ACES PANELS - DR QUEER
Dr Queer, Aces Weekly Volume 24 Issue 2. Pencils by Mychailo Kazybrid. Script, inks & lettering by Bambos.
This spectacular full-page panel is almost overwhelming in its depth of detail and vivid colour choices. The style uses several juxtapositions to create immediate interest and unease, resulting in not only a piece of sequential art but a picture that can be appreciated in isolation.
The first juxtaposition is of art style. The panel uses cartoony figures echoing characters from British comics such as Beano and Dandy (or perhaps their parody comic, Viz), but with a level of detail and cross-hatch shading more evocative of underground American ‘comix’ such as those drawn by Robert Crumb or Gilbert Shelton. A second is that of style and subject. The cartoony and grotesque figures are supplanted into a tale of Lovecraftian horror, with this panel in particular placing its whimsical figures alongside a huge occult symbol. Perhaps the most immediate contrast is that of colour. Black, white and red is a particularly dramatic colour combination and red is known to create anxiety, aggression and stress.
The effect of all these powerful contrasts is to create unease and even panic. The busyness of the panel likewise seeks to overstimulate the viewer, as if placing them in the creepy and overcast world of a Lovecraftian mystery.
The detail crammed into the panel also creates places to hide ‘easter eggs’ that might not be obvious at first reading, such as the Lovecraftian references in the dialogue and the restaurant’s name, and the various pungent grotesques among the background characters. The void in the detail, occupied by the occult symbol, naturally draws the eye to the symbol, allowing the panel’s composition to get its story across in spite of the amount going on.
