Virgil Alexander posted:
Forwarded to me by an executive accountant friend: WHO AND WHAT IS—BLACK LIVES MATTER?
Black Lives Matter might be viewed as a grassroots movement of concerned people gathering together. It is much more.
Black Lives Matter is a corporation whose real name is Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation (BLMGNF). (Yep, it's one of those capitalistic corporations they profess to hate.)
The following information is on their web site. It's a nationwide corporation! BLMGNF has chapters in Boston, Chicago, Washington DC, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Lansing, Long Beach, Memphis, Nashville, New York City, Philadelphia, South Bend and in Canada in Toronto, Vancouver, and Waterloo. (If you were impressed by how all those recent riots erupted simultaneously from a grassroots movement--well, maybe it's not so grassroots.)
BLMGNF is a not-for-profit corporation--but it's not tax exempt, so donations are not tax deductible. Except if you go to its website and want to donate, you're transferred to 'ActBlue Charities' which will take your donation, give you a tax deduction, and then distribute the money you gave to BLMGNF. Sort of . . .
What is ActBlue?
The following is taken directly from ActBlue’s web page: “Our platform is available to Democratic candidates and committees, progressive organizations, and nonprofits that share our values for no cost besides a 3.95% processing fee on donations. And we operate as a conduit, which means donations made through ActBlue to a campaign or organization are considered individual donations.”
ActBlue consists of three parts: ActBlue Charities facilitates donations to left-of-center 501(c)(3) nonprofits; Act Blue Civics is its 501(c)(4) affiliate; ActBlue is a 527 Political Action Committee. These three have raised over $5 billion in the sixteen years since it started. If it's 3.95% transaction fee has indeed been applied to all donations, that equates to over $197 million!
ActBlue is thus a Democratic Party front affiliated with BLMGNF. If only it was that simple and stopped there.
Per Business Insider Australia: “ActBlue . . . distributes the money raised to Thousand Currents, which is then granted to Black Lives Matter.”
So, what, you ask, is Thousand Currents (formerly the International Development Exchange)?
Again, per Business insider Australia: “Thousand Currents is a 501(3)(c) non-profit that provides grants to organizations that are . . . developing alternative economic models." (Is anarchy now an alternative economic model?)
"Thousand Currents essentially acts as a quasi-manager for Black Lives Matter: ‘It provides administrative and back office support, including finance, accounting, grants management, insurance, human resources, legal and compliance,’ (Executive Director Solome) Lemma said.” (Finance, insurance, human resources, legal and compliance? It sounds like General Motors!)
What is the significance of the above?
Black Lives Matter is not some fly-by-night fad that is going to loot and destroy and then disappear into the ash heap of history. It's a multi-corporation, big business that is heavily associated with and supports the Democratic Party--and it's here to stay. Arguing whether Black Lives or All Lives Matter is meaningless and distracts from what it's trying to achieve. It's a left-wing political movement that will have a significant impact on Democratic Party programs for the foreseeable future.
Socialism and Communism are intimately linked to these efforts. The U.S. Constitution and especially the Bill of Rights have no place in their plans. Patrisse Cullors, one of Black Lives Matter’s cofounders is widely quoted as saying, “We are trained Marxists.”
The president of Greater New York Black Lives Matter said that if the movement fails to achieve meaningful change during nationwide protests, they will “burn down this system.” Not the peaceful change we celebrate under our Constitution but violent change. For those of us who like our Constitution, this is a challenge thrown directly in our faces.
If you've been wondering why politicians have danced around criticizing Black Lives Matter, now you know.

18. Time publications reflect the great public interest in baseball by devoting substantial editorial resources and news coverage to baseball.
19. The public interest in professional baseball extends far beyond the results or play-by-play descriptions of the games. For example, sports fans want to know how the players think how they played in a particular game, how the players relate to one another and to their owners, coaches and manager and, in general, what the players are like as human beings.
20. In response to that public interest and to increase fan interest and attendance, defendants Kuhn, MacPhail and the New York Yankees encourage and, together with the City, profit from news coverage going beyond the mere results of the games. Accordingly, they have permitted reporters access to players in the clubhouses of major league baseball teams immediately after professional baseball games.
21. Access to the clubhouses of major league baseball teams immediately after games, however, has been and continues to be limited to male reporters. Accredited female reporters, including plaintiff Ludtke, have been and continue to be barred from such access solely because of their sex.

