A Dockside Mini Observatory Keeps Watch Over a Troubled Lake

Time-series observatories serve the vital role of monitoring ongoing ecosystem changes around the clock. Over the past 12 years (2011-2022), the Muskegon Lake Observatory buoy (MLO) has closely tracked the dynamics of thermal stratification, eutrophication, harmful algal blooms and bottom water hypoxia in Muskegon Lake – a troubled Great Lakes estuary and Area of Concern. However, lack of funding in recent years for long-term projects such as MLO has forced us to innovate to gather essential environmental data on this urbanized Great Lakes estuary that is still undergoing restoration.
We recently assembled and deployed a low-cost land-based mini observatory using reconfigured equipment from the main MLO (Mini-MLO) that monitors the changing surface water quality in Muskegon Lake every hour. Here, undergraduate student Kyle, is using a harness to hang out on the pier’s climbing ladder over the lake to change the batteries in the data logger powering the submerged sonde. The sonde has sensors that measure changes in water quality parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and chlorophyll that the data logger transmits to the project website www.gvsu.edu/buoy/. Im privaten Umfeld ist die Digitalisierung und Vernetzung am besten greif- und begreifbar: mit dem Smartphone, mittlerweile der „beste Freund des Menschen“, kann man schon heute die vielfältigsten Dinge regeln und steuern, egal wo man sich gerade befindet. Einzelne Geräte, wie z.B. die Smart-Watch, werden mit weiteren „smarten Dingen“ vernetzt und die Datenspeicherung erfolgt zentralisiert in der gesicherten „Cloud“. Das alles soll uns im Alltag das Leben erleichtern. Vieles macht meiner Meinung nach absolut Sinn, z.B. am Körper tragbare Notrufsysteme/-Sender in Kliniken oder Sozialbereichen. Oder auch Personen-Ortungssysteme, bei Berufen mit erhöhtem Sicherheitsrisiko. Ein interessantes Beispiel ist das „Capturs“ des gleichnamigen, französischen Herstellers (www.capturs.com). Dieses GPS-Tracking-System mag auf den ersten Blick eher den Fun-Charakter bedienen, offenbart jedoch bei näherem Blick wesentlich mehr: das Wearable-Gerät ermöglicht es, Freunden, der Familie und Fans Routen zu verfolgen und somit live dabei zu sein, wenn Personen ihre Sporttätigkeit ausführen; unabhängig vom jeweiligen Endgerät. Man kann die Daten (Route, Distanz, Höhe, Dauer) exportieren/speichern und sogar in sozialen Netzwerken veröffentlichen. Nun die Besonderheit: bei Stürzen oder Unfällen, verlassen der vordefinierten Route, längeres verweilen an einem Standort und bei schwacher Batterie sendet es automatisch eine Nachricht per E-Mail oder eine SMS an bestimmte Personen. Damit kann im Ernstfall schnell Hilfe angefordert werden. Das Capturs wurde in der OKW-Gehäusereihe MINITEC verbaut und kann für alle Outdoor-Aktivitäten verwendet werden: Wandern, Skifahren, Klettern, Gleitschirmfliegen usw. Weitere für Wearables nutzbare OKW-Gehäusereihen sind das BODY-CASE und das ERGO-CASE.
Industrie 4.0 und IIoT
Doch kommen wir nun wieder zum eigentlichen Thema „Industrie 4.0“ und IIoT „Industrial Internet of Things“ zurück. Es gibt zwischen beiden Begrifflichkeiten einen wesentlichen Unterschied – Industrie 4.0 ist kurz gesagt eine Hightech-Strategie, um die Digitalisierung in der industriellen Produktion voran zu treiben; IIoT ist der konkrete Gebrauch smarter Technologien in der Fertigungsindustrie. Sehr viele Unternehmen beschäftigen sich zurzeit mit der Frage, wie sie die internen Prozesse und über verschiedene Ebenen/Organisationen hinweg transparent gestalten und optimieren können. Im Grunde geht es auch beim IIoT darum, Dinge smarter zu machen, indem sie miteinander kommunizieren. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei Sensoren, welche eingebettet in die Geräte, ständig Daten über Maschinen, spezielle Anwendungsszenarien oder über Anwender und die gesamte Wertschöpfungskette sammeln und zentral abliefern. Die wesentlichen Ziele sind dabei immer gleich: eine bessere Qualität liefern, die Prozesse optimieren und verschlanken, den Einsatz von Ressourcen optimieren, die Aufträge schneller fertig stellen und den Kunden ausliefern. Ein wichtiges Ziel darüber hinaus ist es den Markteinführungs-Zyklus neuer Produkte wesentlich zu verkürzen, um gegenüber dem Wettbewerb Vorteile zu erhalten.
Gehäuse und IIoT
Es werden bereits heute viele OKW-Gehäusereihen für die unterschiedlichsten Anwendungszwecke in der Smart-Factory genutzt. Die Nutzung im späteren Arbeitsalltag ist hierbei vielfältig und somit können die Vorgaben an das Gehäuse recht unterschiedlich sein:

