About National Wattle Day
Why do we celebrate National Wattle Day?
We celebrate National Wattle Day to celebrate Australia and being Australian.
We celebrate National Wattle Day because:
National Wattle Day includes everyone
Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) is our national floral emblem. It is a symbol that comes directly from our land;
Golden Wattle is a unifying symbol of Australia and Australians. There is no other symbol that says so much about us and our land, Australia and
Wattles are Australian with great diversity (more than 1,071 species) and resilience like our people;
Wattle welcomes the spring, and is among the first plants to regenerate after fire, reminding us of the importance of renewal as it paints our national colours across our landscapes; and
All wattles remind us of Australia and Australians.

This adorable turkey is made from tools used in our conservation lab!
Happy Thanksgiving!
We’re thankful to have the tools to preserve and make your history accessible to you!
This delightful “tool turkey” was created by Sara Holmes, a conservator with Preservation Programs at the National Archives in St. Louis.
The feathers are made of bone folders (used to smooth out creases), microspatulas (used to remove many, many staples and other fasteners), and several types of palette knives (used as lifters, such as for removing tape).
The body is a horn folder (similar to the bone folders), wattle and eyes are made of binders' tape (used in book repair), the beak is a small piece of foamed eraser (used to clean paper, including removing mold from the surface of paper), and the feet are tweezers (used in mending to hold small fragments as well as to hold tissue used to make the mend repairs)..

Could you go into the meaning behind the aesthetics? I'm intrigued but I'm uncertain if I'm fully grasping everything I want too!
Character by character? Sure. Clockwise from the top left: young anglos only I will have to do the others another time
Tumblr media
Alfred: Clockwise from the top left: chalkboard to represent his math and science oriented brain from early days especially as he predates calculus in multiple handwritings to show the collaboration of science. Lady liberty emerging from the fog, his ideals looming over him. The microscope is a sign of innovation. The moon is his hops and ambitions ever upward. The car both the american auto industry and the innate loneliness of it. The national bird, the eagle in flight, the ferocity and aim he often has for his goals. the horseshoes for the old west but also the odd nostalgia Alfred has for things that never were. Then the star, rusting on a warship. theoretical end of empire but never the end of american airpower. And finally his portrait is his spacesuit. The only one without hair/visible human features because no country has ever projected such a strong image around the world and it obscures him.
Tumblr media
Matt: Whittling with a small knife because he's got anxiety and a lot of woods. a looming moose for the darker force and mystery of nature and his own personality. Pancakes because he's a domestic fuck when permitted. a hatchet. Lots of wood an also war crimes. his tools are often weapons too. Maple tapping. A reliance on the natural resources at his disposal that shaped his culture tightly. man's outline in front of a fire is for Matt's propensity for salt and burning and personally annihilating obstacles when properly motivated. sunrise through a frosted window. Spring and hope rising over winter and despair. A repeating rifle. He too, is the result the arms of empire. And finally his 'portrait' a young man facedown in the sheets, lots of curls. This one is popular for Matt aesthetics for the hair but he's a tired, depressive bastard who tends to linger in safety rather than push himself for better.
Tumblr media
Jack: a selection of fossils. The happiest part of his childhood was in natural history but these very collections are soaked in empire. A kangaroo and joey. His fauna but also his instincts of aggression about his environment and sometimes his sister. Meat pies because they're popular but also, born a penal colony he lacked a lot of agency over his own food and being as fast growing as he was he's a chronic snacker. map of Australia. could be self explanatory but even all the way down there he's pretty concerned about his place in the world and tends to look at himself at globes when he sees one. Two horses. Man and his country love to race but also I picked two because he really is not a person who prefers to be alone for long periods of time, as misanthropic as he can be. Surfboards: he loves his water-sports but the sunny, 'no-worries, mate' attitude too. Coffee on books. He's always been very keen to prove his wine, coffee, cuisine and tastes can stand up to the snobs and a flat white was an Australian invention. Golden wattle is the national flower and symbolizes resilience, often appearing first after fires and floods. And finally the portrait. A young man with a collar pulled up and one hand on the back of his neck, pondering his future? being a bit sheepish? both suit him.