A recent move by the Yeshiva University administration has revealed fractures among students, faculty and staff members regarding what LGBTQ inclusion on campus should look like and who has the right to decide. Administrators at the Modern Orthodox Jewish institution announced plans two weeks ago to create a new LGBTQ support club, sanctioned by the university and its rabbis. At the same time, the university continues to refuse to recognize the existing LGBTQ club formed by students, the YU Pride Alliance. The two have been mired in a messy and ongoing lawsuit for over a year.
The new club, which currently has no students and has yet to be formed, would be called Kol Yisrael Areivim, a Hebrew phrase meaning “all Jews are responsible for one another.” The announcement says the club will be a place for LGBTQ students to “gather, share their experiences, host events, and support one another while benefiting from the full resources of the Yeshiva community—all within the framework of Halacha [Jewish law]—as all other student clubs.”
“We are eager to support and facilitate the religious growth and personal life journeys of all of our students to lead authentic Torah lives, and we hope that this Torah-based initiative with a new student club tailored to Yeshiva’s undergraduate LGBTQ students will provide them with meaningful support to do so,” Rabbi Ari Berman, the university’s president, said in the announcement. (Yeshiva administrators declined a request for comment through a university spokesperson.)
Reactions to the announcement ranged from celebration to outrage to head scratching.
Supporters of the university-sanctioned club say it is an unprecedented step for the Orthodox institution, one that should be welcomed as an effort to support LGBTQ students within the university’s religious framework. They argue rabbinic approval of the club quiets dissenting voices in a student body that skews conservative.
Others, including the YU Pride Alliance itself, object to a student club started by administrators and say the university continues to deny LGBTQ students what they’ve demanded in court—a club of their own, run by them and supported like any other on campus. The group also argued against claims in the recent announcement that their club has ties to a national movement that “promotes activities that conflict with Torah laws and values.” They say their club is a support group, just like the new one proposed.
“Unfortunately, the administration created this new initiative alone, without any student input, student participation, or student leadership,” says a written response from the YU Pride Alliance. “It therefore falls short of the simple request we have been making for years—an LGBTQ student club on equal footing as all other student clubs.”
“If YU is genuine in its offer to provide these resources to the actual LGBTQ student club—not the shell of one it created—there is a path forward.”
The Kol Yisrael Areivim club is the latest development in an ongoing saga. The YU Pride Alliance lodged a discrimination lawsuit against the university in April 2021. They argued the university is subject to New York City human rights law and is not a religious corporation, under New York law, and can’t bar an LGBTQ club as a result. After a New York trial court judge ruled in the club’s favor in June, the university requested permission from the U.S. Supreme Court to not recognize the club until the end of the appeals process. The Supreme Court justices decided in a 5-to-4 vote this September that the university must first go through the state courts before they’ll consider the case and that the university would have to recognize the club in the meantime.
The university then sent an email to students saying YU would “hold off on” on all student club activities during the High Holiday season while the university “immediately takes steps to follow the roadmap provided by the US Supreme Court to protect YU’s religious freedom.” In response, the YU Pride Alliance agreed to a temporary stay, which grants the university permission not to recognize the group until court proceedings are over. The case will now continue to be hashed out in the New York court system. The university is being represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, a Washington, D.C., law firm focused on religious freedom issues.
The YU Pride Alliance continues to operate without the blessing of the university. The group has an active board of student leaders and hosts off-campus events such as book clubs and community service projects, but it doesn’t receive any university funding and has no meeting space on campus.
A Range of Reactions
Administrators said in their announcement that the framework for the new club “reflects input and perspectives from private conversations with current and past undergraduate LGBTQ students.”
Mordechai Levovitz, a Yeshiva University alum and clinical director of Jewish Queer Youth, a support organization for Orthodox LGBTQ young people, doesn’t buy it. He said LGBTQ students and alumni were reaching out to one other after the announcement to figure out who had been consulted about the new club. He couldn’t find anyone. He said even staff members at the university counseling office and office of student life appeared to be in the dark.
“It seems suspect,” Levovitz said. “It seems kind of silly. It borders on being foolish. And certainly it lacks the basic respect for the issues at hand here, which are that LGBTQ young people in nonaccepting environments are really at risk for higher levels of suicide and self-harm and mental illness and anguish and all of these really real things.”
