2017 Monthly Book Recommendations:
December Book Recommendation
A Winter Book, by Tove Jansson
A Winter Book collection of some of Tove Jansson’s best loved and most famous stories. Drawn from youth and older age, and spanning most of the twentieth century, this newly translated selection provides a thrilling showcase of the great Finnish writer’s prose, scattered with insights and home truths. It has been selected and is introduced by Ali Smith, and there are afterwords by Philip Pullman, Esther Freud and Frank Cottrell Boyce. The Winter Book features thirteen stories from Tove Jansson’s first book for adults, The Sculptor’s Daughter (1968) along with seven of her most cherished later stories (from 1971 to 1996), translated into English and published here for the first time.
the-modern-typewriter says: So, I have two reasons for recommending this book now, aside from the fact that it's quietly beautiful. 1) It's a perfect book for reading in December, as the title of the book might suggest. 2) Finland has it's 100 Anniversary of Independence on Wednesday 6th December, so what better way to celebrate than by recommending you one of my favourite Finnish authors! Tove Jansson is most famous for writing The Moomins (my love, my childhood) but has written and illustrated a number of creative works throughout her life. This book is beautifully written and somehow so very Finnish, and I found it really wrapped me up in the feeling of winter. It's lovely.
If you liked this try/you might like this if you liked: The Summer Book, by Tove Jansson, the various Moomin novels and comics by Tove Jansson, When God Was A Rabbit or A Year of Marvellous Ways by Sarah Winman as her work has the same feeling of quiet and expansive loveliness.
2017 Monthly Books Recs: December: A Winter Book, by Tove Jansson November: A Darker Shade of Magic, by V.E Swchab October: Confessions of a Sociopath, by M.E Thomas September: The Song of Achilles, by Madeleine Miller August: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, by Michael Chabon July: Kissing the Witch: Old Tales in New Skins, by Emma Donoghue June: If We Were Villains, by M.L Rio.

System of a Down:  The Twelve Year Hypnotize Album Anniversary
The debate of “Who has a longer and more anticipated wait on a new album, System of a Down or Tool?” is always a topic me and fellow journalism friends, toss around every week. However, in terms of wait, the last Tool album 10,000 Days was on April 28th, 2006, while System of a Down released Hypnotize November 22nd, 2005, an almost 5 month difference. Not much in time, but it sure feels like it. Wednesday marks the 12th year of the silence of the Armenian-American rock band, and collectively have sold over 40 million records worldwide, and earned many awards and nominations, including a Grammy for the single “B.Y.O.B,” and have topped the Billboard 200 three times. The style of bombastic riffs, melodic vocals, and cryptic lyrics is still debated on what genre exactly they possess. Most choose “Art Rock” or “Avant-Garde Rock,” but some think this is a new genre entirely, with the buzzword “Soad (Short for the band name) Core.” For us SOAD fans, we miss the band, and they have been claiming a new album for years now, in fashion of Tool, besides the fact Tool is now making progress. The Armenian rockers are touring Europe, while the American crowds pile up waiting for their return.
System of a Down was originally formed in Los Angeles, California, after members Daron Malakian and Serj Tankian dissolved their previous project Soil. The returned to the studio, where the previous recruit from Soil Shavo Odadjian as manager, but was later moved to the bassist position. From there, they recorded demos with drummer Andy Khachaturian, but before they performed, he injured his hand and could not play. This led to the introduction of John Dolmayan, and the full lineup was complete, and the band began touring locally. Ironically, all members went to the same predominantly Armenian school, but the age difference led them to not meet for a long while. After the first show, they recorded the official demo, while not publically release, made its way onto file sharing sites. Finally, in 1997, famed rock producer Rick Rubin caught the band, and signed them to American/Columbian Records.
Through 1998 until 2005, the band released 5 albums, two being a dual record, and one being leaked unfinished songs that the band humorously named Steal This Album!. Numerous chart-topping hits were written, with many coming from their most successful album Toxicity, and the 6th track being “Chop Suey!” hitting 640 million view on Youtube. Although, this song was apart of the tracklist of forbidden songs to be played on the radio after the events of September 11th, 2001, along with Aerials, and was even renamed to “Chop Suey!” due to the previous song title being “Suicide.” Over 40 songs were written for Toxicity alone, and many being inspired by Daron Malakian and his fascination with Charles Manson’s mind and philosophies. After the death of Manson earlier this week, Malakian felt sorrowful for his death and expressed this on his social media, leading to him being labeled as a sympathizer. He retaliated by stating in a lengthy post,
"Let me try to explain...I don't back the murderer Charles Manson, I back his art and his views on social and environmental issues. Sometimes talented people do bad things...OJ Simpson killed his wife, which is horrible. But you can't deny the fact that he was one of the best football players in history. So there is the murderer OJ and the football OJ... My family was in the Armenian Genocide where millions of Armenians were slaughtered by the Turkish government and Turkish soldiers. But I still enjoy Turkish music, Turkish art, and I have Turkish friends who probably had grandparents who were Turkish soldiers during the genocide." You can read more on his controversial outlook on Blabbermouth.com.
