common grounds (oshamir) - chapter 9
Tumblr media
Pairing: Osha Aniseya x Qimir "The Stranger"
A/N: dividers by @cafekitsune
series masterlist
chapter 9: baseline
Tumblr media
Sol’s apartment was too big. In recent years, he had repeatedly tried for something approaching minimalism. Every time the empty beige walls would echo harshly at any disruption in the silence, his sentimentality would creep back in. Like kudzu, functionality and aesthetic would become choked by nostalgia. News clippings, photographs, pressed flowers, and sometimes even torn pages from books.
Sol’s house was also too quiet. All that space made the silence seem like another being was in the room, unspeaking but observing. It unnerved Osha at first. After the accident, she wasn’t released from the hospital for a week. Mae had already been living with Sol, and by the time Osha got there, it felt like there had been no room left for her to exist.
Just Sol, Mae, and the silence.
It was the opposite of her stranger’s apartment.
Right now, she wished she was there and not here.
A dark raincloud hung over the dinner table. It was full of everything that had happened over the last week: the issues with her job, her access to gym classes, not to mention the entirely new person in her life. The drama with the junior trainer job seemed like a goddamn lifetime ago. It made the buildup of this family dinner feel fraught with tension: any topic could be on the table, and with how long it had been, Osha wasn’t confident which secrets were off the table or not.
She was thinking about her first training session with the stranger that evening—good motivation to survive the meal. She had been looking forward to it all day, resting just like he’d told her to. She even admitted she felt relaxed for the first time, and then—
“Are we not going to talk about it?”
Osha stabbed her food a bit violently in response to Sol’s question.
Mae said nothing.
“Why aren’t we talking about it?” he tried again.
“Because we don’t want to talk about it,” Osha said with forced lightness.
“Oshie, come on…”
“Whaaat?” Osha groaned. “I’m fucking over it. Take the job, I don’t care anymore.”
“That’s not what we’re talking about,” Sol said. He set down his utensils, abandoning any pretense that this was to be their usual scripted dinner conversation.
She sighed and did the same. “If you want to do an intervention, you’re a few days late. I’ve already gone cold turkey from the gym.”
“So you did quit?” Mae said softly.
“It was more that I was quit on. For fucking boxing classes.”
“Vernestra’s request wasn’t unreasonable, Osha,” Sol sighed.
Very well. They were talking about it.
“Vernestra didn’t request shit from me. Is that what she told you? She restricted my membership to the fuckin Groupon level for no reason! No upper-level classes, no more than twice a week? Those classes literally happen during my shifts. I’d have to come in on my three remaining days off to take any classes. Why, what did she fuckin’ tell you, Sol? What did the fuckin’ group chats tell you, Mae?”
“Language, please,” he said in a pained voice, rubbing at his eyes. “You were obviously upset in my class the last time I saw you. Is training at the Temple really somewhere you want to be four days a week if you are so upset?”
“Have you asked yourself why I was upset yesterday? I was upset when I walked in. Ask Mae about it.”
Osha got up from the table despite protests from her sister and her dad. She ignored them and went to the bathroom in the hall, frustrated to all hell. Her phone was back in her bag, so she couldn’t just waste time until she could leave. Still, she managed to fuck around doing nothing for all of ten minutes before Mae came knocking.
“I have to talk to you.”
“Mae, just go away—”
“It’s about—well. You know who.”
Osha opened the door and came out quietly. “Where’s Sol?” she murmured, crossing her arms and leaning on the doorframe.
“He said he had to get something in his car. I think he needs a second to himself.”
“You mean he’s avoiding an uncomfortable situation.”
I didn’t hear from Vernestra or any of the other trainers at the Temple once.
Part of Osha wanted to feel bad for snapping at her dad like that, but the louder part said that she was hurt more. She spoke the truth to her stranger yesterday; she was tired of this shit. Besides, it wasn’t her job to suppress her emotions just for a grown man to feel better about himself.
“What do you want, Mae?”
“I need to ask you if all this, all the lashing out, was done on purpose because you wanted to train with Qimir.”
Huh. What?
“…who the fuck is Qimir?”
Mae looked like Osha had grown another head. “The guy I trained with for two years?” she said slowly.
Qimir.
When Mae said the name, dripping with disdain, it didn’t suit him. Osha’s mind completely rejected it. If it truly was his name, it only suited part of him—a mistranslation of who he actually was. The new information slid off Osha’s impression of the stranger like water on glass.
No, that suited him better—the stranger.
“What about him?” Osha asked, trying to control the shake in her voice.
Mae crossed her arms, matching Osha and leaning on the wall opposite her. Osha didn’t meet her eyes; instead, she looked at the frames behind her shoulder and above her head. Mae’s frustration mounted, and after Osha’s deliberate obtuseness, she huffed, “Did you quit the Temple to train with him?”
Osha’s eye twitched. What right did Mae have to her personal life when she’d been so prohibitive about her own? She matched her sister’s pose but still refused to look at her. “Weren’t you listening? I didn’t quit, I was quit on.”
“You don’t think Vernestra has a point?”
“No.”
Mae stuttered a bit, clearly meaning it as a rhetorical question but getting an honest answer anyway. “I mean, you’re not—” Mae shifted from foot to foot. “It’s been a long time since you, uh.”
“You don’t think I can fight competitively either?” Osha said, finally meeting her eyes with a glare. “What did I do to you to make you lose your faith in me?”
Mae flinched a little, hurt but unable to refute Osha’s claim. “Listen, that’s not what I’m talking about. So are you—”
“It’s what I’m talking about. I’m not telling you anything for a while, Mae. If I want to tell you something, I’ll tell you. And like I told you yesterday, when I ask you something, I want honesty. I don’t think you’ll give me that, so that’s why I haven’t asked you anything at all.”
“Well, if you are training with him—”
“I don’t want your advice about this, Mae. Can you just drop it? For, like, maybe an actual week? You had two years to tell me all about him. Give me a while to process it without being supervised.”
“You know what? Fine. Have it your way, Osha. I just wanted to remedy things and warn you about who you’re getting involved with.”
He hasn’t lied to me yet, she didn’t say. Mae walked away, and Osha watched her for a few seconds before rubbing at her chest and pacing the hallway.
She approached the room they used to share. Sol had converted it into a guest room after they’d moved to their new apartment downstairs, but he never had overnight guests. His social circle was the same as the ‘old guard’ trainers: they kept things within the Temple and didn’t make friends from other gyms on principle.
Still, the baseless hope of having someone stay remained.
Osha sat on the end of the bed, with pretty memories of the past warring against the fucked-up present. The light purple walls of childhood, adorned with ribbons and proud accomplishments, had been replaced by model-home greige and even more photographs. Two beds, now one. Pictures of strangers where there used to be pictures of friends.
It hurt to hold onto the nostalgia for too long. Osha abandoned the bed and looked at the pictures hanging on what was once her side of the room.
Sol had no rhyme or reason for the wall decor in his guest room. His more impressive memories and keepsakes were in the living room—the things here were most likely moments that didn’t fit in, but he couldn’t throw them away for whatever reason. Photos of a younger Sol on his college boxing team sat above another photo of Osha at high school graduation, and next to that one was—
There were many children she didn’t recognize in that photograph. As if in a trance, she approached the small frame. She recognized the Temple, of course, but the marked youth of each person she recognized told her it was from a long time ago. Sol was in the back, beside Vernestra, Kelnacca, Indara, and Torbin—who hadn’t yet lost his eye. The five children standing before the coaches smiled with varying enthusiasm, but her eyes remained focused on the grinning little boy in glasses standing before Vernestra.
He looked older than the other children but seemed the most excited of them all. His eyes almost disappeared under the force of his goofy grin, toothy and familiar—he’d grown up since then. This little boy suited the name Mae had told her. Qimir.
