Atlantis Expedition: Science Division Departments - Applied Sciences Department
The last of the science departments! Previously were the medical, life, and field sciences.
Below are the original notes, with one (1) revision:
Applied Sciences Department
> Head: Rodney McKay Radek Zelenka > Contains: Electrical/technical engineering, nuclear physics, civil engineering, astrophysics, laser/optical, chemical engineering > Function: Study, synthesis, and adaptations of Ancient technology > Examples of function: ZPM analysis with intent to duplicate, experimental duplications of Ancient technology materials, study of gate physics and construction with intent to duplicate, study and experimental duplication of other Ancient technologies (i.e. hyperdrives, cloaks, weapons, etc) > Personnel quantity: 1 (Head) + 3 (electreng) + 6 (techeng/gate techs) + 1 (nucphys) + 1 (astrophy) + 1 (LZ/opt) +  3 (chemeng) = 16 > A/N: The people Rodney are yelling at most often, because mistakes mean kablooey. Also a lot of the people running around in an emergency. 1 nuclear physicist because Rodney pulls a lot of intellectual weight, and same with the astrophysicist and laser/optical person (mostly they're there as on-paper hires and back-ups/assistants for him for his own research).
Revision because I do believe Radek would be in charge of a department, and this neatly explains why Radek is so often Rodney's functional second-in-command as well as the way they interact on a professional level.
Excepting the physicists (nuclear and astro), everyone here is an engineer or engineering-adjacent (see: gate techs).
Here's the breakdown, commentary included:
> Electrical Engineering  » 3x of these  » Specialties   ⇛ Computer engineering    ⟹ Hardware, software, computer architecture, computer design, robotics    ⟹ Makes the databases, and also things like MALPs   ⇛ Microelectronics    ⟹ Study of and fabrication of microelectronics     ⭆ The bits and bobs that make electronics    ⟹ Semiconductor-adjacent work   ⇛ Electronic engineering    ⟹ Designs communication and instrumentation devices     ⭆ Database architecture, signals between devices, etc  » Outline of electrical engineering > Technical Engineering/Gate Technicians  » SGC imports  » 6x of these   ⇛ Duties    ⟹ Drafting of technical drawings    ⟹ Gate address memorization and log maintenance    ⟹ Mission log maintenance    ⟹ Gate repair and maintenance > Nuclear Physics  » Studies nuclear material and electron movements   ⇛ AKA power source analytics  » Also provides radiocarbon dating support to the Field Sciences team > Civil Engineering  » Job of idiot-proofing  » Studies the built world (infrastructure)  » Useful for planning things like sewage systems, bridges, etc  » Assists Field Sciences department with infrastructure design based on their feedback > Astrophysics  » Does labwork and goes ooh at the telescope(s)  » Analyzes data from telescopes and constructs planetary profiles and other celestial data  » Assists with compilation of data from Field Sciences department > Laser/Optical  » Creates, maintains, and compiles information from laser-based optical devices  » Works with electrical engineers for development of new tools  » Assists astrophysicist(s) with developing specialized tools for planetary analysis > Chemical Engineering  » 3x of these  » Slightly different role than the biochemical engineers in the Life Sciences department  » Specialties   ⇛ Materials science/Polymer engineering    ⟹ Research and creation of new materials     ⭆ Plastic-type and other malleable materials that aren't petrochemical-based   ⇛ Semiconductors    ⟹ Makes the semiconductors the other engineers are using    ⟹ Also researches new ways to make semiconductors from new materials   ⇛ Chemical process modeling    ⟹ Computer modelling of new production processes    ⟹ Primarily non-biologic chemicals and chemically-based outputs    ⟹ Assists civil engineer in production processes for infrastructure modelling    ⟹ The "fuck around and find out" person  » Outline of chemical engineering
These are the people that, except for the head of the expedition, are the ones that make an expedition possible. Studying Ancient technology? This is the department. Setting up all the technology that everyone will be using, down to having a copy of Solitaire saved and inventorying down to the amount of solder? Once again, these people. Outside of the military factor - of which I presume there will naturally be quite a bit of overlap - the Applied Sciences are the ones to, well, apply the science.
