The 2018 Canadian Olympic Figure Skating team might be among the greatest the country has ever seen. Poised to deliver the same level of excitement and excellence as the Games themselves, Canada’s premier figure skating tour will visit 12 cities nationwide beginning in Halifax, NS on Friday, April 27th, and wrapping up in Vancouver, BC on Thursday, May 17th. The man inside the music: Kaelen Klypak helps musicians chase success | Saskatoon StarPhoenix

Saskatoon has always been a vibrant city for music, from well-known artists like One Bad Son and the Sheepdogs to the lesser known — but just as passionate — bands like Dirty & The Perks and W3APONS, who are just getting their feet off the ground.

When local artists need help getting exposure or advice, many turn to Kaelen Klypak, SaskMusic’s project manager for Saskatoon, who has become a jack-of-all-trades in the local music industry, helping artists with all aspects of professional development so they can expand their reach into larger markets.

“Essentially I am pretty much utilized just as a resource,” he says. “So anything an artist wants to chat about, or if they are looking at how to release a record, tour in Europe, if they want to figure out how to get a visa in the U.S., how to do sync publishing — I’m your guy.”

It’s a difficult task to neatly sum up all of Klypak’s responsibilities in a concise package.

Because Saskatoon doesn’t have the same resources for musicians as a city like Los Angeles or Toronto, local artists have always taken a more do-it-yourself approach to getting things done — which means Klypak is used to navigating new challenges on a daily basis.

The Saskatoon native has been musically minded since his days as a kid hanging out at HMV for hours at a time, discovering new music — and likely annoying the employees with his constant request to test drive new CD after new CD at their listening stations.

“I knew they were always upset with me,” he laughs. “They would always have to unwrap the CD and then rewrap it to put it back on the shelf — but that was my only way of artist discovery before there was Napster or MySpace.”

His passion was evident from a young age. Klypak says he knew from Grade 7 that he would spend his life working in the music industry. Though he now does that work behind the scenes, during his years at Marion Graham Collegiate — when he spent much of his free time jamming with his friends on his parents’ acreage — it seemed like those dreams would land him on a stage, chasing rock ‘n’ roll stardom.

He was still playing in bands when he moved to Vancouver after high school to attend Capilano University and earn a diploma in arts and entertainment management.

Upon his graduation, Klypak had the option to move to Toronto or Los Angeles, or to head back home to Saskatoon. He took the riskier move for someone who wanted to work in the music industry, but after seeing the quality of the artists coming out of Saskatchewan at that time and the lack of infrastructure to help them, he decided to head home, he says.

“I would always just be comparing what’s coming out of (Saskatchewan) to what’s coming out in B.C.,” Klypak said.

“B.C. has phenomenal, incredible bands, but they also have the infrastructure like record labels … but for Saskatchewan there really isn’t much of that. You just see the type of calibre of artists that are starting to do things — and what spearheaded that was when the Sheepdogs graced the cover of Rolling Stone. And then I had all these people that I had met through my school program asking me, ‘Who should I be looking out for? Who is the next Sheepdogs?’ ”

He took that excitement as a sign that it was the perfect time to move back and help local bands with his seemingly unending skill set, which includes everything from music publishing to tour managing, in any way possible.

“The way the music industry is shifting so quickly, I think, especially to be from Saskatchewan, I truly feel like you need to have your hands in everything for people to see value in what you do,” he says.

Because of this DIY approach to music in Saskatchewan, his guidance has become a popular option for people trying to pivot their passion for music from a part-time hobby to something that can actually pay the bills.

Gan, the artist behind respectfulchild, a solo instrumental project based in the city, said they would never have made it to the point of playing international shows and making music a main pursuit had it not been for Klypak’s guidance.

Gan, who uses the gender-neutral pronoun ‘they’ and does not use a first name, first met Klypak at Band Swap Saskatoon and remembers he immediately offered his help through SaskMusic should they ever want to take respectfulchild to the next step.

