Miesha Tate submits Julia Avila in the 3rd round!
I don't think Tate even really locked up the RNC. Looks like a crank that went across her mouth? Like it was open and Tate's forearm was between her lips, cranking on her jaw. Painful.
Completely one sided fight for Tate. Avila had no answers for basically anything Tate was doing. Went out and secured takedowns in the first 20-30 seconds of each round for 3 rounds, methodically working Avila over. Avila did well not to get too beat up I guess but she looked terrible from start to finish. No idea how to stop the takedown. No idea what to do off her back. Holding on to failed guillotines when Tate is in side control moving to mount. Not getting on her hips to create space. Just spent most of the fight looking lost.
Hope you're all ready for Tate to get a title fight. Cause she is 2-1 at bantamweight since coming back and the division has no type of new talent or stars.

A couple of other movies:
HEATWAVE: Watchable but routine 2022 thriller about a bisexual Black woman with a checkered past (Kat Graham) who lands an exciting job with an upscale commercial real estate firm and finds a sexy white girlfriend (Merritt Patterson), only to find herself in a world of trouble after discovering that her new girlfriend is actually the trophy wife of her jealous, domineering new boss (Sebastian Roché). Making the protagonist a Black woman is novel for this genre (although it has less impact on the plot than perhaps it should), and the Graham character is a resourceful heroine, but the plot isn't quite inventive enough to make up for the all-too-familiar premise, and the story can't seem to decide what note it wants to end on, leading to a less-than-satisfying resolution. The corny voiceover that bookends the film doesn't help either.
THE HOT SPOT: GIF sets floating around Tumblr might give you the mistaken impression that this 1990 thriller, directed by Dennis Hopper and starring Don Johnson, Virginia Madsen, and Jennifer Connelly, is some kind of forgotten sexy gem. In fact, it's a curiously lifeless neo-noir about a sleazy used car salesman (Johnson) in a small Texas town who attempts to juggle an ill-advised affair with his boss's vampish wife (Madsen), who has murder on her mind, with his pursuit of the dealership's financing manager (Connelly), a nice girl who's being blackmailed by a local ne'er-do-well (William Sadler) over her past lesbian affair with a now-dead female friend. Wants to evoke DOUBLE INDEMNITY and BODY HEAT, but it trips from plot point to plot point in disjointed, illogical fashion, failing to develop any real narrative momentum, much less suspense. Despite its murders, arson, and other assorted mayhem, it's ultimately just boring, with only the periodic scenes of Madsen or Connelly mostly naked to keep the viewer awake (although the movie defies convention in not making its one bisexual character a conniving femme fatale). Don't waste your time.
THE SQUAD: Frustratingly joyless, moderately exploitative 2023 action movie, written, produced, and directed by Rick Walker, about three ruthless, bikini-clad 20something white girls (Alea Hansinger, Meghan Carrasquillo, and Grace Evans), once rescued from foster care by a benefactor called Alpha (Jennifer Ferguson), who attempt to break into the drug scene on the Oklahoma coast in the run-up to spring break and quickly run afoul of the game's established players. The leering direction is a series of music video clichés — every scene feels like it's leading up to either a montage or a dance routine that's not forthcoming — and the clumsy script does a terrible job of establishing basic plot and character details (the girls' relationship with Alpha, the most potentially interesting part of the story, is consigned to a handful of awkwardly placed flashbacks). Of the poorly defined characters, only the girls' friend JC makes any impression, and then mostly because of the physical presence of MMA star Julia Avila (who isn't given much chance to demonstrate whether or not she can act). As demonstrated by the silly but entertaining 2018 remake of SUPERFLY (by Director X and Alex Tse), it's possible to do this kind of thing in a way that at least qualifies as dumb fun, but THE SQUAD is too mean-spirited to work even on that level, and the end titles' promise of a sequel seems more like a threat than a promise.

New Releases
A great mix of new releases this week that make it hard to choose which exactly one I will buy for myself to celebrate making it to spring break. What would you choose?
A Crown So Cursed (The Nightmare–Verse #3) by L.L. McKinney Imprint
In the third book in L.L. McKinney’s Nightmare-Verse trilogy, Alice gets one last chance to save Wonderland from itself.
Alice and the gang are trying to recover from recent events—but members of her crew start having weird dreams. The same dreams. It seems the evil in Wonderland may not be as defeated as they thought—because someone’s building an army of Nightmares to attack the mortal world. But before Alice jumps into battle, she discovers she has a personal connection to Wonderland, and she must face what it means for the fight ahead. — Cover image and summary via Goodreads
The Making of Yolanda la Bruja by Lorraine Avila Levine Querido
Yolanda Alvarez is having a good year. She’s starting to feel at home Julia De Burgos High, her school in the Bronx. She has her best friend Victory, and maybe something with Jose, a senior boy she’s getting to know. She’s confident her initiation into her family’s bruja tradition will happen soon.
