It's a byproduct of marvel circa 2004 reorientating the comics in order to
a) push the brands they still owned (hence you got New Avengers and the Marvel universe swiftly became Avengers centric well before even 2010)
And
B) create 'first drafts' for the phase 1 films. The Ultimates was a first draft of the Avengers movie they hoped to someday make. Extremists updated Tony's origin so they could use that for Iron Man 1. Straczynski did a modernisolation of Thor because they didn't think classic Shakespearean Thor would sell on film. In 2006 they started pushing Carol Danvers because the film rights to their actually popular female heroes were tied up with Fox and the X-Men.
Possibly, this was also why more 'realistic' artwork (like Steve Mcniven) began becoming the norm and why stories became overwhelmingly 6-12 parters
This was all back when Bendis was driving the direction of the marvel universe and Quesada was EIC. Lo and behold, both were part of the creative committee than ran Marvel studios pre-phase 3.
Marvel were priming the comics ahead of time to fuel their pie in the sky dreams of the MCU all the way back in the early 2000s.

well, at least they're admitting it after they've been lowkey/highkey doing this for the past ten years or so already, i guess —
but i hate this. i hate this so much.
marvel editorial now truly only sees comics as a pipeline for a franchise machine and not as stories for their own sake, and this has been hurting, and will continue to hurt, comics. as a comics fan, i'm angry and frustrated. comics are a beautiful medium, with their own unique way of telling stories, and they don't just exist as an IP farm. or, they shouldn't, but the mcu has forced its way into even that.
