I love reading A Botanical Daughter as someone who has read a lot of literature from english authors writing in that time period because I get the general code of conduct regarding names during that time period. WHICH MEANS. i get to laugh when Simon calls Gregor "Mr Sandys" or Gregor calls Simon "Mr Rievaulx" cuz it's like oh ho ho the girls are fightinnnnngggg

Started a new book off my 2023 reading list and I have a handful of thoughts and reactions on the first few chapters.

“...her mother had been a great beauty who cared only to go to parties and amuse herself with gay people. She had not wanted a little girl at all, and when Mary was born she was handed over to the care of an Ayah, who was made to understand that if she wished to please the Mem Sahib she must keep the child out of sight as much as possible.”

Ahhh, this is what isfjmel-phleg means when she says Mary is emotionally neglected.

“She pretended she was making a flower-bed...”

This seems thematically important.

“Nobody thought of her, nobody wanted her, and strange things happened of which she knew nothing.”

More neglect.

“The child ate some fruit and biscuits, and being thirsty she drank a glass of wine which stood nearly filled.”

Is this why she doesn’t come down with cholera?? Minimal preparation/risk of contamination with the fruit and biscuits, and wine not water?

“She was making heaps of earth and paths for a garden...”

More playing at the garden.

“Perhaps if her mother had carried her pretty face and her pretty manners oftener into the nursery Mary might have learned some pretty ways too.”

I think this is Mrs. Crawford (or the minister?) recognising the toll of emotional neglect on Mary, though I suppose she could also be recognising the lack of a good role model.

“If she were not so sallow and had a nicer expression . . . her features are rather good. Children alter so much.”

The conversation may be a bit thoughtless but I certainly don’t get any malice from either the officer’s wife or Mrs. Medlock. In fact, Mrs. Medlock strikes me as very capable and just straightforward, if not very comforting or good with children.

“Captain Lennox was my wife’s brother and I am their daughter’s guardian.”

Okay, the relationship between Mr. Craven and Mary’s parents is VERY clear there - how come all the adaptations get it wrong (as I hear)???

“She stopped herself as if she had just remembered something in time.”

Was Mrs. Medlock about to mention Colin??? But good for Mrs. Medlock standing up for Mrs. Craven - and, I think, maybe too for trying to explain a bit about Mr. Craven. But the other interesting thing about this conversation is Mary’s reactions (angry about her parents never caring, sympathetic towards Mr. Craven, thinking Mrs. Craven would’ve been like her own mother, the sudden drying up of sympathy for Mr. Craven) - and the fact that Mary seems to be genre-aware, so to speak, of the story she’s in and she doesn’t like it (ahh, but it will get better!). ;))

“What’s expected of you, Mrs. Medlock,” Mr. Pitcher said, “is that you make sure he’s not disturbed and that he doesn’t see what he doesn’t want to see.”

:O These are the exact same desires that Mrs. Lennox had - not to see or be disturbed by Mary! It’ll all work out in the end, but what an awful start for Mary - she’s right back where she was in India with her own parents.

In true [Marion] Fairfax style, her [1919] script of The Secret Garden is a model of creepy details and shifty, underhanded dealings. These include Mary's two forays into a bog, and Dr. Craven's plot to poison Colin so that the doctor can inherit the manor. The movie is designed to keep filmgoers in a state of pop-eyed anxiety, but it also gratifies the softhearted by interposing an especially doting Mrs. Sowerby, and by marrying off Colin and Mary, who in this version are not cousins. Fairfax's Mrs. Medlock is a punishing crone who forces Mary to hem towels as a penalty for having helped Colin remove a brace prescribed by the sadistic Dr. Craven. At the end of the picture, the garden is "full of bloom, and happiness reigns"; but an important function of this mysterious walled quadrangle on the grounds of Misselthwaite is to serve as a place of retribution in which the children bury Colin's brace, to even the score with the malevolent medic.

The first film adaptation of The Secret Garden was made in 1919. It has since been lost, but its script and a summary do still exist, from which Stokes derives the above description. It is interesting how many elements not from the book that are part of this adaptation have continued to be used by later films, such as the villainization of the doctor and Mrs. Medlock, romance between the children, and sensationalized action sequences. Yet unlike many later versions, it includes Mrs. Sowerby in a significant role.