But then a white boy, the son of a politician, appears at Julia De Burgos High, and his vibes are off. And Yolanda’s initiation begins with a series of troubling visions of the violence this boy threatens. How can Yolanda protect her community, in a world that doesn’t listen? Only with the wisdom and love of her family, friends, and community – and the Brujas Diosas, her ancestors and guides.
The Making of Yolanda La Bruja is the book this country, struggling with the plague of gun violence, so desperately needs, but which few could write. Here Lorraine Avila brings a story born from the intersection of race, justice, education, and spirituality that will capture readers everywhere. — Cover image and summary via Goodreads
Throwback by Maurene Goo Zando Young Readers
Back to the Future meets The Joy Luck Club in this YA contemporary romance about a Korean American girl sent back to the ’90s to (reluctantly) help her teenage mom win Homecoming Queen.
Being a first-generation Asian American immigrant is hard. You know what’s harder? Being the daughter of one. Samantha Kang has never gotten along with her mother, Priscilla—and has never understood her bougie-nightmare, John Hughes high school expectations. After a huge fight between them, Sam is desperate to move forward—but instead, finds herself thrown back. Way back.
To her shock, Sam finds herself back in high school . . . in the ’90s . . . with a 17-year-old Priscilla. Now this Gen Z girl must try to fit into an analog world. She’s got the fashion down, but everything else is baffling. What is “microfiche”? What’s with the casual racism and misogyny? And why does it feel like Priscilla is someone she could actually be . . . friends with?
Sam’s blast to the past has her finding the right romance in the wrong time while questioning everything she thought she knew about her mom . . . and herself. Will Sam figure out what she needs to do to fix things for her mom so that she can go back to a time she understands? Brimming with heart and humor, Maurene Goo’s time-travel romance asks big questions about what exactly one inherits and loses in the immigrant experience. — Cover image and summary via Goodreads
Viva Lola Espinoza! by Ella Cerón Kokila
A debut young adult novel that’s BOOKSMART with a dash of magic, about a Mexican American teen who spends the summer in Mexico City, meets two very cute boys, attempts to learn Spanish, and uncovers a family secret that changes her life forever.
Lola Espinoza is cursed in love. Well, maybe not actually cursed — magic isn’t real, is it? When Lola goes to spend the summer with her grandmother in Mexico City and meets handsome, flirtatious Rio, she discovers the unbelievable truth: Magic is very real, and what she’d always written off as bad luck is actually, truly . . . a curse. If Lola ever wants to fall in love without suffering the consequences, she’ll have to break the curse. She finds an unlikely curse-breaking companion in Javi, a seemingly stoic boy she meets while working in her cousin’s restaurant. Javi is willing to help Lola look into this family curse of hers, and Lola needs all the help she can get. Over the course of one summer — filled with food, family, and two very different boys — Lola explores Mexico City while learning about herself, her heritage, and the magic around us all. — Cover image and summary via Goodreads
Harvest House by Cynthia Leitich Smith Candlewick Press
Deftly leading readers to the literary crossroads of contemporary realism and haunting mystery, Cynthia Leitich Smith revisits the world of her American Indian Youth Literature Award winner Hearts Unbroken. Halloween is near, and Hughie Wolfe is volunteering at a new rural attraction: Harvest House. He’s excited to take part in the fun, spooky show—until he learns that an actor playing the vengeful spirit of an “Indian maiden,” a ghost inspired by local legend, will headline. Folklore aside, unusual things have been happening at night at the crossroads near Harvest House. A creepy man is stalking teenage girls and young women, particularly Indigenous women; dogs are fretful and on edge; and wild animals are behaving strangely. While Hughie weighs how and when to speak up about the bigoted legend, he and his friends begin to investigate the crossroads and whether it might be haunted after all. As Moon rises on All Hallow’s Eve, will they be able to protect themselves and their community? Gripping and evocative, Harvest House showcases a versatile storyteller at her spooky, unsettling best. — Cover image and summary via Goodreads
Ooops! We missed a book last week. What do you think of this new release?
Forget Me Not by Alyson Derrick Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
A romantic ode to the strength of love and the power of choosing each other, against odds and obstacles, again and again.
What would you do if you forgot the love of your life ever even existed?
Stevie and Nora had a love. A secret, epic, once-in-a-lifetime kind of love. They also had a plan: to leave their small, ultra-conservative town and families behind after graduation and move to California, where they could finally stop hiding that love.
