#Mosquito Windows Shutter Doors

I think part of the reason europe doesn't have screens, might be that europe used to have shutters (lots of people don't know the uk had shutters too, because ours were internal, & they hid in the big, deep, window frames in fancy houses - or they weren't attached at all & you just picked them up & slotted them into place). Now bugs will get in through the gaps in shutters, but they do keep most of them out. Houses (that didn't belong to the super-rich) also used to have smaller windows to keep the heat in & the cold out (which also helps keep bugs & heat out). And, of course, early glazed windows were fixed pane.
(We also used to hang curtains round our beds. Which are even better than a mosquito net! But fabric pre-industrialisation was expensive, you certainly wouldn't cut it up & stick it in the window where it could be damaged by all the weather!)
But the US didn't have that many trees to make shutters (&/or the tools to craft them, since there were plenty of log cabins, they were just...logs), & glass is heavy & fragile, making it difficult to transport, so lightweight fabric screens make total sense. Especially as it's hot & humid so you'd rather have big windows & an open door instead of small, insulating ones. And then when you do get glass, it just makes sense to combine the two. (Whereas shutters' main purpose is insulation, which the glass alone does fine.)
I think another factor may also be the fact europe has been in a period of diminishing ecological bounty for several hundred years, lack of bugs being a prime marker for this, so as glass became more & more available there were almost certainly fewer & fewer bugs (whereas in the US european methods hadn't had as much time to do their damage, so there were almost certainly more bugs).
We did historically make screens for our food, for eating outside in the summer!
Everywhere really should have screens, though. (Even if they are a pain to make work with certain types of window - though to be fair those types of window are often just a pain generally).
I continue to run into people that are confused as to why Americans have screens on our windows and it’s really quite simple.

How To Maintain And Clean Your Roll Fly Screen For Maximum Efficiency
Tumblr media
Roll fly screens are an effective way to keep insects and other unwanted pests out of your home. They can also help improve air ventilation while keeping the interior of your house cool during summer. But like any other window or door screening, roll-fly screens need regular maintenance in order to stay efficient and last longer. Here is a guide on how you can maintain and clean your roll fly screen for maximum efficiency:
Check For Damage
Before cleaning the roll fly screen, it's important to check for any damage that may have occurred over time. Inspect all areas of the screen, such as its mesh material, frame, corners and joints, for signs of wear or tear. If you find any broken pieces or holes in the mesh material, then it's best to replace them with new parts instead of attempting repairs yourself. This will ensure that your roll fly screen stays intact and works properly after cleaning.
Remove Dust And Debris
Dust particles often accumulate on both sides of the roll-up screen, which can reduce its effectiveness if not removed regularly. To clean these particles off, use a vacuum cleaner with soft brush attachments so that you don't damage the mesh material when vacuuming near it. You may also want to wipe down both sides of the mesh with a damp cloth in order to remove dirt or stubborn debris from hard-to-reach places, such as crevices between frames or edges along joints where dust tends to collect more easily than in other areas.
Clean With Soap & Water Solution
After removing visible dirt, dust particles and debris from both sides of the rolling mosquito net, mix some liquid detergent into warm water until suds begin forming at the top surface before submerging a microfiber cloth into this solution. Gently scrub both side surfaces using this cloth but avoid putting too much pressure onto either side since doing so could cause further damage by stretching out fibres from within the fabric matrix. Once finished rinsing off soap residue using clear running water, then let dry completely under direct sunlight before reinstalling back onto the same window/door location.
Lubricate Moving Parts
Once done cleaning the entire unit, including moving parts (e.g. locks mechanism), apply a few drops of lubricating oil around hinges joints so that they remain working smoothly without getting stuck when opening/closing roller shutters. Especially during hot, humid summers, rust formation is more likely due to corrosion caused by moisture buildup inside metal components.
Reinstall Roll Fly Screen Properly
Before reinstalling the roll fly screen, make sure that both sides have been cleaned and dried off completely, then follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer when attaching them back onto the window/door frame. Ensure that joints are securely locked into place using screws or other fastenings before testing out functionality, such as the opening/closing mechanism works without any problems – if not, then repeat the lubrication step until satisfied.
Conclusion
Roll fly screens can be an effective way to keep pests out of your home while also improving air ventilation and temperature regulation during the hot summer months. It's important to maintain them regularly to ensure maximum efficiency, which includes checking for damage, removing dust & debris, cleaning with soap & water solution, lubricating moving parts as well as reinstalling properly back onto the original location. Following these steps will help you extend your roll fly screen's life expectancy while ensuring they continue working all year round efficiently.

