmal, especially the singles. It's tragic. Our ice dance is mired in scandal, we have a hag team that should have retired years ago, and our excellent third place team is sadly injured. Pairs is Deanna and Max, a giant gulf, and then some very messy/unseasoned teams. I can't even talk about singles.

The top 6 women at US Nats outscored all the skaters at Canadian Nationals -- none of whom met the minimum TES. Just...what the hell? Le sigh.

I'm not joking when I say I want Meagan Duhamel to perform a coup and put herself in charge of Skate Canada, she would have us ready by the Olympics and fucking thriving in 3-4 years.

Now that Chock/Bates know they are Olympic gold medalists, and it's speculated Ciceron/Papapdakis will want to defend their Olympic gold status, do you think Chock/Bates will remain motivated to compete for the next Olympics and try to match VM and Grishuk/Platov's records?

Meagan Duhamel said of course she valued her team gold, but the individual bronze meant much more to her. i think VM and other skaters who have both would say the same. so C/B might be motivated to go for the individual medal to cap their career

but there's a lot yet to happen this year - trying to defend at Worlds, their wedding in June, maybe actually receiving their team gold at some point - any of it can change how complete they feel. i don't think any record is enough to motivate 2 more years of driving themselves at this level if they don't have the fuel left in the tank. Evan would have his 37th birthday at the Milano-Cortina Olympics- he was 20 at his first Olympics. that's a long time

they've been announced for SOI Japan, which is shortly after Worlds. there's no SOI USA this year. my guess is they have a sense of a plan but that nothing's set in stone yet, and they'll let the dust settle after Worlds then regroup. i'm tossed up whether they'll say anything before mid to late summer about next season, but i think it's more likely they'll be like "one step at a time" rather than committing publicly to Milano any time soon

What’s Meagan Duhamel’s history with Skate Canada? Why don’t they like her or want her involved in anything?

During the Olympic year, when it was clear Skate Canada was backing Eric and Vanessa to go to the Olympics, and Trennt and Evelyn were having a rough year, Meagan was told not to bring up Trennt and Evelyn and the Olympics on the stream. Subsequently, Trennt and Evelyn had an excellent free skate (while Vanessa and Eric pulled out and didn't perform in the free skate) she said on air that their program deserved to be seen at the Olympics, going against the wishes of the federation.

Eric Radford and Vanessa James are teaming up for team Canada. And i have some thoughts.

Firstly, they are both abuse apologists. Eric for working with John Coughlin after his abuse allegations came out. Vanessa for continuing to work with and support Morgan Cipres after his abuse and grooming of children was made public. So I will not be supporting either of them.

Secondly, it has been reported that Meagan Duhamel (who still performed with Radford until the pandemic) was not informed of the situation until the rumours started to become public. As a result, Meagan will stand to lose a lot of income from various skating shows and events who will unlikely hire her as a singles skater. The whole situation has really left her in the lurch and regardless of your personal opinion towards Meagan, this is a terrible way to treat someone.

Lastly i want to quickly point out my issue with the Skate Canada federation supporting this new pair. It is a further continuation of their habit of relying on veteran skaters to bring home international medals whilst not investing in the next generation. This is what led to the absence of international Canadian dominance following the many post-2018 retirements that affected every discipline.
