Happy 28th to THE ROCK (1996), one of the best action movies of the 1990's in my opinion, and because I subscribe to the theory that John Mason is an older version of Sir Sean Connery's 007, I also consider it one of the best James Bond movies, too.

Nerdery
Here is something the first episode of Inspector Morse (1987) and the first episode of the magnificent BBC radio series of The Lord of the Rings (1981) have in common:-
Philip Voss (the Coroner / the Lord of the Nazgul[1]) asks searching questions of Peter Woodthorpe (Max DeBryn[2] / Gollum).
I have to wonder whether the parallel occurred to either or both of them during the filming of Morse. ;-)
Incidentally, because this delights me, here's a full list (so far! I may have missed some!) of actors who were in both the LotR radio series and the morseverse:-
James Grout (DCS Strange in Inspector Morse / Butterbur)
Michael Horden - (Dr Starkie in Inspector Morse ("Service for all the Dead") / Gandalf)
John McAndrew (Leslie Garnier in Endeavour ("Cartouche") / Pippin)
Robert Stephens (Sir Wilfred Mulryne in Inspector Morse ("The Setting of the Sun" / Aragorn)
Philip Voss (the Coroner in Inspector Morse / the Lord of the Nazgul)
Peter Woodthorpe (Max DeBryn / Gollum)
That all makes me so happy. :D
ALSO
a) James Bradshaw's played Bilbo Baggins in a stage production of The Hobbit so Max really is the hobbit pathologist (Bilbo!Max and Gollum!Max ;-) )
b) the composer of the LotR radio series was the late, great Stephen Oliver who (was the wonderful comedian John Oliver's uncle and also) wrote the music for the RSC musical of Nicholas Nickleby that was rather a hit in the 1970s. It was the success of that musical that was a huge part of why Trevor Nunn and the RSC in general were willing to take a risk on a musical of rather a long book by Victor Hugo in the 1980s... So, there's a Roger Allam connection too. ;-)
[1] Aka the Witch-King of Angmar, but he's called the LotN in the radio series cast list (and it makes sense for him as a title for nerdy reasons I won't go into ;-) ).
[2] "DeBryn" was created as Max's surname for Endeavour so strictly speaking that's inaccurate but.

The Saint: The Reluctant Revolution (5.4, ITC, 1966)
"You seem to know a lot about what's happening in our small country?"
"Well, I know from what I've seen so far that the sooner you get rid of this present lot, the better."
"Good! Then, uh, then you will... you will help us?"
"I was just waiting for the invitation."
#the saint#the reluctant revolution#itc#leslie charteris#john stanton#leslie norman#roger moore#barry morse#jennie linden#martin benson#peter illing#gerard heinz#michael godfrey#peter halliday#john garrie#louis raynor#maria roza#norman florence#clive cazes#a familiar Saint plot‚ as Simon gets mixed up in the civil unrest of a fictional country (this week‚ San Pablo) and throws his lot in with#the rebels. it's worth noting tho that this feels like a somewhat darker treatment of the trope; Simon is witness to the execution by#firing squad of an 18yr old boy‚ and later is present (if not actively involved) for the killing of a traitor in the rebel ranks. a solid#cast of familiar faces but the stand out is of course Barry Morse‚ in one of his earliest british tv appearances; despite being english by#birth and having got his start at RADA‚ Morse had spent most of his career in the US until this point‚ including a long running co starring#role on The Fugitive (and guest spots in iconic series like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits). he'd end up as something of an ITC#regular‚ later taking supporting roles in The Adventurer and Space: 1999. here he's an american crook who's attached himself to the#president of San Pablo; actually the show is almost subversive in its depiction of this state being controlled by a local officials whose#greed and corruption is exploited by US agents (not just the crook played by Morse‚ but brief mention of US oil concerns playing a major#role in determining the current and future policies of this country). i mean the CIA aren't mentioned by name but it doesn't take a lot of#squinting to read between those lines...