Like the frame at the Temple, she popped open the back. She moved carefully as she removed the newspaper clipping from behind the glass, and held it gently as she unfolded the rest of the article.
TEMPLE GYM OUTREACH PROGRAM SETS CHARITABLE STANDARD
Vernestra Rwoh, 36, has owned and managed Temple Gym for ten years. She has started the Padawan Training Program in collaboration with the Federal District Orphanage to provide community support to the underprivileged. “For most children, their first mentors are their parents. For children without parents, finding that kind of personal guidance to navigate the world is much harder,” Rwoh said in an interview. “Though the initial scope of our program is quite small, the biggest changes start with the smallest of actions. We hope to expand to provide more opportunities to underprivileged children in the city.”
The rest of the article felt sterile and self-congratulatory, providing little information about the program.  Osha gathered that it was an outreach program training orphaned children to box. She looked back at the photograph. Beneath it, she found his name listed after Torbin’s in the smallest font.
Qimir Loharne (13)
When I was thirteen, the rods were removed, and the doctors at the spine clinic said I should join this… outreach program that was starting at the Temple.
He was thirteen. Imagining the abuse he went through over the next four years made her stomach turn. Osha refolded the news clipping and carefully tucked it under her shirt, against her skin. Her hands shook with barely repressed anger.
Hastily, she covered up where the article had been with a framed photo of herself winning third at the science fair. Looking around the rest of the room, she wondered if he was hiding—being hidden—in any other frames, but she couldn’t find anything.
She didn’t know why she was disappointed.
Tumblr media
He was waiting for her when she came down from her apartment a few hours later. Night had fallen in the city, but city nights were never as dark as she wanted. The crescent moon that had walked her and the stranger home the night before had grown into almost a waxing quarter moon—she’d started keeping track of the moon phases as a brand-new member of Unknown Planet.
His car idled as he leaned on the passenger-side door casually. He looked like a cool, dangerous love interest in a romance movie: dressed all in black, with his hair somewhat falling into his eyes above his glasses, arms crossed, one leg bent slightly in front of the other. Osha couldn’t look that cool if she tried. All that remained of the small cut on his face was a small red line on his cheekbone. His attention was on a little device in his hands she couldn’t see, so engrossed in it that he didn’t look up when she stopped at the sidewalk.
“Hello,” she greeted him.
He looked up, watching her approach. “Hello.”
Osha felt rooted in place under his gaze, the weight of his name sitting heavily on her mind. “Hi,” she said, cringing inwardly. Would she ever interact with him where she didn’t act like a fool within the first ten minutes?
“Hi…” His head tilted to the side, his eyes flitting over her frozen state. He pocketed the device and approached. “Are you alright?”
The incident at Sol’s had thoroughly fucked up whatever measure of calm she’d gained from the day’s rest and recovery. Her mind was all over the place, unable to focus on one thing for long. The folded-up newspaper weighed heavily against her heart from inside her jacket. She nodded tightly in response to his question.
His smile faded a little. “Are you having second thoughts?”
“No! No.” Osha sighed and pressed her cold hands to her face. “I’m so scatterbrained today; it’s not you.” Some of it’s you.
“You wanna talk about it?” he asked, his voice dropping into that soothing tone he used when she was in pain the other day.
“Maybe,” she said. “Can we get out of the cold first?”
“Of course.”
Before she could protest, he’d taken her gym bag off her shoulder and walked back to his car to open the door for her. She followed him like he had her on a damn leash. Wait, did she like that? She really was a goddamn mess tonight.
Once he loaded her bag into the backseat, he paused before getting in. He reached into his pocket to retrieve the device he’d been playing with, only then getting inside.
“Is that an iPod mini?” Osha guffawed.
“If it ain’t broke…” he said with a grin. “I prefer more analog things, if you couldn’t tell.”
“You use a flip phone and drive a car that could survive a nuclear apocalypse. I don’t know why I’m surprised you have an actual iPod. You probably also have a pocket watch and a VHS collection.”
“I resent that,” he huffed. “I have two pocket watches.”
Their banter set her at ease for the rest of the drive to Unknown Planet. The music on his iPod wasn’t what she usually listened to, but she enjoyed it enough not to speak over it. They passed the bar’s street entrance, and he drove down a side street to a private parking lot. He parked but didn’t move to get out just yet.
It’s your call, the silence said. We don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to.
Osha got out of the car.
Her stranger held the door for her as she walked in and followed behind as she took the stairs. This was the path they’d taken after she watched him fight for the first time, the stairs leading up to the third-floor dressing rooms. He unlocked the black door and ushered her inside with a hand on her lower back.
As they removed their winter jackets and shoes, he told her the plan for the evening: “I need to establish a baseline. I told you I’ve seen you fight, but it was only recorded footage and obviously nothing from after your injury. Seeing you move in person will give me a better idea of where to focus first.”
“How much of tonight involves jumping or running?” she asked, eyeing the rolls of tape in her bag.
“None,” he said, digging through his backpack for a pair of shorts. He tossed his glasses on top of the bag before entering the bathroom to change. Osha scrambled to do the same while he’d given her some measure of privacy, peeling off her jeans and t-shirt.
“There are plenty of ways to do cardio without exacerbating injuries,” he continued. This felt a little like their second meeting: when she changed her shirt behind a wall, and he mopped up at the cafe. “Repetitive exercises like jump rope, running, and machine workouts risk worsening your condition the more you rely on them.”
That was promising.
“Then what are we doing for cardio?” she asked, shimmying into her tank top.
“For now, swimming. Eventually, sparring. Can you swim?”
“Yeah. I didn’t know there’s a pool here.”
“There isn’t. You don’t have to worry about that until tomorrow, but we’ll be using the one at home.”
His wording had her hands nearly slipping on her shorts as she pulled them up her thighs. She corrected the fumble, snapping the waistband around her hips and folding it like usual.
“Swimming is easier on injuries,” he continued. “It uses every muscle group, and adding resistance to workouts is much safer.” He emerged from the bathroom without a shirt, going through his bag while he spoke—as if she wasn’t poleaxed seeing him like this from such a short distance. He had nothing on but low-slung basketball shorts and his socks.
“Cool,” Osha said, mind a million miles away. “Cool.”
He pulled a shirt on, followed by his glasses and a black baseball cap that kept his hair out of his eyes. “Let’s get you ready for me, hm?” He gestured to the chair when she didn’t move in response to him.
“Cool!” She wanted to slap herself. She needed to get it the fuck together. “I’ve got tape in my bag—”
“Have you used KT tape before?” He opened a drawer at the small desk beside her, revealing several thick rolls in various colors.
“Kinesiotherapy tape?”
“What’s with the face?”
Osha tried to quit scowling, but she’d already been called out for it. “Well, isn’t it… not as good as athletic tape?”
He placed several rolls beside him in a neat line, along with scissors. “Each has their benefit,” he said. “Neither is wholly better than the other. I’m guessing you haven’t used it before, then?”
“No.”
“Tell me how you wrap your ankle.”
As she explained her usual methods, she couldn’t help peeking at the colorful tapes he had brought out. Some even had little designs on them—shooting stars, rainbow stripes, and the feral river otter mascot of the college he worked at.
It was definitely much cuter than the standard white athletic tape and flesh tone pre-wrap.
He nodded. “Would you mind trying something new? Just to see if you like it.”
Osha was growing familiar with the urge to perform well for him, and it didn’t irritate her as much as it probably should have. She nodded, and he gave her a brilliant smile. Her heart fluttered in her chest like a bird taking flight.
He talked her through what he was doing, first measuring out pieces of tape, then cutting them up and applying them to her foot, ankle, knee, and thigh in bands of red and black. Aside from the aesthetic advantage, she appreciated that she didn’t have to loosen up her sneakers the way she did after layers of pre-wrap and athletic tape.
She also appreciated how his hands felt on her bare skin.
“There. Walk around a bit. If you want it off, the adhesive won’t fully set for another fifteen minutes or so.”
