#Medda adopts

modern morris and oscar rely on food banks to eat after leaving medda’s, especially after leaving care entirely. medda sees them one day, through the window as she’s walking past a local church and glances at the open food bank.

she sees oscar hunched with his hood up, looking exhausted and ragged, digging through the food bank’s bare shelves to try and find something, anything, that morris will actually eat. morris is with him, always with him, looking close to tears and growing visibly more upset as oscar turns to him and holds out something like he’s done so countless times now. medda can’t hear them, but can tell oscar is trying to bargain with morris to eat it. it doesn’t work. morris shakes his head and wraps his arms tighter around himself and backs away. oscar grits his jaw and tosses the can back onto the shelf, dragging his hand down his face. they leave largely empty-handed.

medda starts donating to the food banks, as many as she can get to nearby. all sorts of stuff, especially the things she knows are most appreciated by those who use them - there was a time she used them herself - but she’s sure to donate morris’ safe foods, nutritious stuff for both of them, oscar’s favourites, to that particular church. the next time she sees them, they’re leaving with a full bag. they both look at least marginally healthier.

Oscar leads Morris into the church- the fourth or fifth time that month- looking for food for the rest of the month. He opens the door, expecting the same half-assed spread as usual.

When he's greeted with shelves more full than he'd ever seen before, he's taken aback. He grabs hold of Morris' sleeve, handing him a basket as they pass by the stack of them. He tosses everything that he knows Morris will eat, offers other things he's unsure of, most of which get denied.

Oscar doesn't miss he way Morris lights up when he sees his favorite brand of macaroni and cheese, the way his free hand flaps, and he puts the few boxes in their basket, and moves along the shelves. "Mo, you see anythin' else you want, you tell me, okay? Or, hell, jus' throw it in the basket."

Morris nods, eyes roaming the shelves now, seeing another one of his favorite brands. A few cans of soup in the brand Medda kept at her house. He reaches out, putting all the cans into the basket, bouncing on his toes as he grows more excited with each spotted favorite.

Oscar throws his own food into the basket, and they continue deeper into the food bank. "Mo, you might actually get to fight this season- you- you gonna get to fight!"

Oscar watched as Morris moved toward the kitchen, clacking and shaking and stimming, but otherwise silent.

He stood slowly, moving to the doorway, watching Medda interact with him. The sight makes his throat close, struggling for breath as she took his face in her hands-an action he would normally never let an adult do-and brushed her thumbs along his cheeks.

Morris's mouth moved wordlessly around his thumb, and he was gesturing wildly with his other hand, speaking a language Oscar had yet to learn.

Medda nodded like she understood, speaking to him, voice too low for Oscar to hear. His scowl deepened, fists clenching at his sides as Medda turned to the pantry. She dug through for a moment, pulling out a small pack of cookies.

Morris was following her like a puppy, watching her every move with wide, curious eyes.

She moved from the pantry to the cupboard, pulling Morris's cup and lid out, closing it only to pull open the drawer at her hip. She pulled out his straw- a pink crazy straw with 'Moo' written in the swirls and spins.

Oscar watched as his hands flapped up by his ears, excited that Medda was just... understanding him.

Morris pushed between Medda and the refrigerator door, pointing over and over and over at something inside.

The amused laughter that escaped her made Oscar's chest tighten that much more. She pulled a jug from the shelf before closing it.

Oscar didn't stick around to see what it was. He ran to their room, digging for clothes. He pulled some on, and made his way to the door.

He stepped into his shoes and pulled it open, halfway outside when he heard Medda clear her throat behind him.

"And, where are you going, Oscar?" she asked, voice even and gentle and calm in all the worst ways.

" 'M goin' for a walk," he grumbled, looking out across the street.

He could almost hear Medda considering her words, weighing them in her mind.

"Be back before the streetlights come on."

The words scraped down his spine, and he scowled. He knew better than to directly disobey an adult. It always ended badly.

He made to step outside again, but was stopped once more. This time by a tiny hand on his arm.

Oscar finally turned, eyes finding Morris, who looked between the door and Oscar.

"What?" it came out harsher than he'd meant, a swell cresting over unmoving rocks.