The Ultimate Guide to Security Screens in Brisbane: Protecting Your Home with Style
Tumblr media
When it comes to protecting your home or business, security should always be a priority. In Brisbane, where the weather can vary from scorching heat to heavy rain, having a reliable security system is essential. One of the best solutions for enhancing your home’s security without sacrificing style or comfort is the installation of security screens. In this guide, we’ll explore the benefits of security screens in Brisbane, why they’re an ideal choice for local homeowners, and how to choose the best security screens for your property.
What Are Security Screens?
Security screens are specialized mesh screens designed to provide a protective barrier for doors and windows. They are typically made from durable, high-tensile stainless steel or aluminum, offering both strength and resilience. Not only do they prevent intruders from breaking into your home, but they also allow for better airflow and natural light, helping to maintain the aesthetic and comfort of your living space.
Why Choose Security Screens in Brisbane?
1. Weather Durability
Brisbane’s climate can be tough on traditional screens, with intense heat, strong winds, and frequent storms. Security screens, however, are engineered to withstand harsh weather conditions, making them a long-lasting solution for homes in the area. Whether you’re looking to keep out the sun’s rays or protect your home from storms, security screens are built to last.
2. Enhanced Security
Security screens offer robust protection against intruders. The high-strength mesh and secure frame make it nearly impossible for burglars to break through. Many security screens in Brisbane are designed to meet strict Australian safety standards, offering peace of mind that your home is well-protected.
3. Improved Ventilation
Unlike traditional security solutions such as bars or shutters, security screens allow for ample airflow. This is especially important in Brisbane, where the weather can be hot and humid. With security screens, you can keep windows and doors open without worrying about security risks.
4. Increased Curb Appeal
Security doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style. Modern security screens come in a variety of designs, from sleek and minimalist to more decorative styles. You can choose a design that complements your home’s architecture, enhancing its aesthetic appeal while keeping it safe.
5. Pest Protection
In Brisbane, pests like insects and mosquitoes are a common problem, especially during the warmer months. Security screens act as a barrier against pests, allowing you to enjoy fresh air without the hassle of unwanted critters invading your home.
Types of Security Screens Available in Brisbane
When choosing security screens for your home, it's important to know the different types available to ensure you select the right one for your needs. Here are some popular options:
1. Invisi-Gard Security Screens
Invisi-Gard security screens are made from marine-grade stainless steel mesh, offering superior protection without compromising on visibility or airflow. They are ideal for homeowners in Brisbane who want the best combination of security and style.
2. Crimsafe Security Screens
Crimsafe is one of the most well-known brands in the security screen industry. Their screens feature a patented mesh design that provides exceptional security and durability. Crimsafe security screens are a great choice for Brisbane homes due to their weather resistance and ease of maintenance.
3. Aluminum Security Screens
Aluminum security screens are a cost-effective option that offers solid protection and durability. While they may not provide the same level of visibility as stainless steel mesh options, they are still a popular choice for many Brisbane residents.
4. Sliding and Hinged Security Screens
Depending on your home’s layout, you can choose between sliding or hinged security screens for doors and windows. Sliding screens are perfect for large glass doors, while hinged screens can be installed on any type of entryway.
How to Choose the Best Security Screens for Your Home in Brisbane
When selecting security screens for your home in Brisbane, there are a few factors to consider:
1. Material Quality
Ensure that the security screens you choose are made from high-quality materials such as stainless steel or aluminum. This will ensure they are strong enough to provide protection while being resistant to rust and corrosion.
2. Compliance with Australian Standards
It’s crucial to choose security screens that meet Australian safety standards. Look for products that are certified by the Australian Security Industry Association (ASIAL) or other reputable organizations.
3. Style and Design
Security screens are available in a range of styles and finishes, so take the time to choose a design that complements your home. Consider the color, frame style, and mesh pattern to ensure it blends seamlessly with your home’s architecture.
4. Professional Installation
For optimal security and performance, it’s essential to have your security screens professionally installed. Professional installers ensure that the screens are fitted securely and correctly, providing you with maximum protection.
5. Warranty and Support
Choose a provider that offers warranties and customer support. A reliable warranty ensures that if anything goes wrong with your security screens, you’ll be covered.