It took Gan about a year to take him up on the offer, but since then he’s helped with grant applications, building and booking a tour, connect with other industry professionals, and helping Gan find and apply to music festivals and showcases in Canada and abroad.

“He is so genuinely excited about everyone’s music and he just is always trying to find opportunities in the most appropriate manner for everyone the best that he can,” Gan says. “He’s not just cheerleading for people because it’s his job, but because he’s actually so genuinely excited about everyone’s music.”

Klypak doesn’t exclusively work with musicians. Marvin Chan has worked with him in both his position as an artist with the band Samurai Champs, where he goes by the stage name Merv xx Gotti, and through his position as the creative director of the Regina-based Trifecta Music Festival and its collective of musicians known as Trifecta Sound Co.

Chan says Trifecta benefited from Klypak’s know-how, especially since he was working in more of a managerial role and was expected to regularly give talks on Trifecta’s goal as a collective.

“It’s really different than just getting up on stage … I’m not just thinking about my needs as an artist,” Chan says.

“So I usually ask Kaelen, ‘How do you present this stuff, how do you talk on a panel well, how do you get to know the delegates before the event happens?’ And he’s always there to answer questions and has been there every step of the way … we always had the experience from the DIY side, but without acknowledging the formal industry side from Kaelen and Mike (Dawson, SaskMusic’s executive director), we definitely wouldn’t be as far as we are now.”

Both Gan and Chan agree that a lot of what makes Klypak special within the industry goes beyond his expertise on both the artistic and business end — they see him as a friend, making it easy to turn to him whenever they might need a push in the right direction.

Chasing those personal connections drives how Klypak’s success in his position at SaskMusic. In an industry saturated by connections made through social media and streaming platforms, he still prefers to sit and talk with people face-to-face whenever possible. Having said that, he notes that being able to adapt to new products and platforms is also an essential part of his job in order to pick up new and emerging trends in music — especially the trends that can help Saskatchewan artists.

“I think we are in the golden period of being able to access music and to discover new bands,” he says. “And that’s just for the love of it; it has nothing to do with work, but I can use that knowledge towards any sort of advising through the SaskMusic side. For example, ambient (music) is really starting to pick up in Germany, so I’d be chatting with respectfulchild about how maybe that would be a market to start looking at.”

Now is one of the most exciting times to be an artist in Saskatchewan, Klypak says. As local bands explode into new markets, like The Dead South has done across Europe, they help shine a spotlight on other provincial exports. Musicians vouch for one another to help secure spots at different venues and festivals around the world.

It’s a huge change to when Klypak was playing shows, telling audiences his band was from California so they weren’t dismissed by the crowd or other fellow musicians. Now, bands are embracing their prairie heritage and continuing to build what he describes as “a cool, sexy brand” around Saskatchewan artists, he says.

He’s happy to keep promoting that brand, and with the Juno Awards heading back to Saskatoon in 2020, the spotlight on local music is bound to continue.

Not only will he help local artists network with other industry professionals next year to get them noticed on a national level — including helping them apply to the Juno Master Class — he’s excited to see people who may not be familiar with the local music scene getting in on the fun, he says.

“I’m pretty amazed at the type of support Saskatchewan will give to artists from here, and I just think that’s just going to grow some more … It makes me wish I was in a band,” he laughs, reminiscing about how much he enjoyed playing at JUNOfest in Regina in 2013.

As the Junos open doors to local artists, Klypak hopes to get a taste of his favourite part of the job: watching the career of someone he’s known from the beginning blow up.

“My heart is just so invested into the local musicians here. I just want to see people do well and succeed in any way possible,” he says.

“So when I see those types of wins … I’m just like, ‘Wow, that’s incredible.’ That’s my favourite part of the job, is that I get to see an artist from when they are booking their very first tour to playing James Corden — it’s just such a huge win for our province.”

Colleen Crowder: Our narrative is that the shutdown is all Donald Trump’s fault plus it’s wrong that PCW Heartland owner Dawn McGill gets to run her shows while the PCW Blue and PCW Red Brand shows…bigger shows…are forced to stay home.