The Secret Garden Non/Disney animated trailer

A Non/Disney fan trailer mix of the Warner Brother Company's movie: "The Secret Garden" Happy Spring Equinnox to the North Hemisphere! Due that last Sunday was the Laetare Sunday, which it's less strict than the other days within Lent, and because the Solemnity of Saint Joseph was celebrated this year on March 20, displaced by that said Sunday and my birthday's celebration weekend lands this week, I'm taking a little break from my Lent resolution and I bring you this trailer, as a Spring Equinnox and early Birthday Special. 

The Secret Garden movie of 1993 is a Spring/Easter classic of our Familiar Cinema Club. It's a special and heartwarming story about the importance of nature, friendship, and letting children be children. I thought The Little Prince (and in this case the 2015 movie) had some of that message too, and I wanted to make a mix with it, along with some secondary characters from Ballerina/Leap, another french production with a simillar animation, to complete the cast.

Like, I’m a 90s kid. I learned cursive in 2nd grade. I wrote essays in cursive. Something that used to be common in my childhood is now a “lost art”?

At this point, some of you may be thinking, “Yeah, so what? Cursive is an obsolete thing that those icky boomers care about. Everything is on the Internet now.”

In response, let me give you my perspective as a bookworm.

In Chapter 9 of The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, there is a scene where Mary Lennox and Martha the maid are discussing getting seeds so that she can start gardening. Martha suggests sending a letter to her brother, Dickon, who has an exceptional green thumb.

“In the shop at Thwaite they sell packages o’ flower-seeds for a penny each, and our Dickon he knows which is th’ prettiest ones an’ how to make ’em grow. He walks over to Thwaite many a day just for th’ fun of it. Does tha’ know how to print letters?” suddenly.

“I know how to write,” Mary answered.

Martha shook her head.

“Our Dickon can only read printin’. If tha’ could print we could write a letter to him an’ ask him to go an’ buy th’ garden tools an’ th’ seeds at th’ same time.”

“Oh! you’re a good girl!” Mary cried. “You are, really! I didn’t know you were so nice. I know I can print letters if I try. Let’s ask Mrs. Medlock for a pen and ink and some paper.”

Note the distinction between writing (cursive) and printing. Martha and Dickon’s family is poor and has a lot of children. The detail of Dickon only knowing how to read print seems to imply that he was taught to read at home (likely from the family’s Bible). 

Mary was taught (poorly) to read and write at home as well, but her parents were rich enough to afford multiple governesses.

So, what does this have to do with 21st century?

It seems to me that if, once upon a time, cursive was a sign of good schooling, and printing was a sign of a lack of schooling, then we’ve come full circle within a few decades of everyone being on the Internet.

Think about it. In the past, the children who knew cursive came from families who could afford good education. Then it became common, where everyone learned it. Now, cursive is falling out of popularity, and who will be the children to learn cursive in the future? Those who come from families who can afford homeschooling and/or private school.

Food for thought.

what's your favorite and least favorite adaptation of the secret garden?

Hello anon! You're my very first ask on this blog!

I have not yet watched every adaptation. I'm eternally bitter that only 1 episode of the anime is available with English subs, after a lot of digging I was able to find all 39 episodes on a Chinese video sharing website, but it only has subs in Chinese not English. It looks absolutely wild though. I haven't seen the musical either (yet), so I can't comment on that one.

Of the ones I have seen, it's hard to really dislike any of them, since they are ultimately still a story that I have a lot of love for. I grew up watching two adaptations, the 1993 film and the 1975 BBC TV series, so these two will always have a special place in my heart, mostly due to nostalgia. I'm biased and I admit it. 1975 is certainly the closest adaptation to the book (I think of every adaptation, certainly all of the ones that I've seen), but lacks in stylistic flair. 1993 isn't perfect (justice for Mrs Medlock), but I'd say that it is my favourite adaptation just because of how beautiful it is and how many times I watched it as a kid.

In terms of my least favourite, I watched the 1994 animated movie for the first time last year and it was terrible, but like... terrible in a way that I find funny. When the robin started singing and talking to Mary in English, I honestly burst out laughing, it was so absurd.

