Amritsar train tragedy: Probe gives clean chit to Navjot Singh Sidhu's wife
Tumblr media
CHANDIGARH: A magisterial probe into the Amritsar train tragedy in which around 60 people died, has apparently given a "clean chit" to Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was the chief guest at the Dussehra event. Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner B Purushartha-- appointed the special executive magistrate by the government to probe the accident-- indicted the son of a Congress councillor, who organised the event as well as officials of Amritsar district administration, municipal corporation, railways and local police, official sources said. The crowd was watching the burning of a Ravana effigy near Joda Phatak on October 19 when they were mowed down by a passing train. A 300-page report of magisterial probe into the accident was submitted to the Punjab Home Secretary last month. The report stressed that Saurabh Mithu Madan, son of the Congress councillor and a close aide of the Sidhus, should have ensured safety of people at the venue, official sources said. The report also blamed Amritsar administration and municipality officials over safety measures and permission given for holding the event. The role of railways also came under the scanner for giving the green signal to a fast train despite the presence of a huge crowd on the tracks. The Home department has put up the file pertaining to the report before Chief Minister Amarinder Singh for further action. Notably, an inquiry conducted by the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety into this incident had blamed "negligence" of people, standing on the railway track, for the tragic incident. Meanwhile, Additional Director General of Police (Railways) Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota is conducting a separate inquiry into the accident to fix responsibility. The statements of over 150 people including railway officials and Navjot Kaur Sidhu were recorded by Purushartha, while Navjot Singh Sidhu, who had questioned the Railways for giving clean chit to loco-pilot of the train, had submitted his statement in writing. Opposition Akali Dal had earlier rejected the institution of the magisterial probe and sought registration of case against Navjot Kaur Sidhu and the event organiser, claiming that she allegedly left the venue without bothering about the victims. Amritsar (Punjab), Dec 6 (ANI):Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife Navjot Kaur, on Thursday, were given a clean chit in a magisterial inquiry into the Amritsar train tragedy, which left 60 people dead after a speeding train ran over revellers who were standing on tracks to watch the burning of Ravana effigy on Dussehra in October. The probe was conducted by the Punjab government and the report was submitted to Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh who gave the clean chit to the couple, stating that they were not present in the Dussehra event when the mishap happened. In an exclusive interview with ANI, after being cleared in the inquiry, Navjot Kaur Sidhu said that the accusations were politically motivated. "If I am called to attend an event and an incident takes place there, then how am I responsible for it? These are attempts to malign the name of the Sidhu family. There is a dire need to make a law in India that before attending any event the chief guest must send its team to the spot and must see if something wrong is happening. In Ludhiana too, people celebrated Dussehra on railway tracks as there was no space inside the city but the action was not taken against the authorities," she said. The accident took place on October 19 at the Dhobi Ghat ground in Choura Bazar near Jhoda Phatak area in Amritsar after a train crushed a crowd that had spilled onto railway tracks while watching the burning of effigies on Dussehra. Immediately after the incident, Kaur reiterated that she was innocent, stating that "the effigy of Ravana was burnt and I had just left the site when the incident happened. Priority is to get the injured treated. Dussehra celebrations are held there every year. People who are doing politics over this incident should be ashamed." The magisterial inquiry under the Divisional Commissioner of Jalandhar was ordered by Punjab Chief Minister to ascertain the cause of the accident. (ANI)

via Today Bharat nbsp; Nearly 150 people, many watching the burning of effigies or recording the event on their mobile phones, were mowed down by the trainThe Punjab and Railway Police on Saturday questioned the driver of a train that crushed at least 61 people to death here while they were watching the burning of a Ravana effigy from a railway track. Punjab Police officials said that the DMU (diesel multiple unit) driver had been detained at the Ludhiana railway station and was being questioned regarding the incident that took place on Friday night at the Jora Phatak near Dhobi Ghat within Amritsar city. Sources said that the driver claimed that he was given green signal and all clear and had no idea that hundreds of people were standing on the tracks when the train crossed the area. No action has so far been initiated against the organisers, who are leaders of the ruling Congress in Punjab, of the Dusshera event. Police sources said that the organisers had gone underground. Railway officials were also