Conclusion
Security screens are an excellent investment for homeowners in Brisbane looking to enhance their property’s safety, ventilation, and aesthetic appeal. With options for every budget, style, and security need, installing quality security screens is one of the best ways to protect your home from intruders, pests, and harsh weather. Make sure to select screens that comply with Australian safety standards, and consider professional installation for the best results.
If you’re looking for reliable security screens in Brisbane, reach out to local experts who can help you choose the right solution for your home. Protect your family, your property, and your peace of mind today with security screens that deliver both security and style.

Why Crimsafe Security Screens in Brisbane Are the Best Investment for Home Security
Enhancing Home Security with Crimsafe Security Screens Brisbane
Home security is a top priority for homeowners, and investing in durable, high-quality protection is essential. One of the most effective solutions available today is Crimsafe security screens. Brisbane residents looking to enhance their home’s defense against break-ins, harsh weather, and pests will find these security screens an invaluable addition. Engineered for strength and durability, they provide an unmatched level of security without compromising on aesthetics or ventilation.
Tumblr media
The Unparalleled Strength of Crimsafe Security Screens Brisbane
Crimsafe security screens are constructed using high-tensile stainless steel mesh, which is tightly woven and held together by a patented screw-clamp system. This unique design makes them significantly stronger than traditional fly screens or security grilles. The reinforced structure can withstand strong impacts, making forced entry extremely difficult. Unlike conventional security screens that rely on weak aluminum framing, these security screens incorporate high-strength materials that offer superior resistance against cutting, kicking, and prying attempts.
Protection Against Break-Ins and Forced Entry
One of the primary reasons homeowners choose Crimsafe security screens in Brisbane is their ability to deter break-ins. The toughened mesh and tamper-resistant screws make it nearly impossible for intruders to gain access. These screens undergo rigorous testing, including dynamic impact assessments and knife shear resistance, proving their effectiveness in preventing unauthorized entry. With an increasing number of home invasions occurring across Brisbane, investing in these high-security screens provides peace of mind and protection for loved ones and valuables.
Superior Ventilation and Natural Light Without Compromising Safety
Unlike traditional security solutions such as bars or roller shutters, Crimsafe security screens allow fresh air and natural light to flow freely into a home. The mesh design facilitates superior airflow while maintaining a high level of security. Homeowners can enjoy a comfortable indoor environment without feeling confined or restricted. The ability to keep windows and doors open without worrying about security threats enhances both comfort and lifestyle, making these screens a practical addition to any Brisbane home.
Energy Efficiency and Climate Adaptability
Brisbane experiences warm and humid weather for most of the year, making energy efficiency a crucial consideration for homeowners. Crimsafe security screens help in regulating indoor temperatures by reducing heat transfer. The tightly woven mesh acts as a heat barrier, blocking a significant percentage of solar radiation and keeping interiors cooler. This feature reduces reliance on air conditioning, leading to lower energy costs. Additionally, these screens provide excellent insulation during colder months, helping to maintain a balanced indoor climate year-round.
Protection Against Extreme Weather Conditions
Queensland is known for its unpredictable weather, including severe storms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds. Crimsafe security screens are designed to withstand these extreme weather conditions, protecting homes from debris and wind-driven projectiles. The impact-resistant mesh prevents shattered glass during storms, minimizing damage and enhancing safety. Homeowners in Brisbane can rely on these screens as a robust solution to safeguard their properties against harsh environmental elements.
Keeping Insects and Pests at Bay
Brisbane’s warm climate attracts various insects and pests, including mosquitoes and flies, which can become a nuisance. Crimsafe security screens provide an effective barrier against unwanted insects without the need for chemical repellents or additional mesh screens. The finely woven design prevents even the smallest pests from entering, ensuring a comfortable and bug-free living space.
Enhancing Aesthetic Appeal and Property Value
While security is the primary function of Crimsafe security screens, they also enhance the overall aesthetics of a home. Unlike traditional security grilles that can appear bulky or unattractive, these screens have a sleek, modern design that blends seamlessly with any architectural style. Available in various colors and finishes, they complement different home exteriors, adding both functionality and visual appeal. Investing in high-quality security screens can also increase a property’s value, making it more attractive to potential buyers.
Easy Maintenance and Longevity
Another advantage of Crimsafe security screens in Brisbane is their low-maintenance nature. Unlike standard flyscreens that require frequent replacements, these screens are highly durable and resistant to corrosion. The stainless steel mesh is coated with a protective layer that prevents rust and deterioration, even in coastal environments. A simple cleaning routine with mild detergent and water is enough to keep them looking new for years. The longevity of these screens makes them a cost-effective investment for homeowners.