He believes the rabbis were well intentioned in sanctioning the club, but the new club felt more like a stunt to make a point in the lawsuit than a genuine effort to support students, given that the students feeling discriminated against weren’t involved in the planning or forming of the new club as far as he can tell. He also is unsure how the new club differs from the original.
Left unsaid in this very public debate is that many believe this move is about whether or not the club supports students having sex, given that a dominant Orthodox interpretation of Jewish law prohibits same-sex sexual relationships and discourages premarital sex. Some supporters of the existing LGBTQ club believe this was the subtext of the university’s announcement that the new club will help LGBTQ students “navigating the formidable challenges that they face in living a fully committed, uncompromisingly authentic halachic life within Orthodox communities.” Administrators also contended that the original club is part of a wider movement that supports non-Torah ideals.
But “nowhere in any of the Pride Alliance’s mission statements does it talk about sex or relationships,” Levovitz said. “It has to do with basically everything this rabbinic club seems to want—supporting students, creating a sense of comradery, creating a safe space on campus where queer students can talk about things that are pertaining to them, maybe bringing in some speakers, creating some events.”
A rabbinical student at Yeshiva, who’s disappointed with the administration’s stance toward the YU Pride Alliance, said while many of his classmates view the group as encouraging of LGBTQ students having sex, the club has never advocated such stances. The rabbinical student, who requested anonymity, said making LGBTQ students feel respected and accepted, as YU Pride Alliance contends, is different than pretending religious strictures don’t exist.
“I don’t think [leaders of the YU Pride Alliance] are going to say, ‘everyone should be celibate’ … I don’t think anybody who’s honest with themselves says that,” he said. “But there’s a big difference between saying you have to do what you have to do because you’re a human being and saying it’s mutar [religiously permitted].”
The rabbinical student has a sibling who came out as gay and decided to have nothing to do with Judaism after being ostracized in their religious community. The university’s ongoing lawsuit and its unwillingness to work with existing LGBTQ student leaders feels personal to him, he said.
“How can I … say I care about you … and I love you and I don’t want anybody else to be treated the same way as you when the institution that I’m getting my smicha [rabbinic ordination] from is sort of completely undermining that?” he said. “Part of the reason I’m becoming a rabbi is because I believe everybody deserves a connection to HaKadosh Baruch Hu [God] and we should do our best to include people in our communities, even if it’s hard.”
He’s worried about the effects of the lawsuit on his family relationships as well as his job prospects.
“The first thing anybody is going to say when you’re a YU rabbi, you’re a YU graduate, you went to one of the graduate schools, people are going to say, ‘Oh, are you a homophobe?’” he said. “It would make me reticent about sending my kids to YU or encouraging my students to go to YU because they have to answer the question for a decision they had no say in.”
Faculty members share similar concerns that the lawsuit casts a pall on their academic pursuits and on the public image of the university. Abraham Ravid, co-chair of the Yeshiva University Faculty Council, said the lawsuit inevitably comes up when he’s at academic conferences and when graduate students interview for jobs. He added that while the majority of faculty members support the YU Pride Alliance, and have signed petitions saying so, there are divisions within the council on the issue, which has been a “distraction” to other work he wants to get done.
He wishes the new club had been proposed to members of the YU Pride Alliance as a compromise before the lawsuit was filed.
He’s also concerned about the negative news coverage the controversy over the club has generated, instead of “positive news and stories about achievements by scholars, either on the religious or secular side.”
“It’s distressing to most of us,” he said.
Natan Ehrenreich, a senior at the university, believes the views of faculty members and supporters of the YU Pride Alliance don’t necessarily represent most of the student body. He said the framing of YU’s lawsuit as university leaders and rabbis fighting the will of the student body is “entirely wrong.”
“I think there is a silent majority of students on campus who are deferring to the university and the Roshei Yeshiva [the rabbis] for religious judgment,” he said. “I think one side is a lot louder than the other. I think people who supported the club are a lot louder.”
He views the Kol Yisrael Areivim club as a move toward greater inclusivity and believes it was a good-faith effort by the rabbis to support the needs of students. But he also believes it’s important to religious liberty that the university’s rabbinic authorities decide the LGBTQ club’s mission and scope, and that’s why he supports YU’s stance in the ongoing lawsuit.
