Plain Jane (Attribute Theft, BE, Altification)

She hated that her parents named her Jane. They didn't know they were signing her up for torture. They didn't know Jane Gray would grown into an exceptionally plain young woman, turning the name she grew up with since childhood into the perfect insult. Plain Jane. Even her nickname couldn't be unique.

The eighteen-year-old finished the gauntlet of social torment that was high school and she didn't see how college was going to be any better. With her dishwater brown hair, stick-like figure, lower-middle class upbringing, and total lack of style, Jane was overlooked at best and teased at worst.

There was a big senior bonfire at the beach for graduates to celebrate their last summer before going off to college and jobs, and for some reason, Jane let her friend Danielle drag her out for one last hurrah.

When she got to the beach, everyone was having fun and barely noticed her arrival. She went to find Dani, but before she could, her eye was drawn to a gold necklace nestled in the cool sand. It had three gold moon charms of different phases, each seemingly missing a stone that should be set in it.

Jane considered looking for the owner of the necklace, but everyone was too busy to give her the time of day anyway, right? Screw it, she deserved one nice thing tonight.

She fastened the necklace around her neck as Dani, one of her only friends at school, found her. She handed Jane a drink so they could reflect on graduation and look ahead to college, an experience Jane still wasn't optimistic about.

"You're being too hard on yourself, Jane. Besides, college is going to be the perfect time to reinvent yourself."

Everyone always said that. But that was easy for Dani to say; she never had a problem standing out. She grew out of a goth look and attitude over the years, but that just left her as some kind of alt rock goddess, with her dyed hair and a collection of tattoos Jane's parents never would have signed off on at such a young age. Even her style was full of bold blacks and vibrant neons that Jane just could never pull off.

Jane wished she could be half as exciting as Dani while Dani seemed drawn to stare at her friend's new accessory. "Woah, that's a really cool necklace. Is it... um... new?"

Dani looked dizzy, her eyes starting to glaze over. "Dani? Dan—woah." The sudden wave of dizziness passed on to Jane, but it wasn't the only thing.

She felt the ripple of goosebumps across her skin as art pieces etched themselves in ink, each tattoo flooding her head with memories of tattoo parlors and songs that inspired them. It wasn't the kind of music Jane listened to, except... well, it was, right? Her and Dani traded songs and bands, sneaking out to underground concerts throughout high school. Dani was even the one to dye Jane's hair a vibrant blue before graduation.

When the sudden wave of memories and pleasure associated with her tattoos subsided, Jane finally looked herself over, realizing she didn't imagine the change. She started to say something to Dani before looking her over again.

She had fewer tattoos and piercings; if Jane had to guess, she had lost about as many tattoos as Jane gained. What's more, her blue hair was now black with a few blue streaks. She was still gorgeous though, which was why Jane was dating her.

Wait. What?

Jane was always your typical straight girl, but that's not what her memories were telling her, and it certainly wasn't what her body thought. All those nights sneaking out weren't just to go to parties. Dani and Jane had their queer awakenings around the same time, and who better to explore that with then your punk rock bestie?

Dani finally came to, seemingly unaware of what changed or the features Jane... well, stole. Unintentionally, but that was absolutely what happened. "Want to get out of here and...?" Dani just grinned.

Jane felt the sudden warmth in her cheeks and... other places. "Yeah, let's—wait. Er, sorry, but not just yet. I... want to go around and talk to a few people first?"

Dani stared at her girlfriend blankly. "...You do?"

Jane laughed weakly, coming up with a lame excuse of wanting to end things on good terms before leaving her hometown in the Fall. Dani accepted the excuse with a kiss and left Jane alone to inspect her necklace.

As expected, this had to be involved somehow. The crescent moon charm had a new sapphire set in it, leaving her with two gemless moons. Assuming she knew what that meant now...

Jane wandered the periphery of the party, looking girls from her graduating class over. She felt a little guilty for what she took from Dani, but she didn't have the same apprehensions about the girls who spent the years ignoring her.