I have loads more to say about all of the adaptations, and I'm planning on doing write-ups for all of them on this blog in the future :)

GUYS I just went to the most spectacular fabulous Christmas party and now you all have to hear about it because it’s my tumblr and I said so

So I was the first one to arrive and my boss introduced me to his younger brother and he was like “this is my friend and summer theater coworker Ellie” YES YES YES YES YEAH YES FRIEND!!!!!! YEAH FRIEND!!!!!!!!!!!! Also everyone was dressed so nicely it was so fun, and a little group of us got a tour of the house and guys it’s so cool it’s literally the coolest house ever in the entire world and also I keep finding out new fun facts about my boss like he’s smoked weed before and he spray tans???? Also Mrs. Medlock from the summer theater production of The Secret Garden was there and I got to catch up with her and she’s doing a Shakespeare showcase that I’m going to audition for and she gave me some really good advice about how to navigate social gatherings and she’s also trained in Meisner technique and I got to catch up with lots of Secret Garden people and meet a couple new people too AND ALSO my boss did a costume change in the middle of the party, he disappeared for a while and when he came back he was wearing a gold sequin suit it was so cool you guys.

ALSO ALSO GUYS WE COULDVE DONE WAITRESS??????? FOR OUR 2024 SUMMER SHOW???????? APPARENTLY THE RIGHTS LIKE JUST CAME OUT?????? (But we’re not doing Waitress bc the rights just came out and it’s not a show that would draw in crowds in our community)

Things that I personally am tired of in TSG adaptations and retellings:

Aging up the children. Not necessarily a bad twist, but over-done recently. It's okay if the kids are actual kids! The character development from the book makes more sense for ten-year-olds than teenagers anyway.

Downplaying the boys' roles to overemphasize Mary. She is the primary protagonist and should get everything that comes with that role, but it's okay if this is Colin's story too. And I wouldn't complain if an adaptation/retelling let Dickon have a little more of the spotlight too. Their stories are all interconnected, and there's nothing wrong with letting them be co-protagonists!

Emphasizing the adults. This should be a subplot and backstory that enhances the main plot rather than engulfing it. I understand why the musical made the choices it did, but ideally (for me, at least) an adaptation/retelling would not make any of the adults a main character.

The garden is unambiguously, literally magic/there are actual confirmed ghosts. TSG is actually quite a down-to-earth story. The children attribute the garden's and their growth to magic, but that's the magic of the real, ordinary, amazing natural world at work. The closest the book comes to anything supernatural is Mr. Craven's dream, which is intentionally ambiguous.

Gender flipping just to gender flip. It's not as clever a twist as adaptations/retellings seem to think. It's okay if there are boys in this story. Really.

Ignoring the Sowerbys' importance. The Sowerbys are the book's example of a loving, functional family, in contrast to the Lennoxes and Cravens. They are the first ones to actively reach out to Mary and show her some love--which results in her starting to like people for the first time. That's pretty crucial to the plot, and there's a lot of untapped potential for this in adaptations and retellings.

Interpreting the theme as about healing from grief. Nope, this is a story primarily about the effects of emotional neglect, as reflected by the garden. The garden is not grieving; it has been ignored and untended. The same with the children.

Making Medlock/the doctor/any of the adults actively antagonistic. The conflicts of this book are mainly internal! Let's do something with that instead of contriving Evil Adult drama.

Making Mrs. Craven and Mrs. Lennox sisters/twins. I understand the reasoning behind the choice in some adaptations, but it's been done to death by now, and it really has no basis in the book. Let's try something with Mrs. Craven and Captain Lennox as siblings (as in the book), or else not make a big deal out of this.

Mischaracterizing the children. Mary and Colin do not need to be more likeable at the start. That's not the point. Mary does not need to be Sara Crewe But Sort of Pricklier. Colin does not need to be the hapless victim of evil adults. Etc. And Dickon does not need to be mysterious and vaguely magical/mystical to be in tune with nature.

Shipping the children. This isn't a shipping book. Burnett does not hint at romance among the children; why then is it necessary to include that? Relationships are no less close, meaningful, and valuable for being platonic. It is absolutely enough to let the kids be friends/family, both in the story's present and in their future as adults.