Electric engineers are... I suppose a popular preconception of them is programming, if not a mental image of soldering pieces onto a motherboard. Neither is entirely incorrect, but it misses the broader scope of their training, and that is the design and construction of computers and their accompanying software. Whether a computer be a database system (think a cloud, or a company's digital storage) or a microprocessor that allows a robot to be a robot, these are also the people that generally end up in charge of the security of all electronics (see: hacking). Rodney McKay, as the CSO, will likely be one of two people (the other being the head of the expedition) holding the ultimate keys to this, but they'll likely be some sort of system administrators to handle the day-to-day work.
Gate technicians, while trained on the operation and maintenance of the gate and gate system - not an easy task in the slightest, and requiring a degree of fluency in Ancient and Goa'uld! - also handle a lot of the miscellaneous work that this department needs. Another shout-out to @spurious for prompting this idea, because there does need to be a group of people who do technical drafting, and the logic follows that they would also maintain records related to the usage of the gate, such as gate addresses (places visited, no-go addresses), mission details (liaison with the Field Sciences on managing pre- and post-mission information on planets and inter-planetary relations), and in general keeping track of what's going on regarding the gate.
Nuclear physics is here as an applied, rather than theoretical, position, keeping in line with the goals of this department. Primarily they would do power source analytics, being well-equipped to study radiation and electron movements, and parse such information for review. They would be doing a lot of labwork, and running lots of simulations on things like decay rates and energy throughputs of radioactive materials and different types of nuclear-type energy productions/storage containers (for the purposes of this headcanon, ZPMs are being lumped into this category despite being a solid state energy that functionally is not radioactive - there is a reason why Rodney's considered a ZPM expert).
Civil engineering is there, quite literally, to idiot-proof. This is useful around a crowd of engineers, and they also act as a useful translator for military parlance if a completely civilian engineer or scientist is in this or another science department. If you need a toilet, or a bridge, or putting up electric lines, this is your go-to person.
An astrophysicist on hand to study things like star charts (figuring out where you are in the new galaxy, especially in relation to the old one) and where other stargate would actually, literally be based on the constellations used as chevrons. They would be making the new maps, as well as assisting the Field Sciences department in the analysis of planetary physics from a distanced perspective. Their work will also put them in close relation to the gate technicians because of the amount of overlap in duties.
Laser and optical engineering is going to be immensely useful for this expedition, because not only will they help with making sure the electronics work, they can help with maintaining that, as well the operation and analysis of light-based scientific equipment. Think spectrometers, electron microscopes, and the like. A lot of Ancient and Goa'uld-adapted technology is likely to be laser- and optical-based, so this type of engineer will be useful for reverse-engineering and general dummy-testing.
Chemical engineers will, indeed, fuck around and find out. They're a little different than the biochemical engineers in the Life Sciences department, in that they wouldn't be dealing with the formulation of biologics and the tools to create such materials. Rather, they would be figuring out ways to make the things that everything is made out of - primarily plastic alternatives and other petrochemical alternatives. This would include everything from computer housings to wire insulation to, probably, the wires themselves (think fiber optics). If you're looking for an archetypal mad scientist, here's where you'll find them.
Given how closely aligned this department is with not only the IOA's goals for the expedition, but also the SGC's, it would be safe to assume that the members of this department will have some sway over the other departments. This would, of course, fluctuate based on the need of the given subject, but everyone in this department would quickly adapt to becoming the main people to assist the CSO in figuring out, repairing, and maintaining Atlantis as a whole.
Total Applied Sciences Department Personnel
Head of department: 1
Engineers: 7
Gate technicians: 6
Physicists: 2
Total total: 16
I'll be going over canonical personnel like Radek Zelenka and Miko Kusanagi in their own posts, but for now this is a general accounting of the expedition’s applied sciences department.

Exploring LLM Agents: The Future of Autonomous AI Systems
Tumblr media
LLM Agents are AI systems integrating large language models (such as GPT, BERT, or similar architectures) with autonomous functionalities. Unlike traditional chatbots or simple AI assistants, LLM agents can understand complex language inputs, reason through those inputs, and execute tasks autonomously based on that understanding.