Suave notes that Professor McCarthy from Berkeley, California did follow through on his vow to protest at all three PCW Heartland house shows this weekend. Also protesting at the Friday night Tulsa, Oklahoma show, several wrestlers from the PCW Blue Brand.

Cut to: Professor McCarthy Protests Earlier in the night, Professor McCarthy, joined by the Green World Order (Peta from PETA, GreenPete, ‘Extreme Vegan’ Brock Cole Lee, and PeaceNick, the Young Jerks (Zenk Cryger, James Idahola, and Anna- the foul-mouthed sidekick), the Deep State (One and Two), Emily S. List, and Codee Pink stand outside the Black River Coliseum.

PCW Heartland owner Dawn McGill walks by. The Professor and his Flock start yelling all kinds of nasty invectives at her. McGill rolls her eyes and flips them off as she enters the arena.

Colleen Crowder: Now, was that really necessary?

Johnny Suave: I don’t know. Was it necessary for McCarthy and his goons to shout at Dawn like that?

Colleen Crowder: Yes. That’s freedom of speech.

Suave turns and flips off Crowder. She’s offended and demands an apology.

Johnny Suave: Nope, that’s freedom of speech too.

DAWN McGILL ADDRESSES THE PCW FAITHFUL Dawn’s in the ring and she welcomes everyone to PCW. She says it’s taken a year and a half to get back from when the Establishment took PCW off the air in May 2017 and talks about the hard work that’s gone on behind the scenes to get to tonight. Dawn wants to reiterate something she said over a year and half ago.

Dawn McGill: I said this on May 14th, 2017 and it holds true today. Paul Ryan or Kevin McCarthy whoever in charge there don’t get it. Mitch McConnell, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer don’t get it. I still wonder sometimes if Donald Trump actually gets it.   But let me make this clear to the Establishment…PCW is not here for you. PCW is not here for the Sports Entertainment Corporation and CSPN. PCW is not here for the American Patriots. PCW is not here for the Progressive Alliance. PCW is here for…YOU…the fans. McGill then announces that because of the injury to former champion William Daniels Bryan a Heartland title tournament is being held to crown a new champion. She explains that tournament matches have already taken place at last night’s house show and tonight is the semi-finals. Match one will be Jack Fraiser versus Average Joe. Match two will be SNAFU versus a surprise entrant.

MATCH #1: Jack Fraiser vs. Average Joe Semi-Final of the Heartland Title Tournament They come out quick, working counters and end in a standoff. Fraiser hits a dropkick and drives Average Joe to the floor. They brawl a bit. Both Rendell and Tequila Sheila get involved and eventually the action goes back to the ring.   Back in and Average Joe hits an Average Slam. He covers for 2 but Rendell makes the save. Average Joe with uppercuts, chops, and then a back breaker for 2. Average Joe lays in strikes, but Fraiser fires up and they trade strikes. Fraiser hits a hurricanrana. Average Joe rolls to the floor. Fraiser follows with a moonsault to the floor.

Crowd: PCW!…PCW!…PCW!

Back in and Fraiser hits a missile dropkick and rolls into a German for 2. Average Joe counters the Canadian Crusher, but Fraiser follows with kicks. Average Joe counters by low bridging Fraiser, and follows with a head kick. Body slam countered into a cradle by Fraiser for 2. Fraiser hits another slam but Average Joe kicks out at 2. Fraiser heads up top, but Average Joe crotches him and leaves him in the tree of woe. Average Joe gets a chair and dropkicks it into Fraiser’s face. Fraiser tries to roll out. Average Joe pulls him back in. Fraiser fights him off and hits a double stomp. Average Joe kills Fraiser with a lariat. Average Slam is countered and Fraiser hits a cradled tombstone for a near fall. Johnny Suave: Jack Fraiser gets his biggest PCW win yet. Good back and forth battle but Fraiser is able to counter Average Joe’s Average Slam and hits his finisher to go through to the finals.

