Last year, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the state’s fast-food minimum wage increase into law, which meant that employees at fast-food restaurants in the state went from making $15.50 per hour to $20 per hour. While the decision was lauded by many labor activists as part of broader efforts to improve working conditions and address wage disparities, some economists and fast-food industry members expressed concern over how the law would impact restaurants’ operating costs, which could result in reduced hours for workers or even job cuts.
However, according to new state and federal employment data, California’s fast-food industry has added jobs every month this year — including 11,000 new jobs since the wage increase officially went into effect in April. For instance, in May of 2023, there were 742,600 fast-food workers in the state; a year later, there were 743,300 workers. 
According to a release from Newsom’s office last week, since raising worker wages, every month this year has seen consistent fast food job gains, and nearly each month has seen more jobs than the same month last year.
“What’s good for workers is good for business, and as California’s fast food industry continues booming every single month our workers are finally getting the pay they deserve,” Newsom said in a written statement. “Despite those who pedaled lies about how this would doom the industry, California’s economy and workers are again proving them wrong.”

According to data released by the FBI, crime in general declined significantly in the third quarter of 2023 relative to the same period in 2022. Violent crime was down 8%, property crime down 6% and murder more than 15%. But you wouldn't know it if you watched one especially dishonest cable news channel. Here's The Washington Post:
Since crime began to surge during the pandemic, cable-news coverage of crime increased. But on Fox News in particular, coverage was consistently higher during the Biden administration relative to the first three years of Donald Trump’s presidency.
As crime peaked in October 2022, Fox News was three times more likely than CNN to mention crime in any 15-second block of airtime. Even with crime rates dropping, the Murdoch propaganda channel continues to yammer on about an epidemic of murders, assaults and drug smuggling committed by (of course) immigrants and urban minorities. But there's one kind of crime that actually is growing and which Fox is perfectly happy to ignore. It's called wage theft.
This is the practice of employers purposely failing to pay workers the full amount to which they are legally entitled. For example, by simply refusing to pay promised wages, paying less than legally mandated minimums, failing to pay for all hours worked, or not paying overtime premiums. And it directly harms millions of US workers every year. In fact, in 2015 the Economic Policy Institute reported that over $50 billion a year was stolen from workers nationwide — more than the cost of all robberies, burglaries and car thefts combined.
More recently, the Institute surveyed the ten most populous states in the nation and found that each year 2.4 million workers were paid less than the applicable minimum wage in their state. On average, these low-wage workers were cheated out of $64 a week, or about $3,300 annually for year-round employees. And, naturally, it's young workers, women, people of color and immigrants who are more likely to be paid less than the legal minimum.
So what's being done about this problem? Not much. Wage theft prevention bills were introduced in Congress in 2022 and 2023, with House Republicans blocking both from being passed. And, sure, there are state laws under which workers can bring suit. But CBS found that even when they win their cases, inconsistent enforcement means many victims are never paid a dime or are left waiting months and even years for a resolution. Yet somehow all this escapes the notice of the Fox right-wing outrage machine.
