Singer-Songwriter Melina Coolen Debuts Beautiful New Single “Behind Every Cloud”
Tumblr media
Melina Coolen is a Canadian musician, songwriter, producer and audio engineer. Her retropop influence is undeniable in her carefully self-produced sound and sophisticated songwriting style. After years of formal classical training and receiving the RCM Silver Medal in piano, she pursued her love for pop and jazz songwriting in college and university. Paying homage to the Brill Building greats, Melina researched production and recording techniques of the past while studying at Ryerson University. There, she released her debut EP, All of My Life, in 2017 in conjunction with her master’s thesis on analog and digital recording hybrids.
Part of a new instrumental series, Melina is sharing the poignant and heartfelt piece “Behind Every Cloud.”
I composed this piece about eight winters ago shortly after my grandfather passed away. I’m a spiritual person, and I could sense the response in nature and his presence. For about a week or two after his passing, I remember the sun being extra vivid in the sky. Once I looked out my window on a stormy day and the clouds were dark but the sun was shining brightly behind them. It was very striking and inspired “Behind Every Cloud.”

Laura Mena
‘A lesson I have learned’ is Laura Mena's first song of off her debut EP with the same name. Although the song has sensual undertones it's really about shedding the negative impact of a bad relationship and by learning from that becoming a better and stronger version of yourself. Mena specializes in meaningful songwriting and beautiful tunes. She has written all of her released songs so far and even produced this new EP herself with a little help. She dabbles between RNB/Bedroom pop and slow pop songs. Listen to ‘A lesson I have learned’ below.
Amy Wilde
Alternative artist, Amy Wilde, has released her latest single, ‘All Its Bodies’. The unsigned singer-songwriter has elevated her previous production and transcends genre from Indie to Alt Rock. Wilde worked with Brighton based producer, David Evans, who mixed ‘All Its Bodies’ which will appeal to fans of PJ Harvey and Wolf Alice. ‘All Its Bodies’ is a commentary on the addiction of self-destructive behaviour and the strain of the male gaze that fetishises mental illness. With unwavering honesty, Wilde lyrically portrays themes such as body dysmorphia, self-harm and fetishisation to accompany the rock instrumentation and choral middle eight drop. Wilde commented on the themes of ‘All Its Bodies’: “I want to inspire people to create something out of their internal hells instead of becoming them themselves… I am immensely proud of the healing process I’ve accomplished to externally acknowledge and process many of the themes in All Its Bodies, and hope that I can encourage others to safely express and create something out of their personal battles too.” Listen below.
Laura Dia
Southampton-based soul singer Laura Dia ends her proclaimed "single-series" project with a final song, part 2 of the series: ‘Hold it’. Laura Dia started sharing her music through covers on the social media platforms, Instagram and Youtube. In the summer of 2020 she began developing her skills as a producer alongside being an instrumentalist and singer. Since then she has recorded, produced and released her own music, independently discovering her own sound. After gaining confidence in her songwriting and production she decided to make her official debut with a collection of three singles forming a 3-part story. This soul-baring project on the wanting, having and losing stages of love was introduced with her debut single ‘What Now’, released late 2021. Followed soon after by her second single, ‘All In For You’, this collection of songs blends elements of Soul, R&B and Hip-Hop to create a fresh sound. The closing song, ‘Hold It’, represents the "having" stage of Love."'Hold It' is about appreciating the present moment, the lyrics ask to pause time and compares all the beautiful moments in a relationship to what we see and read in movies and books,” says Laura. “The world is so fast-paced, we forget to exist in the here and now and rush through everything incluing our relationships. I hope that when people listen they'll be reminded to appreciate where they are, in romantic relationships, in friendships, with family. Love is universal." Listen below.

Girl in the mirror
Girl in the mirror is a music producer, vocalist and songwriter based in Budapest, Hungary, who releases light, emotional, energetic electronic music since 2018. Thanks to her classical music background, she understands almost all phases of the creative process, from composing, playing instruments, and singing to producing. Visuals that support the story told through her music are also important to her musical world, and she often creates animated videos to the unique world of her songs. Seeing the first snowfall together with someone has special significance in Korean culture – it carries the promise of romantic love. The melody of her song ‘Snowfall in Seoul’ evokes flashing neon lights and the buzz of a big city as well as the exhausted excitement of long flights. The story the song tells is that of a long-distance relationship – the roller coaster of longing and meeting, and the rush of meeting. The song introduces energetic, playful synths and a pulsing beat that adds further layers of the excitement told through the vocals, making this a cool selection for cozy winter nights. Listen below.