Suave is a little cynical about Warren showing up at the show. Crowder sticks up for her.

Colleen Crowder: All Elizabeth Warren is doing is trying to show that she’s an ordinary person…no different than anyone else.

Colleen Crowder: She’s just like everyone else.

Johnny Suave: Oh? Because most ordinary people pretend to be a member of a protected class in order to gain preferential treatment at one of the world’s most prestigious universities.

Crowder immediately objects and calls Suave’s response ‘sexist.’

McAvay holds up the Universal PCW Title belt as the procession makes its way to the ring.

Johnny Suave: Ray McAvay, in his first match back after being on the shelf for ten months, stunned everyone by walking out of Extreme Election Night 2018 as the Universal PCW Champion.

Flanked by the Les Miserables, McAvay gets a standing ovation. He thanks everyone and promises to be the people’s Universal PCW Champion.

Ray McAvay: The wrestlers of the PCW Red and Blue Brands are sitting at home right now because the Progressive Alliance and the American Patriots can’t agree on anything. Blackwell mock congratulates McAvay on the win and is not surprised he is still ‘slumming’ with the Les Miserables.

Charlie Blackwell: Ray, I left the Les Miserables because I wanted to get paid. Pandering to the common people doesn’t get you paid. That’s why I’m with the SEC now. And now that I’m getting paid, I’m turning my attention towards something you have- the Universal PCW Title.

Blackwell throws out a challenge to the new champion and declares that once the PCW Red and Blue shows start up again, he’ll be coming for the belt.

Charlie Blackwell: Until then, you’ll never see me, Charlie Wrestling, in a substandard dump like this ever again.

Blackwell is booed off the stage.

Colleen Crowder: The guy who ‘Narfles Garthoks’…and I still maintain that’s sexist in some shape or form…needs to get moving and take this Hollywood Judas out. Chism let down an entire class of people whose main purpose in life is to make our lives happy by entertaining us.

Johnny Suave: This has been a good one between Chism and SNAFU. I almost think Chism is better in this element than he was at PCW Blue.

Colleen Crowder: PCW Blue…and even Red…are superior to anything that goes on down here.

Johnny Suave: I’m going to disagree with that.

Colleen Crowder: Look at the money the wrestlers make. Look at the venues the wrestlers work at. This is why PCW CEO Trump needs to drop this whole ‘security enhancement’ idea and get the big time wrestlers back to work.

Johnny Suave: Bigger ain’t necessarily better. And stop parroting Mr. McMann’s talking points.

Solar Experiment Lets Neighbors Trade Energy Among Themselves

Brooklyn is known the world over for things small-batch and local, like designer clogs, craft bourbon and artisanal sauerkraut.

Now, it is trying to add electricity to the list.

In a promising experiment in an affluent swath of the borough, dozens of solar-panel arrays spread across rowhouse rooftops are wired into a growing network. Called the Brooklyn Microgrid, the project is signing up residents and businesses to a virtual trading platform that will allow solar-energy producers to sell excess-electricity credits from their systems to buyers in the group, who may live as close as next door.

The project is still in its early stages — it has just 50 participants thus far — but its implications could be far reaching. The idea is to create a kind of virtual, peer-to-peer energy trading system built on blockchain, the database technology that underlies cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

Zero-waste bloggers: the millennials who can fit a year’s worth of trash in a jar

Kathryn Kellogg, a 25-year-old print shop employee, spends four hours a day on her lifestyle blog Going Zero Waste. She posts on Instagram, engages with Facebook followers, and writes about homemade eyeliner and lip balm, worm composting, and shopping bulk bins – anything to avoid unnecessary waste. Her trash for the past year – anything that hasn’t been composted or recycled – fits in an 8oz jar.

