Hi guys! Today I'll try to show the couples of the Slasher Mansion. I know it's nothing special, but I just had this idea and wanted to share. Let's start!

- Candyman and Helen: We all know the story of Candyman and Helen. Yes, they had some issues at the beginning, but it didn't stop them from giving their romance a chance. After several years of being together, they got married in a small ceremony and are THE married couple of the Mansion.

- Hannibal and Clarice: Now their love story goes waaaaaaaaay back, but they're still happily together. Hannibal uses his knowledge and experience to make their marriage as best as possible. They're the IT couple. Everyone knows about them, everyone adores them. Clarice often comes to Mansion to see him and passes him the information

- Chucky and Tiffany: They're on and off all the time, so you never know when they're together. One day they're cooking together and laughing, the next day he gets his beer warm. It's all because he's too immature and she's desperate for love. In the end, they never work out and everyone knows it

- Billy and Stu: Okay, they're not together, but they have experimented a few times. They've done all sorts of things together and sometimes go on dates to kind of just be alone with each other. The only problem is that Stu gets attached while Billy doesn't care much. It's the same everything

- Norman and Carrie: Their relationship is so pure and cute it's like a fairytale. Norman, being the sweetie he is, often buys Carrie gifts or just compliments her. Carrie, being the shy girl she is, often does some acts of love and affection for him. For example, Norman would make her a bracelet and Carrie would talk to his mother

- John and Tiffany: They're not a couple either, but they're seen as the parents of the house. Seeing as they keep everyone (and each other) in line, everyone refers to them as a couple. They often talk about many topics, cook together, help each other out. One time, Tiffany even talked John out of suicide (if you want I can write this)

- Michael and Brahms: It's unknown what these two are. They're seen together almost all the time and often hide away together to be alone. No one ever saw them do anything romantic to, but they've heard something from Michael's room

Lyle Lovett and Leo Kottke at Midland Theatre, Newark, Ohio, Oct. 28, 2023

Dressed casually in jeans, Leo Kottke was talkative, gut-bustingly funny and similarly loquacious on guitar.

Donning dark formal wear sans tie, Lyle Lovett was more reserved - musically and otherwise - in joining Kottke in Conversation and Song, as their joint tour is dubbed, Oct. 28 at Newark’s Midland Theatre.

Talking about supermarkets, the laconic Lovett, speaking in his smooth Texas drawl, said his wife won’t say Piggly Wiggy; she calls it “that store.”

“I don’t like Come and Go,” Kottke shot back in his gravely baritone.

On it went for two hours, 10 minutes as the friends, colleagues and veritable opposites attracted a large crowd that ended the evening on its collective feet after Lovett and Kottke encored with the former’s “Church,” one of two songs the pair played together (Lovett’s “She’s No Lady” was the other) with Kottke’s low voice and fast-fingered fretting paired beautifully with Lovett’s higher, raspier, croon and simpler guitar style.

This is no knock. Virtually every guitarist plays with less complexity than Kottke.

He’s a band of one who transformed his six-string into an aural six-piece as he played “Twice,” from his partnership with Phish’s Mike Gordon; sung of love almost consummated on “Julie’s House;” and nodded to his heroes - Derek Trucks and Michael Hedges were among the names Kottke dropped throughout the evening - on John Fahey’s “The Last Stream Engine Train.” All told, Kottke offered seven majority instrumental songs that saw him employing slide, fingerpicking, harmonics, feedback and other devices to create the sounds Lovett accurately described as “perfect.”

“What came immediately after the steam engine?” Lovett asked his on-stage compatriot following Fahey’s number.

“A Plymouth,” Kottke replied.

For his part, Lovett played nine tunes, mixing such far-flung covers as Tammy Wynette’s “Stand by Your Man” and Guy Clark’s “Texas - 1947” with self-written fan favorites including “12th of June” and “Pony on My Boat.” And when Lovett performed “Ain’t it Something” after a particularly long-winded, circuitous and hilarious monologue from Kottke, during which he declared nothing is more frightening than happiness and freedom, Lovett explained the selection by saying: “That was the only song I could think of to support your story.”

Kottke couldn’t have been surprised.

“Non-sequiturs don’t faze me,” he said later in the evening.

Explanations/Opinions below the cut:

Ok so I have several reading lists/stacks that I rotate through: my to-read spreadsheet (which has almost 300 titles listed in chronological order by date added, with the oldest being from 8/22/2014), my to-read bookcase/nightstand (which holds ~50 books I’ve acquired over the past few years but haven’t yet read), a stack of oversized unreads that don’t fit on the nightstand shelves (this gets its own list bc I need to read them and find a permanent home for them before the stack gets too tall), and “interruptions” (books that override the list order bc I didn’t want to wait to read them, for whatever reason).

Maybe it’s weird that I’m so attached to reading things “in order”? Idk. I’ve always been like this. It’s only a mild compulsion – obviously, I am perfectly capable of ignoring what’s supposed to be next on the list, in favor of reading something that catches my interest more strongly in the moment, but in general, I like to read things either in the order I added them to the list, or the order I personally acquired a physical copy (if I went by the list only, I’d be drowning in unread books [yay, college town thrift stores], so I gotta stay on top of that pile pretty regularly). So that is why I am often reading things that I first became aware of/added to my list nearly 10 years ago. Sometimes this practice results in feelings like, “Dang, I wish I would’ve actually read this 10 years ago,” but also sometimes, “WOW, I’m so glad I’m reading this RIGHT NOW, as opposed to 10 years ago when I first heard about it!”

I think my favorites this year were Mariette in Ecstasy; Other Voices, Other Rooms; Crapalachia; and Speak, Memory.

Mild disappointments were the essay collections by Leslie Jamison and Meghan Daum, two authors I’m pretty sure I discovered via popular and relateable quotes reblogged on tumblr ca. 2014, but the collections taken as a whole just had too many moments of cringe – casual classism, arrogant self-absorption, and other annoying and unrelateable qualities typical of privileged 20-something writers (this tone definitely appealed to me when I was a naïve and melodramatic snotty 20-something, so there’s that).

As a kind of memorial, Rachael and I read David’s three favorite books: The Stars My Destination, Mother Night, and American Gods. In all the time I knew him, including all the times we used to sit on the porch together, reading quietly while he drank whiskey, I never thought to ask him his favorites. I kept looking for pieces of him in the stories, wondering what lines stood out, what made a book memorable, what did it say about him that these were his favorites.

Being an elder Millennial, I’m in the stage of nostalgically re-acquiring important artifacts from my childhood, so that’s why there are some children’s books on my list. Where’s Waldo? was one of the most coveted books in my grade-school library! There was always a list of people waiting to check it out, but usually, whoever actually had the book that week would let the other kids gather around and look together.

My Heart Is a Chainsaw was a recommendation from my goth teenaged birthdaughter <3 which I probably read too much personal symbolism into but maybe not!

I thought John Updike was overrated, lol.

Favorite photography book: W. Eugene Smith’s Dream Street. His pictures made me so homesick, and it was wild because he took them from 1955-1957 but they still really, REALLY, to me, looked like the Pittsburgh of my ‘80s/’90s memories (bc Pittsburgh doesn’t change, and also the “idea” or “brand” of Pittsburgh in the ‘80s/’90s was ofc consciously referencing its industrial working-class past). He took over 10,000 photos but was never able to “finish” the project to his intense, obsessive standards of perfection (I KNOW THAT FEEL) and felt it failed to capture the multifaceted essence of the city. WELL, not in my opinion at least!
