We’re topping off Black History Month with the inaugural edition of our Power of Books Author Series.

We’ll be talking with Dr. Michael Datcher about why it’s important for stories containing characters that have diverse backgrounds and life experience to be told. We also touch on the dangers of restricting or erasing these narratives, and the damage that’s done when books about diversity are banned.

Dr. Datcher is an engaged scholar and author of the critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller Raising Fences: A Black Man’s Love Story, and the Pulitzer Prize-nominated Animating Black and Brown Liberation. He’s also co-editor of Tough Love: The Life and Death of Tupac Shakur.

His most recent work is the stunning and powerful picture book Harlem at Four – written for his young daughter, and illustrated by Coretta Scott King Award-Winning illustrator Frank Morrison. 

Disguised as a children’s book, Harlem at Four weaves together themes of Black family and Black culture. Dr. Datcher’s book also addresses Black history in the world’s most famous Black neighborhood – Harlem – which produced one of the most significant eras of cultural expression and self-determination in our nation’s history.

Review of 'Americus'

Americus, a first novel by Michael Datcher, is a compelling story told on two levels—the first is the story of a black family at the turn of the century that struggles to find and hold a place in society, and come to grips with dealing with each other, while the second is a gripping narrative of race relations in America at the early part of the 20th century.