“I want to see this case framed as an issue of pluralism, that’s the way I see it,” he said. “I see it as populations who disagree with one another in this country able to have institutions that disagree with one another.”
Fighting the Culture War
There are also divisions over the ways in which non-Jewish organizations have thrown their support behind the university in this case. The rabbinical student who did not want to be identified noted that a number of Christian organizations submitted amicus briefs on the institution’s behalf, including the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities, the Association of Classical Christian Schools, and the Archdiocese of New York.
“It’s not YU’s job to fight the culture war,” he said.
Levovitz is also disturbed by the involvement of the Becket Fund, the religious freedom law firm, and the way this dispute within “a tiny university of a tiny people” has turned into a national religious liberty fight.
“There’s also kind of a systemic issue here of Christianity, particularly right-wing Christianity, using Judaism and the Jewish community for their own means,” he said. “Every time this goes to press, every time this goes to the Supreme Court, the Becket Fund looks like heroes to the Christian right.”
The firm represented Hobby Lobby, the arts and crafts company that stopped offering insurance coverage for contraceptives to employees, and initially raised concerns about how recognizing same-sex marriage would affect religious freedom nationally. Eric Baxter, vice president and senior counsel at the Becket Fund, said the firm is purely secular and nonpartisan and takes on all kinds of First Amendment cases, including many on behalf of religious minorities. He said he’s currently representing Muslims in the U.S. Navy who want to keep their beards, Sikhs in the U.S. Marines who want to wear their turbans and Native Americans in Oregon who want sacred lands restored. The Becket Fund takes all of its cases pro bono and is funded by private donors.
“A win for Yeshiva in this case is a win for people of all religious traditions,” he said. “The law that protects one faith protects every other faith on the same basis.”
Ehrenreich, the senior at Yeshiva, agreed that these alliances are being made outside the Jewish world because the university and other entities concerned about religious liberty have genuine interests in common.
A Yeshiva administrator who is also a graduate student, and who did not want to be identified, said the student body is “very, very split” right now and that the new club could be a much-needed and sincere compromise—and better than having no LGBTQ supports. Yeshiva University attracts some conservative-leaning students who go there to be immersed in a religious environment and avoid some of the liberal ideals of a secular campus.
“So this idea that they’re being told you have to be accepting of people you feel don’t follow your religion properly” makes them uneasy, he said. “They’re feeling a little bit pushed out.”
“Both sides are feeling hurt by the discussion that’s going on,” the graduate student said. “Neither side seems to be willing to just sit down and have a discussion about what’s going on and about how to solve the problem without lawyers.”
Levovitz said members of the YU Pride Alliance also came to Yeshiva University for a religious community and education.
“The students in YU are at YU because they love YU,” he said. “They want YU to be better. They want the best for themselves and the university. This is their school. They’re choosing to be there.
“The irony here is there already is a queer organization, a queer community, on campus,” he added. The only difference between the old club and the new one is “they’re not being recognized.”

Unaccompanied migrant children arrived on flights to a rural New York community and local officials said Friday they were given no advance notice by the Biden administration.
Montgomery police chief Paul Arteta and Mayor Steve Brescia joined "Fox & Friends First" to explain what happened when the flights arrived at Orange County Airport from Texas, carrying minors between 13-18 years old.
"I've never seen anything like this before," said Brescia, whose town is located in the Hudson Valley, about 75 miles north of New York City.
MARIST COLLEGE DAD MURDER: SUSPECT THREATENED TO SHOOT MAN IN FACE PRIOR TO NEW YORK ROBBERY
Arteta said officials don't know where the parents are, but the children continued on to other areas of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
Brescia said he wished he had received some alert before the flights arrived.
"They thought that the village or town knew about it and we knew nothing. And there wasn't much we could do about it, unfortunately. But just a little forewarning or little information would have helped us considerably," he told Carley Shimkus.
BIDEN ADMIN RESUMES FLIGHTS TO SUBURBAN NEW YORK: REPORT
Brescia said the leaders in his community were worried about the safety of the children and did not have answers to provide to residents. He said the town would have had to handle the response if "God forbid" the bus that picked up the migrants at the airport was involved in an accident.
Arteta said after "dozens of phone calls" to local officials, they were able to verify that the flight was sanctioned by the Office of Refugee Resettlement within the federal Department of Health and Human Services.