Tumblr media
Zee: Two sheep gently headbutting each other. Sheep and a stubborn affection is something she shares with Jack even if it probably influenced her culture more. Books because she's the best educated of her generation for a long time but the titles for birds, fairytales and oxford classic texts are for her famous birds, her two sets of folklore and culture and her oxford education. Kiwi box on bike handlebars. Bicycles were a massive part of early feminism and her own independence. The box and kiwi silhouette see something she probably knocked together herself. She's handly like that. Silver ferns are a national symbol and very hard to kill, resilient and the shape is very elegant and invokes Māori art and resistance. A grumpy looking Kea. This image looks very cranky but they're the goofiest and probably smartest birds on the face of the earth. Map of new zealand on a globe. Her name is bigger than she is on the map because its somewhat imposed on her nd there's also her brother always in the corner. A canoe or boat to symbolize her maritime culture, but also her own ability to build and engineer and pilot one. Her portrait I chose a woman with her hair type elegantly put up and looking away, back to a wall, a hint of a smile on her face because she has her strict lines and a slog of struggles but also a pretty decent place in the world.

Hi do u have a better birthday date for Australia /?
Hi anon, I'm assuming this relates to the Survival Day post I made recently since hws Australia has the same birthday as that day! Well, I actually have three parts to this question. This is probably a lot more than you intended to receive when you asked this question but I thought maybe it could be interesting to others as well. 😊 The first part refers to nation verse (which I rarely participate in outside my ask blog), for that I picked what I think are the most interesting/fun. Jack got May 8th (Mate, haha) and Joyce got May 27th (1967 Referendum), of course the first one is more of a joke but it's lighthearted enough and May 27th was an extremely significant day in Australian history but most importantly represented one of the biggest and first moments where Australia successfully recognised Indigenous rights to a significant extent. I'd say those are pretty good in my book but I also do have a nationverse headcanon where nations change their birthdays (and even human names) every so often when they get bored, I'm sure Jack would have a field day with that. Keep in mind that the current date, January 26, wasn't universally recognised as a public holiday until 1994 and not all the states and territories even referred to the date as "Australia Day" until 1935, so I'd consider it strange if they even had this birthday before 1935 (even if I didn't totally dislike this date lol) The second one is for human AUs, similar to the first answer I choose any ol' day that I think suits things like time period (for instance I've changed Joyce's birthday to 27 October in reference to Fanny Durack once before). I do this for all nations, much like names which I change fairly flippantly, sometimes not even related to any particular thing. Third part is for everyone else who would prefer a more concrete response, these are all a list of alternatives to the 26th of January (most actual suggestions for an alternative to Survival Day), I've put it in order of what I personally think is best in this case at the top and worst and the bottom but that's up to you: - 27 May (1967 referendum) - 8 May ("Mate Day") - 1 September (Wattle Day) - 9 July (acceptance of the Constitution) - 3 March (Australia Act) - 19 January (alternative federation date) - 9 May (opening of Provisional Parliament House) - 8 September (Day Australia was first circumnavigated) - 1 January (Federation of Australia) - 25 April (Anzac Day) (Yeah, I wouldn't like this one much more) These aren't the only days you could go for mind you, so go for it! Additionally, I think that the whole 26th thing could probably be circumvented with some astute acknowledgements of Survival Day's complex celebratory and solemn nature, recognising the survival of Indigenous cultures that nearly or have ceased to exist due to colonisation. However, I do not have confidence this could be achieved very easily without becoming insensitive for most people (I'm not even personally sure how I would do that), particularly for something as lighthearted as Hetalia. Changing the date is actually quite easy when it's a fictional Aussie nation people and not the actual Australian government and public, so I'm quite happy if people played around with much better birth dates instead! No protest placards required! 😅 Oh well, I've waffled on long enough, I hope that was an alright response to your question and maybe some people got something out of it!