Eventually, she spotted Lily. Everyone knew she was a social butterfly and a huge flirt, and she had the look to back it up. She had the hips, she had the ass, and as every guy on the beach could tell you, she had a perfect pair of breasts. She even had a pretty face to match, proving fate played favorites.

But fate wasn't in charge tonight. "Hey Lily! Good luck next year. Got any plans?"

The redhead looked away from the two guys chatting her up, confused by the introvert's sudden friendliness. "Hey. Um, Jane, right? Thanks! I've got a job lined up, so... er... sorry, that's just a really nice... necklace?"

No one around them seemed to notice, but Lily and Jane were falling into the same daze she put Dani under before as their realities swapped a few key details around.

There was a sudden spark in Jane's heart. Something feisty. She was always an awkward, quiet kid, but that was all over. She was the one who made herself the life of the party wherever she went. She could feel it on her tongue; flirtation was like a second language Jane was fluent in.

Jane's beanpole figure filled out, her hips flaring to accommodate a new bubble butt. Her flat chest swelled, not quite to the perfectly shaped DDs Lily has... had, but to a size where she could feel them weighing on her chest. Lily was never actively antagonistic to Jane, so she was willing to leave her some gentle curves and some perky A cups.

But she did take all she could from that stunning face. Soft freckles, high cheek bones, full lips, and some fuck-me eyes that could make a man unload his wallet.

Which was what made Jane realize what else she took: the new job Lily had lined up. Jane's awkward, unimpressive body was now made to dance and show off, and that meant she was excited for the chance to strip her way through college for some spending money. She even stole Lily's stage name, Lulu. (It wasn't Lily at her most creative, but now it wasn't Lily's at all, so that was fine.)

Lily finally came to, finishing her inspection of the new ruby in Jane's half-moon charm. Her face was so bland now, like a stock character made to fill in the background of a video game. When Jane smiled and excused herself, Lily looked around, unsure of what to do now. The poor thing would acclimate to her new social anxiety in time, and in time, Jane would adjust to the guys who kept offering her drinks.

With one charm left, Jane had an idea of who she'd use it on, but the night was young. She spent some time dancing and teasing guys from her class, reveling in the attention she lacked in her old life. This was almost perfect.

But perfection was Melody Morgan.

"Jane? No fucking way. That can't be Plain Jane."

Interrupting Jane's dancing, a blonde in a teeny bikini glared at her. Melody was your classic rich bitch, with the best toys, the most popular boyfriend, and a pair of fake tits bought by daddy as a graduation gift to add on to her natural beauty. All those blessings and she still chose to spend the last four years tormenting Jane.

The guy Jane was dancing with, Melody's boyfriend, Tristan, looked at her in confusion. "Plain Jane? Are you feeling okay, babe?"

Jane blinked, realizing what had happened. The charm necklace was Melody's. And with it, there came the realization that Melody's nice things weren't blessings; they were magic.

The realization dawned on her: what if this wasn't the first time Melody used magic to steal the luster from other girls?

"You little twerp. I'm going to turn you into the toad you are, then I'll take my... my neck..."

Melody was so arrogant, she didn't realize she was staring into the charms, falling under the power of a very pissed off Jane.

There was an element of intent with stealing from people, Jane realized. She wanted half of what made Dani so bold. She wanted most of Lily's beauty and allure.

But she wanted everything from Melody. The bitch didn't deserve any of it.

She didn't focus on herself because she wanted to watch Melody. She watched her thighs thin out and her curves flatten. The luster of her blonde hair went dull. The tact Jane used with Lily was gone as every bit of tit the bitch had, real or synthetic, dissolved until Melody's chest was as flat as the rest of her.

Looks weren't all Melody didn't deserve. Memories started vanishing, from her honors classes to her active dating history to the witchy rituals her aunt taught her when she came of age. She looked around at the beach as all the faces became strangers to the witch who was once the most popular girl in her class.

Eventually, the plain, uneducated, outsider came to her senses, looking around only to realize everyone on the beach was acting like she didn't exist. The only person who seemed amused by her was an absolute goddess rocking tattoos and long, shiny blue hair.

The guy behind the bluette bombshell had his hands all over her, disregarding the stick-figure girl. "Who's this, babe?"

