Back to Skool (ZX Spectrum)

I wrote at length on Skool Daze and when I look back at what I wrote about it, I think I concentrate too much on how it’s really rather hard to play with modern eyes, because playing the sequel now–which showed up a maximum of a year after Skool Daze, an incredible turnaround, really–I actually just marvel at what incredible little miniature worlds were created in just 48k. And perhaps I’ve just got used to it, but the second time around struggling with esoteric controls (I love that the key to get on the bicycle here is ‘M’. It’s intuitive, you see, because you ‘M’ount a bicycle) or jerky scrolling and limited animation just didn’t seem like that much of a burden. That garish Spectrum palette? Man, it felt like sliding into a warm bath.
That said, of course, Back to Skool is… complicated. It takes an obvious criticism that you might have of the original–that it’s a bit limited, and the things you have to do to complete it don’t really make any sense (you have to hit a lot of shields???) and have tried to make something larger–there’s now a school yard, a whole girl’s school, and new items to use–and create a more complicated puzzle to solve: it’s the new school year, Eric has to get his doctored school report back into the school safe. As with the first game, what you’re supposed to do is written in the cassette inlay, but it honestly took me ages to decipher it so I’m going to write out a quick solution here because there’s a dearth of information on Back to Skool online.
First you need to understand that your overarching goal, really, is to scare the headmistress of the girl’s school by dropping a frog on her head so she’ll drop the key to the safe.
You also need to be aware that getting between the boy’s school and girl’s school is only allowed during playtimes; at other times the boy’s school door is locked (so you can’t get to the playground) and the gate between the schools is locked too, both by the caretaker. In addition, at one point you’re going to need the wine the headmistress keeps in her office, which she only unlocks when the boy’s school is locked up. So you need to handle the caretaker and ensure a way between the schools when you aren’t supposed to be able to. And so:
Immediately search all the desks for the stink bombs and water pistol. Start in the girl’s school because it’s annoying to get to.
Fill the cups near the stairs using the water pistol. Stand on the step and shoot them with your catapult when teachers are passing under, each will yell out a number. When you’ve got all four numbers from the four teachers…
Write it on a clean blackboard. This’ll unlock the bike.
Cycle the bike over to the girl’s side and leave it there for later, when the gate is closed.
Use the stink bombs on the two rooms with windows on the right side of the boy’s school in sight of the headmaster so he’ll open the windows. You need to do both windows.
During class time, basically when the caretaker has just closed the school door, shoot the catapult at the tree from the top window to cause a conker to fall on his head, knocking him out.
Use the water pistol on the plant pot next to the middle window, stand on the pot and walk out the window when the plant grows.
At the (closed) gate, do the same thing with the plant pot.
Run into the girl’s school and jump at the wine to fill your water pistol with wine. Now you can’t use the water pistol to grow plants, so you need to stand on the bike/cycle it into the gate to jump over/get thrown across.
Fill the cups by the stairs with wine, do the catapult/teachers thing again, they’ll now say four letters.
Write those four letters on a clean blackboard. You suddenly have a key and can get into the room next to the science lab where there’s suddenly a frog. Grab it.
Now comes the most annoying part! Get on the bike, cycle it into the girl’s school, stand on it and leap so that you touch the cup on the ground floor, which puts the frog into it. I found the timing infuriating, and there’s a decent chance the headmistress will be standing there barking lines at you throwing you off.
Wait for the headmistress to walk under the cup, shoot her with the catapult, then shoot her again, causing your rock to ricochet off her, dropping the frog from the cup on her.
You’ve now got the key. Hightail it to the headmaster’s office and wait for him to open the door, go in, jump to the safe, you’ve won!
As you can see, the puzzle chain in Back to Skool is honestly quite complicated, but it relies a bit on some old tricks (shooting things to make teachers fall over and yell numbers or letters) although I’ll always think the “write codes on the blackboard” is such an elegant “use the tools you have” bit of design even if it feels somewhat nonsensical.
It took me a while to work it out, but overall, I rather appreciated the design here. Where things fall down a bit compared to the original is that I felt myself–or perhaps the game–straining a bit at the limitations of the original design and the Speccy itself. It’s cool they’ve added new things like having to go to assembly, but the map is so large sometimes classes don’t even start before the bell rings because it takes so long for the teacher AI to get there, which sadly makes it feel a bit less real. Also, because it takes longer to play this (and the game is so much more survivable–Eric can get rid of 6000 lines by kissing his girlfriend at playtime) I became aware that Eric was trapped in the nightmare of an endless school day, because the game never transitions between days.
I’m sure they would have, of course, if they’d had any more memory to do anything with–it’s noticeable here that the game doesn’t have any of the random events from the first, I assume because they couldn’t squeeze them in (although maybe people didn’t like them, the first game was punishing.)
Anyway. I put off playing this for a while because I wasn’t sure how much I was going to enjoy it or how worthy it would be after playing the first, but I have to say the two games are greater than the sum of their parts; each has their own benefits (Skool Daze is the more focused sandbox, Back to Skool arguably has more fun things to do in it) and provide a fascinating alternative direction that games might have taken, so it was well worth it. Just… follow my guide if you want to finish it.
Will I ever play it again? I’ll play the 90’s fan game Klass of ‘99, which somewhat merges the two games. Maybe it’s the ultimate version!
Final Thought: Digging around to find information out about Skool Daze and its sequel I was fascinated to find Skoolkit.ca, a (Canadian?) website that includes full disassemblies of both games with tons of facts, full lists of graphical and gameplay bugs (including pokes that would allow you to make the games more polished than they were at release!) and the games have even been remade in Python but I can’t work out how to make them work. Big up to Richard Dymond, a software engineer in Halifax Nova Scotia for maintaining all that. Did I use his infinite lines poke to beat Back to Skool after having to save and load the original so much it was practically a tool assisted speed run? Now that would be telling. (Yes. Yes I did.)