Lets talk about why I don't support protecting invasive species
Tumblr media
This popped into my mind the other day when I was sitting at lunch with a couple of friends and I saw a line of Argintinean ants on our table, so I squashed them. One of my friends made a snarky comment that "I thought you loved all animals, why are you killing the ants then," and I have been waiting for this rant for a long time. Argintinean ants are a huge problem in South Africa, where I live. They are slowly destroying the populations of native ants to the point that I barely see any other species left. Yes, I do love all animals. I love scuttly long, legged spiders that hide in the corners of my home, I love the slimy frogs that I constantly have to remove from my schoolgrounds for their safety, I even love stink bugs and the odd little buzzing sound they make when they fly. Animals are all fascinating in their own way, IN THEIR RIGHTFUL PLACE IN THE ECOSYSTEM.
I will not hesitate to exterminate an invasive wasp nest from my house that is threatening my native bee colonies. I will not hesitate to rip out Black Wattle and Rooikrans from the ground to protect native plants. This does not count for natural, native predators, as I understand that every system needs a form of balance. The problem is that these invasive species throws this balance off, which could lead to extinction in extreme cases. Another big example of invasive species is domesticated animals, especially cats. I adore cats, but I also acknowledge the huge threat they pose to ecosystems all around the world. According to BBC, "they are responsible for the deaths of between 1.4 and 3.7 billion birds and 6.9-20.7 billion mammals annually," and National Geographic says "free-ranging domestic cats kill between 1.3 and 4 billion birds – on top of between 6.2 and 22.3 billion mammals – every year in the United States alone." Domestic cats have also been blamed for the global extinction of at least 33 species.
I don't want everyone to forget that other domestic animals are also a huge problem to native species, such as dogs, rats and pigs, but cats are by far the most destructive.
I think it is extremely important for pet owners to realize the potential threat their pet poses for their native ecosystem, and I think it is necessary for them to monitor their pets, especially cats, much more strictly. It is also very important to neuter your pets, because more of them means less native species. Consider adopting instead of buying a new puppy or kitten, since stray animals also account for a lot of destruction. I do not mean to hate on pets or pet owners, As I said previously I adore animals in all their different forms. I just feel very strongly that we should put the welfare of our native wildlife before the welfare of invasive species. I want to protect them while they are still here.

Jesse and Mundy questions! Part 1 because I'm on my phone and can only keep so many questions copied at once
What triggers nostalgia for them, most often? Do they enjoy that feeling?
What lie do they most frequently remember telling? Does it haunt them?
Do they consider laws flexible, or immovable?
What were they told to stop/start doing most often as a child?
How easy is it for your character to laugh?
What triggers nostalgia for them? Do they enjoy that feeling?
It's mainly smell for both of them. For Jesse, it's the smell of vanilla. Her family was always poor and so was Edith's, but Cindy and Edith would sometimes combine their own money together to get ingredients and Edith would come over to Cindy's place to bake with her. Cakes were most common, and nothing was better to Jesse than coming home from a rough day at school to the smell of vanilla in the flat because her mum baked something. Jesse loves the smell of vanilla and it only brings good memories.
For Mundy, it's the smell of cinnamon. Much like Jesse, his mum would bake too. Her go-to was a plum pie (I will release the recipe later in the fic when shit get's really fun, so look out for that! Expect the chapter number to probably be somewhere in the late 40s to early 50s.) Anyway, her secret trick was sprinkling cinnamon over the plums before covering them with the top layer of dough. The entire house would fill with the smell of cinnamon while the pie baked, and Mrs Mundy would often smell like it herself (and it was very obvious when Mickey would hug her). The smell of cinnamon is incredibly nostalgic to Mundy and it doesn't help that it's one of Jesse's favourite smells, so she uses cinnamon-scented shampoo. If she falls asleep with him he just buries his face in her hair and breathes in the smell of it. For Mundy, it's something very bittersweet. It reminds him of his mum and home in a good way, but the knowledge that he'll never smell it on his mum again breaks his heart.
As an additional one, Mundy adores the smell of golden wattle. There's nothing bittersweet about this. It just reminds him of home in a purely good way. Not only is it the national flower of Australia, but it's also native to his hometown of Tilpa, so he'd smell the blooms often (and it's a very fragrant smell. Used in perfumes across the world because of how good it is).
