All that glitters isn't always gold...
..sometimes it's just gold lame. Or Lurex. Or Mylar.
OK - so what the heck is lame? (pronounced 'lah-MAY') It was traditionally fabric made from metal fibers wrapped around other fibers, like silk or rayon. It was designed to create a metallic shine to clothing, so clothes were typically gold, silver, or copper colored. Besides style, lame was used in fencing uniforms which allowed the electrified sabers to register a 'hit' against an opponent.
Lurex is a close cousin to lame. In fact, you could claim they're in the same household since Lurex vaporized metal onto other fibers.
Today most manufacturers use Mylar, a polyester film that creates a metallic look, like with the one piece bathing suit I'm wearing. The trouble with Mylar is, after a while, it starts to peel off the backing fabric. Which makes clothing unappealing.
But, on the good side of things, a mylar swimsuit like this one is just fine for passing through airport metal detectors.

3,600-Year-Old Jewelry and Weapon Hoard Found Under Field in Czech Republic
Archaeologists used metal detectors to find the hoard, which includes several pieces of jewelry and weapons.
Archaeologists discovered a hoard of Bronze Age artifacts while doing routine survey work in a field in the Czech Republic.
The bronze objects — which include eight arm rings, two pins, eight axes and one spearhead — were found near Budyně nad Ohří, a town about 35 miles (56 kilometers) northwest of Prague, Radio Prague International reported.
Researchers estimate that most of the items, which they found using metal detectors, date to around 1600 B.C.
"Most items are characteristic of the Middle Bronze Age, with only one ax belonging to the earlier period," Martin Trefný, an associate professor at the Museum of the Říp Region and the University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně and the curator of the hoard, said in an email. One ax is even older and dates to the Early Bronze Age.
"Axes could have been used as tools or weapons. The latter function also applies to the spearhead," Trefný said. "Bracelets were forearm ornaments, and pins served either to fasten clothing or, for example, to style women's hair."
Archaeologists remain unclear about why the hoard was buried, but they have proposed three possibilities.

"In the first case, the hoards are presumed to have a votive function, meaning they served as offerings to deities," Trefný said. "In the second case, we speak of an economic function, where hoards are interpreted as, for example, storage for manufacturers of the given items."
Alternatively, the buried items could reflect "a crisis situation, where it was necessary to hide the items, for example, from enemies," he said.
The treasure could be worth "millions of crowns," Trefný told Radio Prague International. (One million Czech crowns, or koruna, is about $42,500.)
"All the items testify to the technological advancement of bronze casters and processors in Central Europe 3,500 years ago," Trefný told Live Science. "The composition of the hoard also contributes to understanding the warfare, craft techniques and contemporary fashion of the time. Considering that hoards might have a ritual significance, they can also reveal a bit about the contemporary religion."
In the "near future," these found items will be on display at the Podřipské Museum, located about 30 miles (50 km) north of Prague, Radio Prague International reported.

Once upon a time, we lived in thatch roofed cottages and cooked over barely controlled open flames. We had lamps full of oil or gas. Which we lit on fire for light, and poured hot coals into a metal box which we draped in cloth to heat our beds. As such, small failures in manufacturing, maintenance or attention could easily lead to fires. Now we have extinguishers and sprinklers and smoke detectors and OSHA and building codes regarding fire safety. While it is not strictly true that the only fires are now arson, for the purpose of metaphor it us much as if it were.
Once upon a time, the ground was hard and crops were less hardy and kept fresh only a few days. Weather was unpredictable. As such a bit of weather or disrupted supplies or regional problems could cause severe famine. Now we have industrial farming and fertilizer and canning and freezing. While regional food disruption is still possible, the only way famine can happen is either mismanagement to a criminal degree of incompetence or outright malice.
The fact that we understand this for fire and arson but do not distinguish between accidental famine of the past and deliberate famine of the present is telling.
Denial of resources needed to live is an act of violence.

Creature yet again brings you a thing it found
A friend and I found this absolute tank of a timepiece at an antique store and had no clue what we were looking at. It's called a watch-clock or watchman's clock. It's like a punch clock, but you carry it. This one is an Eco Portable.

So we brought it home, watched a youtube video, and managed to pick open the small lever tumbler lock that secured the back.

And inside we found this paper disk which gave us the name of this machine, and the last day it was used, Jan 3 1941. Also that metal plate says "TIME DETECTOR" which is a fucking awesome name.