The method she’d been taught to use before had been good for reducing swelling and preventing sprains and strains, but sometimes, it felt like her ankle was just being squished, not supported. The KT tape felt like how she wanted her ankle to feel. With so much more freedom of movement, she almost felt like a newborn deer, amazed she could stand and walk like this. Holy fuck.
“That good?”
Shit, she’d said that out loud. He was still on the floor, putting away the rest of the tape and tugging on his shoes.
“Yeah,” she laughed. “This is crazy.” She bounced on her feet a little. She must have looked silly as hell doing lunges around the dressing room, but he only regarded her with a look of fond amusement she was growing accustomed to. He asked for a hand up.
When he got to his feet, they ended up inches apart, their height difference made glaringly obvious. Osha was surprised to find she liked it. His height, his arms, his broad fucking shoulders—they didn’t intimidate her like they probably had done for Mae. She took a breath, settling into a comfortable, calm mindset.
“Let’s go,” he murmured, touching her waist and spinning her toward the door.
The gym above Unknown Planet looked completely different from the last time she saw it. The cage had been dismantled and replaced by a large sparring mat, where pairs of people faced off—wearing anything from singlets to gis to clothes similar to what Osha was wearing. While a few individuals were locked in at the punching bags or machines, many were clustered in small groups, working together or encouraging one another. They were laughing and having fun.
Osha could count on one hand the number of times she heard laughter at the Temple. She’d need no hands to count the number of times she’d had fun in the last six years.
He led them to an empty area. Her nerves were going wild, and the prospect of disappointing him felt terrible and inevitable. But he trucked ahead. “For our warmups, we’re going to…” He showed her a series of stretches and light calisthenics to get her loose and warm. He never spoke down to her or overexplained his choices. When they were finished warming up, he checked in.
Honesty came easier with him.
“I feel like my ankle’s a little weaker. It’s not weak like failing, but not as strong as I thought. The tape helps a lot.”
He nodded, looking her over. “Can you go up on just your right foot? Flat.” He knelt before her to see better, then put her hand on his shoulder so she’d be balanced. “Up on your toes. Flat. Good. Again.”
Osha was going just a little fucking mad. Just a little, though. He seemed to like flustering her. He tended to get himself into situations where she was above him, and he was on her knees beneath her. She followed his instructions, doing a few calf raise holds on her good leg, then her injured one. Her body obeyed his instruction on autopilot, but her mind was elsewhere. Her mind was honed in on two precise places: where his thumb rubbed back and forth against her ankle, and where her hand lay flat against the shifting muscles in his shoulder.
“I see what you mean,” he said, letting go. He adjusted his glasses and tugged down his sock. “There are a few muscle groups attached to the Achilles tendon…”
He explained exactly what she was feeling, even having her put her hand on the back of his calf while he repeated the same moves she had just done. For once, the uncontrollably horny part of her brain remained silent, instead fascinated by his intelligent explanations. It was a mystery how he could even pretend to be a bumbling idiot.
She asked him so many questions, and he patiently answered each one to her satisfaction. Osha had never felt so respected and cared for in a training setting and wondered when that would change.
The rest of their session passed just like that. They hadn’t done much training overall, but by the end of things, she knew more about her ankle and knee. The formless pain now had names, faces, and weaknesses that could be exploited for her benefit—maybe even defeated.
By the time he brought her back to his dressing room, midnight had already passed. She was more worn out than she expected after so uneventful a training session.
“On the mat, Osha.”
Oh, there was her horny brain—back with a vengeance.
She tried her best to look graceful and attractive as she lowered herself to the mat, but her ankle had finally had enough of her, and it ended up being more like a slow-motion ragdoll collapse. She supposed that was what she deserved, trying to be cool in front of him. Shit, she was more tired than she thought.
But still, the yoga mat felt nice. Being flat felt nice. Her body, for once, felt nice. She groaned happily. “Yeah, mat. Great idea.”
He laughed softly and knelt beside her. His hand went to the back of her right calf, pressing his thumbs into her muscles with light pressure at first, then deeper when she didn’t flinch away in pain.
“What are you doing?” she asked, turning her head.
“You might be two and a half years out of practice, but most call this a massage.”
She kicked blindly at him with her other foot. His hand caught her quickly, avoiding any of her injured areas. She calmed down, and he continued his massage.
“Unlike athletic tapes, the KT tape can be worn for up to five days. It’s waterproof, too, so when we go to the pool tomorrow, you’ll still have the same support correcting your ankle and knee to the right tension. You can take it off at any time with a bit of oil, and if you need me, I’m never too busy to help you.”
It was harder to pay attention to him when he had his hands on her, and between the relief he gave her and the soothing tones of his voice saying such lovely things, she almost fell asleep right there. When he finally finished, she felt like her bones had gone al dente. He gave her time to change in the bathroom, and she was surprised to see the silly smile adorning her face.
You are sooo fucked, she mouthed at her reflection.
She only smiled back.
It was a little after one in the morning when they returned to the apartment complex. He parked in front of her building, idling in one of the covered spots he didn’t own. Neither of them spoke, and she didn’t move to get out. Something in the air felt taut with tension, obvious but unacknowledged. He inhaled like he would break the silence, but her anxious mouth got there first.
“I found another picture of you.” She unzipped her jacket to the inside breast pocket, where she’d carefully tucked the news clipping from Sol’s place. She gave it to him, and his jaw flexed as he looked it over.
She expected all manner of responses from him—So now you know my name. Do you believe my story now? What a long time agobut instead, he asked her, “Why do you give me these?”
She’d been asking herself that same question. Looking at the little boy in the picture, she said, “You told me, before you took me to the bar the first time, that there was a time that you had no evidence you existed besides your pain. You shouldn’t have been—it’s just—” She exhaled harshly, staring out the windshield and fidgeting with her hands. “You do exist beyond what happened to you. And you deserve to have proof of that.”
After her halting explanation, her mind felt clearer. The nervous buzzing of her thoughts had ceased—at least temporarily. When he—when Qimir—no—when her stranger didn’t say anything for a while, she turned to look at him and was immediately caught in the snare of his gaze.
He’d leaned in toward her, lips slightly parted and eyes a little unfocused as they flitted about—eye to eye, then down to her mouth. Osha couldn’t breathe, couldn’t move. She could only endure the wildfire he ignited in her body, heat licking through every inch of her. His teeth slowly sunk into his lower lip, and he moved forward another inch—
“Osha,” he whispered, soft as a prayer and most likely unintentional. The sound of her name on his tongue made her shudder, and her eyes fell shut. He inhaled quickly, reality and reason coming back to him all at once.
She opened her eyes when she felt him sit back in his seat and found him straight-backed and controlled. “Thank you,” he managed to say after some silent seconds. His voice sounded rougher, full of an emotion she couldn’t place. She hoped it was desire and not regret.
“You’re welcome,” she whispered. “I can, um. I can stop pushing them on you if it makes you—”
“No.”
She blinked. “No?”
“I appreciate you bringing them to me. They… you’re right. They’re signs of a life I had taken from me. It’s more than I had of myself yesterday.”
Osha smiled helplessly, leaning back against the headrest to look at him. For the first time in a long while, she felt proud of herself.

Note
I interpreted SAG not forcing members to break contracts they had already signed for fan cons to mean they didn’t have to withdraw their participation but members were still bound by strike rules that they can’t talk about struck work. My understanding is if members break this rule even at a fan con where they had already signed a agreement that would be a violation of the strike?
Dear Contract Anon,
It's fairly correct.
Let's unpack:
Tumblr media
This is the general rule set by SAG-AFTRA: S must not participate in conventions, fan meet and greets, etc., that promote OL. Exception: conventions and meet and greets that have been contracted prior to the beginning of the strike and under the (suspensive) condition that no reference to the project is being made.