An LLM is a deep learning model trained on vast amounts of text data to understand and generate human language. It processes natural language inputs to generate appropriate outputs, often engaging in conversations, generating text, or making decisions. When these models are integrated with autonomous functionalities (the "agent" aspect), they can carry out actions like sending emails, generating reports, analyzing data, and even performing automated tasks on behalf of a user.
Key Features of LLM Agents
Natural Language Understanding and Generation
LLM agents excel at processing human language, making them ideal for applications where natural communication is key. Their ability to comprehend context, understand nuances in language, and generate coherent and contextually appropriate responses makes them highly effective in a wide range of tasks, from customer service to content creation.
Autonomy and Decision-Making
Unlike standard LLMs that typically require human prompts to generate responses, LLM agents can autonomously make decisions based on predefined goals or learning from their environment. For instance, an LLM agent could automate scheduling meetings by analyzing calendars and email interactions without constant human intervention.
Task Execution and Integration with Tools
LLM agents can interact with external systems and APIs, allowing them to execute complex tasks. They may integrate with databases and tools like GitHub for software development or control other devices like smart home systems. Their flexibility allows them to be deployed in various industries, from healthcare to finance to entertainment.
Scalability and Adaptability
Since LLMs can be fine-tuned for specific tasks or industries, LLM agents can be adapted to solve a broad range of problems across sectors. For example, an LLM agent tailored for customer support could be fine-tuned to understand product-specific inquiries or frequently asked questions in real time.
Real-World Applications of LLM Agents
Customer Support and Virtual Assistants
LLM agents are revolutionizing the customer service industry. AI-powered virtual assistants can handle routine inquiries, resolve customer complaints, and even escalate complex issues to human representatives when necessary. These systems improve response times and overall customer satisfaction, all while reducing the need for human agents.
Business Process Automation
In many organizations, LLM agents automate routine administrative tasks. For example, an LLM agent can draft emails, schedule appointments, or manage internal workflows. This allows businesses to streamline operations and allocate human resources to more critical and strategic tasks.
Healthcare and Research
LLM agents are being applied in the healthcare sector to support research, diagnostics, and patient care. They can analyze vast amounts of medical literature, assist in diagnostic decision-making, and even manage patient records. With the ability to synthesize information from multiple sources, they help healthcare professionals make data-driven decisions faster.
Data Analysis and Reporting
In data-heavy industries, LLM agents assist in analyzing large datasets, identifying trends, and generating reports. For example, an LLM agent can be used in the financial sector to analyze market data, predict trends, and generate automated reports for investors or clients. Their ability to process unstructured data (like text and numbers) adds tremendous value in areas like market research and risk management.
Software Development
Developers can leverage LLM agents for code generation, bug fixing, and even project management tasks. By integrating with version control systems like GitHub, LLM agents can assist with writing code snippets, finding bugs in existing code, and providing recommendations for improvements while learning from previous interactions and continuously improving.
The Role of Certifications and Skills in Working with LLM Agents
While LLM agents are powerful tools, developing and deploying them requires a strong foundation in various technical areas. Professionals looking to work with LLM agents should pursue relevant certifications and training, including those in Cyber Security, Python, Machine Learning, and AI. Below are key areas to consider:
Cyber Security Certifications
Since LLM agents interact with sensitive data and systems, ensuring their security is paramount. Cyber Security Certifications provide the skills necessary to safeguard AI systems against attacks, prevent data breaches, and ensure compliance with privacy regulations. With AI systems becoming more autonomous, securing them against malicious actors is crucial.
Python Certification
Python is one of the most commonly used programming languages for developing AI systems, including LLM agents. Python Certification can provide proficiency in coding, data manipulation, and machine learning techniques. Python's flexibility and a large ecosystem of libraries make it a perfect fit for building and deploying LLM agents.
AI Course
An AI Course equips learners with the foundational and advanced concepts of artificial intelligence, including training machine learning models, natural language processing, and deploying AI systems. Understanding AI principles is crucial when working with advanced agents like LLM agents that rely heavily on AI techniques.
Machine Learning Certification
Since LLM agents are based on machine learning techniques intense learning, a Machine Learning Certification can help professionals understand how to build, train, and fine-tune models for autonomous tasks. These certifications cover key aspects of supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning, which are essential when designing intelligent agents.