Versatility and Customization Options
Crimsafe security screens are available in a variety of styles and configurations to suit different needs. From hinged and sliding doors to window screens and patio enclosures, they can be customized to fit various openings in a home. Homeowners can choose from different frame colors and mesh styles to match their preferred aesthetic. Whether installing them in a residential or commercial setting, these screens provide versatile security solutions tailored to individual preferences.
Meeting Australian Safety Standards
Security screens should meet rigorous safety standards to ensure optimal protection. Crimsafe security screens comply with Australian safety regulations, including fire attenuation standards and impact resistance tests. The adherence to these strict guidelines guarantees that homeowners receive a top-quality product that delivers reliable security performance. Choosing a certified security screen ensures long-term safety and compliance with industry best practices.
Cost-Effective Home Security Investment
While the initial cost of Crimsafe security screens may be higher than standard alternatives, their long-term benefits make them a cost-effective investment. The durability, energy efficiency, and superior protection they offer contribute to savings on maintenance, utility bills, and potential property damage costs. Investing in high-quality security screens eliminates the need for additional security measures, making them a one-time investment with lasting returns.
A Smart Choice for Brisbane Homeowners
Crimsafe security screens in Brisbane provide a comprehensive security solution that goes beyond conventional barriers. Their superior strength, ventilation benefits, energy efficiency, and weather resistance make them the best choice for homeowners seeking long-term protection. By enhancing both security and aesthetics, these screens offer a practical and stylish solution that meets modern home security needs.
Final Thoughts
For homeowners looking to reinforce their property’s security, Crimsafe security screens in Brisbane present an excellent investment. Their innovative design, robust materials, and compliance with safety standards set them apart as a leading security solution. With benefits ranging from break-in prevention to weather resilience and energy efficiency, these security screens provide unparalleled protection and peace of mind. Choosing high-quality security solutions is essential for ensuring a safe and comfortable living environment, making Crimsafe security screens an ideal choice for Brisbane homes.

Note
can you do a scenario w/ avdol x reader where he walks into their room and sees her singing to their sleeping baby and watches them from the doorway as she's falling asleep herself? (for some reason the song that i kept imagining was lovely by billie and khalid)
Oooooooof Avdol Daddy got me feeling some type of way 😩 HELP
Tumblr media
“Come on bunny... we’ve been doing this for hours, bedtime now.”
“Mmppbbbt.”
He leaned against the door frame, watching you both cuddle in a nest of blankets and pillows, your little girl trying her very hardest to kick away the blankets while your hand ghosted over the roundness of her belly. He knew it to be warm, full of milk, and he could imagine the good clean smell of soap that permeated the baby’s skin as you nuzzled her brown cheeks. The room was dark, save for the lamplight from the living room that cast beams of light into the bedroom. Both of you were cuddled up in the bed you and Muhammad Avdol had shared for the past three years of your marriage, the bed pushed up against the wall where there was a single large window. Of course it was blocked off with wicker shutters and transparent mosquito netting to prevent the bugs from disturbing your rest, the corners of the wicker shutters flapping listlessly when they caught a breeze.
Yours was a fortune teller’s home. A simple home. Not much even for the eighties. No modern conveniences (you both could hardly afford a luxury like air conditioning, and you had to spend wisely), but it was a cozy home none the less now that there was a baby in the equation. You both made it work. Poor as you both were you never went hungry, the baby was always clean and happy, it was a good life.
“Nah uh... no more playing. Bedtime.” You told her, your voice stern yet laced with that sing song tone that suggested you needed sleep.
“Mah!” your daughter argued.
“Shhhh... we need to wind down now. Bedtime baby.”
Avdol chuckled. The baby didn’t want to listen. Instead she wriggled her fingers and her toes, twirling strands of dark curly hair and giggling at every little thing she could see. Sometimes Avdol wondered if his daughter could see the crimson bird that stood guard next to him, arms crossed and the vestiges of a smile on its beak as it watched its young nestling coo in delight. Your own Stand was draped across the windowsill, like a cat, yawning and dabbing the tears from its eyes with a corner of its veil. It’s twin fish tails, oceanic imitations of feet, curled as though they were parchment paper in a hot oven. A soothing whisper of a melody slipped passed her lips, cooing a tune for you to follow.
“Should I sing to the baby Queen?”
Queen of Cups sighed, waving her damp scarf over you and the baby for a refreshing drink of cool air. She continued to hum, a funny little tune she’d heard on the radio this morning as you fed the baby her breakfast.