Since the release of Hypnotize, the members have other endeavors they have taken part in, frontman Serj Tankian released a film score for the films ”Intent to Destroy” and “Furious,” and has his own solo projects, releasing the critically acclaimed Elect the Dead, and even adapting the tracks into an orchestral performance. John Dolmayan has worked with music less but founded a high end comic book store in Las Vegas under the name Torpedo Comics. Shavo Odadjian has been working with other artists and continues to DJ and record. Daron Malakian formed Scars on Broadway, which is now inactive, and is currently working on new material, but remains the most silent.
Since the final record of the dual release, many question the dedication of the band members, who all but Tankian has commented on. Odadjian, in a facebook post, blamed Tankian holding them back, and even asked fans how they would feel about a new vocalist. Due to this, the band Facebook page claimed this was not so, creating a split in fans, and continues to tour, but not produce any new material. The eager fans await any news on the topic, or at least a tour of the USA, but these are on hold as of now, and fans are starting to become less and less excited on news about the album, and some have even give up hope on the release even coming to fruition. However, many fans still believe in this to this day, and now that 2017 is almost over, the rumored year, some speculate the new album will be in 2018. Overall, fans just want something new, interesting, and intriguing to listen to once again, and hope one day that some new tracks with topics ranging from politics to pornography can come from the band and sell millions once again.

#TheWalkingDead season 8 Death Watch; Who will it be?
Wednesday, September 6th, 2017
*WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS CONTENT FROM SEASON 7, POTENTIAL SPOILERS FROM SEASON 8 AND SPOILERS FROM ROBERT KIRKMAN's COMICS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED*
Season 7 of AMC's The Walking Dead was definitely one of the hardest seasons to watch, many fans becoming emotionally and mentally drained, excited and becoming instilled with fear for many. Many beloved characters died, some we hated died, and others we chanted for death. But many of the cast are suggesting that season 8 "feels like our show, again". What exactly does that mean? Blood, death and sheer chaos.
Today, I am here to bring upon a list of PERSONAL deaths that could and more or less will happen. My theories are based on FACTS and PERSONAL THOUGHTS.
 Death Watch Theory #1; Morgan
In the comics, Morgan dies in the war against the Saviors. So far in the television series, he's survived. But for how long? Morgan, like a handful of others, are running on borrowed time. This means in my words, that the character(s) evolved are running on the writers, therefore may be killed off at any given time. Morgan is a highly likely candidate for a death in the eight season.
Death Watch Theory #2; Carol
Carol has been living on burrowed time since season 3-4, essentially living on her daughter's time instead of her own. We have seen Carol go through many struggles since the inception of the show, becoming something entirely better than her role in the comics which was mentally weak.  In the show, Carol is involved with the King of The Kingdom but in the comics, it's Michonne. Carol is my next candidate for a death in the eight season.
Death Watch Theory #3: Ezekiel
In the comics, Ezekiel dies in the War against the Saviors, longer in than Morgan. But, in the series (so far), he and his beloved tiger, Shiva, still remain. In the finale, we saw the Kingdomers come to the Alexandrians' help as the Saviors reigned down. But, Ezekiel is such an imperative character to many, they may not kill him off...yet. Ezekiel is my third candidate for a death this coming season.
Death Theory #4; Rosita
Rosita does not die in the war against the Saviors in the comics, but she does against the Whisperers (another group to come after the Saviors War). But given the circumstances, she may die earlier than planned. Rosita is head strong, and she just recently lost many who she loved and one betrayed her for the wrong side. Right now, she's emotionally unstable, which could result in her dying this season. But, Negan may have other plans, he may want to wife her, instead of kill her unless he has no other choice. Rosita is my forth Death Theory for the eight season.
Death Theory #5; Daryl
Daryl is a television series only character. Originally, it was only Merle but then Daryl was created. Daryl is a fan favorite and has been since season 1. As the seasons carried on, we saw Daryl both lighten then darken again after Beth. But this past season, after Glenn, Daryl has been regaining himself. The first half of the season, he was weak, beaten and mentally unstable. But after Jesus rescued him, Daryl became Daryl again. Daryl has a rather large target between his eyes, though. Negan wants his Daryl back, preferably alive, but he may settle for him being dead. He's a threat and he needs that threat neutralized. Daryl is a midway candidate for a season 8 death.
Death Theory #6; Eugene
In the current comics, Dr. Eugene Porter is still very much alive and doing well. Same in the show, only its a little different. In the comics, Eugene was kidnapped by The Saviors and beaten, but he escaped amidst the war. But in the show, he's traded sides. He is now calling himself a Savior, not a Survivor. To fans, it appears our favorite hair has turned against us. But some are thinking it's a ploy. Personally, I don't. The crew of The Walking Dead are known for shaking things up. This is why I believe Eugene could die this season. I believe there is a high possibility for Eugene to be a Season 8 Death.