Morris flinched back like he'd been struck, and he silently pointed to the open door.

"No. You ain't comin' with me. You gonna stay here an' eat your cookies," he told him, heart aching at the way Morris's lip quivered and his cheeks puffed out.

"Mo, you was just fine a second ago, followin' Medda 'round the kitchen to get your stuff," Oscar could feel the swells growing, emotions coursing through him in wave after wave, trying desperately trying to hold them back.

Morris's brows scrunched together, and he grabbed tightly to Oscar's shirt.

Morris, who wanted nothing more than a family. Morris, who wanted nothing more than a parental figure that was more comfort than pain. Morris, who always wanted a mom.

He didn't need Oscar.

Oscar wrenched away from him, scowl set in the stone lines on his face.

"Be back later," he grumbled, closing the door behind him.

Sometimes talking can be impossible for Mo. He either stutters and stumbles for ages or he just has a non-verbal episode. And Os just has the hardest time understanding what he wants. There are times where Morris lays there, silent, sometimes crying, sometimes just laying there and Oscar just can’t for the life of him figure out what his brother wants. He feels so helpless sitting there wishing he knew how to help. And then they meet Medda who has a knack for understanding what kids want. Suddenly it’s out of his hands. “I don’t know what he wants”

“he’s just hungry, baby. Let me make you two a snack”

But instead of feeling better Oscar feels worse. How can this strange woman who’s never met Morris know what he wants? Why wa sit so easy for her and so hard for him? - 🤠anon

oscar gets frustrated with morris about it, and half of the time can’t find it in himself to feel bad. he snaps at him, shakes him, sometimes even shouts and all morris does is shrink back, curl in on himself with tears in his eyes, and oscar just can’t get why he won’t tell him like he usually does. he hates feeling useless, like he’s doing something wrong, like he’s failing and morris can’t even say that it’s not his fault because the words won’t come and he’s so frustrated and scared about it too. the more oscar presses the worse it gets

oscar hates medda for it. when morris relaxes and nods and even manages to smile a little sometimes as she guess what he needs, when he starts to slink over to her instead of him more and more in search of food, or another blanket. she’s taking his little brother away from him bit by bit. they don’t know this woman at all, they were just dumped with her it’s not fair that he can’t understand when she can. he’s morris’ brother, he’s supposed to understand and the way medda explains so gently, like it’s simple and something he should already know, just makes oscar angry because it’s just another thing he’s failing at

This is the overall mood bored

Jack and davey have just moved into a new house trying to start a life together after getting married. Albert and Race are two ghosts who haunt the building, both have questionable deaths. When Jack gets into an accident involving falling dishes he starts to see the two. This starts a family

Jack Kelly: the psychic who can see ghosts

Jack Jacobs Kelly has just moved to a new house trying to start a new life with his new husband David Jacobs. One night he gets into a small accident with some falling dishes when he come to he can see the ghosts haunting his new house. Jack is an artist who mainly paints landscapes but occasionally paints his husband. He’s cocky and funny he was adopted my Medda Larkin and has a younger brother by three years called Charlie.

David Jacobs Kelly is just newly wed to Jack Jacobs Kelly and the two move into a new house for a new life. One night Davey finds his husband bleeding from the head so he stitches him up and helps him to bed. When he comes back from work his husband is now claiming he can see ghosts. David is a highly intelligent nurse who is smart, kind, and willing to give help to anyone who needs it. Davey also loves to read and teach other people.

Albert DaSilva a ghost from the 1940’s he never saw the point of love and mainly kept to his close group of friends. Albert is a catholic who even after his death still carries his rosary and a tiny bible that he had died with. Albert is sarcastic and snappy. Albert is incredibly protective of racer despite being decades younger.