“Alright. I’ll sing for you then baby.”
Your little girl shifted to look at you, the eyes of her father bright and glistening as you began to sing softly under your breath. Avdol looked on, his protective stance softening as you crooned to your moving baby. He made to join the two of you, letting several layers of clothes fall to the floor (he’d take care of them later). As you sang, Avdol continued to strip, removing his heavy jewelry and layers upon layers of clothes until he was suitably cool enough in his undergarments to join the two of you in the warmth of the blankets, even letting down his hair from its usual coif to tumble down his temples in messy black cascading curls. Devilishly handsome, with a knowing look on his face that could make anyone’s toes curl. You wouldn’t last long from the sound of your voice. By the way it lilted in and out of consciousness he knew you had maybe two minutes tops before you began to surrender to the exhaustion of dealing with a fussy baby and the searing desert heat, keeping house and doing all sorts of little necessities that was required for the care of a new infant.
Your Stand welcomed Magician’s red as he cuddled in close, joining in her spot in the windowsill. While your baby slowly started to succumb to your soothing voice, Avdol moved in on the other side of the bed, causing his daughter to turn and reach for him. Even though the simple act of seeing his smiling face renewed her energy, she was helpless when her father took a chubby brown hand in his, fingers dwarfing her palm as he let her soak up the warmth of his hand. Between Avdol’s heat and your slowly fading singing, the baby was like butter melting on warm toast, her eyes fluttering shut as she settled down into the blankets.
“She’s asleep now darling.” Avdol whispered to you.
“Mmm... good...” you murmured, “I can’t remember how the rest of the song goes.”
“Are you alright? Is it too hot?”
A very familiar snore from your Stand was his answer. Your eyes fluttered shut, mimicking Queen of Cups’ snore as your baby suddenly began to sound off. How he got any sleep, he didn’t know, but Avdol knew there was no other place on earth that he’d rather be right now.
The fortune teller was content. Content to be nested in bed with the two most dearest loves of his life.

Chapter 2
Tumblr media
Introduction: Whitney Goodwinson was planning on inheriting one of her deceased grandmother's properties, but not a little house off the coast of North Carolina.  As she struggles to meet new people, fix up her new property, deal with troublemaker JJ Maybank, and perfect her grandmother's infamous lemonade she might just find that the Outer Banks has more to offer than it seems.
Series Masterlist
L.A.X. was packed per usual. I let George, my family's chauffeur, know what gate to let me out at. My flight was leaving at 9:00 P.M. which sucked but at least I could sleep on the plane right? Wrong. I swear, why do people travel with children? After the 8-hour flight landed I looked for my driver and my luggage. Because of the late notice, I flew into an airport in Virginia and had to drive another hour to the dreaded Outer Banks. After packing up my bags and carry-on we were finally on the road. I absolutely cannot sleep in cars so I was awake the whole time fiddling with the keys to the house. Finally, after nine hours of traveling, we finally arrived at a cool 3 o’clock in the morning.
My mind was a little hazy, but what I first noticed was the blanked of humidity and the buzzing of mosquitoes. Also, the “shack” was more like a cottage which was a pleasant surprise. There stood the yellow house in the moonlight waiting for me to open up its doors. Did I mention it was yellow? Not like a vibrant highlighter yellow, but a pale yellow. The cottage was in a wide-open grassy space with tall trees surrounding the property. I could hear the sound of waves crashing on a shore which was a bonus, I’d have to check it out once I could keep my eyes open for more than 20 seconds.
The front of the house was symmetrical with a door in the middle and two shutter windows on either side. There were dead flowers in the plant boxes underneath the window and cobwebs on the door handle. The driver, Paul, helped me bring my luggage into the cottage. I unlocked the door and it led into the living room, on the right, there was a mud closet and the left opened into a large living room. Wow for an older woman the home had a very modern look. The living room had sleek, black wooden floors, with a white U-shaped couch facing a flat-screen TV that hung above a fireplace. The walls were decorated with paintings of various landscapes and oceans. To the left of the TV, a doorway led to the kitchen and dining room with a door to the backyard separating the two areas. The place was decorated with lemons like lemon themed everything. Lemons decorated tablecloths, cups, and there was even a lemon shaped teapot. The kitchen table was set as if Grandmother was expecting company, placemats, plates, utensils and wine glasses were set in place with a thin layer of dust on them. Decorated with you guessed it; lemons. The other side of the living room led to another doorway and a hallway. To the right end of the hallway was the master bedroom, Grandmother's bedroom. Yeah, I was sleeping in the guest bedroom that was towards the left. On my way there I passed the laundry room and bathroom. The bedroom was similar to the living room, mostly white with lavender colored accents. A queen-sized bed with a white-colored comforter and about twenty lavender and white pillows sat in the middle of the room with a dresser on each side. Across from the bed sat a vanity desk with a lavender trimmed mirror. A big closet was on the right side of the room and the left had two big windows. Thank goodness, I thought it was hot outside? Inside it was 10X worse. I opened the windows, changed into some pajamas, and dived into the bed ready for a long, long sleep.
