Sam Cannon Interview

Just focus on the thing that you really like doing and put all of your time and effort into it.

Did you always know that you wanted to be an artist?

I knew that I was always going to do things that were a way of working through my creative needs and desires, even when I was in school studying photography I didn’t think that I would be able to make a living through it and was kind of more trying to find the tools and learn the things that I could so that I could make the things that I wanted to make, but fully expected to graduate and get a job working at another studio, assisting, or some form of managerial role or maybe working at a gallery. So, the desire to make wasn’t going to go anywhere but it was really surprising to me that the jobs lined up.

How did you find your first job after graduation?

I was working a lot before I graduated so the first job that I got that was in the field that I was going to end up making money in (animation world) I was making gifs and posting them to tumblr and there was this other artist who was working with gifs, their name was Mr.Gif, they are a duo and they were a couple years older than me and making the same type of work that I was making, except they were getting paid for it and I had never seen that before and they were clearly getting commercial jobs to make gifs which I had never seen before. It was the thing that I was doing for fun. So, when I saw that I was like wait nobody told me that you could do this! So, I just emailed them and sent them my stuff offering to be an assistant or second shooter and that I would love to shadow them and they were kind enough to let me do that. I ended up going with them to this shoot for St Ives in Hawaii. They helped me out a lot just to understand that if you were serious about it, people would find you for it.

What is your favorite part about your job?

I think my favorite part aside from the satisfaction of knowing even when I’m working a project that is really frustrating, Im doing the thing that I wanted to do  and that feels really good, but more than anything its just really cool to be a young women and walk onto a set and have other young women not realize that you are going to be the director/photographer and when they realize that they are very pleasantly surprised that feels really good

Favorite networking tips?

I go to events and try to meet people, I don’t have any business cards or anything like that, one thing that I do is just give them my Instagram, which at first is kind of funny and awkward and if they’re older they might like roll their eyes, but if they do it, it forces them to see my work.

What inspires you?

I get inspired by paintings, I think painting in sculpture is such an additive process where there’s noting and they make it into something. And my friends who are here in they city making really dope stuff, going out and seeing them and supporting them is always really helpful and, motivating. And I love watching movies with really dumb, cheesy effects. And also, I don’t have time to read so I listen to a lot of audio books while I edit and I feel like that helps keep me in a mindset to prevent me from getting visually burnt out so I think finding other forms of media/entertainment that you can get from outside a screen is really helpful.
