Meine kleine Remedy-Sammlung

Happy Alan Week everyone!

Eigentlich wollte ich das hier schon gestern schreiben, aber das Spiel auf das ich mich so lange gefreut habe, hat mich abgelenkt. Wer hätte das gedacht!

Nach langen 13 Jahren ist Alan Wake 2 endlich da und die rund fünf Stunden, die ich bisher gespielt habe, sind feinster Horror. Zur leicht verspäteten Feier des Tages hier alle Remedy-Spiele, die ich physisch besitze.

- Die Edge mit der AW2-Titelgeschichte (obere Mitte) als eine Art Platzhalter, da Remedy diesmal Alan Wake 2 als reinen Download-Titel veröffentlicht hat. Ich bin okay damit, schließlich besitze Control (Remedys voriges Spiel) auch nur digital.

- Max Payne 2 (untere Mitte), mein erstes Spiel von Remedy. Max Payne 1 landete 2001 noch auf dem Index, ergo war es sehr schwer in Deutschland zu bekommen. Als Max Payne 2 dann 2003 erschien, wurden die USK-Altersfreigaben bei Spielen endlich mit dem FSK-Altersfreigaben bei Filmen gleichgesetzt. Max Payne 2 in den Händen zu halten war nicht nur besonders, weil ich diesem Spiel und Remedys Liebe zum Detail verfallen würde, sondern auch weil ich endlich ein gewalthaltiges Spiele ganz normal im Handel kaufen konnte. Kinder, ihr wisst nicht wie gut ihr es heute habt! Früher wurde jedes Spiel mit ein bisschen Blut und Gewalt schneller indiziert als du "Liste der jugendgefährdenden Medien" sagen kannst.

- Alan Wake Limited Collector's Edition von 2010 (oben links). Max Payne 2 mochte ich so sehr, dass ich Alan Wake sofort haben musste. Und obendrein ein Spiel, in dem man einen Buchautor spielt, der von seinem eigenen Werk heimgesucht wird? Zu einer Zeit in der Spielfiguren hauptsächlich langweilige Soldaten-Dudebros waren? Mit den Worten "Ich habe ein Date mit einem Autor!" verabschiedete ich mich am 12. Mai 2010 von einem Freund und ergatterte im örtlichen GameStop eine der Collector's Editionen des Spiels. Ich war sofort verliebt in das Spiel. Diese Version ist eines meiner wertvollsten Spieleschätze.

- Quantum Break von 2016 (links unten und rechts unten). Alan Wake war ein Erfolg bei den Kritikern, aber kommerziell ließ der Titel zu wünschen übrig. Es gab noch zwei DLCs für das Spiel und dann 2012 als digitales Spin-Off bzw. Mini-Fortsetzung Alan Wake's American Nightmare, aber das war es mit Alan Wake. Stattdessen machte man Quantum Break, einen Zeitreise-Shooter. Ich weiß schon gar nicht mehr wieso ich mir Quantum Break damals nicht zum Release geholt habe. Zu dem Zeitpunkt hatte ich eine Xbox One, daran kann es also nicht gelegen hatte. Vielleicht hatte gerade nicht die Kohle für einen Vollpreistitel, vielleicht war ich auch enttäuscht, dass es nicht Alan Wake 2 war. Erst ein paar Monate später kaufte ich jemanden sein Exemplar von Quantum Break ab, samt Steelbook. Und es ist ein gutes Spiel! Mit einer tollen Zeitreisegeschichte! Nur das Experiment mit der im Spiel enthaltenen Fernsehserie finde ich mittlerweile enttäuschend, aber das liegt daran, dass Remedy die Serie nicht produziert hat, sondern eine andere Firma.

- Alan Wake Remastered von 2021 (rechts oben). Die aufgehübschte Version des Originals von 2010. Gute Spiele altern nicht. Besonders wenn es eines deiner Lieblingsspiele ist.

The Case of the “Beryozka” Camp and What Followed: Declassified Documents

It’s hard to find someone who hasn’t heard of the horrifying and mysterious events that took place in the infamous Beryozka camp in 1993. Under unexplained circumstances, an invited priest, called in to rid the camp of “unclean forces,” was brutally murdered. Over the next three days, all children and staff of the camp died under strange and unexplainable conditions, even those who had already been picked up by their parents. Miraculously, only one 9-year-old boy survived, but investigators were never able to obtain a coherent account from him about what happened on that hot summer day—July 12.

Only nearly 32 years later, documents surfaced from an unknown source, shedding light on the unbelievable and unexplainable events that took place in Beryozka camp on July 12, 1993—and what followed. These documents also reveal the fate of the surviving child.

Operational Report — Incident with Clergyman

Case No. MZ-13/TSHK / Camp “Beryozka” / July 1993

Object: Abomination

Involved Individual: Father Alexey, 63, local parish priest, former chaplain in the Ministry of Internal Affairs troops.

Status: Deceased. Circumstances — unstable. To be removed from public church records.

Background:

After numerous complaints from children about nightmares, sensations of suffocation, and “a man with a soft face standing at the door,” the camp administration urgently reached out to the local clergy.

Father Alexey arrived at the camp the morning of July 12. Staff testified that he spent two hours in prayer near the old mess hall — the same building where the Abomination was first “manifested.”

Sequence of Events (based on survivor accounts and a fragment of audio recording):

12:46 — The priest entered the mess hall with a censer and epitrachelion. When urged not to go alone, he replied:

“It is only fear. Fear holds no power over the spirit.”

12:48 — Unusual noise heard from inside: like chains dragging on the floor, then a low hum resembling a choir of voices.