For bittersweet on Jesse's behalf, it's the smell of Lucky Strike cigarettes. Though she doesn't remember the smell or what the box looked like, it's the cigarettes her brother Mikey used to smoke. For her it's one of those things you don't recognise until you encounter it again and the memory immediately takes you back. She can't tell you what brand Mikey smoked, or what the box looked like, or how the cigarettes smelt, but if she smelt them now it'd be an immediate resurge of memory (and probably a surge of tears to follow).
What lie do they tell the most? Does it haunt them?
"I'll be safe, Mum/Ma." That's the most common one. Neither of them necessarily feel bad for it since they don't want their parents to worry. There's a specific lie (by omission) that Mundy continues what features heavily later in the story, but I can't tell you because that'd be spoilers! (There's also a somewhat-minor lie Jesse has been telling people and herself for years, and it's hinted at in the upcoming chapter, but the full scope of it isn't revealed until later in the story. Props if you can figure it out!)
Do they consider laws flexible, or immovable?
Both of them don't pay too much mind to the law. Mundy follows a mantra of respect and courtesy--he obeys road laws, he's polite and tries to avoid trouble as much as he can for a mercenary. Jesse is more of the "no-harm-no-foul" type and will disobey laws that she thinks are stupid (no public swearing, for example).
Jesse is less worried about law and more worried about sin as an Irish Catholic. She'll use God's name in vain but you'll never hear her utter a "Jesus" or "Jesus Christ" in vain. She immediately lost interest in Jeremy when he started dating Pauling. She's never stolen (not just because it's a sin, but also because she grew up poor and she knows how important what little possessions she had were to her). Jesse's also never done a contract killing. All of the people she's killed as a merc have been the result of self-defence of herself or others (or so she says). There were also matches, but those guys didn't stay dead so they don't count, right? Right?
Overall, flexible for both of them.
What were they told to stop/start doing most often as a child?
Mundy was told to get down from high places. He was always climbing things as a kid--trees, buildings, people (as a toddler he was notorious for climbing up his parents' legs to make them pick him up). He has a love of heights and that continues even now with his propensity to hide in his sniper nests (and he still climbs trees).
For Jesse, it was being told to stop moving. This was very prevalent in school. She'd drum her fingers or bounce her knee. She was never disruptive to anyone but herself, but it did make schoolwork and focusing a pain in the arse for her.
How easy is it for them to laugh?
For Mundy, a little difficult. The most you'll usually get out of him is a twitch of the corner of his mouth, or maybe a chuckle if it's particularly funny. That said he has a roaring laugh when you actually get him going. He gets tears in his eyes. It's as though months of repressed laughter comes out if you make a really good crack and then he just can't stop. Has a harsh smoker's laugh and wheezes. It's great.
For Jesse, it's incredibly easy. She chuckles to herself a lot, laughs at her own jokes, giggles at funny Australian slang Mundy says, and if he says any joke (the more deadpan the better) she'll start laughing her arse off. It's very easy to get Jesse to laugh and sometimes she laughs so hard she snorts which is a guarantee to get Mundy to start laughing too. Works every time.

Decided to make a quick visit to Lake Parramatta in the hour before sunset this afternoon.
Tumblr media
This little oasis is actually squished between 3 major arterial roads. The lake (which is around 10.5 hectares in surface area) is part of a 70 hectare nature reserve.
Tumblr media
It's a man-made reservoir, and is Heritage listed. The dam is 15m high. The bottom part (11m) was completed in 1856, is the first large dam, and the first arch dam to be built in Australia. Believed to be the 11th arch dam to be built in the world, and only the second to be mathematically designed. The top 4m section was added in 1898.
Tumblr media
Crossing the Lower Hunt's Creek, below the dam.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like the way the lowering sun makes dappled gold spots on the dam wall.
Tumblr media
The coloured markers are for the swimming area, which is patrolled in summer and during busy days (like weekends and holidays).