At least that’s what I thought. I woke up to the most annoying noise in the world, a lawnmower. With the windows open the noise was almost deafening. I practically fell out of bed and rushed to the window to see a boy with golden blond hair in a grey wife beater and some tacky kaki shorts pushing a lawnmower. I threw on my silk robe over my sleepwear and rushed out to the yard. Going through the back door of the kitchen I found the door led to a wrap-around porch that had an outside sitting area, decorated with Grandmother's favorite citrus, lemons. Never mind that though I was beyond furious. It must have been like 6 o’clock in the morning. Outside the sun was already blazing making the stone path extremely hot on my bare feet. I noticed the path led to a boating dock with chairs, a fire pit, and a boat tied to it? It looked like it was in good condition just a little dusty, just like everything around here. Anyways back to the matter at hand, the boy had his back to me so he didn’t see me.
“Hey, Heyyy!!! Golden boy!” Geez was this guy def? I was right behind him screaming, but he didn’t even flinch. Then suddenly my life flashed before my eyes as he turned the lawnmower of death towards me. The blades were close to cutting off my toes as I jumped back with a scream. The boy looked just as startled as I did stumbling back.
“What is wrong with you!” I screamed.
“What!?”
“I said what is wrong with you!?”
“Sorry I can’t hear you,” he replied, taking out his earphones, I could hear the hard rock music from here, “what did you say?” He replied with a stupid cheesy smile while looking me up and down. I then realized I was wearing my skimpiest pajamas and wrapped my robe closer around me.
“I said what is wrong with you? Who mows a lawn this early in the morning?”
“Early in the morning-“
“And who are you!?”
“Well if-“
“And what are you doing here!?”
“Geeze sunshine if you’d just let me talk.”
“Fine speak”
“Well thanks for the permission, first of all, it’s noon so I don’t know what morning is to you but the normal world sees this as the afternoon and I’m mowing the law.”
“Obviously, but why are you here?”
“Cuz’ I’m getting paid”
“How? The person who lived here is… is dead,” I replied, stammering a bit.
“Yeah, I know Mrs. Goodwinson passed away. She paid me in advance for the whole summer,” he said like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“Oh okay, then why- wait did you say it was noon?” I said, panic rising in my voice.
“Yeah, 12:23 to be exact,” he said looking at his phone.
“Oh shit,” my mom's friends were coming by at 12:30 to look at the house and I still had airport hair. “Whatever just when you’re done I’d like to discuss your job in the house please.”
“Sure thing your highness”
I ran back to the cottage and into my room and quickly stripped off my pajamas. Suddenly I heard a low whistle from outside the window.
“Aye I didn’t know the view from here could be so good,” chuckled Golden Boy from outside the window.
Screaming I dropped to the floor and army-crawled to the window. I gave the boy a rude gesture which resulted in his annoying laugh. I closed the window curtains and got up to get dressed. Just a second later I heard a knock on the door.
“Just a second,” I hollered from my room. I pulled on the first dress from the top of my suitcase, which was a simple green sundress with white flowers, and quickly brushed my hair into a ponytail. Thank goodness I was dressed decently because when I opened the door the family in front of me looked like they could be on the cover of some high living magazine.
“Hi you must be Whitney it is so nice to meet you, we are the Camerons!” said a shrill voice.
