Meet the Zapata's
This is the Fake dating / Meet the family square for the Holiday Bingo created by @storiesofsvu

Characters: Tasha Zapata & Patterson. Tasha's family (OCs)

A/N: This was supposed to be even longer, but by the time I could have finished it, the bingo would be over, so I preferred to shorten it in order to publish.
Disclaimer: Zapata's family dynamic and composition are based on headcanons I have from the little we know about it, and most of it was created for this fic, like names and ages.
Summary: When Patterson is about to spend Christmas alone, Tasha invites her to join her family for dinner. Then they have the idea of pretending to be girlfriends, in order to Tasha avoid the question of every year "when are you going to introduce us to a boyfriend or a girlfriend?".
----
“Ok… Are you ready?” Tasha asked. She turned off the car's engine and removed her seat belt.
“Are you sure about this?” Patterson was about to freak out, she had seen too many movies to know that it could end very well or terribly bad.
“I don't know, but I already told them you were coming and…” she leaned in to get a better look out the window next to Patterson, “they all are there in the window, watching us.”
Patterson looked back and indeed, in the window, she could see an elderly woman, two couples about her age, and two children, huddled together facing the car.
“Oh boy!” She deflated her lungs, exhaling quickly, to control her nerves, “ok, ok, ok, ok, ok. Here we go.”
“It would be just dinner, breakfast, and maybe launch. But if you feel too uncomfortable, we can go early.”
"Ok."
They both got out of the car, with some bags, and headed for the house.
The idea had come up a few weeks ago and it had seemed to both of them the best idea they could have had. Maybe it had been to avoid spending another holiday with the family wondering why she was still single, maybe it was because, otherwise, the blonde would have spent that day alone. Now Patterson was sure it was alcohol's fault. Anyway, there they were, about to enter Tasha's grandparents' house to pretend to be a couple for the next hours, until Christmas was over.
The door opened wide, revealing an elderly, plump woman, with gray, curly, and short hair, with a kitchen apron tied around her waist.
“Grandma!” Tasha exclaimed with a wide smile and came over to hug her in an affectionate greeting.
“Natasha, sweetheart” the woman hugged her back, “you have no idea how happy made me knowing you were coming,” she stood back to watch her for a moment “¿estás comiendo bien?”
*(are you eating enough?)
“Sí, no tienes que preocuparte por eso.”
*(yes, don't worry about it)
“Oh! You must be the famous Patterson.”
“Famous?”
“Well, I talked about you maybe once or twice,” Tasha said, and she wasn't lying, which had been a good base for them to believe that they were indeed a couple.
“Please, come in, come in… don't stay in the cold.”
“Thank you for receiving me, Mrs. Zapata,” she walked into the house behind Tasha, “I know you already have the whole dinner planned, but I liked to collaborate on something,” then offered her the bag she was holding.
“You didn't need to bring anything,” the woman took the bag and looked at the contents: a box of Christmas cookies, clearly purchased, but from a well-known bakery, and some candy canes, “and please, call me Adela.”
Adela led them to the living room, with the rest of the family. The couples were trying to hide how longing they were for their arrival, and the kids were pretending to play Mario Kart. As soon as they saw them, everyone went to greet and welcome the woman Tasha had finally brought to introduce into the family.
“Ok, ok, ok… Hi! What a thrill, I have never been greeted with such effusiveness when I come here” Tasha told to her family and put up a hand as a barrier to prevent them from pouncing on Patterson. “Leave her to breathe, you will have time to get to know her.”
Patterson remained silent, smiling nervously at everyone present. After listening to Tasha, everybody in the room took a few steps back, except for a little girl who was about 6 years old, with long, straight, light brown hair, whom she lifted up in her arms.
“Honey,” it took Patterson a second to realize that she was talking to her, “I want to introduce you to my family: he is my brother Santiago and his wife Pilar,” both waved their hands and nodded their heads. “and this is Abril, their daughter.”
“I like your hair,” said the little girl in Tasha's arms.
“Why, thank you! I like yours.”
Proceeding with the other couple in the room, “he is my younger brother Fabián and his wife Laurie, and that's Sam over there, a big fan of Wizardville."