The blue-haired witch grinned wickedly, filled with the elitist attitude she stole from a top mean girl. She'd stolen her rival's body, mind, and boyfriend. Dani wasn't a stickler for monogamy, and really, didn't she deserve a boyfriend and a girlfriend?

But that wasn't the only thing she took from her former bully. "I don't know, Tristan. Hey bitch, what's your name?"

It took the mundane young woman a second to even remember. "Oh, um. Jane Morgan?"

That made Jane, now Melody laugh. "Oh, Plain Jane! I knew her once, but she just sort of fell off the face of the Earth. Glad to see you've been up to nothing interesting, but this is actually a closed party."

Melody Gray fiddled with her necklace, the full moon charm now adorned with a brilliant diamond to complete her set. It sat above an almost cartoonishly large chest. Maybe she went a bit overboard, but daddy promised her a boob job, and Melody loved when every guy and girl on the beach couldn't help but stare.

The queen bee of the beach sighed, officially done with Jane. She wasn't a bully anymore; she wasn't anything. She was insignificant, and that was enough for Melody. "Run off and do... well, who cares, right?"

Jane ran off with tears in her eyes, grappling with a sense of loss she couldn't quite explain as she ran off to her unremarkable life. Melody, meanwhile, reveled in her boyfriend groping her as her new memories as the popular it girl and richest witch in town replaced a much less interesting life she was happy to leave behind.

Sims In Bloom POLL: Help! Bridgette Landgraab Needs Style

This budding young fashionista and social butterfly needs a wardrobe to wow everyone around her - and with her privilege, Ash's other little sister will be able to rock any style she wants!

Problem is, I don't even know where to begin! So today's post is to get opinions on how to do this fashion-forward sim justice. So far she hasn't shown any Landgraab tendencies other than adherence to fashion - what she utterly lacks in physical attributes from her mother might be because she's destined to inherit Miko's good trait, instead! We can always hope!

Polished and preppy seem very Landgraab, but Miko Ojo is her mother, and that's more of a fashion wildcard! Should I mix and match? I've left the hair she aged up with for now, but I'm open to any thoughts or suggestions to change it all up! (If you read the alt-text for all the outfits you can laugh at me trying to describe fashion lolol.)

Also, should I leave her choices regarding the styles that don't win up to fate or make her dislike them all?? Which would be more fun? I love having more traits even if I don't know how to make fashionable sims, and this can be a learning experience for my CAS-lazy self!

It was obviously bedding, but whatever it was that slept here wasn’t present then. So you decided to nab a couple of the large gemstones before making a hasty exit. Unknown to you the maker of the nest had seen you enter his home and was silently stalking you as you approached his bedding. And he was thrilled that his scent marking had led you into his home and was even more excited when he saw you touch the stones he had collected to attract a mate, it was clearly an indication that you were receptive to being with him. Hi! Hope you are having a nice weekend 💙 So, first of all, I know there's been talk about opposites attracting, but I've finally decided on the personality and traits for my Zealot MC, so the Heretic doesn't get lonely, and. well, the Zealot ended up having a white bond with Serax and gold with Val... On unbound... Idk if with such a gap Serax is jealous over the ~vibes~ he's observing, but I assume he is. (Also I LOVED the final scene for non-weaver Zealot. The one with the bath kiss. That's probably my fav scene with Val out of all I have seen so far 🤌) Now for the questerinos: which channel of perception is the dominant one for each of the boys, i.e. sight, touch, smell?.. Also, do you have a writing\inspo playlist? Or character\lore themed playlist?

Valdricht is a tough one because he's very attuned to his sixth sense, loosely tied to what he refers to as aevyrvenaeth, or his higher self. It's something that will take me several scenes to unpack in a way that readers can understand, but the best way I can describe it is have you ever randomly thought of someone just before they called you out of the blue, or had the sense that something was very wrong, only to find out that a loved one had been hurt? It's almost like there's a level of existence that we can sometimes brush up against, but not quite harness. Valdricht is very tapped into that realm and much of his perception flows through that sense. If you read his alt POV scene on Itch, you'll notice that he perceives Serax's mental state in colors prior to attributing said colors to emotions. It's something we'll explore a lot more in his future scenes and also in his conversations with the MC, as she will also be able to tap into this ability.