Same goes for fandom events, if these events are independent:
Tumblr media
What are independent events, you might ask:
Tumblr media
The Sasnak City event in Missouri is such an event: it is a grassroots initiative, managed by fans, for which he gets a fee or percentage. Also, here is your answer on the New York Comic Con, @mariaae: if the strike continues, doubtful you'll see him there. Sorry - guidelines are drastic.
And this is how we can already speculate on what happened in Missouri:
Tumblr media
First of all, it's all scripted (hello?). More than ever, prior consultation on which questions are to be addressed is mandatory: the "should speak with the event organizer" must not be construed as a recommendation, but as an enforced obligation. So you can already comfortably assume they kept it fairly close to the guidelines and probably talked about 'your process, why you wanted to be an actor, what you like/dislike about working in the industry", etc. I bet for S it was not very difficult: Waypoints and such. Probably it's exactly why the mommies attending got all the feels.
Last, but not least, a very good point for self-avowed people pleaser S:
Tumblr media
Read this carefully, Anon: "it is up to your discretion and what you are comfortable answering". That means: deflect, deflect, deflect. And smile, smile, smile!
So, unless S is a simpleton (he is not) or suicidal (come on!), chances he did not respect these simple rules are, in my educated opinion, a fat 0.
I would also call your kind attention on the event's poster:
Tumblr media
No OL reference. No JAMMF. No STARZ. All of these were verboten.
Also, on sanctions. Given the almost complete lack of strike-related recent history, I am unable to tell you, at this point in time: a) what kind of sanctions would SAG-AFTRA think of, in the event of a breach of these rules, and b) what procedure would they follow in order to determine if rules have indeed been broken.
My money is on a membership withdrawal.
The way you formulated your question places you in Mordor. You sound almost sorry no rules were broken and it is my strong belief, unless proven otherwise, they weren't.
You disparage us every single day, but still come here for our expertise?
Sweet Lord. You are an impressive bunch of twats. I have no problem writing it openly.

Chapter 3: New News
Damian was heading to Dick’s house to have what he called a celebration, but what seemed to really be a ‘I hope the media takes the news well’ support group. Most of the people that worked in the offices were going to be there so Damian really had no choice but to come.
The costume consult went pretty much as expected and like many of his other ones he’s done in the past. The superhero costume itself was slightly uncomfortable yet manageable and defined his physique. His only complaint was that it was the colors of a traffic light, a little more red and black heavy but yellow and green definitely made their appearances. The costumer, Rita Parr, who had a 1950s vibe told him it’s to reflect his background of being from a circus. Damian snorted, the fact that Dick used his own backstory to fuel this character was still very funny to him, especially when others don’t know it and think it's so absurdly original.
The craziest thing about this movie was that Dick was not only directing it, but he is the primary writer too. He didn’t want to come across as too bold and open his sure to be box office smash to criticism because an actor turned director could also write a script well. So he put it under a pseudonym. Damian was quite surprised when he found out, the script was well written, the characters all seemed grounded, and it was more than just an action movie. Dick had found a way to work a compelling romance amongst his characters too. That is why Damian would have begged his brother to be in the movie, of course he didn’t have to, Dick was all too eager to have Damian be a part of it, but Damian would have begged if it came to that.
When Damian’s town car pulled up to Dick’s small mansion, he could already see the cars of about seven others, and by some of the specific vehicles he knew that the majority of the production team leaders were here. And sure enough when Alfred, his family’s butler that Bruce requested help host Dick’s gathering, opened the door, he could already hear some of their voices.
“Welcome Master Damian. Wonderful that you could make it this evening.” The gentle older man stepped to the side, gesturing for Damian to enter.
“Good evening Alfred. I’m afraid I wasn’t allowed to RSVP no to this event.’
“Well, nevertheless, I have brought your favorite bourbon to help you settle in better. Master Grayson is in the theatre room with some of the others. He requested I direct you there upon your arrival.” Alfred walked along beside him.
“Great, already jumping into work talk. I’ll take a double of that bourbon when you get the chance.” Damian shrugged off his coat and put it in the coat closet, politely denying Alfred’s assistance.
Approaching the theatre room, he could already hear the familiar voices of a good chunk of the production team:
Wally West ( Director's Assistant)
Barbara Gordon (Secretary/PA)
Zatanna Zatara (Producer)
Clark Kent (Cinematographer)
Garth Bernstein (Casting Director)
Victor Stone (Sound Designer)
Rex Mason (Production Designer)
Along with Jason Todd, Slade Wilson was also present. Slade Wilson was cast to play the villain and arch nemesis to Robin, Deathstroke. Damian wasn’t a huge fan of the older man, throughout his long tenure of acting he was known to be vindictive, manipulative, and only watch out for himself. He ran his own talent agency poaching other managers of their clients to fill his arsenal. It worked, however, his name and his wealth always convinced the young and naive actors and actresses to buck over to his team. So before him, he had an army of good talent that made him richer and made membership under his agency ridiculously pricey. As for the actors and actresses, Slade saved the best roles for himself and his favorites, so every audition season was cutthroat and everyone sucked up to Slade to gain his favor and potentially better roles. Damian was disgusted by it and was appalled that Dick would include him in his project, but Dick argued that the new movie needed a genius villain and Slade was the best to play the evil man.
He had to agree with his brother, while Slade was unquestionably a terrible man in real life, he elegantly portrayed one even better on the big screen. Once he aged out of the roguish antihero type leading man, he began getting typecast as the man pulling the strings or the mob boss. Slade loved it because people loved his bad guys and he won a multitude of awards for them. It killed Damian to say it, but he was a perfect choice for the role.
Damian took a deep breath and opened the double doors to the large projector screen with luxurious plush red velvet reclining chairs creating three rows facing the front. The various men and women standing or sitting around the room, each with a drink in their hand. They turned their heads to see who the newcomer was. Dick came bouncing toward him while the others raised their glass in acknowledgement, waved, or called out a greeting.
“Hey Dami! I’m so glad you could make it!” Dick embraced him, but really just hugged around Damian’s hanging arms.
“I had no choice in the matter and you know it, now get off.” Damian resisted.
“Well I’m still glad you listened to my threats.” Dick laughed and guided him inside. “We were just going through the final candidates audition tapes, I’ve decided we’re going to decide tonight as a team!”
“We’re casting everyone tonight?” He looked at the screen to find it paused on someone’s audition. An average height, lanky male with blonde hair and green eyes, no doubt someone auditioning for Changeling.
“No, not everyone, but the main team. Well those we haven’t cast yet! We already signed Kori as Starfire, and yesterday we finalized Connor Kent as Super Boy!” Dick practically cheered.
Damian rolled his eyes at the last casting announcement. “Clark’s brother? And I’m the one that gets called out for nepotism.” He crossed his arms.
Clark snorted, “You know I really thought you guys would have been the best of friends back then. Bruce was right though.” He chuckled again, few of the others joining in as well.
“He really does play cocky and arrogant well though, and you can’t play both roles!” Zatanna called out, making the rest burst into laughter.
“Ha ha. You all know he is a diva. Not everyone that fits the description of the character everyday of their real life should be the actual character. We’re actors because we can be things we’re not, not because we can portray ourselves on screen too, that's why we have reality TV trash.”
“Yeah that’s why we cast you as Robin, a leader, noble, maybe a little romantic, hero. You sure aren’t any of that in real life.” Garth hollered, Jason cackled with him. Damian’s eyes narrowed at the pair.
“Oh, but that’s why he’s an actor, because he can sure as hell act like a badass but isn’t one!” Jason added, their laughing continued. Damian dared a glance around the room, seeing Clark trying to hide his enjoyment, Rex’s smile and the way he nudged Zatanna as if they all agreed. Slade was sitting a glass of whiskey in one hand and a smirk on his face. Once his eyes landed on Barbara and Dick who also got caught giggling, he felt his anger start to rise.