Arteta said officers were alerted by a resident who called to report "suspicious" activity.
"It astounds me," Brescia told Brian Kilmeade on "Fox & Friends" on Friday.
"We're being dumped on and we're not going to put up with it. We hope there's no more flights coming into the airport because we can't handle it. There's not enough security there. There's not enough resources in our community. The taxpayers cannot absorb what they did to us," he said.
Meantime, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is tapping the National Guard to help with New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ migrant tent city, Fox News Digital has confirmed.
The development comes after Adams announced Monday night that the city was relocating its first humanitarian emergency response and relief center for asylum seekers from Orchard Beach, condemned for being flood prone and far from public transportation to Randall's Island.
In the past several months, New York City has seen an influx of more than 16,000 asylum seekers, Adams' office said Monday. But according to figures from Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s office Friday, the southern border state has bused just over 2,900 migrants to New York City since Aug. 5.

What to Expect from Your Salary After MBA: A Simple Guide
Earning an MBA (Master of Business Administration) is a big step towards advancing your career and boosting your income. But just how much can you expect to earn once you have that degree in hand? Let's break it down in simple terms so you can get a clear picture of your potential salary after MBA.
Key Factors That Affect Your Salary After MBA
Earning an MBA can significantly boost your career prospects and salary after MBA. But, several key factors influence how much you can expect to earn:s
Industry Choice: The industry you decide to work in plays a huge role in your salary. For example, if you choose a career in consulting, finance, or technology, you’re likely to see higher salaries. Jobs in consulting often offer starting salaries between $120,000 and $150,000. On the other hand, if you work in the nonprofit sector, your starting salary might be closer to $80,000.
Where You Work: Your salary can also vary depending on your location. Big cities like New York, London, and San Francisco usually offer higher salaries to match the higher cost of living. However, the competition for jobs in these cities can be tougher.
Your Experience: While an MBA certainly boosts your earning potential, your prior work experience also matters. If you already have several years of experience in your field, you can expect a higher starting salary after MBA. If you’re a fresh graduate with little work experience, your salary might be lower to start with, but it can grow quickly as you gain experience.
School Reputation: The reputation of the business school you attend can significantly impact your salary after MBA. Graduates from top schools like Harvard, Stanford, and INSEAD often earn more because of the strong networks, excellent career services, and the prestigious reputation of these institutions.
Job Role: The specific job you take after your MBA is another key factor. Roles in investment banking or private equity, for example, are known for high salaries, often starting above $150,000. Other roles, like marketing or human resources, might offer starting salaries between $90,000 and $120,000.
Average Salary After MBA by Industry
Consulting: Consulting is one of the highest-paying fields for MBA graduates. If you join a top consulting firm like McKinsey, BCG, or Bain, you could start with a salary around $140,000, plus bonuses and other perks, making your total compensation well over $200,000.
Finance: Finance, especially in areas like investment banking or private equity, offers high starting salaries ranging from $120,000 to $150,000. With bonuses, your total earnings could easily exceed $250,000.
Technology: The tech industry is a popular choice for MBA graduates, with companies like Google, Amazon, and Facebook offering competitive salaries. Starting pay in tech usually begins around $120,000, with additional stock options and bonuses.
Healthcare: Healthcare, including pharmaceuticals and biotech, offers good salaries for MBAs. Starting salaries in this field typically range from $110,000 to $130,000, with room for growth.
Nonprofit and Government: While these sectors may not pay as much as the private sector, they still offer meaningful work with starting salaries between $70,000 and $90,000. The rewards here are often more about making a difference than earning a high salary.
How Your Business School Affects Your Salary
The business school you choose can make a big difference in your salary after MBA.
Top-Tier Schools: Graduates from top schools like Harvard, Stanford, and Wharton often see starting salaries over $150,000, especially in high-paying industries like consulting and finance.
Mid-Tier Schools: Graduates from mid-tier schools also earn solid salaries, typically ranging from $90,000 to $120,000, depending on the industry and location.
Lower-Tier Schools: If you graduate from a lower-ranked school, your starting salary might be closer to $70,000 to $90,000. However, with experience and career growth, these salaries can increase significantly.