Serax is much more grounded. He tends to make snap judgements based on sights and smells, but is also quite tactile. I'd say that touch is his strongest medium of perception, and a big reason he's often motivated by carnal pleasures.

I have a writing playlist but I'm so old and like 90% of the audience is Gen Z, they'd probably be bewildered by choices. That said, I've been thinking of adding a "Song of the Night" to my release posts, giving readers a song I think most reflects the mood of each night. Song suggestions always welcome, I love new music.

Probably my #1 song for the early arc of both MCs is "Home" by Gabrielle Alpin. It really beautifully encapsulates the arc of feeling like you don't belong in the place of your birth, then breaking away from what you knew and building a new life, while being cognizant that you'll always carry pieces of your beginning with you.

"From Eden" by Hozier could have been written for Val. The narrative of a wicked sinner preying on a wholesome person because they remind him of the innocence he lost a long time ago...shivers. Serax is more complicated, I feel like if I threw out songs for him readers would be bewildered because no one knows Serax yet despite the myriad hard opinions about him (:

Chat Pile — Cool World (The Flenser)

Where’s the money to help victims of Helene? What’s going on with China’s infringement of Nepali borders? Which tech thought leader has rolled out a visionary new future for generative AI that also lays off the maximum number of staff this week? Is your mayor in charge? (Are you sure?) How outdated is the number of the latest Godspeed You! Black Emperor record? Why do people have to live outside when there are buildings all around us?

That’s not even trying to read much past A1. It’s a sick, sad world out there — out here, really — and the constant escalating tenor is, at this point, little more than a brutally myopic capitalist beatdown … so, what better way to retaliate than by doubling down, wallowing in the byproduct of lead-zinc mining, huffing the chat and piling on the pressure? What better way to live than by admitting from the outset we’re subhuman, dogs with trash mouths, veins full of garbage, destroyed noses? What better equalizer than a roaring statement of intent that everyone bleeds?

That’s the approach the ironically titled Cool World takes. When we last left Oklahoma City’s newly favorite sons of noise, the members of Chat Pile were, in Jonathan Shaw’s astute assessment, still figuring out “how close to the bone of the Real they want their music to cut, and how best to achieve that.” A belated alt-country movie soundtrack, a layover split with brothers in Christ Nerver and a whole lot of touring (featuring a whole lot of movie-related stage banter) has given the quartet some time to think through that response, the next move and what to do to appropriately address what they’re seeing all around us. The results are two fistfuls of noise-rock at least as potent lyrically as anything on God’s Country and arguably harder musically, for a few reasons.

“I Am Dog Now” eases in on what sounds like a gentle, mind-expanding cosmic wave before crashing to life with the sort of acerbic post-hardcore one might’ve come to expect from the band. “You take / You fucking take,” vocalist Raygun Busch growls with manic ferocity to open proceedings, and immediately you’re struck by how much more forceful it sounds. Busch eases off a little to sing on “Shame,” but that only amplifies the notion that all of this sounds bigger; despite the chords and the words, there’s a polish here.

Part of that must be attributed to the band’s willingness to expand its scope beyond hardcore’s narrow tropes, but the mixing job by Uniform’s Ben Greenberg (who’s also done work for Metz, Algiers and Drab Majesty) might also be worth mentioning. Busch’s vocals come through clearly most of the time, Cap’n Ron’s drums crash fabulously, Luther Manhole’s licks routinely liven up verses and choruses where you wouldn’t expect, and bassist Stin’s chugs recall everything from Big Black to Cows to nü-metal’s finer moments to bands like STNNNG and Young Widows to Sepultura, a band Chat Pile once covered. A lot of it’s the tight songwriting, but it’s enhanced by the production job (which, admittedly, might not be for everyone).