Oh boy.
a/n: Thank you so much fo reading it really means a lot to me! OK guys, we’re heading into summer and winter hardcore here, so the power usage is gonna rocket. Bad idea for those who use fossil fuels (e.g ALL OF US) so make sure you cut down on that shit 1) Air Conditioners / heaters  First things first, clean yo goddamn filters. This will make the unit far more efficient.   I try and do this at least twice a year, it does make a huge difference. A clean aircon cools / heats better and chews up less power. Second things second:  Stop being batshit with your comfort zone. Seriously. On hot days we don’t set our aircon below 26c (and even then only on schtoniking 40+ c days) and you generally don’t want to have it below 24c anyway, as every degree below that will exponentially increase the power usage. Don’t fuckng @ me with a whinge about how you can’t function unless the aircon is set below that number, either go see a goddamn doctor about that shit, or admit you’re a spoilt little shit who has no concept of discomfort.  I’m not gonna hold your hand, we’re literally talking apocalypse here so knock that bullshit off.   For those of you in winter climes, put on a goddamn jacket, 18c is generally a good place.     It’s also worth noting that the humidity is what causes people to suffer - this is why aircon is so much more beloved than simple fans.  Try setting to dehumidify over cool and you may be seriously shocked at the results. (Also pipe that water to the garden!!) Of course these are all rather moot if you don’t.. 2) Insulate, insulate insulate! Yes, even in a shitty rental in Australia you can insulate.  I’ve mentioned it before, but you grab yourself some lightblock curtains, stuff some thermal  lining on them and you can absolutely slaughter the huge heatsink in your house that is your windows.    Block those fuckers off, and you will prevent heat loss and entry. Close the blinds during the heat of the day. Deny it entry and huddle in a cave, mocking it from afar.   Open up come the cool change and waft all those breezes through your house.   For the winterites, do the opposite - invite in the warmth of the sun, then close up against the dark.  Remember: It’s always easier to keep the  weather out, than try and control it when its inside.
Sniff around your house. Feel for spots of increased or decreased temperatures. What is causing them? how can you stop them? Is it as simple as closing a door, using a draught excluder, or being fancy with some space blankets? (Can’t afford space blankets? Fuckit, I’ve literally walled the entire western facing windows of our house with aluminium foil during a particularly vicious summer.)  Find out what needs to change and do it.    Is one room damned near impossible to insulate and infects the rest of the house? Close the door, or (as in our case) if you have pets that need access, snag an expanding curtain rod, cut it down to fit your door frame and hang a curtain as a blast shield.
You think this shit doesn’t work?  I damned well assure you it does.  And it’s astonishing how much:
Tumblr media
Note the time. Top temp is indoors, bottom temp is outdoors. No heating turned on whatsoever, literally just thermal curtains on the windows and a draught-excluder on the front door (this is in my lounge room, a room about 4mx5m with one wall that’s practically nothing but fucking window)  As the crow flies, those two temperature monitors are literally 2m apart - one on the bookcase just inside my front door, the other outside on the front porch.   3) Don’t Forget the great outdoors Seriously. Outdoors useful. Outdoors good. Exterior shutters will stop the heat hitting your home in the first place. Trees will cool microclimates around your home via  evapotranspiration  - they literally act as air conditioners.  This is why cities are always hotter than suburbs or country, it’s the damned trees. PLANT SOME.    Hang exterior shades, even in a rental - the fuckers never look for outdoor hooks.  Put yourself in a solar powered fountain, that will also help lower the temperatures around the area, as well as give local wildlife a steady supply of water.   (If you’re like catnip to Mosquitos, then try something like Mosquito Dunks, they contain BTI which fucks up the little squiggly water-larvae’s ability to process food so they die before they become flying bite-cunts. I love that shit.)

i. in circles
focus: leonnaux altoix cw: trippy dream shit wc: too many
i’ve been reading the homestuck epilogue and was inspired by some narrative stylistic choices that made me feel the intense urge to write a trippy dream sequence. is it symbolic? your guess is as good as mine
In his dream, he was falling.
He saw nothing, felt nothing—there was no air rushing past him as he plummeted, but the sensation of falling through space was unmistakable in the way that you always seem to remain aware of your body as it relates to the space around you. His eyelids always felt heavy, and they never rose above half-lidded. Any attempt to move winded him as if he’d sprinted half a mile; though there was nothing barring his movement, no physical presence to fight against, his body refused to obey.
So all he could do was fall listlessly toward a ground that never seemed to grow closer. He was being pulled toward it, but it seemed to race away just as quickly. He’d spent a lot of time waking contemplating what it meant—at least, when he was alone. But asleep, he couldn’t do much contemplating on the absurd scenario that his subconscious had constructed out of any number of stressors or stimuli he’d experienced in the waking world. He could listen to the blood rush in his veins as his heart raced, anticipating impact. He could feel his fingertips and toes tingle, cold sweat bead over his forehead.
