This Naruto meta is very interesting, I genuinely appreciate OP’s analysis of its usage of Japanese myths and nationbuilding and what that probably implies about Kishimoto’s worldview (shocking! mangaka of one of the most popular and mainstream manga is no revolutionary) but their tone at the end feels... out of place? Isolated demand for rigor?
Like, when Miike Snow gets a little bit Genghis Khan (don’t want you to get it on with nobody else but me), we all have a lot of fun with it, and that’s a good many centuries more recent than the subjugation of Kyushu. And, idk, maybe we’re not taking that as reflective of the bands personal politics in the same way, and Japan tried to take over the world more recently than Sweden (and still tends lean into its nationalist-serving interpretations of its history more than Sweden tends to) so maybe we should be a little more critical of Kishimoto than Miike Snow, specifically... but still. Idk. Genocide is fucking everywhere in history. And this kind of lionization of very old genocides is also everywhere in storytelling. If you have any sort of ethnic identification I guarantee you have stories about your antecedents doing similar, probably a lot more recently
I don’t want to be a downer or say you shouldn’t enjoy stories like this (there’s too many of them, you’d be cutting yourself off from, like, most media). And I definitely think it’s good to learn more about specific context and history behind your favorite cases of this kind of converting-bloody-history-to-fun-stories thing, I just was kind of surprised by that thread’s tone of disgust at Kishimoto when it’s so ubiquitous
(actually i will say it’s a little weird to get het up about the Hayato cause, there’s much more recent victims of Japanese hegemony that are still around that you can advocate for)
