A new law had been proposed the year before–the most restrictive immigration law the country had ever seen. Under the Immigration Act of 1924, all nationals from Asian countries were banned from immigrating, with the sole exception of the Philippines–and with a brand-new quota system set up for other countries. The quota, based on the 1890 census, allowed higher immigration from English-speaking countries and western Europe, while limiting everyone else. It easily passed with a two-thirds majority in the Senate and House, during the presidential election year of Calvin Coolidge.

Day 15: Parallels - The apprentice

Thobo Mott's forge: The man they wanted was all the way at the top of the hill, in a huge house of timber and plaster whose upper stories loomed over the narrow street. The double doors showed a hunting scene carved in ebony and weirwood. 

The House of Black and White: At the top she found a set of carved wooden doors twelve feet high. The left-hand door was made of weirwood pale as bone, the right of gleaming ebony. In their center was a carved moon face; ebony on the weirwood side, weirwood on the ebony.