12:51 — A voice from within:

“Leave. In the name… in the name of the Father… begone, unclean!”

Response unintelligible — a dual voice recorded, one mechanical and stuttering, the other whispering in an unknown language.

12:54 — Silence. Then a screech. Inhuman.

Witnesses say the sound “entered the chest,” causing temporary blindness and vomiting in one counselor.

Discovery of the Body:

13:06 — Door opened. Inside:

• The priest is seated, back arched unnaturally.

• Eyes burned out — black craters.

• Entire rib cage charred from the inside, resembling old coal, yet the robes remain intact.

• On his abdomen, carved: “He is not yours. He has been mine since birth.”

• In the corner — the censer floats mid-air, spinning slowly for 3 minutes after witnesses arrive.

Aftermath:

• Buried in a sealed coffin, service held without disclosing circumstances.

• Diocese listed cause of death as “cardiac failure.”

• Camp staff ordered never to speak of the incident.

• One of the children, later adopted in Germany, was arrested at 17 for a ritual murder that mirrored the priest’s body markings.

Comment by operative of task force “DREAM-17”:

“They thought faith was protection. But it doesn’t attack the body. It crushes faith, pulls out weakness. When a saint loses his mind — that’s his feast.”

Ok, I'm trying to think through the bandwidth limitations of doing things in audio. In audio, you're going to be limited to ASK or FSK.

With ASK, let's pick a tone, let's say 1kHz, which is easily within the range for any speaker and microphone. This gives you a limit for an ASK of, in theory, the Nyqist limit of 500 Hz, but let's say in practice more like 100 Hz. You're limited in the number of amplitude positions because outside noise is going to mess up your SNR (unless you do lockin detection on the receive end, which should be fairly easy to program?). So let's say you're limited to 4-ASK, 4 different volumes. This means each volume level can communicate 2 bits at a time. It would take 4 time steps (where you change volume each time step) to transmit 1 byte. To get his data rate of 5.3 bytes/s, you'd need to change volume 21 times per second, 21 Hz. This doesn't seem that hard; in fact you should have about 5 times more headroom.

With lockin detection, though, which will wipe out most of your noise, probably boosting your SNR by a factor of 100? With lockin detection--which, again, is really easy for this particular sort of use-case to write a software solution for, we're talking like probably less than 10 lines of code--you should easily be able to do 32-ASK. Wait, no. How many bits does a typical audio card have... Ok, Amazon is listing a sound card with a 24 bit DAC for $84 and another with a 32 bit DAC for $113. DAC in this case means speaker, although I think you'd need a pretty high quality speaker to take advantage of 32 bits. 32 bits is 4 billion points, and even assuming 100 of those points need to be set aside for your waveform (not true: in an ASK config, you have a single tone, so technically you only need 2 pts, or 1 bit, set aside for your waveform), you'd still have 26 bits left, or 6 million different volumes you can play at your single tone. Obvs that's not practical. But let's say realistically, you can set aside 10 bits for your volume, so 1000 different tones. I don't think the mic could pick all that up, though. Ok, I'm finding from a google search that a cheap microphone has the SNR to distinguish about 12 bits; meanwhile for the microphone's sound card, I'm seeing stuff on Amazon with 24 bit ADCs. So let's reasonably say 12 bits, with 6 bits devoted to interpreting the tone and the remaining 6 for volume. (This isn't entirely fair because you can have overlap.) 6 bits for volume means 64 different volumes, which is 32 bits transmitted per time step. That's 4 bytes per time step, so you'd only need to change your volume 1.3 times per second. That's super slow. By my estimate you should have like a factor of 76 headroom; you should be able to transmit and receive at about 400 bytes per second. And that's for a 1 kHz tone--use a higher pitch and your speed just multiplies.

So that's ASK. With ASK and devoting a few lines of code to lockin detection, you should be able to do 400 bytes per second. Note that absolutely all radio/tv/etc transmissions over the past like... 90ish? years have been using lockin detection on the receiver side--it is, among other things, the basis behind being able to have multiple radio stations or tv channels existing at once without confusing your radio or tv--so this isn't some special esoteric technique.

Ok, now FSK. FSK is easier. How many distinct tones can your audio card get your speaker to produce? How many can your microphone pick up with reasonable fidelity? Again, you have lockin detection at your disposal, and this is what lockin is really good at--this is channel discrimination--especially if you're doing it in software so your LO can be dynamic, so you can check for the presence of all the channels at once. We don't want to do octaves, because they'll have harmonics that will read as the wrong frequency. In fact, in general you'll have to pick your tones carefully to avoid harmonics. But we can pick some stuff that doesn't have harmonics. Let's say 410 Hz to 4010 Hz in steps of 100; that sequence doesn't have any tones that are harmonics of other tones. That's 36 sounds, 36-FSK, 18 bits (2.25 bytes) per sound. For 410 Hz, the Niquist limit is 205, realistically 41, so you could do 41 tones per second. 92 bytes per second. But really, you can do your tones a lot finer than that! You can do steps of 50 Hz without worrying about any problems with your detection. That's 74 tones, 37 bits, per tone, and 41 tones per second. That's about 190 bytes per second. I have no idea, realistically, what the tone discrimination levels are that would limit FSK for this very specific use-case.

But there you go, it shouldn't be hard at all to do 1-2 orders of magnitude better on your transmission rate.

After brain uploading is invented, besides the obvious it-runs-doom mimicry ("this guy ran their brain on a blender!") there's probably gonna be people transferring their mind around in silly ways.