"Oh, well, maybe later I could tell you some secrets, a few easter eggs." Patterson was hiding very well how nervous she felt, and talking about her app would definitely help with that.
"That would be so cool!"
"He is their first son. You can see the second one will be here soon.” She added evidencing the woman's prominent belly, which was noticeable even under her sweater.
“It's a pleasure to meet you all.”
“It's a pleasure to finally meet you, darling. Some here doubted whether you were real,” Pilar said looking sideways at her husband.
“Everybody, this is Patterson,” Tasha continued, trying not to pay attention to Pilar's words, She had already guessed what her brother might have imagined and, honestly, maybe it wasn't too far from reality, after all, she was indeed inventing a relationship with her friend.
“Patterson?” Fabián said.
“What kind of name is that?” Santiago asked.
“It's actually my last name, but I don't use my first name.”
“Why not?” Abril wanted to know.
“I don't like it, that's why everyone calls me by my last name.”
“But, what is your name?” Sam intervened.
Patterson looked at those present feeling the pressure to give them an answer. "My name is William, named after my father."
“But William it's a boy's name!” Abril laughed.
“Apparently, my parents didn't hear that,” she joked.
A brief awkward silence followed, but Laurie made sure to fill it immediately, "Come on in, make yourselves comfortable," she pointed to the couches and reached for a seat, rubbing her belly. "And don't worry honey, whatever she told you about us, it's not true. We love having you here."
The group settled among the available seats, Sam sat on the beanbag turning his back to the rest, and resumed playing his video games. While Abril, all shy approached her father and hugged his leg, still looking at Patterson with a smile on her face.
“Let them settle in first,” an elder man joined the group.
“Grandpa!” Tasha exclaimed and rushed to hug him, "honey, this is Ernesto, my grandpa."
"Nice to meet you," she said.
"You too, dear." He said. Tasha told her that he was a man of few words.
"You are going to sleep in Natasha's bedroom, the bed is already prepared. She can guide you there.” Adela said, “Santiago, Fabián, help them with their luggage.”
"Oh, there's no need to–"
"Please, darling, go upstairs, they'll take care of the suitcases."
"Ok."
Tasha had already warned that Adela always had the last word, so she knew better than to try to argue with her. Thus, Patterson followed the brunette through the house to the one that had been her room when she lived there. Then Tasha went downstairs to meet her brothers and get the suitcases.
In the silence, Patterson's heart seemed to beat louder. Calm surrounded her and for a moment she remained motionless. She was not used to such a large family, it felt somewhat fun, but for the moment it had been a bit overwhelming.
Then she realized she was in Tasha's room, the teenage version of her friend, showing all kinds of information about her. On one wall still remained some music band posters, on the other, she could see a series of hand-painted stars, surrounding what she assumed was a painting of the solar system. She stroked her fingers over the painting on the wall, imagining the moment Tasha painted that, before looking closely at the photos on the desk.
“She looks pretty in that photo, doesn't she?” Adela's voice interrupted the silence, startling Patterson.
“Yeah… she looks– She is beautiful.”
“I hope they didn't scare you down there, it's just that Tasha hadn't introduced any dates here in a long time. Everyone was very excited to know you were coming.”
“Not at all, I get it.”
“Oh, no… no, no, no, no,” Tasha said in a rush as she came into the room and saw the photo in Patterson's hands, “you weren't supposed to see any of that.”
“Tasha, let her see them, anecdotes will be told at dinner anyway.”
“No, I said no stories.”
“I would love to hear some story about you,” Patterson said amused, “I know you liked stars, I'd love to know more about it. Perhaps, for once, you will be the nerd between the two of us.”
“Honey, you were at space camp every year, it is clear which one of us is nerdier.”
“And you insisted every year on going too,” intervened Adela.
“I knew it!”
“Grandma!”
“Ok, now I'll leave you to settle in, dinner will be ready in an hour.”
The woman left the room and they both looked at each other in silence. After a brief moment, they both burst out laughing.
“They totally bought it.”
“I can't believe it. How did I not think of this before? This was a great idea!”
“Shhh, they'll hear you.”
“Everyone is thrilled with you. This will turn out even better than we imagined.”