♡ Slashers as drinks ♡
Michael Myers — Water
• Firstly, it is good for the body (Michael can also be useful, yes)
• Secondly, if you replace many harmful drinks with water, your life will become much better. Well, if you spend more time with Michael, your life will get a little better (hey, he will kill all the people who somehow offend you, he will save your life from "bad drinks")
• Water is so delicious when you don't drink for several hours in a row. Seriously. Especially after some training. And so you come home after a long day, and you are greeted by this miracle (yeah, very friendly, especially with his emotionality) and you spend the whole evening together. Cute.
• Just, if you love Michael (I do), drink more water. And you will support Michael, and your body will thank you :)
Jason Voorhees — Morse
• It's sweet.
• It's delicious.
• This is useful, especially if it is at home.
• Well, just look at this adorable bun, it's impossible not to love it! It is so sweet and refreshing, like a delicious fruit drink made from fresh summer berries! It's like I'm back at camp again.
Bubba Sawyer — Cocoa with marshmallow
• Brighten up any of your cold evening with his warm, pleasant company.
• You, him and a warm blanket on the sofa in front of the fireplace, what could be better?
• This man has the most tremulous and loving hugs. His big plush body is literally created for pleasant, gentle hugs. And take another ginger cookie for both of you, and it will be the best evening of your lives.
• Cocoa will help you relax after a long chase after victims and dragging a heavy chainsaw. Bubba's tense body begs for such a pleasant rest.
Thomas Hewitt — Hot chocolate
• Like hot chocolate, it is very sweet and pleasant. Warms the throat and soul and all that.
• God, have you seen this divine man? I'm ready to kiss it all, it's the sweetest chocolate in the world.
• Lyude-Mae, thank you for raising such an incredible boy.
• Chocolate improves brain function and increases dopamine levels in the brain, isn't that a sign? In addition, the touch of another person produces dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin, which lift the mood and increase resistance to stress. Hugs?
Stu Matcher/Billy Loomis — Vodka
• Can I not comment on this..?
Vincent Sinclair — Milkshake (your favorite flavor)
• Oh, yes.
• Milkshake is especially good in the heat. A little cream, your favorite ice cream and some fresh berries (you can do without them) and voila, it turns out such a yummy.
• You can freeze and get ice cream. Multifunctional boy.
• If you start drinking, the cocktail ends in an instant, and then you want more and more... This boy is addictive.
• But he's so sweet...
Bo Sinclair — Pomegranate juice
• I just don't like pomegranate juice. But it's useful. Bo, what's the use of you? (Sorry if you like him)
Lester Sinclair — Mineral water
• Simple and tasteful.
• Lester is really like a mineral water. In a difficult moment, he will always offer his friendly shoulder so that you can lean on or cry.
• The best thing you'll find with a hangover...
• Quenches thirst better than sweet soda.
• If you add syrup to it, you will get a sweet fruit lemonade. This boy will help in all cases of life.
Pyramid head - Green tea
• Many people don't like it (for example, my dad), but if you try this divine drink, you won't be able to drink something else.
• Pyra is truly a gift to the universe!
• Improves well-being, skin condition, accelerates metabolism, improves mood and the name system... I can go on for a long time.
• Delicious both hot and cold (But the Pyramid head one is always hot as Hell...)
• This man is addictive.
John Kramer — Lemonade
• Simple and tasteful.
• You won't find a better alternative for the holidays.
• It's delicious. It's beautiful. This is always relevant. Eternal classics.
• With what other drink do you get to know the essence of this life?
• Chilled lemonade with ice cubes and mint...
Amanda Young — Red wine
• Oh, this baby is the best.
• Improves sleep. Any time spent with this goddess is fine, but sleep is especially good. Next to Amanda, you will only have sweet, pleasant dreams! Maybe even smut... I assure you, sleeping with her is a pleasure.
• Useful for pressure. If Amanda is around, your heart starts beating wildly in a chaotic dance, and the blood rises to your pale cheeks until this moment. Now you don't look so tired, right?
• Hugs and kisses with this gorgeous woman are like Paradise, so it's quite possible to say that she herself tastes like good wine.
Mark Hoffman — Black coffee
• He took my heart.
• No sugar is needed to taste this man.
• At first it seems bitter and nasty, but... Hey, pour me another cup, please?
• It's fucking addictive, and after a while you just won't be able to drink coffee with sugar.
• Where to sign to sell your soul to the Devil? I just want to drink this coffee forever (and have Hoffman forever, ahem)
• As black as his soul.
• Bitter, but delicious in its own way and damn sweet.
• For connoisseurs of true art and something truly beautiful.
Brahms Heelshire — Milk
• Baby Brahmsey.
• Helps you fall asleep. This man will ask for a bedtime story and a kiss before going to bed... And then he will throw you on the bed and ask you to fall asleep with him.
• You know, it's good for the throat if you're sick.
• Milk reminds of childhood ...
• Sometimes milk is nasty and Brahms too. If your mood is more towards tea than coffee, drink tea. Brahms will get mad and calm down. And after that there will be time for hugs.
Hannibal Lecter — Cognac
• This man is good.
• After his appearance in my life, I decided to connect my life with psychology and helping others (and after Kramer's appearance, of course).
• Always good. Especially if you are some kind of boss or a serious person, you should have cognac. In the movies, it looks like a success.
• This man understands exquisite things and looks so great all the time... Really cognac, there is no other way.
• Will support you on a lonely night and cheer you up when you meet some of your friend.
Will Graham — Black tea with milk/cream
• This is... Cute?
• My cousin had a grandmother, she always made me such tea. It evokes a feeling of nostalgia and comfort, as if I am back in childhood.
• This is the most comfortable character for me! So warm, sweet, sweet and pleasant ...
• It's unusual, especially if you try it for the first time, but it's delicious, I assure you.
• A combination of classic harsh tea and something soft and kind from childhood, Will is really the best.
• I want to get to know Will by sight. I want to hug him. I want to be him, okay?