Racer or antionio is a ghost from 1899 racer’s parents were Italian immigrants who sent him to New York himself for a better life race fell in love once which had dire consequences so he vowed to never talk about it. Race had quite a few friends and was beloved by his father Bryan Denton. Race was a heavy smoker and has a cigar on him and two old pictures one of him and his father and another of a short boy a couple years older. Race was a newsie and a real good one at that selling many papers a day although he was a smart mouth leading to many fights but the newsies from New York loved him. Race is sarcastic funny and kind in his own way but has a sadness to him nobody can decipher.

so I just finished watching Newsies 1992 for the fourth time, and noted down a bunch of things I noticed or thoughts I had. I didn't do this the third time I watched bc that one was with my brother and I wanted to focus on the movie and talking and joking with him lol.

anyway, I noted down a lot of things, so prepare for a long post. (these are in order of when I thought of them, and I'm typing them from my notes app so enjoy my train of thought/how my brain thinks)

1- shoutout to Mr Kloppman for taking care of the boys

2- what's the story behind the lady that comes in singing about her son in "Carrying the Banner"? she fucking slays, but I'm very confused about it

3- they're literally just a bunch of teenage boys who've been dealt an awful hand in life but try their best to keep everyone's morale up and stay positive (me realizing how sad the reality of the newsboys is)

4- all the older newsies taking care of and helping the little ones I love them so bad

5- you can tell how close the newsies are with each other I love it. family for real

6- why does Les carry a wooden sword almost the whole movie?

7- "this is my brother David. he's older" "oh, no kiddin'"

8- love love love how all the newsies just adopt David and Les into the group immediately

9- Pulitzer needs a magnifying glass to read the big-ass headline lmao

10- Seitz lowkey seems to kinda be on the newsies' side

11- why does the crowd boo when the old guy is holding up the "round 58" sign? (during the scene where there's a boxing match going on)

25- Spot Conlon hears Davey say one sentence and is like 'yeah this guy never shuts up once you get him going, i can tell' (hence "walking mouth")

26- who is the newsie that just appears behind Jack while they're in Brooklyn talking to Spot??

28- where does Race get a harmonica from for "Seize The Day"?

29- love all the littles standing on the statue pedestal during "Seize The Day"

52- i keep accidentally mixing up Specs and Dutchy lol. probably cuz they both wear glasses (i feel so bad for this omg i'm so sorry Specs and Dutchy)

53- no yeah, security at the gate of the Refuge is awful. 6 boys snuck in at once !!

54- why did Pulitzer tell Jack to shut up and listen THREE TIMES when he wasn't even talking ???

55- Davey was just standing in the courtyard outside Pulitzer's, how did no one see him?? he wasn't even hiding, dude

56- Mush shows up to get the "Newsies Banner" papers twice - once by himself and again with Kid Blink

57- "can you read? read that" (Race making sure the kids will be able to read the paper love him for that)

58- Race and Les's little friendship moment is cute ("when the circulation bell starts ringin', will we hear it?" "nah")

59- Race's reaction to Roosevelt is funny. "Roosevelt!?" (bro is shocked)

60- Denton hanging out with Les while Davey gets his papes

61- Race cheering when Jack kisses Sarah. "Jackie boy!"

whew oh dear lord I am so so so sorry for this being so fucking long. tw modern race and smoking under the break

he originally saved all his lucky cigarettes in one pack, and just buy a whole nother pack when he had the money for it. he would have those saved for when he didn't have the money to buy a whole new pack, he'd still have something to smoke without having to steal or bum one.

being in medda's house and regularly having the money to buy cigarettes, but never losing that habit of saving the luckys. so race having four or five full packs of cigarettes just in his nightstand, and those are the ones he gives out when someone bums one off of him, as a good luck charm.

he won't bum out his freshest pack (the one he keeps on him), and the others get kinda pissy with him because of it, but once theyre able to get back, race'll give out the ones from his nightstand like candy

Jack Kelly has dyslexia. This is something he never knew until he was fourteen.

For most of his life, he never really knew how to write as well as the other kids. As a result, he got made fun of a lot.

The other kids called him stupid and dumb. His teachers said that he was smart, but needed to apply himself.

By middle school it gets worse because now his teachers are doing the bullying. One of them even said that he would never amount to anything.

Luckily, Jack’s adoptive mother Medda, younger brother Crutchy, and older brother Racetrack are kinder and more understanding.

They all know that while he can’t read as well as the other kids, he is just as intelligent as them.

By his freshman year of high school, Jack is diagnosed with dyslexia. He feels as though a huge burden has been lifted from his shoulders. All those years of him believing that he’s stupid, he now sees that it wasn’t true.