Kellogg is earnest, enthusiastic, and admittedly still figuring out what it means to be zero waste. The aspiring actor has also weathered her fair share of criticism. “I’m not even that big yet and I get so much hate mail,” says Kellogg, who draws 10,000 unique page views a month and has 800 subscribers.

Since the launch of Going Zero Waste in March 2015, she’s been criticized on social media and in private messages for driving and flying, for not installing a grey-water system, and, no joke, for using toilet paper (she does have a bidet, by the way). She’s been chastised by vegans for eating eggs, and one visiting relative walked around Kellogg’s house pointing out anything made of plastic.

She’s also been called out as overly privileged, even though she lives in a modest two-bedroom house in Vallejo, a blue-collar city 32 miles north-east of San Francisco.

Ford’s new room-sized 3D printer upends additive manufacturing as we know it

Like nearly every automaker, Ford is keen to figure out how 3D printing can improve its ability to develop and build new cars. Additive manufacturing holds the promise of shorter lead times, increased customization and lighter weight parts, among other efficiencies. Unsurprisingly, there’s a lot of blue-sky thinking out there, and still not a ton of actionable data. But that’s changing, including at the Ford Motor Company, which has an impressive new tool in its arsenal, the Stratasys Infinite Build 3D Printer. Read more at CNET

Sonic cyber attack shows security holes in ubiquitous sensors

Sound waves could be used to hack into critical sensors in a broad array of technologies including smartphones, automobiles, medical devices and the Internet of Things, University of Michigan research shows.

The new work calls into question the longstanding computer science tenet that software can automatically trust hardware sensors, which feed autonomous systems with fundamental data they need to make decisions.

The inertial sensors involved in this research are known as capacitive MEMS accelerometers. They measure the rate of change in an object’s speed in three dimensions.

It turns out they can be tricked. Led by Kevin Fu, U-M associate professor of computer science and engineering, the team used precisely tuned acoustic tones to deceive 15 different models of accelerometers into registering movement that never occurred. The approach served as a backdoor into the devices—enabling the researchers to control other aspects of the system.

The whirlwind first weeks of the Trump administration, punctuated here in Canada by Quebec’s horrific mosque shooting, have been demoralizing for many. But as we learned in high school physics, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Ricochet has learned that there are currently efforts in at least five major Canadian cities to transform them into “sanctuary cities,” a designation meaning that undocumented residents can access city services without fear of being reported or deported.

There are roughly 300 sanctuary cities, counties and states in the U.S., including New York and Washington, and President Trump has threatened to cut off federal funding for any jurisdiction that doesn’t cooperate with his stated plans to deport undocumented residents. 37 cities have stated or reaffirmed their intention to be sanctuary cities since the election.

There are currently four sanctuary cities in Canada: Toronto, Hamilton, Vancouver and, as of last week, London, Ontario. That number could double in the coming months, as Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Regina and Saskatoon all discuss proposals to offer undocumented immigrants and refugees access without fear.

Montreal and Ottawa will both see motions submitted to their city councils tomorrow. If they pass, Canada’s three largest cities, and its capital, will proudly offer services to undocumented residents.

Call it the Canadian backlash.

Responding to Trump’s ban

While there appears to be little or no coordination between proponents of the idea in different parts of the country, what is common to advocates in all cities are the reasons they cite for taking this action now: The threat of Trump, his Muslim ban and a broader crackdown on immigration and refugees, and the act of terrorism committed in Quebec City.

“Trump really kicked it off. I see that executive order as a return to McCarthyism,” explained Donald Cuccioletta, president of the international NGO Alternatives. “Next we’ll be saying that we won’t let in people from countries where they have darker skin than we do. It’s a slippery slope.”

Cuccioletta recently co-authored an op-ed in Montreal daily Le Devoir advocating for Montreal to become a sanctuary city, and he sees in this moment a “crisis of conscience” that will spur civil society to action.

Last week, Montreal mayor Denis Coderre erroneously tweeted to the new U.S. president that Montreal was already a proud sanctuary city. It is not, but the mayor tweeted Saturday that Montreal would become a sanctuary city at the next city council meeting in February. His office has confirmed to Ricochet that a motion to make Montreal a sanctuary city will be introduced at tomorrow’s Executive Committee meeting.