Information Security Certificate
Given that LLM agents handle significant amounts of sensitive data, professionals with an Information Security Certificate will understand how to ensure the privacy, confidentiality, and integrity of the data being processed by these agents. Security training is essential when developing AI systems that are integrated with external tools and systems.
Conclusion
LLM agents are poised to revolutionize industries by automating complex tasks, improving efficiency, and enhancing decision-making. As AI continues to evolve, LLM agents will play a pivotal role in fields ranging from healthcare and finance to software development and customer service. For professionals interested in working with these advanced AI systems, pursuing certifications in cybersecurity, Python, Machine Learning, and AI is essential to gaining the expertise needed to develop, secure, and deploy these autonomous agents effectively. As LLM agents become more integrated into various sectors, they will continue to shape the future of AI, offering exciting opportunities for those skilled in the field.

For these reasons, building a minimum viable product the first version of your software solution with basic features. This is to test the viability of the software solution before proceeding with the processes. In the end, an MVP will help you cut down on the development timeline and build a product that will penetrate the market easily.
Testing
Finally, once you finish the process of developing field service management software, you will need to test it to ensure all the functionalities are effective and that the entire system doesn’t have issues before releasing it to the users.
Field service management software challenges and solutions
While field service management software offers a lot of benefits to the enterprise industry, it has a set of challenges that can’t go unnoticed. These challenges include the following:
Scheduling conflicts
Such conflicts occur when two different events intertwine in the same slot. When such conflicts occur regularly, then your field service business could face some threats, hence the need to find lasting solutions.
The common scheduling conflicts in field service management are as follows:
Unavailable time slot – This happens when a person booked to accomplish a specific slot is engaged somewhere else, thus causing a conflict.
Overlapping events – When two events are processed on the same timeline.
Double-booking – when two employees are booked for the same task.
Solution: create a reliable scheduling model available on-premises and off-premises to enable all the teams to stay updated with the scheduled events and avoid all these conflicts. What’s more, you can renovate your scheduling feature to give you real-time alerts whenever a conflict occurs and have backup solutions depending on the nature of the conflict.
Effective communication measures
In most instances, messages and phone calls are reliable means of communication between the field reps and the field service managers.
However, network issues may arise and halt the communication processes. Again, if the nature of the fieldwork requires more details, it means spending more time communicating with the people in the office and getting them informed of the progress, thus wasting more time and resources.
Ideally, real-time communication is not always effective on personal devices. This leads to a lack of accountability issues among the teams. Again, not all team members use their devices in the same manner.
Solution: to streamline communication matters, implement the use of customized software that helps field companies overcome communication challenges in all aspects.
The software solution can help in sending, receiving, and sharing real-time information between the teams, thus solving the communication mystery.
Overhead Cost
Overhead costs can make all the work and resources you’ve invested in making the system meaningless, hence the need to minimize overhead costs.
The big problem comes in when you cannot overview or evade some overhead costs. For instance, you must hire professionals like CTO in the tech space to ensure the quality is top-notch. Of course, you can’t overview this requirement, and it will increase the overhead cost. So, how do you go about this?
Solution: Focus on increasing the ROI. You can achieve this by cutting down on new hiring and maximizing the use of resources.
Again, you can choose to execute all the processes online as a measure of increasing your ROI. Of course, you will need to integrate digital tools to make this process effective. Yes, the overhead cost will be high, but the ROI will maximize profits and enhance customer satisfaction, hence making the whole concept viable.
Travel Expenses
Of course, you want to maximize productivity by sending your field workers to specific areas. This calls for extra travel expenses. Now, here is the dilemma: you need the work done but spend less on traveling expenses.
Solution: Cutting down on travel expenses while maximizing productivity is quite simple. You only need to manage and control route planning.
Start by knowing the exact location your technician needs to go, then guide the technician to the best route that will cut down such costs.
Of course, you will use technology integration that will guide you on the best, safest, and cheapest routes based on different metrics.
Again, you can advise your technicians to use optimized routes to save costs and time, track their activities in the field, and minimize the number of visits to the sites.