Kloppman offers to help Jack with his English homework when he’s free, and Racetrack, being the smart guy, also helps him.

Starting with Spralbert:

The have four kids. They planned three. But Rocket turned out to have a twin sister.

The kids call Albert Dad. They call Spot Pop, and Race Pa.

Brooklyn is the oldest. She’s one year older than Conny and almost five years older than the twins. Conny is one year younger than Brooklyn and four years older than the twin. Roxy and Rocket are almost five years younger than Brooklyn and four years younger than Conny.

Brooklyn doesn’t have a nickname per se but her dads call her their little dancer sometimes. Conny is sometimes called Con but usually they just say Conny. Her dads sometimes call her honey, or hun. Roxy doesn't have one either, her dads just call her princess but Rocket is often called Rocky as a joke, so all the children have o’s and y’s in their names. His dad’s sometimes call him their star, or rockstar

Brooklyn does ballet until she’s 12 and then gives it up for hip hop.

Conny loves animals, she hates school and she’s barely inside unless she has to. She especially loves birds, specifically ducks and chickens. At eight, up until she’s twelve, she has a circus phase.

Rocket has a new hobby every other week.

Roxy loves acting, dressing up or doing makeup.

Javey has two daughters.

Luna and Fey.

Luna three years older than Fey. She’s two years younger than Conny, three years younger than Brooklyn and two years older than Roxy and Rocket.

Davey is Dad and Jack is Daddy.

Luna is super close with Rocket. They do like practically everything together.

Fey is into Astronomy and shit. She’s also in school plays with Roxy.

Crayon only has a son called Freddy. He’s Connys age and he’s super artistic. He was also 100% a boyscout and u CANNOT change my mind.

Alberts mom died when he was 17, which left him alone with his stepdad, because Oscar and Morris already moved out at that point. His stepdad was pretty abusive, and alcoholic after Alberts mom, Lady, passed.

Races real name is Ed. He was kicked out by his parents for being gay at 14 and then adopted by Medda. His adoptive brothers are Jack and Crutchie (real name Charlie). All three of them were born in the same year but Jack is the oldest by a few months, and Race is the youngest, making Crutchie the middle child.

Spot lost his family in a housefire when he was pretty young. Only he and his older sister Niamh survived. Spot’s real name is Carlo.

Niahm is 7 years older than Spot.

Spot often blames himself for being one of the only ones that survived the fire. He used to burn himself as a teenager, to feel the same pain that his family must have felt in their final moments.

After Alberts mom died he used to hurt himself too.

Same for Race after getting kicked out by his parents.

Spot is Hispanic, Latino. He’s from Cuba originally but he and Niamh moved to New York after the fire. he has short dark hair. He’s very short but makes up for it with muscles. A lot of muscles. So many muscles.

Albert is white and from Brazil originally. He used to live there until he was three. Then his mom moved to Canada and his dad to alabama, which is where he switched every two weeks until he was seven. Then he and his mom moved to New York and moved in with Alberts stepdad. He has ginger, fluffy hair and an athletic stature.

Race is an Italian immigrant. He lived in New York for as long as he can remember. He’s white and has has blonde curly hair and is really, really tall.

Brooklyn is black, and she’s adopted. Her parents are unknown and also where she comes from. But she was extremely shy when she first got adopted and flinched at sudden movements, leaving little to imagination.

Conny a blonde, white canadian girl and is also adopted since she was two. They started to look for someone with similar genetics as Race.

Roxy and Rocket are Alberts biological children. But also adopted by Race and Spot. Roxy is brown and has black long hair, looking a bit more like her birth mother, while Rocket has short, reddish /blonde hair

Okay I'll start off with childhood

Race's parents died in a car crash when he was 5, Leaving him in foster care for 3 years until Medda adopted him at 8. She had previously adopted Jack.

Spot, on the other hand, was in foster care until he was 18. He absolutely hated being moved around constantly and never knowing what sort of family he would be put into.

Race and Spot met around 5th grade, Spot hadn't quite lost in faith in humanity and hearing Race's story gave him some hope. They bonded over their similar experiences and stayed not quite friends but not not friends until they started dating at 18 :)