But then Stevie has a terrible fall. And when she comes to, she can remember nothing of the last two years—not California, not coming to terms with her sexuality, not even Nora. Suddenly, Stevie finds herself in a life she doesn’t quite understand, one where she’s estranged from her parents, drifting away from her friends, lying about the hours she works, dating a boy she can’t remember crushing on, and headed towards a future that isn’t at all what her fifteen-year-old self would have envisioned.
And Nora finds herself…forgotten. Can the two beat the odds a second time and find their way back together when “together” itself is just a lost memory?

UFC - Fight Night, Dariush vs Tsarukyan
December 2nd's edition of UFC Fight Night took place in the Moody Center at Austin, Texas and proved to me that if you miss the prelims, you may end up missing out on some good moments. In this post, I will be reviewing the main card, but I will gloss over some of the prelim fights.
Tumblr media
Prelims
Veronica Hardy def. Jamey-Lyn Horth
The card was kicked off by a Women's 125 matchup that resulted in a split decision victory for Veronica Hardy. I missed this fight.
Jared Gooden def. Wellington Turman
Jared Gooden ended up scoring a 2nd round submission. Amazing comeback. I missed this fight as well.
Rodolfo Bellato def. Ihor Potieria
Ihor Potieria was dangerously close to finishing before he gassed out and was finished by Rodolfo Bellato in the 2nd round. I once again missed this fight.
Drakkar Klose def. Joe Solecki
This is when I began to regret tuning out, because this ended in a slam knockout by Drakkar Klose. Fight ended 1 minute and 41 seconds in to the first round.
Cody Brundage def. Zachary Reese
I tuned in when this fight began, and I was a little disappointed I didn't get to see the slam knockout in the last fight, but I was quickly elated when this became the first UFC event to have two slam knockouts. Cody Brundage won the fight by slamming Zachary Reese on the side of his head as he held on to an arm-bar.
Nobody learned from Rose Namajunas that there is risk in holding on to an arm bar while your opponent is standing. It's also odd how both slam knockouts were within 8 seconds of each other, because this fight ended 1 minute and 49 seconds in to the first round.
Miesha Tate def. Julia Avila
Miesha Tate proved once again that she is still a good fight for anyone in the Women's Bantamweight division by achieving a submission victory in the third round.
Main Card
Dustin Stoltzfus def. Punahele Soriano
Dustin Stoltzfus is the weirdest fighter in my eyes, because I was almost certain that he retired after getting knocked out by Abus Magomedov, but he came from out of nowhere and submitted his opponent in the 2nd round.
I'm hoping for a good career resurgence from Stoltzfus, but I am not 100% certain he'll make it far in Middleweight.
Joaquim Silva def. Clay Guida
This was a back and forth fight, with Joaquim Silva edging out a unanimous decision in an action packed 3 round affair.
Clay Guida has cemented his legacy in my eyes, and while he can still keep fighting I think retirement will be weighing in on him soon enough.
Sean Brady def. Kelvin Gasteleum
Honestly, I think 170 is good for Kelvin Gasteleum. Sean Brady beat him by submission in the 3rd round, but I still think that Kelvin can have much better success at 170 than 185.
Deiveson Figureido def. Rob Font
This fight showcased Deiveson's amazing power and how he has only strengthened after he moved up in weight from 125.
Deiveson will soon be entering the Bantamweight rankings, as Rob Font was ranked #8.
Jalin Turner def. Bobby Green
This fight proved that even though I feel like the UFC has the best referees, there is still a lot of work to be done to make the sport safer. Jalin Turner knocked out Bobby Green 2 minutes and 37 seconds in to the first round, but the referee forced Jalin Turner to continue to ground and pound Bobby Green, and had finally stopped the fight at 2 minutes and 49 seconds.
Kerry Hatley should not be allowed to referee any more fights. This is extremely dangerous officiating that should be dealt with accordingly.
Arman Tsarukyan def. Beneil Dariush
I had high hopes from Beneil going in to this fight, and pre-fight shenanigans made me despise Arman on a massive level. The hotel altercation with Bobby Green was extremely disappointing to me when I looked at what Arman was doing during fight week.
Unfortunately for me, Arman ended up knocking out Beneil in the 1st round with a knee and punches. The fight just barely surpassed 1 minute.
Overall, the main event did not disappoint and Arman has proved that he should be one of the next people in line to fight Islam Makhachev for the Lightweight championship.
Overall Rating
8.5/10
I really enjoyed this week's UFC event. Some serious stakes in the main event for a potential title opportunity, the two men in the co-main are always down to fight. The undercard was super entertaining.
UFC fans always eat good.