Minerva Daisy
Manchester based alt-pop singer-songwriter and keyboardist, Minerva Daisy, has unveiled her new song ‘Something Strange’, her fourth single to be independently released since 2020. The pop-rock anthem – recorded and produced by Tayte Nickols at Mad Fox Manchester - once again underscores why Minerva is the one of Manchester’s young artists to watch as she leaves a blazing trail of success behind her and a bright future ahead. On ‘Something Strange’ Minerva delivers a catchy, upbeat and dynamic pop-rock track, brilliantly undercut by the frankness of her lyrics tackling the betrayal of a partner and the emotions that follow. Minerva says of the song: “‘Something Strange’ was written as an emotional outlet almost immediately after I found out an ex partner had been unfaithful to me. This is probably one of the most raw and brutally emotional tracks that I have written and so I wanted the instrumentation to reflect that and give the track the punch it needed. I wanted to show my audience a new side to me and my music.” Listen below.

Pem
Singer-songwriter Pem crafts a world of dreamlike indie folk that is gallantly confessional yet hauntingly fragile. With a husky voice that trembles and purrs like Eartha Kitt’s vibrato, her lullaby-like tone, poetry laced lyrics and unfiltered emotion lull listeners into a warm hazy state of vulnerable contemplation. Raised in rural Hampshire, now a multi-lingual literature scholar and therapist in training, Pem’s literary psychoanalytical approach to music makes them a natural at writing songs for the sentimental. With musical references such as Jeff Buckley and Joni Mitchell, Pem’s tone harkens back to the French chanteuses in music halls of days gone-by. Drawing on ethereal strains of the Cocteau Twins, the pure notes of Jessica Pratt and Laura Marling and the raw notes of Elliot Smith expect to take a global and era-defying tour of your emotions with Pem clasped neatly in your hands and heart. Sultry single ‘Lullaby London’ feels as though grown in the 70’s, it’s layered with wandering piano melodies, sylphlike harmonies and fairytale-like field sounds of wind chimes, trains and birdsong. A soothing cinematic refrain for the insomniacs, Pem recorded these sounds roaming around early hours. In this hushed, rhythmic dreamscape, she is floating, sleepless and dissociated, whispering her cradle song to the city asking it to “stop and stay for the night”. Listen below.

Tamsyn
Tamsyn is a folk-inspired singer-songwriter, born in Cape Town, South Africa, but currently residing on the picturesque Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. Enamoured with singing and story-telling from an early age, she draws on her travels, reflection, dreams and own life-experiences to create songs of substance that genuinely connect with her audience. Tamsyn’s music falls between the vast soundscapes of alternative folk, blues and adult contemporary genres, highlighting her versatility and ability to paint pictures through her lyrics and melodies. Recently, Tamsyn has announced her debut EP which comes highly recommended to any fan of artists such as Joy Williams, the Audreys and Mazzy Star. The lyrics are poetic and insightful and the vocals haunting and hypnotic, perfectly evoking the emotions within the stories told. As someone who also works in the education and mental health field, Tamsyn is a strong advocate for the power of music in relation to healing and self-expression. For this reason, she uses her songwriting as an outlet and a way to reach out to others. The song ‘Take You Away’ was written during a little getaway to a beautiful farm surrounded by mountains and lake in gera lario, Italy. It is autobiographical in nature and tells the story of wishing to be able to heal a lover’s troubling thoughts and hurts at the expense of oneself. It came about from a learning that a woman’s role is not to “fix” a man she loves, especially if her needs are not being met and she does not feel heard or seen. Listen below.

Melina Coolen
Melina Coolen is a Canadian musician, songwriter and audio engineer. Her retropop influence is undeniable in her carefully self-produced sound and sophisticated songwriting style. After years of formal classical training and receiving the RCM Silver Medal in piano, she pursued her love for pop and jazz songwriting in college and university. Continuing to pay homage to the Brill Building greats, Melina researched production and recording techniques of the past while studying her master’s at Ryerson University. There, she released her debut EP, All of My Life, in 2017 in conjunction with her masters thesis on analog and digital recording hybrids. Her new single is ‘I Believe In You and Me’. "I wrote 'I Believe in You and Me' as a song to help me and others move forwards and persevere during the tough days of lockdown. You can hear the battle scars, but you can also hear the strength to carry on in faith. I like to think of my EP Windows as a collection of moments or windows into people’s lives. The inspiration for the album title, ‘Windows’, came from my time living in a new city. Although it was lonely at first, I felt comfort watching the city light up and come to life at night. There were other people out there, each with their own story - maybe some like mine! So collectively, I think it’s fun to think of the whole EP like stepping into someone’s window and having them sing their stories to you like a musical!" Listen below.