gathering information from the railway linemen posted along the tracks near the Jora Phatak area who failed to inform the DMU driver regarding the presence of over 700 people on the railway tracks who were watching the burning of the Ravan and other effigies during Dusshera celebrations. As the Ravan and other effigies went up in flames with the deafening noise of bursting fire crackers, the people standing on the live railway tracks did not realise that a speeding train was approaching. Nearly 150 people, most of who were watching the burning of effigies or were recording the event on their mobile phones, were mowed down by the train. The disaster was over in 10-15 seconds, people at the spot said. Union Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha visited the accident spot late on Friday night. Sinha said that the incident was being probed and that the tragedy was unfortunate. Railway authorities in Amritsar and in New Delhi defended themselves saying that they had not been informed about the Dusshera event at that spot and the local police did not prevent the people from coming on the live and busy railway tracks. Meanwhile, senior political figures including Punjab Governor VP Singh Badnore and Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, visited the injured in hospitals in Amritsar on Saturday. Badnore arrived early on Saturday and met the injured at the Guru Nanak Dev government hospital. "This is a big tragedy. The doctors here are doing a good job in trying to save people," Badnore, who rushed from Chandigarh, told the media. State Education Minister and Amritsar legislator O.P. Soni was also present during the Governor's visit. Sidhu arrived at the hospital on Saturday morning accompanied by hordes of security personnel and officials. Sidhu, whose wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu was the chief guest at the Dusshera festival function where the tragedy took place, refused to talk to the media. Sidhu met the injured and their families in the hospital and assured all possible help from the government and the local administration. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh is also expected to arrive later on Saturday and meet the families of victims. Amarinder had on Friday night announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to those who died in the incident

In a tragic turn of events, a man who essayed the role of Ravana at a Ramlila event in the city was among those killed when a train mowed down Dussehra revellers on Friday evening. Dalbir Singh’s distraught mother, Swaran Kaur, told News18 that her son was a regular participant in Ramlila plays, but this was the first time he had played the demon king. “My son was playing Ravana’s role for the first time. He always used to act in Ramlila and had earlier played Hanuman, Ram Chandra and Laxman’s role. For yesterday’s function, Dalbir invited everyone,” she said. Demanding justice for Dalbir, she said the government must give his widow a job. “I urge the government to provide a job to my daughter-in law. She also has an 8-month old baby… At the time of elections, parties come to us to seek help. We have also always helped them and accompanied them door to door. Now, I want justice for my son,” she said.Dalbir’s brother Balbir said he died while trying to help others. “We had gone to celebrate Dussehra and Dalbir had gone to take his trophy (for playing Ravana). After he took his trophy, he saw the train coming and went to help people. He dragged around seven to eight people from coming under the train and accidentally his foot got stuck there. The train ran over him,” he said. “He was the sole breadwinner of this family. The government should think about his eight-month-old daughter and wife.”At least 58 people, including women and children, were killed when a local train ran over a crowd sitting on the track and watching a Ravana effigy burn during Dussehra celebrations. The role of train driver, railway officials and local authorities, who gave permission for holding of the event close to the railway tracks, is being probed, police officials said.Scores of people were roaming on the railway tracks on Saturday morning to see the accident spot, with the police and local authorities failing to even cordon off the area.Eyewitnesses said the victims were either watching the burning of Ravana or were recording the event on their mobile.Over 700 people were watching the huge Ravana effigy going up in flames amid exploding crackers at the Jora Phatak near Dhobi Ghat within Amritsar city when the Jalandhar-Amritsar DMU passenger train coming to Amritsar from Hoshiarpur came hurtling down around 7 pm. It took just about 10-15 seconds for the train to pass — and leave behind a heap of crushed and dismembered bodies.People standing on the tracks did not realise that the train was approaching fast due to the noise of the firecrackers during the burning effigy. Some locals blamed Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu’s wife Navjot Kaur, who was the chief guest at the celebrations, saying her late arrival delayed the burning of the effigy by more than half an hour. The state government has declared a state mourning on Saturday. All offices and educational institutions will remain closed as a mark of respect to those dying in the train tragedy. The News 18 : 20th. Oct,18
