Call me by your name.Dune. Little woman and beautiful boy
Thank you! Timothee Chalamet edition, haha.
Call Me By Your Name
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece
I didn't love this movie as much as everyone else seemed to, and I had huge issues in the way it approached the age gap, but I did enjoy it overall, and I think Timothee and Michael Stuhlberg gave pretty moving performances.
Dune
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece
Another one that didn't quite work for me, but!! I will say that I really value this one a lot for bucking the Marvel/Joss Whedon/James Gunn style of quippy, quickly-edited sci fi. Tonal and style diversity in genre is really important, and it's been lacking in big budget, mainstream science fiction over the last decade or so. I find Denis Villeneuve's stuff pretty hit or miss, but I do love his commitment to bringing the slowburn back to sci-fi, and so while I didn't love this movie, I still respected what it was, and will be seeing and supporting the sequel (especially given the increase in women characters!).
Little Women
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece
Not every actor can make the transition to directing, but I think Greta Gerwig's really proven herself to be an empathetic, warm and compelling filmmaker, and that's really on show here. There's something so full of heart in her style of storytelling, and I love that she's unapologetically feminine in the stories she tells and the way she tells them. I really loved this one, and I am very excited to see what she does with the Barbie movie.
Beautiful Boy
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece
I saw the other one with the similar plot that came out around the same time - Ben is Back - which I thought was pretty lacklustre. I think this one's supposed to be better though? I really like Kaitlyn Dever, so I should check it out!

So I caught up on Fargo and I lost my shit at this part
Ewan MacGregor: So, ah, where you from?
David Thewlis, in literally the heaviest accent he can muster: America.

full offence but Michael Stuhlbarg did not give one of the most beautiful monologues of this year and become Frank Ocean’s new dad just to lose his Oscar nomination to Woody Harrelson

What you two had had everything and nothing to do with intelligence. He was good, and you were both lucky to have found each other, because you too are good.
André Aciman, Call Me By Your Name
I love the book and the movie, but the talk between Elio and his father might be the most inspiring and amazing part of this incredible love story!

The thing that fucking gets me about Beauty and the Beast is that the girl falls for the guy who imprisoned her. It’s Stockholm Syndrome x10. [About The Shape of Water] I want the girl to look at the guy and say “I’m gonna take that fish home.”  - Guillermo del Toro, 12/02/17 @ The Angelika

At 89, James Ivory delivered one of the best screenplays of his career, an adaptation of André Aciman’s novel directed by Luca Guadagnino with a startling degree of erotic intensity. The summer romance in rural Italy between teen Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and the strapping young scholar Oliver (Armie Hammer) takes place with an expressionistic quality worthy of ‘70s-era Bertolucci and takes a classy approach to the subversive kick that such a taboo relationship entails.
The movie never treats its characters’ desires as anything but an exciting rush of romantic possibilities (and one icky scene involving fruit) — at least until the summer comes to a close, and young Elio learns the hard way that he’s been living in a fantasy propelled by passion. Chalamet’s star-making performance is a risky maneuver that sets the stage for a promising career, and the character’s warmhearted father (Michael Stuhlberg) gives a closing monologue about the nature of love and yearning for the ages. This is an emotionally riveting coming-of-age story told with such remarkable honesty and lyricism that it exists out of time — it could have played to a rapt audience 40 years ago, and will almost certainly have the same effect 40 years hence. —EKhttps://www.indiewire.com/feature/best-lgbt-movies-21st-century-gay-lesbian-1201869538/7/ Jun 7, 2022

The film is a story of first love between Maren, a young woman learning how to survive on the margins of society, and Lee, an intense and disenfranchised drifter, as they meet and join together for a thousand-mile odyssey which takes them through the back roads, hidden passages, and trap doors of Ronald Reagan’s America. But despite their best efforts, all roads lead back to their terrifying pasts and to a final stand which will determine whether their love can survive their otherness. Guadagnino fell in love with it upon first reading, and immediately saw Chalamet, Russell, Stuhlbarg in key roles, and thought of his filmmaker pal Green for another role.
“I’d been handed this beautiful script by David Kajganich, and while I was reading it, I felt like I knew how to make this movie,” Guadagnino said. “At the same time, the second I read it, I said, I think only Timothee can play this role. It was serendipity because he was in Rome and I was in Rome and we met after this year of Covid constriction, and we could meet and spend time together. He’s fantastic, a great performer and to see him soaring the way he is doing now, I feel proud of him. And this character is something very new for him, both endearing and heartbreaking.
“I’ve been a fan of Taylor Russell since I saw her in Waves, and I made it a point to myself to make sure we found something to do together,” he said. “When I read the script, I went straight to her because she is such a bright, sensible actress. This is a very romantic story, about the impossibility of love and yet, the need for it. Even in extreme circumstances. Timmy and Taylor have this power, this gleaming power, to portray these universal feelings.”
