HEATWAVE: Watchable but routine 2022 thriller about a bisexual Black woman with a checkered past (Kat Graham) who lands an exciting job with an upscale commercial real estate firm and finds a sexy white girlfriend (Merritt Patterson), only to find herself in a world of trouble after discovering that her new girlfriend is actually the trophy wife of her jealous, domineering new boss (Sebastian Roché). Making the protagonist a Black woman is novel for this genre (although it has less impact on the plot than perhaps it should), and the Graham character is a resourceful heroine, but the plot isn't quite inventive enough to make up for the all-too-familiar premise, and the story can't seem to decide what note it wants to end on, leading to a less-than-satisfying resolution. The corny voiceover that bookends the film doesn't help either.

THE HOT SPOT: GIF sets floating around Tumblr might give you the mistaken impression that this 1990 thriller, directed by Dennis Hopper and starring Don Johnson, Virginia Madsen, and Jennifer Connelly, is some kind of forgotten sexy gem. In fact, it's a frustratingly lifeless neo-noir about a sleazy used car salesman (Johnson) in a small Texas town who attempts to juggle an ill-advised affair with his boss's vampish wife (Madsen), who has murder on her mind, with his pursuit of the dealership's financing manager (Connelly), a nice girl who's being blackmailed by a local ne'er-do-well (William Sadler) over her dead sister's past lesbian affair. Wants to evoke DOUBLE INDEMNITY and BODY HEAT, but it trips from plot point to plot point in disjointed, illogical fashion, failing to develop any real narrative momentum, much less suspense. Despite its murders, arson, and other assorted mayhem, it's ultimately just boring, with only the periodic scenes of Madsen or Connelly mostly naked to keep the viewer awake. Don't waste your time.

THE SQUAD: Frustratingly joyless, moderately exploitative 2023 action movie, written, produced, and directed by Rick Walker, about three ruthless, bikini-clad 20something white girls (Alea Hansinger, Meghan Carrasquillo, and Grace Evans), once rescued from foster care by a benefactor called Alpha (Jennifer Ferguson), who attempt to break into the drug scene on the Oklahoma coast in the run-up to spring break and quickly run afoul of the game's established players. The leering direction is a series of music video clichés — every scene feels like it's leading up to either a montage or a dance routine that's not forthcoming — and the clumsy script does a terrible job of establishing basic plot and character details (the girls' relationship with Alpha, the most potentially interesting part of the story, is consigned to a handful of awkwardly placed flashbacks). Of the poorly defined characters, only the girls' friend JC makes any impression, and then mostly because of the physical presence of MMA star Julia Avila (who isn't given much chance to demonstrate whether or not she can act). As demonstrated by the silly but entertaining 2018 remake of SUPERFLY (by Director X and Alex Tse), it's possible to do this kind of thing in a way that at least qualifies as dumb fun, but THE SQUAD is too mean-spirited to work even on that level, and the end titles' promise of a sequel seems more like a threat than a promise.

Past Outfits Meghan Markle Can’t Wear Anymore Now That She’s Royal

Meghan Markle has been a member of the British royal family for some time now, so we thought that it was as good a time as any to look back on her old outfits—and the looks that we’ll never see her wear again now that she’s the Duchess of Sussex. (RIP, her ripped jeans.)

Markle has worn some memorable looks since she became engaged to Prince Harry, but, aside from a messy bun here and there, they all follow the same traditional royal trend: modest necklines, stockings, nothing too flashy. But Markle’ style wasn’t always like this. When she was an actor on Suits, Markle wore tons of interesting clothes and beauty looks, from midriff-exposing dresses to gothic nail polish. And though we’ll likely never see Markle in anything similar again, it’s still fun to look back on her royal rules-breaking outfits that wouldn’t fly today.

Ripped Jeans

Denim isn’t banned in the royal household, but it’s definitely not preferred. According to the BBC, men usually wear khakis if it’s a casual dress code, while women wear trousers or day dresses—though, if it’s an extra low-key occasion, such as out walking the dog, jeans are fine. Likewise, the royals’ clothes are supposed to be neat and put together, meaning that Markle’s ripped jeans from the 2017 Invictus Games in September 2017 (before she and Harry were even engaged) wouldn’t fly today.