Death Theory #7; Judith
Judith, like Carol and Morgan, are living on burrowed time. Judith, like Lori, did not make it out of the prison in the comics when the Governor and his men attacked. Last season, Negan discovered little Judith and raised many eyebrows while doing so. The villain is known for having compassion but he's known specifically for his savage side. He will kill anything living, breathing or dead if it crosses him. Or, even if it means leverage. Little baby Judith would be a devastating impact to many fans, but it would be a way for Negan to get under Rick's skin...even deeper than he already has. Judith is a moderate Death candidate for the new season.
Death Theory #8; Carl
Carl Grimes has become one of the worst characters next to Daryl and his father, Rick. But in the world of the dead, surprise and violence is everything. In the comics, he is still alive. In the series, he is still alive. But will he last? Given some factors, the actor Chandler Riggs will be beginning college in the fall. This may impact the show and the character as a whole. Will Negan guy succeed in lobbying Carl's head off? Carl is a moderate Death Candidate for this season.
What did you think of my theories? Do you agree or disagree? Am I spot on or a universe a way? Let me know below! What are YOUR theories for this coming season? I want to know, let me know In the comments below!

Multi-award-winning comedy writer, actor and author Miranda Hart, will make her West End Theatre debut as Miss Hannigan in Annie opening in the West End in May 2017. Previews at the Piccadilly Theatre will begin on 23rd May 2017 with opening night on 5th June 2017. The production, directed by Nikolai Foster, will be produced by Michael Harrison and David Ian. Further casting will be announced shortly.
Miranda Hart said: “Miss Hannigan is a dream role, and certainly has been for me, but I never thought it would be a reality. But here we are and I have a newly found musical theatre-esque spring in my step! I hope people will leave the theatre feeling life is a little better and dreamier and jollier after watching it, as much as we feel that performing it. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some leg-warmers to put on…”
Public booking for Annie opens on Monday 27th February 2017 at 10am with the production initially booking to 6th January 2018. Children’s tickets will be half price for Monday to Thursday performances (see listings information below).
Set in 1930s New York during The Great Depression, brave young Annie is forced to live a life of misery and torment at Miss Hannigan’s orphanage. Her luck changes when she is chosen to spend Christmas at the residence of famous billionaire, Oliver Warbucks. Meanwhile, spiteful Miss Hannigan has other ideas and hatches a plan to spoil Annie’s search for her true family…
Annie has book by Thomas Meehan adapted from the comic strip Little Orphan Annie, music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin. The West End production will have sets and costumes designed by Colin Richmond, choreography by Nick Winston, lighting by Ben Cracknell, sound design by Richard Brooker and orchestration and musical direction by George Dyer.
Foster’s production arrives in the West End 40 years after the original Broadway production opened in 1977 and received seven Tony awards including the Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. The last West End production of Annie opened at the Victoria Palace Theatre in 1998. In 1982, Annie was adapted for the big screen directed by John Huston with a cast including Carol Burnett, Bernadette Peters and Albert Finney and in 2014 a further feature film was released, directed by Will Gluck, with a cast including Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx. The much-loved score includes the classics It’s A Hard Knock Life, Tomorrow and Easy Street.
Miranda Hart is best known on television for her hugely successful, semi-auto-biographical and multi-award-wining BBC sitcom Miranda which ran from 2009 for 3 series and 2 specials. She was the recipient of a BAFTA nomination, an NTA Award and two TV Choice Awards for her performance as Chummy in the BBC television drama Call the Midwife. In 2014 she completed her first sell out stand-up arena tour My, What I Call, Live Show culminating in five shows at London’s 02 Arena. As a best-selling author her first book Is It Just Me? was the biggest selling non-fiction hardback of 2013 winning Non-Fiction Book of the Year at The National Book Awards. She followed this in 2014 with The Best of Miranda and last year released her third book Peggy and Me. Her theatre credits include Cruising for The Bush Theatre, Come Out Eli for Battersea Arts Centre, All About Me for Soho Theatre as well as multiple appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Her film credits include Spy, The Infidel, Magicians as well as upcoming The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018).
Nikolai Foster is Artistic Director at Curve. Since taking up his post in 2015, he has directed Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey’s Grease, Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, Spring Awakening, Legally Blonde, Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s (also Theatre Royal Haymarket and on tour nationally), Roald Dahl’s The Witches, adapted by David Wood, Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, Shakespeare’s Richard III, Jonathan Harvey’s Beautiful Thing and Timberlake Wertenbaker’s Our Country’s Good, a performance to celebrate the reveal of the tomb of King Richard III at Leicester Cathedral.