Nobody’s missing The Jesus Lizard in 2024 on account of Rack, but it’s heartening to hear their acolytes are out here absorbing the same squalid lessons and coughing them back up in bile-laden disgust. It’s easy to see “Frownland” as the less defeated inverse of TV Priest’s “Sunland” (“After all, it’s just a pointless collapsing star”); it’s easy to imagine just how “funny” “Funny Man” is; it’s easy to get how a band like this could end with a song called “No Way Out” that opens with the judgment that from the moment you were born, it was over. “And the world was quaking open / With all our fathers smiling / And the statues rose high above us / And God remained silent,” says Busch on “Shame.” Like the mix, it doesn’t take much to hear what’s in the message: There’s no salvation down here from our dads; there’s no salvation up there from The Father, either.

Where, then, do we turn? Though never spelled out, Chat Pile’s bleak worldview implies the answer by uniting anyone who can empathize with such visceral emotions, by those in the pit lashing out furiously and the rest of those in the room nodding along in agreement to “Milk of Human Kindness.” As it always was, we must turn to each other. Cold World is one suggested soundtrack to the endurance of the human spirit in spite of the bleeding. Escalate accordingly.

The Dubiously Needed, Unnecessarily Extensive Magia Record Stat Sheet Guide (Masterpost)

Many of you know that I adore OCs. I have made plenty myself and adore seeing those from others. Yes, even the self-inserts. All of them are good. Yes. If it makes you happy, it is good!

One of my favorite activities with Madoka OCs in particular is to envision them as characters in Magia Record. There’s an immersive quality to it that I simply can’t get enough of.

However…you can’t deny that getting the information for these “stat sheets” is difficult. Even the English patches of Magia Record keep the gameplay untranslated, so it’s easy to get mixed up on mechanics, status effects...names. Like, do you guys remember when Darkness was called “Blind”? Man I miss NA…

Because of this, I wanted to create a guide! This guide is for those who want to make stat sheets for their Madoka OCs as if they were Magia Record characters. This is not going to give any hard rules - no “you MUST do this”. I’m simply going to tell you what I know, and what patterns I see in the gameplay. What advice you take and what you interpret is completely up to you! After all, the fun part of making OCs is putting your own spin on things. 

I will be writing this as if you know how to play Magia Record already. I won’t be explaining every single term. If you need further guidance, I would highly recommend the Magia Record English Wiki. I referenced their definitions and percentages for most of this guide. It’s a helpful resource for understanding the game mechanics. 

To keep this from breaking the word limit, I’m going to split this guide into a multi-post series. Each post will explain one factor of this stat sheet, with examples and such. This will be the masterpost. All future posts will be linked below!

(Note: I’m going to be using “magical girl” as an umbrella term in this guide, since it’s the same term used in the anime and game. However, nothing here is specifically gender-exclusive. I couldn’t find a gender-neutral term I was happy with, so if you have any suggestions, let me know and I’ll make an edit in post.

Also, please do not hesitate to correct me if anything in this guide is incorrect. I cannot read Japanese and am mostly using the English Wiki and prior game knowledge as my resource...so I would honestly not be surprised if I got something wrong. I'll try to keep this guide updated with any corrections.)

Hey! It’s great that you’re trying to use alt-text to be inclusive! But what you have typed in as alt text just says: “types of fall people”.

That doesn’t actually let anyone who needs alt text know what’s in the image. :(

They don’t get to know that the image contains six characters, what those characters look like, or what attributes you’ve given them.

So when you then ask ‘which one are you?’ How are they supposed to answer?

A better alt text here would be something like ‘an illustration of six cute characters representing different types of fall people. The first is a hedgehog holding a cup of tea representing people who like apple picking, baking cinnamon buns and hot drinks. The second is a chick sitting in a pumpkin who likes pumpkin lattes, pumpkin patch, and pumpkin everything. The third is a cat in boots who misses summer, is sad it’s getting darker, but who at least has cute boots. The fourth is a happy bunny jumping around in leaves who loves the fall air, crunching leaves, and fall colours. The fifth is a penguin in a giant jumper who likes sweater weather, lighting candles, and being cozy. The sixth is an excited ghost with a bucket of treats who is ready for Halloween, is spooky all month, and for whom this is the favourite time of the year.’

Then people who need to use alt text have the same access to the information needed to answer your question as everyone else!