At a press conference this afternoon, Coderre discussed the idea, saying that he wanted to send a message of solidarity, send the message that refugees are welcome in Montreal, and also send a message to the federal government that they should update the Safe Third-Country Agreement to reflect the growing policy differences between our two countries.

Coderre may soon have company on the sanctuary city bandwagon.

Controversial no more

Toronto was the first city in Canada to become a sanctuary city back in 2013, which at the time was a controversial proposition. Not so last Tuesday, when Toronto city council voted unanimously to reaffirm the city’s sanctuary status in the wake of the Trump travel ban.

In Ottawa, the nation’s capital, city councillor Catherine McKenney plans to introduce a motion Wednesday that would ensure undocumented residents have access to city services without fear of detention or deportation. A spokesperson for Ottawa mayor Jim Watson told Ricochet he would not be commenting until he saw the final text of the motion.

“This is a timely motion,” says Aditya Rao, an organizer with the Ottawa Sanctuary City Network, “because we’re seeing a rise in Islamophobia, in hateful rhetoric, both south of the border and in our own country, and I think a really effective way to counter it is to pass good legislation locally, because ultimately all politics are local.”

Meanwhile in Winnipeg, a rally was held last Friday to call for the city to adopt a sanctuary city policy. Mayor Brian Bowman remains non-committal, but has indicated he’s “open to the idea.”

In Regina and Saskatoon, community meetings have been called in the coming days to discuss the possibility of making Saskatchewan’s two largest cities sanctuaries as well.

All five initiatives appear to have arisen independently of each other, reflecting an emerging Canadian consensus on how cities handle undocumented immigrants. A consensus which stands diametrically opposed to the policies of the new Trump administration.

Sanctuary is easier said than done

Geoff Meggs is a city councillor in Vancouver, and a proponent of last year’s policy change in that city. He told Ricochet that Vancouver’s “access without fear” policy is a “powerful symbol of inclusion to the wider community, which is broadly supported” by city residents. Meggs, however, cautions that it isn’t a simple thing to do, and there are limits to a city’s power.

In Vancouver, city council passed the policy, and then asked all bodies funded by the city to adopt similar policies. So far the parks and library boards have done so, but the biggest challenge has been to see it adopted by the city’s police force, and discussions regarding implementation are still ongoing. The city has guidelines for police in how they work with people in the sex trade, and Meggs sees that as a loose model for what may emerge.

“Our police have been pretty clear. They would prefer that anyone with precarious status feel comfortable coming forward to the police to support public safety, and protect people in danger. However they do have relationships with the CBSA … and sorting through those issues has been complex.”

Meggs stresses that for a sanctuary city policy to have teeth it must include the police, and that’s why his city is working to find common ground with them.

In Ottawa, Rao argues that a feel-good, symbolic motion that does not include an implementation plan is worse than nothing because it may give undocumented people a false sense of security.

“It’s not enough to pass a symbolic motion. In fact, a symbolic motion could do more harm than good. We’re asking for an implementation strategy, we’re asking for a timeline, and we’re asking for a report back to the public. Access without fear cannot exist if the motion has no teeth.”

Rao underlines that the motion’s passage through city council is not assured, and that pressure from city residents on their elected councillors and mayor will be critical to seeing a meaningful resolution adopted.

Sanctuary cities are only the beginning

It’s all part of a frenzy of recent activity from those seeking to push back against the fear and hatred espoused by Trump and the alt-right internationally. Hate that finds its expression here in Canada in the words of tabloid pundits and demagogues, and ultimately in the actions of the white supremacist who killed six people on a cold January night in Quebec City.

In Montreal, a group of prominent Quebecers are planning a press conference Wednesday morning to relaunch the call for a provincial commission of inquiry into systemic racism. Premier Couillard has thus far resisted that call, arguing that such an inquiry is unnecessary. But the pressure may now prove to be more than he can bear.