Tumblr media
I wish you could hear these photos. The birds were calling out their songs and cries at full volume . . . competing with the constant breathy back and forth swish of peak-hour traffic in the background.
Tumblr media
The start of August is when the wattle blooms (in fact, 1st August was known as Wattle Day in NSW when I was a kid - since 1992 it has been nationally standardised as 1st September).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But, enough wattle . . . the sun is marching ever onward toward the horizon, and the carpark will shut soon, so time to head back!

Top 5 of your own plants AND top 5 dream plants to own
MEGAN, asking me to choose between my plant children is basically criminal at this point, haha. At last count, I have over fifty of them, which is - - y'know, a lot of plants.
It's kind of a wild thing to me, because I had about three at the start of the Melbourne lockdowns, but I found they were just something that helped me feel really connected to the world during that 263 days of isolation. It sparked such a passion for gardening and plantcare that I don't think I had before - just getting to nurture these little slices of potted life and watch them grow and change during a period of my life that felt drawn to a halt was very special, and it's been something I've really gotten to take out of a few very challenging years.
But yes, haha, my plants! Top five in no particular order:
(All of my) Peperomias
Tumblr media
I have about six peperomias, a few of them are cuttings of this lady right here, but I have a few other sub-species of her too. Peperomias are great because they're so easy to look after and have such great shapes to them. They also have SUCH fascinating flowers which you can see on one of my other ones here:
Tumblr media
The flowers are these long, spindly soft-green stem extensions, and this picture doesn't really do them justice in reality. They're beautiful, hardy plants though, and I love them a lot.
My snake plant
Tumblr media
She just keeps growing and she has such height to her, which you can only kinda see in this pic, haha. Anyway, I love her, A+ lady.
My monstera
Tumblr media
I've posted about this one before, but I've had her since she was about 10cm tall, so the fact that she's now up to my sternum is bananas. (Yes, I know I need to buy her a new moss stick because the one she has is way too short, and better tuck her aerial roots, but in my defence, she grows very fast).
My crucifix orchid
Tumblr media
She's not flowering at the moment, but I still think she's a megababe. Plus I think aerial roots are sexy and any home gardener cutting them off is WRONG. Embrace the wild things your plants do! It's their world, we're just living in it, etc etc etc.
My rubber plant with bonus Oreo
Tumblr media
A terrible photo of my rubber plant, but Oreo loves to hide under her leaves, and this is the best photo I have of that, so I hope you get the gist anyway, haha.
Top Five Plants I Want
My dream these days is to have a proper native garden to provide sanctuary to native wildlife, particularly native bats, birds and bees (the three B's!) I'm pretty passionate about decolonising gardens, so even though I love a lot of non-native plants (including virtually all of the ones above), I do think that our gardens should prioritise native flora and try to restore our natural ecosystems.
I rent, which is a big part of why most of my plants are transportable, but I'm hoping soon I might be able to start fostering a native garden.
In that, five of the plants I'd want would be:
Lemon Myrtle
Tumblr media
I adore lemon myrtle, both as a plant and as food. It's delicious, beautiful, and just this incredible plant? I love her.
Waratahs
Tumblr media
Gorgeous showstoppers!!
Kangaroo Paw
Tumblr media
Kangaroo Paw's are probably one of my favourite native plants period, and I did actually have one for a long time, but I'd planted her out into the backyard and the soil at the place I live isn't very good quality, and despite trying to treat it, she died, which is a bummer. I'm hoping I have better luck next time!
Native Bluebell
We have a whole lot of these in the park near my house, and I just think they're really pretty. Tumblr's not letting me upload a pic, but you can see them here.
Wattle
Tumblr media
Yeah, okay, she's Australia's national flower, but I am in love with herrrr. Golden Wattle still takes my breath away when I see her in full flower, and the idea of having that at home is magic.
Ask me about my top fives!

Buying Property Or Land For Sale In Uvita, Costa Rica
The state's largest bass of 2000, 15 pounds and 17 pounds, came belonging to the reservoir during March. However in the summer months, they prefer the shallow coastal oceans.