“Your own words are biting you in the ass, Wayne.” Barbara snorted, emphasizing the use of his last name and punctuating the snarky comment with a sip from her glass of wine.
“Laugh all you want, you know I’m right. Now can we please just get on with it so I can go home?” He snapped.
Dick, still chuckling, clapped him on the back. “Sure thing. We actually started a bit early and just voted on our Mark Beast A.K.A Changeling! His name in Garfield Logan-”
“The guy from Space Trek?” Damian scoffed.
“The very one! He has a great following and a pretty solid comedic timing. His fans adore him and he’s already got green eyes! The rest will be easy! Plus he is already trained in gymnastics and does parkour, so stunts should be a little easier and perhaps more practical!” Garth chimed in.
“See, watch!” Dick pressed play and the screen brightened to life, displaying Garfield’s audition, followed by some footage of him at a training facility doing parkour and gymnastic routines. In Damian’s opinion, he wasn’t a poor choice, but he was still skeptical.
The group resettled into their chairs and watched clip after clip of auditions, until they narrowed it down and finally selected someone for the remaining roles. After Garfield Logan, they agreed upon Jaime Reyes to play Dan Garret A.K.A Blue Beetle and Donna Troy to portray Wondergirl, or Cassie Sandsmark. Alfred had arranged some catering to come in and supply them with a delicious meal as they were already a few hours deep into deliberation.
It was finally time to face the choice Damian dreaded the most. Who will play the Sorceress? He hadn’t stopped thinking about how important it was that she get along with him and be a good actress herself. The role was the second largest in the movie and could cost them dearly if they choose incorrectly. That and the fact that the office didn’t stop discussing this one girl’s audition for two full days, luckily it died down after that but Damian didn’t want Jason’s new plaything to be involved at all and certainly didn’t want her too close to himself.
Garth, the casting director, had narrowed their choices down to three different women that had been the best of the bunch. The first audition wasn’t memorable, the girl had played it safe, and while it was still very well done, it was missing that certain something.
Damian recognized the second woman instantly, and all he could think of was how horribly wrong the choice would be. Terra Markov, or better known as Slade Wilson’s lapdog. She was his pet, and she also got any audition she could dream of. No doubt Garth was bribed or in some way coerced to give her a shot, because her look did not scream sorceress at all. To give credit where credit is due, she was a decent actress, she just had a temper and her questionable ties with Slade didn’t sit right with him. They still watched her performance and the crowd seemed rather pleased.
“I really like how she delivered that line!”
“Her blue eyes are so pretty!”
“Imagine if we just dyed her hair or used a wig, I think we have a winner!”
Damian looked to Slade who was sitting there with a smug grin on his face. “She is quite talented isn’t she.”
“She’s great, but we’ve got one more. So let’s not make any decisions quite yet.” Dick answered.
“What? You don’t think she is fit for the role?” Slade pushed back.
“No, no. She did very well, I’m just saying we have one left and we should watch it first. Terra is a strong actress, no question why you signed her under your agency.”
“Mr. Grayson, it’d be most efficient to just call it here, everyone approves of her.” A general nodding of heads and agreements filled the room following Slade’s words.
“True, or we can suck up watching five more goddamn minutes like the fucking director wants, and see all the possibilities. Or is it past your bedtime grandpa?” Jason barked.
“You listen here-” Slade was cut off.
Damian had marched over to Dick’s spot in the theatre and snatched the remote out of his hand, he walked back to his place towards the back of the room and away from everyone else and pressed play on the last audition tape.
The slam of the door and the energy that filled the screen silenced everyone. However, no one was more stunned than Damian, who had just realized that the very woman auditioning was the same from the lobby. It was made evident by the large brown coffee stain he caused on her blouse.
Damian watched the audition speechless. This couldn’t possibly be the one everyone was talking about. To his dismay, he had to admit that he was captivated. He knew that she had been late which explained the sudden start to the tape and lack of a slate, but despite what he caused, it seemed to fuel her annoyance of being disturbed by the alarm. She had added some lines and improvised her movements, Damian knew because he practically had the whole damn script memorized.
He almost laughed when she forced a poor assistant to become her scene partner, the shuffle of papers being thrown at the young man caused a few giggles from the small viewing audience. His eyes widened when she pulled her shirt off and he quickly berated himself for appreciating the fullness of her breasts and how prettily they were wrapped in her beige lace bra. While the woman on the screen addressed her apparel, Damian ‘respectfully’ averted his gaze and was curious to see what the others were thinking.
Barbara and Victor were smirking, seemingly appreciating the woman’s strong presence and how she kept going even though the brainless men were stuck on her wardrobe malfunction. Victor and Dick shared a look that confirmed that whatever they were thinking, that they were on the same page. Once the girl appeared back on screen wearing Jason’s signature jacket, the owner proudly grinned and nudged Garth in the chair beside him whose eyes seemed to be glued a little too much on her body. Rex and Clark were happily enjoying the audition and had even put down their food and snacks, fully entranced. What caught Damian’s eye the most was that Slade has shifted his posture, going from neatly relaxed with one ankle resting on the opposite knee, to leaning forward, fingers laced under his chin and elbows planted on his knees merely observing.
Damian’s focus shifted back to the screen, watching her move about so confidently before sitting in a lotus position and chanting lowly.
“Azerath, Metrion, Zinthos.”
Then Dick called cut and jumped in the scene beside her before the tape was stopped seconds later. A few seconds of silence and processing followed before everyone excitedly looked around and began discussing what they had just seen.
“It’s got to be her!”
“Her eyes are so unique!”
“She improvised all that? That’s incredible!”
But all Damian could think about was the war in his head. There was no denying that she was clearly the best, but he knew he already screwed up with her and was certain she hated his guts. He wasn’t sure if they would be able to work together.
“Okay, so that was the fantastic Raven Roth! She is a phenomenal actress whom you might have seen on Skulls as the forensic scientist.”
“I think it has to be her. Even her look is spot on, she is mysterious and cool.” Barbara said.
“I don’t know…didn’t it seem kind of amateurish to just storm in there. That would not fly on set!” Zatana chirped.
“She wouldn’t do that on set, some jerk spilled coffee on her which made her late! I completely sympathize for the poor girl, and to give us a performance this strong? Incredible! Trust me, I’ve seen a lot of auditions over the years.” Damian’s cheeks started to burn at Garth’s words, unknowingly calling him out.
“I for one agree with Mr. Bernstein, here.” The mumbles around the room silenced at Slade’s approval, he never sided with anyone that wasn’t his own talent.
“You do? But isn’t Terra your client?” Dick asked outright, sparing any tiptoeing around the subject.
“Yes, I am not blind and I know when to fold if my hand is not strong enough. Terra cannot out-perform this girl, at least in a role like this. This girl doesn’t seek attention, she demands it with her screen presence, it’s powerful, impactful. Terra’s performance was surface level, good, but inadequate. I’ll coach her about this later. But nevermind that. Miss Roth would be an excellent addition to the cast, as well as my agency. Does anyone know if she’s being represented?” Slade asked the room, Damian noticing a certain look in his eye that he couldn’t quite name.
“Alrighty then.” Dick looked around the room, everyone nodding in agreement to the unspoken question.
Damian felt a weight in his stomach. No way they all almost unanimously chose the vile woman from the coffee shop. Sure she had done well, but they couldn’t see past that? They’d soon find out her temper and Damian would enjoy watching them regret their decision. But still… he’d have to go to work everyday and look at her stupidly, definitely not in any way attractive, face and convince her to like him. It wasn’t fair. Maybe he should speak up? But to speak up would be to reveal himself as the ‘asshole’ and he couldn’t have that. They’d just side with Raven, and he wouldn’t even be able to explain himself. He had to get out of there, he couldn’t risk anyone realizing that he hadn’t given his usually very vocal opinion. Quietly, he snuck out the door just as Dick was finishing his statement.