Dark Nail Polish

Though there’s nothing wrong with Markle’s clothes in these two outfits, you likely won’t see her wearing the entire looks again—and that’s because of her nail polish. Under Queen Elizabeth II’s rule, the nails of royal women are to be kept clean and natural-looking, meaning that Markle will likely never wear non-nude nail polishes again. For the most part, the royals stick to nail polish colors such as pale pinks and taupes, so these pics are likely the last you’ll see her with such dark nail polish on her fingers.

Any Outfit Without Pantyhose

Before she was a royal, Markle showed her bare legs more often than not. Now, it’s the opposite. It’s a well-known rule that royal women are prohibited from showing their bare legs and must wear pantyhose. Markle already broke the rule once when she didn’t wear stockings for her engagement announcement, but you likely won’t see her flaunting her legs like in the pictures below again.

Showing Her Midriff

Like sleeveless outfits and showing her shoulders (more on that later), outfits where one’s midriff is showing is almost unheard of in the royal family. Most of their clothes are modest, knee-length with their skin covered up. So the chances that Markle will get a lot of use out of her crop tops and belly-baring outfits, like the ones below, are next to none.

Bright-Colored Outfits

Aside from a recent yellow dress, Markle hasn’t worn many bright colors since becoming a royal, and there’s a reason why. Bright colors are usually reserved for Queen Elizabeth II, who is often seen in coats and dresses in vibrant hues, such as lime green and baby blue. The Queen often wears bright colors to differentiate herself from the public and stand out in a crowd. And though Markle has worn at least one bright-colored outfit since her royal inauguration, don’t expect her to ever wear something bright when she’s out with the Queen.

Clothes with Brand Names on Them

The royals are notoriously nonpartisan and are prohibited from voting. This year, at the 2018 BAFTA Awards, Kate Middleton created a stir when she wore green instead of black in support of Time’s Up. Because they are to remain nonpartisan (whether it’s politics or business), you won’t see a royal wearing name brands on their clothes. Wearing All-Black, Especially in the Daytime

Though black isn’t prohibited, it isn’t usually worn, especially in the daytime. According to Alexandra Messervy, a royal expert for InStyle, black is usually reserved for funerals, though some royals, such as Princess Diana, have been known to make it nighttime attire.

“Generally it is thought that black is not usually worn unless in mourning, although Diana Princess of Wales did occasionally wear it for evening functions, and The Duchess of Cambridge has been known to do so,” Messervy said.

So far, Markle has worn all-black once for a daytime engagement, which led to some backlash. The word is still out on if she’ll do it again. “I note that there was a bit of an outcry recently when Ms. Markle wore black for a daytime event,” Messervy said.

Sleeveless and Off-the-Shoulder

As some might remember, there was a huge bout of shoulder-shaming when Markle wore a shoulders-baring dress for the Queen’s birthday parade in June 2018. Since then, Markle has kept her shoulders covered, though she is known to wear sleeveless outfits from time to time. If she becomes more traditional, expect her to clean out her closet of both looks, as it isn’t known for royals to show so much skin. “They don’t usually wear sleeveless dresses and they usually wear clothes which are not too short in the hemline because of bending down and sitting in public,” Messervy told InStyle.

This mama-to-be is staying put. Pregnant Duchess Meghan (née Markle) and Prince Harrywill not attend Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ wedding in India, a source exclusively tells Us Weekly.

A second source adds that “Meghan will not be going to Priyanka’s wedding, especially now that she is pregnant.” (Chopra attended Markle’s wedding to the prince in England in May.)

Chopra, 36, and Jonas, 26, are set to tie the knot in the actress’ native India this weekend, and have already begun their prenuptial celebrations, including a traditional a Puja — a Hindu pre-marriage ritual.

The event took place at Chopras’ home in Mumbai, with the “Chains” crooner wearing a traditional Indian outfit and the former Bollywood star decked out in an embroidered suit and sari.

The 37-year-old Duchess of Sussex, for her part, is expecting her first child with husband Prince Harry, whom she wed in May at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle in England.

The Suits alum and Prince Harry are keeping busy. Earlier this week it was announced that the soon-to-be-parents are set to move from their current home in at Nottingham Cottage in London to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, England, prior to the birth of their baby.

“There are 10 bedrooms, and the cottage does need some updating and renovations. It’s much bigger than Nottingham cottage, which only had two bedrooms and was very tight,” an insider told Us of Meghan and Harry’s two-story cottage, which was gifted to them by Queen Elizabeth II.

The pair — who announced news of their growing brood in October shortly after they embarked on their first royal tour as a married couple — “should be fully moved in shortly after the holidays,” according to the insider.