When they went down to the living room, they started with the questions, they wanted to get to know Patterson better and she gracefully answered them one by one. She seemed like a pro, only talking as much as she wanted to and evading with a joke the ones she preferred not to answer. Pilar was in and out of the kitchen, and so was Tasha, while helping Adela with dinner preparations.
Eventually, Patterson sat down next to Sam and April on the beanbag and played a few Mario Kart races with them. The kids were having a good time, and so was she. Tasha couldn't help but look at Patterson all the time, she loved to hear her laughter, something that, lately, was very rare at work. When the race was over, she saw Patterson finish last and knew she had let the kids win, Tasha could only imagine how many times Patterson would have played Mario on her console.
Finally, Adela called for dinner and that's when the real questions began.
"And how did you start dating?" wanted to know Fabián, "who asked who?"
Both women exchanged glances. The good thing about pulling off this deception with Patterson was that she had thought of everything and they had agreed on a story about it, which sounded quite convincing.
“I guess it was just a natural thing… I mean, after several years of us having each other's backs at work, eventually, the feeling just came up,” Patterson explained, “and one day, Tasha invited me to dinner. I didn't realize it was a date until dessert and when she drove me home, we talked about doing it again some other time, and… here we are.”
“What made you fall in love with her?” Abril asked then.
"Abril!" exclaimed Pilar, "I'm sorry, you don't have to answer that. Abril has been reading too many romantic bedtime stories."
“Oh, no, no, it's ok." Patterson said in equal parts surprised and amused by the question, she hadn't thought of something that specific, yet the words came out of her mouth, "I could say it was her smile, to stay with romantic stories," she winked at the girl in complicity, "but it really was her boldness. How brave and determined she is,” it wasn't a lie, that was something she had always liked about her friend.
“I would have said stubbornly instead of determined, but ok,” Fabián replied just to annoy his sister, getting mocked by her and a napkin in the face in response.
“What about you auntie Tasha? What do you like about her?” Sam wanted to know.
"Boy, you guys are really curious" Tasha replied while keeping a smile on her face, hoping that the questions for details would end soon. "Well… She's funny, smart– with beautiful eyes.” Her gaze then met Patterson's and the words continued to pour out of her mouth, “I love how passionate she is about puzzles and the way she runs her tongue over her lower lip whenever she is thinking and concentrating.”
Patterson's cheeks turn pink by hearing those words, not knowing exactly how to react to them and unable to hide the smile that covered her lips.
A few more questions followed but eventually, the conversation moved on to other topics. When her family started telling anecdotes about when she was younger, Tasha didn't know whether she preferred that or going back to questions about their relationship. However, Patterson seemed amused by each thing they said.
The kids were to bed when dinner was over, and the grown-ups moved to the living room, to keep the chat a little longer. A new round of questions happened, Santiago was the most insistent bout it. As time went by, one by one they went to sleep, and after Adela and Ernesto, was Tasha and Patterson's turn. They were exhausted, and not just because it was late.
“They are great,” Patterson said looking for her pajamas and toothbrush in her suitcase.
“They are nosy.”
When they were ready for bed, it was when both noticed a fact they hadn't earlier: Tasha's room only had one bed.
“I guess there wasn't more space, with my brothers and their families here… and as we 'are a couple' ” the brunette said in a manner to explain the situation like she deserved some kind of explanation.
“No, of course, I understand.”
“I can take a blanket and sleep on the ground with my pillow if you want to.”
Patterson hesitated a while, “No. It would be weird if someone came in and found us that way.”
“Are you sure? Because I won't mind. I mean, you already did enough by coming here and helping me with my family.”
“Please! That's what friends are for, right?”
“Right.”
“Anyway,” she rushed to say, feeling silly for that comment, “it's just one night, we can share a bed.”
“Ok, yeah, no. You are right.”
Patterson laid down first, on the right side, while Tasha pretended to rearrange her things, delaying the moment. She wouldn't say it, but she was nervous. It wasn't as if she had never been this close to Patterson, but it was different this time, they were in what had been her room as a teenager. The context was much more personal. When everything in the suitcase was tidy, she couldn't pretend anymore and got into bed. Her arm touched Patterson's and she immediately rolled onto her side.
“Well,” Patterson rolled onto her side as well, facing each other, “good night.”