Funk-Datenlogger

Funknetzwerk Access Point

Auf der Feldebene ermöglicht das sWave.NET-Funknetzwerk von steute Schaltgeräte GmbH & Co. KG, die variable Kommunikation zwischen Funkschaltgeräten und Access Points, die ähnlich wie ein Router arbeiten. Sie empfangen die Signale der Funkschaltgeräte, bündeln und senden sie, z.B. per Ethernet oder WiFi an einen oder mehrere Applikationsserver. Die Access Points werden verteilt im Sendebereich installiert und kommunizieren mit den Funkschaltgeräten.

Der conbee Smart TAG basiert auf der Bluetooth-4.x-Spezifikation- mit einer Reichweite von bis zu 150 m. Der voll konfigurierbare TAG verfügt über eine Authentifizierungs-Funktion via Out-Of-Band- oder SecureSimple-Pairing, ist fälschungssicher und hat einen Bewegungssensor, der in der Lage ist, Manipulationsversuche zu erkennen. Dabei werden in dynamisch anpassbaren Sendeintervallen Statusdaten in Advertisement-Paketen übermittelt, welche Auskunft über das zu trackende Objekt geben. Der intelligente TAG meldet zyklisch seine ldentifikationsnummer, Temperatur- und Bewegungsdaten sowie Batteriestatus und optional Position.

Robuster UHF Reader

Die RF-Embedded GmbH hat einen RFID-Reader für den passiven ultrahochfrequenten Funkbereich (UHF) entwickelt, welcher ein Energiefeld aus elektromagnetische Wellen erzeugt. Sobald ein passiver UHF-Transponder in das Energiefeld gelangt, sendet er seinen Speicherinhalt an den entsprechenden RFID Reader.

Just a quick walk through how to use the SD card module with Arduino. It is the same for Micro SD card modules. The Arduino official site provide a library for this purpose, and I will describe how I used this library and explain what each function does.
The SD card module communicates with the Arduino over the serial peripheral interface (SPI) communication protocol. It can be simply connected to the Arduino’s hardware SPI pins. LCD with I2C Module to the Arduino As the name implies, the LCD module communicates with Arduino through I2C communication. After a week of research, brainstorming and studying we ended up making, the SD-CARD (social distancing icard). The SD-CARD consists of an Arduino Nano which is connected with a buzzer, an ultrasonic sensor and 2 LEDs. The ultrasonic sensor calculates the distance between the person wearing it and people near him/her.

I have not tested this library with all the SD card modules, but I think it should work for majority of them, unless you are told by the seller that you should use a different library.
The Library uses standard SPI interface for communication, which hasSPI buses, MISO, MOSI, SCK (CLK) and a chip select signal pin, CS.

The default Arduino library for SD card is huge! With the example read/write sketch, when compiled it’s 13690 Bytes which is half of the available flash space on an Arduino pro mini!
So if you are tight in sketch space, it’s a good idea to find a smaller library. Depends on the SD cards you have and the format you want to use, you have these options.
FAT32 Format (larger than 2GB)
Adafruit SD (almost the same as Arduino SD, except a few optimization on SRAM memory)
FAT16 Format (smaller than 2GB)
I haven’t tested all of these libraries, so do your research and test them before using it. Here I will show you how to use the Arduino SD library.
The SD library comes with the Arduino IDE, so you don’t need to download it. It needs to be include at the beginning of the sketch.
Including `SD.h` automatically creates a global “SD” object which can be interacted within a similar manner to other standard global objects like “Serial”.
Read from SD card
First you need top open the file first.
It will return false if it fails to open the file, so check dataFile before using it. The “read” function reads the file line by line, so you will have to use a while loop, until it fail to reach the end of the file. Now you can write to the file using this.

Note that you need to close the file after finished reading it. Also, you can only open one file at a time, if you want to read the next file, you need to close the current file first.
Write to SD card
First you need to open the file you want to write to with “FILE_WRITE” parameter.
The “open” function takes two parameters, file location and mode (only required for “Write”, if missing by default it opens the file in Read-Only mode). It will return false if it fails to open the file, so check dataFile before using it. Now you can write to the file using this.
Note that you need to close the file after writing to it. Also, you can only open one file at a time, if you want to open the next file, you need to close the current file first.
Check if a File Exists
Create a Text File on SD Card
There isn’t a function for this purposes, but you can open a file with “FILE_WRITE” mode to create a file, if this file doesn’t exist.
Delete a File on SD card
List All the files on SD card
There isn’t a function for this in the library, but we can create a custom function to achieve this purpose. This function is from the example sketch in the Library. It prints the file directory to serial monitor.