Discharge Petition for H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964
Record Group 233: Records of the U.S. House of RepresentativesSeries: General Records
This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. Emanuel Celler, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, attempted to use this discharge petition to move the bill out of committee without holding hearings. The petition failed to gain the required majority of Congress (218 signatures), but forced Chairman Smith to schedule hearings.

Bebe Neuwirth in Caricature
I didn't plan it like this, but Bebe's caricature showcase just so happens to coincide on my schedule with Cabaret's opening night. So while she's glamming it up on the red carpet and readying for her soon-to-be-Tony-nominated performance, allow me to present beloved Diva Bebe Neuwirth in Caricature.
Tumblr media
"Bebe Neuwirth," Sweet Charity, Published June 20, 1986 - Al Hirschfeld
Tumblr media
"Cheers," Published December 11, 1990 - Al Hirschfeld
CHEERS: TED DANSON, KIRSTIE ALLEY, NICK COLASANTO, RHEA PERLMAN, GEORGE WENDT, JOHN RATZENBERGER, WOODY HARRELSON, BEBE NEUWIRTH, KELSEY GRAMMER, SHELLY LONG, AND ROGER REES, 1990
Tumblr media
"Damn Yankees", Published February 27, 1994 - Al Hirschfeld
Pictured: Bebe Neuwirth with Victor Garber, Jerrod Emick, and George Abbott.
Tumblr media
"Chicago," Published November 24, 1996 - Al Hirschfeld
Pictured: Joel Grey, Ann Reinking, Bebe Neuwirth, James Naughton
Tumblr media
"Toasts Of The Town," Published June 1, 1997 - Al Hirschfeld
Pictured: Frank Langella, Julie Harris, Christopher Plummer, Brian Bradford, Michael Hayden, Bebe Neuwirth, Rebecca Luker, Fiona Shaw, Lillias White, David Morse, Angie Phillips, Donal McCann, Michael Gambon, David Rasche, Lia Williams, Janet McTeer, Anthony Sher, etc.
By 1986, Bebe had a Tony Award and a solo Hirschfeld drawing to her name, and by 1997, she had another Tony and three more Hirschfelds from both stage and screen work. Hirschfeld had a sprawling collection of art not limited just to Broadway. And of course, the feature Hirschfeld most prominently exaggerated (though not by much) were her award-winning gams.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bebe Neuwirth for Sardis, 1997 | Unrelated: Bebe Neuwirth and Donna Murphy for the 2010 Drama League Nominations
Bebe's Sardis portrait is, of course, her in character as Velma Kelly in Chicago. The style of her caricature seemed to bridge the change between the old-school exaggeration and comic features that made the drawings so distinctive, and the blander, homogenous styles of today. Bebe's portrait came a few years before the true shift began, and frankly, she's better off for it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Bebe Neuwirth," The Lights of Broadway, Autumn 2017 - Squigs
I've neglected to mention it so far, but each Squigs trading card comes equipped with a little "fun fact" section on the back. Most cards include a few biographical points, show credits, and a special "did you know?" With Bebe's return to Broadway this season, we can only hope we'll get another Squigs illustration to add to the list.

Shirley MacLaine and Anthony Perkins in The Matchmaker (Joseph Anthony, 1958)
Cast: Shirley Booth, Anthony Perkins, Shirley MacLaine, Paul Ford, Robert Morse, Perry Wilson, Wallace Ford, Russell Collins. Screenplay: John Michael Hayes, based on a play by Thornton Wilder. Cinematography: Charles Lang. Art direction: Roland Anderson, Hal Pereira. Film editing: Howard A. Smith. Music: Adolph Deutsch.
Like Lynn Riggs's Green Grow the Lilacs and Ferenc Molnár's Liliom, Thornton Wilder's play The Matchmaker is not performed much these days. The chief reason is probably that they were all made into hugely successful musicals: respectively, Oklahoma!, Carousel, and Hello, Dolly! And unlike George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion or William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, which weren't superseded by their musical incarnations My Fair Lady and West Side Story, they seem somewhat naked without their musical adornments. Still, the film version of The Matchmaker, made three years after the play became a Broadway success but six years before the musical smash, retains a great deal of charm. Much of it comes from its cast: Shirley Booth as Dolly Gallagher Levi, Paul Ford as Horace Vandergelder, Shirley MacLaine as Irene Molloy, Anthony Perkins as Cornelius Hackl, and in his first substantial screen role, an impish Robert Morse as Barnaby Tucker. Shorn of its musical trimmings, the movie depends largely on the farce-timing of the cast, who frequently break the fourth wall to talk directly to the audience. For some viewers, a little whimsy goes a long way, and The Matchmaker has an awful lot of it. Its "opening up" from the stage version by screenwriter John Michael Hayes sometimes feels forced, and the ending depends too heavily on an unconvincingly complete about-face by Vandergelder. But director Anthony, who did most of his work in the theater and had only one previous screen directing credit for The Rainmaker (1956), keeps things moving nicely.