He could smell the Twelveswood, his childhood home. The forest smelled a particular way after rain that he’d never really forgotten. This scent was similar, but not quite the same. Moist soil, sure, wet plant matter, sure—but this smelled as if it had been left to stagnate. It was caught between the way the forest smelled after a pleasant rain shower and a mosquito’s breeding pit deep in a cavern he’d never been to but which in Gridania his family had continually been told to go back to. The scent clawed at his stomach. It was heavier on the latter than the former if he focused on it.
Suspended in his dance with the ground below, the impact came before he had time to register the ground growing closer. First he was yalms away from it, and then in a blink of an eye his head was colliding with it. He couldn’t recall any waking pain worse being pushed half-remembered migraines after his visions subside, so his subconscious invented what it figures the white-hot pain of his skull splitting open should feel like. It felt like the color white looks. Searing behind his eyes. It invented what it figures the sensation of brains spilling out on stone should feel like.
He brought a hand to his hairline and it came away wet, his bare fingertips stained red with blood. He was a teenager again and when the white pain subsided. He was on the floor. His older brother stood over him, hands balled into fists and lips twisted in disgust even as his hazel eyes brim over with tears. It was the first time Leonnaux sees no resemblance between them, and it was a vision that the younger of the two █████████ brothers still can’t forget. It was the first time Leonnaux realizes that his brother bears more of a resemblance to their mother than he does, being the more obviously Duskwight of the two.
It was the first time he realizes the significance of her mother’s hushed whispers with Kyhr’to, a family friend. Always only when she thought Leonnaux was out of the room. It was the first time he realized the significance of the one fever dream he recalled vividly but could find no notes on despite very definitely remembering the act of writing them, where his father had held him as a baby, swaddled in a blanket on the porch of their old cottage while waiting for his mother to come back from the market.
It wasn’t until then that he realized the true meaning of his mother’s words, spoken out of anger the night prior after his journal was ripped in half between them. The papers had been torn out of the threads that bound them together. Cheaply-made but the best Leonnaux could afford with his pitiable allowance.
“You’re no son of mine.”
Leonnaux felt the hot tears well up in his eyes as he scrambled to his feet, rushed to their shared bedroom, and barred the door with a chair—though it was unnecessary. His brother Navaire didn’t bother trying the doorknob, likely set back to his work burning the remains of Leonnaux’s journal.
The tears traced hot paths down his cheeks and he was a child again, and his cheeks were dry again. The summer heat penetrated through the Twelveswood’s thick canopy with each ray of sunlight and he shared some ice cubes their father had made with magic with Navaire. They sat by the river, watching small fish dart around in the impossibly clear water but didn’t dare dip their feet in, for fear of crayfish pinching their toes. He couldn’t have been older than four. He wasn’t even sure it ever happened. Everything was covered in a vivid rose filter, and light bloomed impossibly around the two boys while they waited for their father to fetch them for dinner.
When their father did call to them, he looked over his shoulder and then he was an old man, or at least was older than he ever imagined himself being when he briefly let himself fantasize about it in the waking world. He was laying in bed looking over at an older version of his beloved rather than looking over his shoulder. His hair was longer and he briefly thought to himself that he was overdue for a haircut, but maybe Older-Leonnaux liked his hair longer. A certain scratchiness at his jawline told him it was time to shave, but maybe Older-Leonnaux liked some scruff. The sunlight tried to force itself through the closed shutters on his window with limited success, though he had forgotten to close the curtains before he’d gone to bed for whatever reason. Thin rays of light landed on Edda’s skin where she slept under the window.
He leaned over to plant a kiss on Edda’s cheek only to find that she had no face, and furthermore that he had not woken up beside Edda at all but what seemed to be a perfectly ambiguous mannequin. He practically watched it shift in front of his eyes and found himself absolutely stymied by the realization as he turned the wooden doll over in what was otherwise a perfect replica of the bed they so often shared. The replica-bed was, of course, situated in a perfect replica of the room they so often shared, in what he assumed was a perfect replica of the apartment that they so often shared but who could even say anything existed beyond the boundaries of the space he could see?
He reached to grab the mannequin by the arm and pull it out of the bed, but the arm came off as if it wasn’t attacked to anything, and then he was just holding a featureless mannequin’s arm, staring down where the mannequin’s face would be and marveling for a moment not at the fact that he’d presumably just slept with a mannequin but at the fact that the craftsman had managed to make it perfectly androgynous, neither male nor female, while still managing to convince him that it was Edda.
He went to rise, but as soon as the soles of his feet touched the floor, he was himself again and he was falling.
