Renee Rapp and Barrett Weed went from playing characters who obviously lesbians but not allowed to say it in Mean Girls to playing actual canon lesbians in their TV shows. Good for them.

okay, so day of the doctor is a lot of things. and while i do have my issues with some of them, the way murray gold scored the episode is just. so good. so many of the pieces end up weaving together music from both ten’s and eleven’s eras, and listening to the soundtrack is fun for that reason alone. but, assuming you accept up-front the episode's premise of saving gallifrey, one piece that does this particularly well is this time there’s three of us.

it plays during the climax of the episode; when the three versions of the doctor debate whether to press the button, decide not to, and then find how to come together to freeze gallifrey somewhere in the universe. and while there are four main sections to the piece, the first two are especially interesting.

the first section (0:00-2:20) plays as the doctors are about to press the button and they and clara see the projection of the civilians in the time war around them. it’s haunting, and suits not only the gravity of the situation, but the greater weight of the time war that’s hung over the entirety of nuwho up to this point.

but the thing is about this section is that it was actually first in the waters of mars—a version of the piece called altering lives.

the piece plays as the tenth doctor stands in the airlock informing adelaide of how the fixed point means her death sentence. and upon the piece's end, they start to walk away, hearing the screams of the crew all the while, before changing their mind and turning back in a terrible sequence of events that only makes things worse. the haunting sound really reflects the doctor’s mental state surrounding the time war, and how far they'd go because of it.

going back to this time there’s three of us, this first section plays as the three doctors are about to press the button, again hearing the screams of the people around them as they do it. again, the situation is something tragic and regretful. and again, as in the waters of mars, the doctor changes their mind: choosing to intervene by not pressing the button. but this time, maybe that intervention isn't so misguided. while both situations are steeped in pain from the time war, while the first situation is fixed barring risking time itself, slowly the doctors realize that maybe—just maybe—the second is not.

as such, once this choice is made, the second section of the piece (2:20-3:45) begins to play. and this second section happens to be the first version of the shepherd’s boy to appear in doctor who.

i’ve, uh. gone on and reblogged about this before, but the shepherd’s boy is emblematic of so many things: hard-won triumph, continuing an exhausting cycle, rising from the ashes, hope.

here in dotd, rather than the doctor rising from the ashes (e.g. heaven sent, twice upon a time), gallifrey itself is. it’s an impossible sort of hope, continuation even against all odds. instead of devolving into the mania of the waters of mars, this time, the circumstances are allowing the doctor to do something to try to make right their regret.

in this way, this time there’s three of us also shows a kind of bridge between the really damaged place the doctor is in early on (e.g. altering lives and the nine/ten eras) and the still-healing, but vastly improved place they ultimately work to (e.g. late twelve-era and the shepherd's boy). and fittingly, shortly after the shepherd’s boy section concludes, we see our very first shot of twelve. :)

really, say what you will about the events of day of the doctor (i know i do at times). but accepting the episode for what it is, the way murray gold uses this piece to combine themes both past and future drives me absolutely insane.

Hashtags, hashbrowns and hashish. Gelman you vents a creative way to track a drug ring who’ve been pedalling their wares to local restaurants. Songs featured: slipping through my fingers from mamma Mia performed by Delaney and Findlay. And out there from hunchback of Notre Dame performed by Gideon

Neon purple Cindi Lauper. Phaedra Wilkins is murdered on her front doorstep and Findlay takes a unique approach to the mourning period. First appearance of Sigourney Weaver as Phaedra’s mother Natalia Clifton. First regular appearance of Jeff Bridges as Minos Wilkins. Songs featured: Rose’s turn from gypsy performed by Natalia. And send in the clowns from a little night music performed by Minos.

Nothing’s ever simple anymore. As Captain Birch’s team are benched from the Wilkins investigation on the grounds of conflict of interest, Findlay throws herself into planning the charity event. Which means an even more gruelling work schedule for the company. Songs featured: servants choir from my fair lady performed by the theatre company. And no one mourns the wicked from wicked on broadway performed by Findlay, Sullivan, Drummond, Lucia, Deucalion and Kimberly.

What’s not clicking? Findlay gets the latest fright of her life and when she starts hallucinating Phaedra. Songs featured. Alive from the strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde performed by Phaedra. And requiem from dear Evan Hansen performed by Minos, Natalia, Deucalion, Kimberly and Findlay.

Assistance. As his parents investigate a string of robberies on Staten Island, Drummond gets dancing lessons from Caldwell’s sons Zack (Aaron Tveit) and Zander (Jeremy Jordan). Songs featured: friend like me from Aladdin performed by the Caldwell boys. And boulevard of broken dreams from American idiot performed by Minos.

Making a joke out of justice. A murder trial takes a turn for the strange when Jacob thinks of a novel way to get a witness to admit the truth. Songs featured: there! right there! from legally blonde the musical by Jacob and his law partners. And all that jazz from Chicago performed by Lucia.

Counselling is not a bad word. Jones and Delaney reconcile their relationship through a month’s worth of marriage counselling. Meanwhile. Down three members because of the Wilkins case, Lucia convinces Findlay to hire Andy, Solaris and Coleman as replacements. Guest starring Mitchell Hope as Andy Christensen, Robbie Amell as Solaris Burnett and Paul Telfer as Colman Tarbh. First appearance of Alfre Woodward as Winifred’s sister, Dr Melinda Crenshaw. Blood on the barstools. Midseason finale. Part one. A horrific snowstorm traps Skipper and Oswald in Golden Brick with a young Fae runaway who’s just gone into labour. Songs featured: part of your world reprise performed by Lucia. And you’ll be back from Hamilton performed by Clarissa.

Blood on the barstools. Midseason premiere. Part two. Everyone in the precinct tries to dig Skipper, Oswald and the baby free as the mother slowly bleeds out. Songs featured: pure imagination from Charlie and the chocolate factory performed by Skipper. And who I’d be from Shrek the musical performed by Gideon, Lucia and Alabaster.

Adoption. The 200th episode. From New Year’s Day to Valentine’s Day Skipper and Oswald engage in the streamlined process of adopting the baby. Meanwhile. Deucalion and Kimberly face off against Cora and her mage husband Kyle Crowder (guest star Matthew Lillard). Songs featured: you’ll be in my heart from Tarzan performed by Skipper. And hit me with your best shot from rock of ages performed by Cora, Kyle, Deucalion and Kimberly.

TWTW. It’s naming day for Skipper and Oswald’s new son. And Alabaster tries to get Findlay to relax when he thinks the charity event and work is getting too much for her. Songs featured: one from a chorus line performed by the theatre company. And go with the flow from wonderland performed by Alabaster and Findlay.

The coalition of first borns. Sidney and Beaumont confront Jones on his treatment of Sidney as Jacob and Lucia take Findlay for a night out. Songs featured: a man has dreams from Mary Poppins performed by Sidney, Beaumont and Jones. And bosom buddies from Mame performed by Findlay, Jacob and Lucia.

The syndicate. Part one. Lucia is brought in to help when the syndicate of childhood figures start being abducted. Triple timing. Rehearsals heat up and are threatened when Lucia starts dating Coleman, Solaris and Alabaster all at the same time.