“It looks like Raven Roth is our Sorceress!”
He could hear the applause from the hallway but he didn’t look back, he proceeded to the kitchen to grab some water and hide. Feeling the cold water slide down his throat, cooling the anger and frustration within him slightly, Damian took a very needed deep breath. Just then, the last person he wanted to see found him.
“Damian, why’d you leave? We just broke out the champagne to celebrate the completed casting!” Dick held his flute of champagne out, swirling the contents as if to entice him.
“I don’t care for champagne.”
“Suit yourself.” he shrugged and took a large sip. After pulling the glace down from his lips, he leaned his hip against the kitchen island and stared directly into Damian’s eyes. “Don’t think I didn’t notice that you didn’t speak up in there.”
“I had nothing to say.” Damian tried to sound nonchalant.
“If there’s one thing I know about you Damian, it’s that you always have something to say, especially when it directly affects you.”
Dick was good, he always knew when something was up, and usually Damian reluctantly found it endearing but right now it was definitely not the time. “It’s not like I have a choice in the matter. You all seemed very pleased with her so there is no point in voicing my opinion for it to be met with criticism.” He shrugged.
“Criticism huh? So you didn’t like her?”
Damian opened his mouth to protest but once again, Dick had caught him. Pinching the bridge of his nose, he figured he might as well get the interrogation over with. “I had the displeasure of meeting Miss Roth sometime before her audition. She was inconsiderate and rude and I don’t think we need that kind of behavior on set. Oh and she’s Todd’s new plaything which also poses a problem.”
“Oh, I had no idea. She certainly seemed nice and courteous enough when we talked to her. But I suppose she could be putting on an act for her benefit and given that she wouldn’t know that you were already cast she'd have no reason to give you better treatment. I was also under the impression that Jason and Raven had never met prior to her audition.” He rubbed his chin in thought, “I will take this into consideration as we onboard her. I don’t want to react harshly without further investigation. As it stands, she will continue to be our Sorceress with Terra Markov as a potential backup if Raven falls through.”
Damian crossed his arms, frowning slightly. “I don’t think this will end well for me…I mean us.”
“Everything will be fine. I’ll look into it and adjust whatever needs adjusting. I’ll tell Jay to back off and we’ll make sure she’s not a diva. I appreciate you telling me and not brooding to yourself about this like Bruce.
“Yeah, whatever.” He relaxed slightly, dropping his arms in surrender. “I’m going to go back to my place.”
“You don’t want to stay for the rest of the party? We were gonna watch some of the segments announcing your casting!”
Just then the sound of shattering glass echoed in from the entryway. Dick winced and looked back to Damian who barely reacted..
“Absolutely not. I can watch them on my own time”
“Fair enough, thanks for coming anyway! I’ll see you soon!”
“I still had no choice.” Damian called over his shoulder as he headed out the kitchen and toward the entrance. He bid Alfred farewell and departed back to his condo.
Finally settled into the peace and quiet his own space brought him, he started searching for the articles about himself. Most of the articles had received and reported the news positively, stating that the casting choice was a no-brainer and how excited they were to see the cast built around him. A few wireless welcoming but they came from more unpopular sites, and some outlets hadn’t reported anything yet. But the information was still new so it will keep trickling down through the circuit until everyone has given their mostly unsolicited insight.
The one thing that still popped up everytime his name hit the headlines though started popping up right in front of his eyes. It never failed to make him feel less than and unworthy.

The 10 companies facing a possible strike are: Activision Productions Inc., Blindlight LLC, Disney Character Voices Inc., Electronic Arts Productions Inc., Epic Games, Inc., Formosa Interactive LLC, Insomniac Games Inc., Take 2 Productions Inc., VoiceWorks Productions Inc., and WB Games Inc. “Work under the video game contract “includes a great deal of ‘performance capture,’ where trained professionals, many of whom are stunt performers, provide digitally captured performances used to give expressive movement to video game characters,” the guild said. “Unregulated use of AI poses an enormous threat to these artists’ professions.” The union is fighting for protective language in the contract that will require informed consent and appropriate payment for the creation and use of digital replicas and for training AI systems with our members’ performances.”
Unavoidable when I'm sure studios would love to pay minimal reuse fees via AI. VO's not gonna be a viable job in about a minute.
Spent last night with a crew of AI devs. The c-suite went on about how soon all film and TV scripts will be written by AI to appease the bottom line. He asked if I've seen Barbenheimer, I said no, "I just signed up for Criterion Channel and stopped watching all new streaming shows and movies."
He got stuck and didn't have a response for somebody making it a point to consume legacy human entertainment, presented in curated collections managed by humans.
The immediate future is bleak in a way I don't think anybody is really prepared for.

Separation of Church & Fate
This year apparently has been about learning self-validation.
I started school this year, and turns out - I’m not dumb and i’m really good at time management, unlike what i was telling myself.
I was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD (combined type) at the very start of the year, and it turns out those are fuckin REAL and so are the issues they bring to my life. I’m not just a lazy asshole, like i was telling myself.
It’s also been about recognizing old patterns and navigating the essential inner growth.
Why do i feel these things about myself? Why is my self-confidence destroyed this year? I KNOW i’m not bad, or dumb, or manipulative, and that i am always putting effort into growth within relationships and myself. I like to ask questions because i’m genuinely curious and i want to know what people think and i like to solve problems in ways that benefit everyone.
So where am i getting this negative self feed-back loop? And why was it missing for a few years but suddenly has come back full-strength?
Turns out that the negative thought patterns i allowed to creep in are not actually my sentiments at all. They’re the reflections of very difficult years in harsh environments built up over time, strengthened by the perceived notions of people who have no fucking clue what’s actually going on. My inner awful dialogue wasn’t something i struggled with as a kid, until the church came along. This would be partially a product of simply being a child, but also being an AUTISTIC child. Most children are who they are, they like who they are, and they don’t realize that there’s anything wrong with them until someone doesn’t like them or misunderstands them. Essentially, all children are taught to be self-conscious and learn that they are ‘weird’ or ‘bad’ or ‘dumb” from social peers and triggered adults and the cycle starts there.
This is true tenfold for autistic children.
Up until the point I was introduced into a society that isn’t built to include me, i had no frame of reference to believe that i was any better or worse than anyone else. I was ME. I liked being me, until i encountered a religious environment that told me i must acknowledge that i’m a bad person in order to participate and get any social ‘perks’ with my club membership (my father also told me i was 'stupid', an 'idiot', and 'dumb' on a daily basis but that's a story for another time).
This seemed arbitrary. Listening to someone preach love and forgiveness every Sunday while also casting hellish aspersions on non-club members, sanctioning domestic abuse and violence, subjugating their female members, and publicly flogging and banishing members who didn’t adhere to the exact script - none of it made sense. It sure seemed everyone was getting away with something, but because they’d stamped God’s name on it, it wasn’t hypocritical.
My blood would boil, my blood pressure would rise, and I would daydream about stabbing myself in the neck with my pen, listening to these men preach on and on and on. Which didn’t seem constructive or conducive to personal growth. I wanted to get rid of that part of me that spent the mornings in the pew viscerally angry. Because, as i was being told, the problem was ME.
I started asking genuine questions because i was confused how such GOOD people could be so hypocritical and lack so much self-awareness. Why would these men tell my mom she had to stay with a man who pushed her down stairs and beat her children and why would they say God wants it? Why would they take it upon themselves to discipline grown adults like they were children and treat children like livestock to “train”. Why would there be a spiritual entity that wants any of this?
These aren’t ground-breaking questions that should shake the very foundations of a sturdy, well-built religious faith that’s predicated on genuine love and forgiveness. If we were truly involved in the spiritual practice this cult claimed we were, there would be inclusiveness. Kindness.
Support.
Grey areas.
Honest and difficult conversations.
The ability to share your experiences and have them be received with curiosity and understanding.