Also on Wednesday, a coalition of Muslim groups are holding a press conference on Parliament Hill seeking action from all levels of government to combat Islamophobia and all forms of systemic racism and discrimination.

For Vancouver councillor Meggs, it’s reassuring to see the sanctuary city movement take off across Canada now — in the Trump era.

“It’s symptomatic of how broad the public support is for that approach, right across Canada, and it’s a reassuring sign about Canadians generally and their desire to affirm solidarity with people who are living in precarious and marginalized conditions in terms of their status.”

Second Cup Coffee Co. Signs Cannabis Deal in Canada

Founded in 1975, The Second Cup Ltd. is a leading Canadian specialty coffee retailer, operating franchised and company-owned Second Cup Coffee Co. cafes across the nation. The company’s vision is to be the Canadian specialty coffee brand of choice across Canada, committed to superior quality, innovation and profitable growth.

Now it’s looking to grow in an unexpected fashion, announcing on Thursday it intends to convert some of its coffee shops into cannabis dispensaries. It’s partnering with marijuana clinic operator National Access Cannabis (NAC) to develop and operate a network of recreational pot stores across Canada.

Coffee Culture Meets Pot Culture

The recreational (vs. medical) cannabis dispensaries will start rolling out in Western Canada and move east to other Canadian provinces, where the drug is expected to soon be legal. “The millennial cohort is really tied into the whole coffee culture,” NPD Group  executive director Robert Carter told the CBC. “And branding from Second Cup with gourmet coffee may give some credibility to cannabis.”

The NAC-branded dispensaries stores will initially be located across Western Canada, expanding to include additional provinces where legally permissible. NAC will apply for provincial retail licenses, where legally permissible, to dispense cannabis products. Once licensed, it will work with Second Cup and its franchisees to construct retail stores carrying cannabis products.

It’s possible that certain current Second Cup coffee shops would be converted into cannabis stores. “We’ll look to work with Second Cup to license select storefronts, utilizing our proven business model to deliver secure, safe and responsible access,” NAC’s CEO Mark Goliger told the CBC. In addition to approval from provincial regulators, the companies must secure the approval of the applicable franchisee and each property’s landlord.

Cannabis in Canada

The Canadian government is on track to legalize recreational cannabis this summer, but is leaving the logistics of how and where it can be sold to provincial regulators. Many provinces (including Ontario) are opting to go with government-controlled monopolies, but some—including British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba—plan to allow some form of cannabis sales by private retailers. A consortium including NAC has already been approved by the Manitoba government to handle retail sales once they become legal, one of four retail groups to receive the designation.

A Premium Joint Partnership

“With exceptional quality real estate located across Canada, our alliance with Second Cup will offer consumers access to quality cannabis products and the superior service in the comfortable setting they’ve come to expect from NAC,” Goliger stated in a press release.

“This relationship allows us to quickly expand our footprint in proven high-traffic retail locations across Canada. With an initial focus on Western Canada, we’ll look to work with Second Cup to license select storefronts, utilizing our proven business model to deliver secure, safe and responsible access.”

“NAC has developed a strong reputation as a leading operator in the cannabis industry. This strategic relationship provides Second Cup with a great opportunity to leverage our select real estate assets to increase value for shareholders and franchisee partners. At the same time, we remain focused on growing our Second Cup brand and sales through continued product innovation and expanding our network across Canada,” said Garry Macdonald, Second Cup’s President & CEO.

There are currently 296 Second Cup locations across Canada; NAC has nine locations in six provinces, including three in Calgary and one each in Victoria, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa and Halifax. The joint partnership follows Canada’s biggest drugstore retailer, Shoppers Drug Mart, signing a medical marijuana supply deal with Aurora Cannabis.

Second Cup shares soared 29% (to $3.54) at the closing bell on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Thursday, while National Access Cannabis rose 12% to $1.02.