Which industries can use field service management software?
In many cases, field service management software offers reliable solutions to the following industries:

Atlantis Expedition: Science Division Departments - Field Sciences Department
With the original post outlining the departments getting further away in the rearview mirror, as I've already finished the medical and life sciences departments, on to the field sciences.
Below are the original notes, with - tada! - no revisions:
Field Sciences Department
> Head: OC > Contains: Linguistics, historical geography, cartography, ethnography, sociology, oceanography, hydrology, atmospheric physics, planetary physics > Function: Research pool for gate teams and any assigned missions > Examples of function: Preservation of refugee cultures, scouting for trade planets, analysis of back-up sites for establishment > Personnel quantity: 1 (Head) + 3 (linguistics) + 1 (histgeo) + 1 (cart) + 1 (ethno) + 1 (socio) + 1 (oceano) + 1 (hydro) + 1 (atmophys) + 1 (planphys) = 12 > A/N: SGC duplicate all shoved into one department, mostly ignored in-house but their brains are picked for background dossiers when it comes to mission planning. Linguists trained in xenolinguistics, from the SGC, can cover the various anthro fields if necessary, also various training in structural linguistics. Main scientist pulls for gate team assignments, if something critical isn't needed (i.e. Ancient technology).
There's about three loose groupings here: the linguists, the anthropologists, and the non-anthropological scientists. The last of these are more pure science, so while they may do technical work, they're not engineering based, and thus well-suited to this department for a few reasons.
Here's the breakdown, commentary included:

Insert Daniel's caterwauling about not being allowed to go with the expedition. I imagine he was very grumpy in picking out some of his staff to go instead of him, but they are, at least, quite likely to be well-trained.
At any rate, these are the people that contribute to pre-mission dossiers, analyze data brought back from missions, and are the general group of people that might be pulled into gate missions themselves based on their expertise in various facets of culture and cultural analysis.
Given the fact that the Atlantis expedition was launched years after the SGC was formed, and also years after they ironed out the kinks in developing gate teams and mission parameters, the expedition has a bit of a leg up in terms of pre-populating their experts. Having Elizabeth Weir as the head of the expedition helps, as she had at one point been the head of the SGC, so had the opportunity to learn how the SGC runs, and why it makes the decisions it does.
Because of this, the Field Sciences department is going to be heavy on the SGC imports, and not just given a quick training on Goa'uld-adapted technology like the Medical and Life Sciences department would be.
The linguists are going to be doing a lot of the heavy lifting, and likely already know Ancient from the Milky Way extant samples the SGC was able to get from their own missions. (Do I think Ancient really is a Latin analogue? Nope, but narratively that's what it is.) After having been trained on Goa'uld as a lingua franca of the Milky Way, these people are going to be more specialized in being thrown feet-first into a new language group and learning it without any preexisting framework.
The anthropologists - geographer, cartographer, ethnographer, and sociologist - are going to be the ones to gather, analyze, and provide context for not only the languages the expedition and gate teams will encounter (such as dialects of Ancient and other common trading languages in the Pegasus galaxy), but also to record and articulate historical and contemporary information of the peoples the expedition meets. This is useful for not only establishing back-up installations (i.e. alpha site, beta site, etc), but also for assisting in refugee work and tracking population migrations that they'll eventually figure out is caused by Wraith cullings.
The pure sciences do what pure sciences do: collect information. While linguists may find a group of people with fifty words for different shades of green, pure scientists will track down what those words are used for (i.e. locating different types of forests). They'll work closely with the Life Sciences department, in case a botanist needs to find a particular plant, or a zoologist needs to find a particular animal, by cross-referencing geographical data and likely working in concert with the local societies that provided them with that information.
Of all departments, it's the Field Sciences department that people like Teyla and Ronon will be most likely to interact with on a regular basis, given their roles of cultural experts and cultural liaisons.
Total Field Sciences Department Personnel
Head of Department: 1
Linguists: 3
Anthropologists: 4
Pure Sciences: 4
Total total: 12
Any canonical characters that happen to fit the bill of a role in this department will have their own post, but for now this is a general accounting of the expedition's field sciences department.