There would be space for mistakes, apologies, and proper conflict resolution.
Turns out, this was too ideal and not the environment in which i found myself. I quickly learned that asking tough questions and trying to have a dialogue relegated me to the status of “questionable” and “dangerous” - even if I took accountability and apologized. I didn’t understand that.
Years later, i realized i’d already been marked as dangerous by this community when i was 8. And while it sounds too self-victimizing to be true - it was simply because I shared some info and asked a question.
My father’s anger was ramping up. He had started taking it out on my mom in physical abuse form, and if i stepped in, it was my turn. Being a problem solver, i figured sharing this info with some older girls at the church might yield positive results. Perhaps their dad could say something to mine. What actually happened was difficult to process.
The girls went to their mother, who went to my mother. I was pulled aside and reprimanded by this other woman for sharing personal family info and instructed never to do it again. She had dragged my mother over with her and lectured both of us on…something - probably encouraging us to get our feminine tongues under control. Years later, this woman’s husband would recommend that my beaten mother skip the divorce she so badly needed on the premise that God likes faithful and submissive wives. But that's another story.
So this is where I learned that my naturally questioning and problem-spotting brain was THE problem. If you see something suspicious, you will get swatted. If you ask questions, you will be banished. If you speak up for yourself, you will be punished. It doesn’t matter how obvious the problem is, how kindly you try to say it - it doesn’t matter if you’re not contributing to the dialogue in a way that sweeps things under the rug and bolsters the bullshit.
I had assumed this was only an issue within church structure. Once i left, the pattern seemed to resolve itself. A non-religious social hierarchy built on the same non-friction and passive double-standard principles didn’t seem like it should exist.
Unfortunately, au contraire.
This year was about learning that people everywhere feel attacked when you suggest something in the social structure is off and try to have a dialogue about it. In a less aggressive sense, this situation mimicked the one from my childhood - misrepresentation, misunderstanding, an entire group of people telling me i was wrong and insecure, and several others clinging to the idea that i tried to control their lives.
(lol - why are they pretending i have that much power)
The difference this time was that i'm now an adult. I have endless experience being treated this way for asking questions.
i also now know that people - esp women - on the spectrum are treated socially poorly bc they're easy targets due to our trusting nature and our communication disability and inability to understand or be passive aggressive. So we are labeled confrontational and aggressive. Dramatic and rude. This time around, I can observe it from a more secure vantage point. i don't have to let it rule my life or destroy my self-confidence. Or convince me that my intentions are bad or my perspective invalid. I can simply remove this dynamic from my life altogether. I can stand up and leave that pew behind.
Tumblr media
What surprised me wasn't that i was encountering these accusations of being dangerous again. What surprised me was that it was a social structure of people in their 30s, who should know better. What surprised me was that the church structure i'd worked so hard to leave behind exists alive and well, but on a social level.
Certain social groups it turns out, can  also be built on rules and certain ways of doing things. None of this is the more ‘correct’ way, it’s just become whatever is easy and more acceptable by a majority. There’s even a game element to it - and as long as you play by the rules and don’t upset anyone - even if their behavior has negatively impacted you - you have a club membership! Don’t rock the boat! Please be sensitive to others but the minute you ask them to be sensitive of you, it could end poorly for you and only you! If you have a mental breakdown because of years of hiding an unknown disability, you will be accused of trying to take advantage of someone financially! You're not a partner! You suck! This social construct hates consequences, but we definitely have some for YOU!
Tumblr media
This provides a nice set-up for people that lack self-awareness or good intentions - or have yet to sort through their negative patterns of behavior. People who aren’t BAD per se, but also aren’t trying to grow or take accountability. Charismatic people who charm the pants off friends but gaslight and stonewall their partner behind closed doors. People who haven’t learned conflict resolution. People who don’t understand boundaries. People who are blind to the fact that most of society functions around using your friends to get the attention and validation you want rather than learning to get it from yourself. And these don’t make them bad people. No one is perfect, and we all have blind spots and struggles.
The distinction lies in whether or not they’re willing to accept responsibility and pay attention when someone shares negative feedback or says “hey…i think we have a problem.”  The only bad person is someone who makes a mistake and does not apologize or learn from it, but chooses defensiveness and projection instead (at the end of the day, that will affect THEM negatively the most). No one likes to hear they’re wrong or fucking it up, but it’s a necessary part of being a human if we want to grow and improve. It’s a personal pattern to break. Humans are here to communicate and help each other.
Reliving an experience adjacent to my church upbringing as an adult has been eye-opening.  This year, i realized this is where my personal responsibility to breaking this pattern as an Autistic person comes in. Because of the autism, I will be dealing with this in some form for the rest of my life. The pattern contains many things - my participation, my willingness to trust that most people have good intentions and want to be better and will listen when someone speaks up, my effort to fit in with everyone else, my desire for connection. In certain environments, these expectations will be true. Recreating my experience as a child of witnessing fishy behavior, boundaries being crossed, and trying to step in for someone that was not my responsibility was my fault. I willingly chose to do this. That's my shit to work through.
And while it is not up to me to accept the blame for how people respond or their behavior, my responsibility, in order to avoid putting myself in these witch-hunt situations, is to learn how to recognize in which environments asking questions and solving problems is accepted, and to pursue relationships within those. Because, based on how my brain works and my communication style, no matter how much responsibility I take for my side of the street, other people will find some sort of problem with how I am.
However, I can complain about how i’m being treated for speaking up for myself all i want, but if i truly want growth and a healthy environment, i’ll stop choosing social spaces that label me as insecure and controlling, and i’ll stop choosing people who play the victim and misrepresent me and gossip.
If i am in a place where i cannot open dialogues with people and learn and grow with them, then i must seize the opportunity to trust myself, my intuition, and my emotions. Time to practice the self-validation that i have struggled so much with over the years and learn the warning signs of this particular pattern, so that i don't have to play this game again. i can validate my own experiences. I can seek environments where deconstruction of social norms is encouraged, and where my question-asking brain isn't THE problem.
Because if all it takes is one person challenging the "way it's always been" to topple a social or religious structure and wreak havoc, then what was that foundation built on? Certainly something that was already false and unsustainable to begin with. If the structure of whatever i'm questioning is truly sound, it shouldn't result in defensiveness and fear and gossip. It should add to foundations and be embraced as another unique nail that holds it up.
In a sense, I'm grateful to be confronted with this strange dynamic again. These experiences teach me how NOT to be. I don't want to live my life unable to take responsibility and unable to embrace different points of view. That's where we lose growth and accountability and stay the same. That's how we are adults with a child's conflict resolution skills. That's how we tell ourselves that our point of view is THE one and we harm and ignore the others.
Be respectful. Speak up for yourself. Ask questions. Point out problems. And if people don't like it, that's their problem.

Supercharge Your Lead Generation with the S.O.L.D System Video Marketing Program
Tumblr media
I recently enrolled in the S.O.L.D System Video Marketing Lead-Gen Accelerator Program Digital membership area, and I'm thrilled to share my experience. As a business owner constantly seeking new ways to attract customers, I was drawn to the program's focus on leveraging video marketing for lead generation.
Unpacking the S.O.L.D. System:
The program lives up to its name – S.O.L.D. stands for Strategic Organic Leads on Demand. This immediately resonated with me, as organic leads are highly valuable and sustainable for long-term growth. The curriculum dives deep into the power of video content and provides a clear roadmap for creating videos that not only resonate with your audience but also convert them into leads.
From Script to Screen: A Step-by-Step Guide
The S.O.L.D System membership area is a treasure trove of valuable resources. It walks you through the entire video creation process, from brainstorming captivating video ideas to scripting, filming, and editing. I particularly appreciated the easy-to-follow modules that break down each stage into manageable steps.
No Video Editing Experience? No Problem!