“Good night,” Tasha forced the words out, looked around, and added, "I'm going to- I'd better turn out the light." She turned around and after doing as she had said, stayed in that position, turning her back to Patterson, who did the same.
On Christmas morning, light filtered through the window, lighting straight into Tasha's face until she woke up. To her surprise, Patterson's arm curled around her, cuddling her asleep. She remained motionless for a while, then look over her shoulder and she could barely see that Patterson was peacefully sleeping. The hug was warm and comforting, gentle but firm and it made Tasha wonder when was the last time she had felt this way waking up next to another person.
She didn't want to wake her up, but even with the sharpest comment her grandma could make, she loved to make Christmas breakfast with her, and if she didn't get up soon, she would miss it.
She took Patterson's arm by her wrist with just two fingers. She moved her as slowly as she could to sneak out of bed, but even that couldn't prevent Patterson to wake up.
“Ugh? What happened?” she attempted to sit, disheveled and with half-opened eyes.
“I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you.”
“No, no. I was about to– Did I was hugging you?”
“Hmm, yeah…”
“Sorry,” Patterson said feeling the heat rise to her cheeks, she was fully awake now “I didn't intend to make this awkward.”
“It's fine.”
“I was told I tend to hug asleep, but–”
“Patterson, relax, it's ok. It wasn't awkward at all.”
“Ok.”
“I'll go downstairs to make breakfast, you can stay here in bed a little longer if you want.” She put on a hoodie over her pajamas and walked to the door, “there's no need for you to dress up, you can use a sweater over your pajamas. We all do that this morning.”
“Ok, I'll go in a few minutes.”
“Ok.”
“Tash…”
“Yeah?” Tasha went back on her steps.
“Marry Christmas.”
“Marry Christmas Patterson,” gave her a smile and left the room.
Even if she had wanted to go back to sleep, after a few minutes she was able to hear the screams of the children running through the house.
“Santa was here! Santa was here!”
Throughout breakfast, the children happily handed the gifts to their respective owners and opened theirs with great enthusiasm. Sam went on and on about how thrilled he was to have received a replica of the Dragon Wizard's Staff from Wizardville.
For the rest of the morning, Tasha and Patterson ended up acting as babysitters, taking care of and playing with the kids in the snow-covered front yard. Who threw the first snowball, Patterson couldn't be sure, but soon the war began: Abril and Sam vs. Patterson and Tasha.
The kids were faster than them to throw snowballs, so Patterson took the garbage can lid, to use it as a shield. Both of the kids tried their best, but after several attempts to hit Patterson, Tasha got tired of being the only available target, so she managed to get behind Patterson and put a snowball inside the back of her pajamas.
“Tasha!” she exclaimed dropping the lid of the garbage can, her shoulders shrugged, feeling the chill run down the skin of her back “That's treason!”
Patterson tried to brush the snow off and as the brunette wouldn't stop laughing, she reached for some more snow and rubbed it over Tasha's head without even shaping it. The war was over and they both went to take a hot shower before catching a cold.
After lunch they left, saying goodbye to the whole family with the promise to meet again some other time. Abril even hugged Patterson and, waving her hands in the air, wishing them a happy new year, the rest of the family watched them from the driveway as they got into the car.
“She's lovely,” Ernesto finally said.
“You know they were lying, right?” Santiago was sure he had caught them, he thought he knew his sister too well.
“No,” Adela replied with a big smile while she look at the car getting away, “that's what neither realized yet, non of them was lying.”

Multicultural Children’s Book Day
I was gifted the book Men of the 65th: The Borinqueneers of the Korean War! The book is being published by an imprint of Lerner books (www.lernerbooks.com). The book was researched by children’s author, Talia Aikens-Nunez whose previous publications include the OMG series.
Men of the 65th: The Borinqueneers of the Korean War is a nonfiction chapter book. While war history is not really my favorite subject to read about, Aikens-Nunez does a great job of capturing your attention with a great introduction. The book is filled with great facts and maps at the beginning of each chapter. I love the inclusion of a glossary as well as a bibliography. While it was a struggle for me to read because of the topic, I really appreciated learning about a facet of history I was not super-familiar with before.
Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2023 (1/26/22) is in its 10th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.
Ten years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues. Read about our Mission & History HERE.