There are several subassemblies. The lever tumbler lock, the pin and tumbler lock, the punching needles, and the clock itself (which I didn't open, since it is working, and I don't know how to service clocks)
The paper disc turns in sync with the hour hand. Station keys have a projection on the shaft, opposite the teeth, which pushes one of the 10 needle levers to make a hole in the paper disk, corresponding to the number of the station.
A guard carries the watchclock to each station, picks up the tethered key and turns it in the clock. Later, the clock can be opened (making one more hole at the edge of the paper, for tamper detection) with the master key (lever tumbler one) and read to see how the user moved throughout the day.
Later I found another watchclock at a different store. Previous owner evidently didn't manage to pick the lid lock, and resorted to violence with a screwdriver.

This one seemed much newer, and would stamp a paper tape with ink. The metal plate said it should be serviced in August 1965.
Now here's the crazy bit. An article on Detex's website backs up the Wikipedia article on this. Detex was manufacturing these fully mechanical watchclocks up until the end of 2011. Some of these clock designs go back into the 19th century. In 2011 you could call Detex on an iPhone 4s and ask to buy brand new devices whose design has barely changed since the day War of the Worlds was published. And receive paper and spare parts for it until 2016, too. Talk about long-term support.

okay but -
the first day the doctor is staying over at their house, its - for lack of a better word - normal. it feels normal, like having a friend over, even having the doctor over. they're coming down from the rage and anger of "the giggle". no one knows how to reconcile with the hurt they've caused, how to move on from the hurt they've experienced.
donna's just grateful that her family is alive if nothing else. they're clearly struggling - rose staying in her room, sylvia quieter than normal, even shaun seems a bit more keen to compliment her than usual. and then theres the doctor too - sitting in the living room sometimes, pacing around the garden at others.
it's not even like he seems restless - rather just a bit uncomfortable. staying around after a devastation like this is busy, but its the kind of busy that donna knows he's not used to, is uncomfortable with. too many long meetings on rebuilding UNIT. too many boring discussions about the future, prevention. the doctor has some great ideas, but donna can see (can feel, almost, her mind flashing with the memory of a brain moving that fast, of a body that unable to keep still), can see how he's itching to do something.
but still, it's the days after that are even worse. the meetings peter off, the plan is in motion and the need for the doctor for such mundane tasks is gone. the doctor has time to rest now.
of course, he doesnt. donna discovers this as shes woken up at 3 in the morning by scraping on her window, the night before their first actual day off. the doctor explains that he is just resealing the windows - they had started to become less sealed, and it can let in breezes from the time winds, and those can be very dangerous when you sleep.
donna, woken mid sleep, just nods and turns over to place the pillow over her ear and block out the noise.
but thats just the beginning. she comes downstairs in the morning to find the entire kitchen in shambles, the doctor claiming that he was inventing something that would cut down her morning routine by hours. she is not interested in arguing before shes had some coffee, so she just smiles, grabs the (so far untouched) kettle, and moves on.
by the evening the doctor's managed to put together the appliances in more or less the same fashion - though the toaster seems to sing now while it's toasting ("always good to have a nice tune to wake you up, yeah?"), the fridge makes a kind of grumbling noise as the food starts to go bad ("useful in telling what you need to eat!"). the oven, so far, seems to be untouched, until they notice that any magnetic items brought near it seem to cause the oven to act as a sort of metal detector ("this, perhaps, was not the must useful addition").
the changes don't stop. over the next week donna discovers that amongst other things - her closet's been reindexed so all the clothes are arranged by date of manufacturing. the kitchen spices are restocked with flavors from planets she's never heard of. donna swears that the hose was even repainted.
this goes on for weeks, which turn into months. the doctor just doesn't seem to stop. either doing things around the house or running into the tardis and fiddling with things there. it comes to a point where sylvia, dona, rose and shaun are sitting around the table, watching the doctor muck about the garden where sylvia goes "does that man ever rest?"
and just that alone hits donna - makes her realize, she never sees him rest. the bed in the spare room is untouched, he's never just sitting down except at meals when she makes him sit down, makes him get some food inside of him. time lords, she's been told over and over again, don't need to eat as often. but she feels his bones digging into her in the occasions that they hug.
its like taming a cat, she thinks, to get the doctor to come inside and rest for a moment. a bit of deceit, a bit of trying to make the space more comfortable for him, and a lot of time and patience. it takes another few months of a more pronounced effort. of conversations with the doctor - of "this was meant to be a break. you're not taking one"
she's not even sure it works, really. figures she's done her best and its a part of them that wont change. and its fine, she's donna, she's lived in their head, knows how much is going on in there.
its not until one night, when she's woken up to a noise coming from down the hall. it takes her a moment, of heading closer to the noise and realizing its coming from the doctors room, to figure out what it is. and it shatters her heart when she does.
the doctor, in his room, crying in his sleep. clearly trying to muffle the noise, but its only so possible when you're unconscious. she hears the beginnings of screams, occasionally, but cut off, as though trying to stop anyone from hearing. as though trying desperately not to let anyone find out.