One of my biggest concerns was the technical aspect of video creation. Thankfully, the program addresses this head-on. It offers practical tips for filming high-quality videos even with basic equipment, and there are even sections dedicated to popular editing platforms. What's more, the membership provides access to a wealth of templates and resources that can streamline the editing process significantly.
Beyond Creation: Distribution and Optimization
The program doesn't stop at video creation. It delves into the crucial aspects of video distribution and optimization. You'll learn effective strategies for promoting your videos across different platforms, including social media and YouTube. Additionally, the program sheds light on video SEO techniques to ensure your videos rank higher in search results, maximizing their reach and lead generation potential.
Results Speak Louder Than Words
Since implementing the strategies from the S.O.L.D System program, I've witnessed a noticeable uptick in website traffic and lead generation. My audience engagement with video content has also grown significantly. The program has empowered me to create compelling videos that not only showcase my brand but also effectively convert viewers into potential customers.
Bonus: A Supportive Community
Another fantastic aspect of the S.O.L.D System membership area is the access to a supportive online community. This platform allows you to connect with other program participants and industry professionals. It's a valuable space to share experiences, ask questions, and gain additional insights into video marketing strategies.
Tumblr media
Overall, the S.O.L.D System Video Marketing Lead-Gen Accelerator Program Digital membership area is an exceptional resource for businesses looking to leverage the power of video marketing for lead generation. It provides a comprehensive framework, actionable strategies, and a supportive community, making it an excellent investment for anyone serious about growing their business.

Quote of the Week
In [other languages], I could end up chasing silly bugs and waste time debugging and tracing to find that I made a typo or ran into a language quirk that gave me an unexpected nil pointer. That situation is almost non-existent in Rust, it's just me and the problem. Rust is honest and upfront about its quirks and will yell at you about it before you have a hard to find bug in production.

Lists, Tuples, Sets, and Dictionaries in Python
Tumblr media
Understanding lists, tuples, sets, and dictionaries in Python is crucial for anyone learning data structures in Python programming. These built-in collection types offer powerful ways to store, access, and manipulate data efficiently. Lists in Python are used for ordered and mutable sequences, while tuples provide an immutable alternative. Sets help manage unique data and perform operations like union and intersection, making them ideal for membership testing. Dictionaries are perfect for key-value pair storage, widely used in data science, machine learning, and web development. What Are the Best Beginner-Friendly Tools to Make $10K a Month Online? Here’s the Inside Scoop
Let’s be honest—$10,000 a month online sounds like a dream, right? But the wild thing is... it’s actually doable. Not just for tech wizards or marketing pros, but for regular people with Wi-Fi, some hustle, and the right tools.
Tumblr media
Whether you're looking to ditch your 9-to-5, create multiple streams of income, or just want some extra cash flowing in, you’ve probably been down the YouTube rabbit hole of “make money online” videos. Some are great. Most are hype.
So here’s a no-fluff, beginner-friendly guide with 10 proven tools and platforms that actually work. If you’re serious about building an income online—especially if you’re aiming for that five-figure monthly milestone—bookmark this.
These platforms cover affiliate marketing, freelancing, digital products, content creation, and automation. And no, you don’t need to be an expert to start.
1. Systeme.io – Your All-in-One Marketing Tool
If you’re looking to sell digital products, run a course, or build an email list without blowing your budget—Systeme.io is a lifesaver. It’s like ClickFunnels, Kajabi, Mailchimp, and Teachable rolled into one—but way cheaper and beginner-friendly.
You can build funnels, send automated emails, create online courses, and even run affiliate programs—all in one place.
Why it helps: Automation = passive income. Once your funnel is live, it works while you sleep.
2. Canva – Design That Sells
Whether you’re launching a brand, running an Etsy store, or promoting your services, how things look really matters. Canva lets you design graphics, ebooks, thumbnails, printables, and even short videos with zero design skills.
Here’s the trick: Combine Canva with a side hustle like selling digital planners or social media templates on Etsy or Gumroad.
Tip: Use trending templates and bundle products for higher sales.
3. Ko-fi – Get Paid for Your Creativity
If you’re a writer, artist, podcaster, or YouTuber, Ko-fi is a powerful (and underrated) platform. It lets your audience “tip” you or pay for digital downloads, memberships, and services.
No middlemen. No big fees. Just your work and your supporters.
Best part? No monthly subscription fee, unlike Patreon.
4. Gumroad – Sell Anything Digital
From ebooks to stock photos to Notion templates, Gumroad makes it super simple to sell digital products. You don’t even need a website.
Upload your product, set a price, and start sharing the link.
Real Talk: People are making bank selling things like resume templates, AI prompts, printable journals, and even simple courses. Start with what you know—package it smartly, and market it.
5. Fiverr – Freelancing Without Begging for Work
Think Fiverr is just for $5 gigs? Not anymore.
Today, people are charging hundreds (even thousands) for services like voiceovers, SEO audits, email marketing, and AI-powered content creation.
Beginner tip: Start with a basic gig at a competitive price, get reviews, and scale from there. Niching down helps. For example, instead of “video editing,” try “YouTube Shorts editing for finance channels.”
6. ChatGPT + Notion – The Productivity Power Combo
Use ChatGPT to generate content ideas, scripts, blogs, or emails in seconds. Combine it with Notion to organize your business like a pro—plan your content calendar, manage clients, track finances.
How it helps: You get things done faster, meaning more time to scale and grow.
Bonus idea: Create and sell Notion templates tailored for niche audiences (freelancers, students, coaches, etc.).
7. Medium Partner Program – Get Paid to Write
Got a story to tell or knowledge to share? Medium’s Partner Program pays you based on how long people read your articles.
It takes time to build traction, but if you’re consistent and use trending topics (think AI, productivity, side hustles), you’ll start seeing those payouts.
Pro Tip: Repurpose your Medium posts into newsletters or ebooks down the line.
8. Pinterest + Tailwind – Free Traffic Hack
Pinterest is a goldmine for driving free traffic to blogs, YouTube channels, ecommerce products, and affiliate offers. It’s a visual search engine, not a social media platform.
Tailwind automates posting and helps you schedule pins smartly for max reach.
Use case: Post pins linking to your Gumroad store or affiliate blog and let the traffic roll in.
9. Affiliate Networks (Impact, ShareASale, Digistore24)
You don’t need a product to make money—you can promote other people’s. That’s the whole point of affiliate marketing.
Impact.com, ShareASale, and Digistore24 offer thousands of high-paying affiliate products in every niche imaginable.
Strategy: Create niche blogs, YouTube videos, or TikToks reviewing or using the product. Use SEO and smart linking to drive commissions.
10. Podia – Sell Courses, Coaching, or Webinars
If you have a teachable skill, turn it into a course or coaching program. Podia lets you create and sell with ease. No tech headaches. No hefty fees.
You can also offer freebies to build your email list, host webinars, and manage customer communication—all in one spot.
Niche ideas that work well: AI tools tutorials, Canva for beginners, passive income guides, productivity coaching.
But Wait—Can You Really Make $10K a Month With These?
Short answer: Yes, but not overnight.
Long answer: These tools are enablers. They give you the structure, platform, and automation to earn—but you still need to put in the work.
Most people start by earning $500–$1,000/month consistently. Once that system is solid, scaling to $5K–$10K becomes way easier with smart content creation, automation, and a bit of paid ads (if needed).
Quick Math Example:
Sell a $20 ebook = need 500 sales/month
Offer $500 coaching = just 20 clients/month
Affiliate commission of $100 = just 100 sales/month
Spread that across platforms and traffic channels? Totally doable.
Final Tips to Make It Work
Pick 1 or 2 tools and go deep – Don’t try everything at once.
Choose a niche you care about – It keeps you going when results are slow.
Repurpose everything – Turn one blog into a Medium post, email, tweet, and reel.
Focus on traffic sources – SEO, Pinterest, YouTube, and email are long-term gold.
Keep learning – Trends change fast. Stay sharp, stay consistent.