Tips to Maximize Your Salary After MBA
Build Your Network: Use the networking opportunities during your MBA to connect with alumni, attend industry events, and take advantage of career services. A strong network can help you land high-paying roles.
Negotiate Your Salary: Don’t be afraid to negotiate your starting salary. Employers often expect it, and a successful negotiation can increase your pay significantly. Be sure to research industry standards and prepare to explain why you deserve a higher salary.
Gain Relevant Experience: Internships and special projects during your MBA can make you a more attractive candidate to employers, potentially leading to higher salary offers.
Specialize in In-Demand Areas: Consider focusing on areas like data analytics, fintech, or digital marketing, which are in high demand and often offer higher salaries.
Keep Learning: Stay updated with the latest trends and skills in your industry. This can give you an edge over other candidates and help you command a higher salary.
Conclusion
An MBA can open doors to higher salary after MBA and better job opportunities, but how much you earn depends on several factors, including the industry you choose, your experience, where you work, and the reputation of your business school. By understanding these factors and taking steps to maximize your earning potential, you can make sure your MBA pays off in the long run.

It’s been said that over the span of nine months, the human embryo ascends through a sequence congruent with fifty million years of evolution; that within the first six years of life, the human mind replicates the dream of its five-thousand-year journey from the sand castle cities of ancient Mesopotamia. The figures in the dream have left the signs of their passing in what we know as the historical record, navigational lights flashing across the gulf of time on scraps of papyrus and scratchings in stone, on ships’ logs and bronze coins, as epic poems and totem poles and painted ceilings, in confessions voluntary and coerced, in five-act plays and three-part songs.
The record is our inheritance, the one that Goethe had in mind when he suggested a restructuring of the deal that Satan offered Faust. It isn’t with magic that men make their immortality. They do so with what they’ve learned on their travels across the frontiers of five millennia, salvaging from the ruin of families and the death of cities what they find to be useful or beautiful or true. We have nothing else with which to build the future except the lumber of the past—history exploited as natural resource and applied technology, telling us that the story painted on the old walls and printed in the old books is also our own.
Cicero made the point fifty years before the birth of Christ: “Not to know what happened before one was born is always to be a child.” The American historian, Arthur Schlesinger Jr., made the same point in the essay that served as his epitaph when it was published in the New York Times on January 1, 2007, two months before he died. Under the heading, “Folly’s Antidote,” he prescribed strong doses of history as a cure for “the delusions of omnipotence and omniscience,” akin to those that persuaded the Bush Administration to stage a rerun in Iraq of America’s misadventure in Vietnam. The failure to connect the then with the now Schlesinger diagnosed as an illness which, if left untreated, he thought likely to lead to the death of the American idea. Children unfamiliar with the world in time make easy marks for the dealers in fascist politics and quack religion. The number of people in the United States at the moment who believe in the literal truth of the Book of Revelation exceeds the number of people who lived in all of medieval Christendom.

Tenancy Assistance Options For Landlords
Landlords that own HUD-supported property (or properties with federally-backed mortgages) may be eligible for certain rental assistance. This searchable database can help identify these options.
NLIHC research found that many tenancy assistance and landlords are unaware of these resources. In addition, both tenants and landlords cited complexity around eligibility criteria and application structures as barriers to applying.
One-Shot Deals
A One-Shot Deal is a temporary emergency grant from the city that helps pay back rent so people can stay in their homes. Enhanced one-shot deals can also assist with security deposits, broker’s fees and the first four months of rent. They are not typically meant to cover ongoing rent and HRA will only approve them if they can be shown that the client’s income will sustain them moving forward.
One-Shot Deals are available from the Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the grants help families pay back eviction debt. They can be awarded at an HRA public assistance office or Job Center, a Marshall’s office in housing court, or a city social service agency. Most recipients have to gradually pay the money back, unless they are seniors or receiving disability payments. But the checks make it possible for tenants to stay in their apartments and avoid the costly alternative of homeless shelters, Legal Aid attorneys say.
Charities
Throughout history, private charities have stepped up to help where the government cannot. Catholic Charities and the Salvation Army can both provide emergency assistance with rent, as well as other necessities like utilities. You can learn more about these organizations by calling 2-1-1 or visiting their websites. A charity worth contributing to should have a clear mission and transparent figures about their operations, including how much of your money is going to the actual cause.
New York City residents can apply to the State’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) for financial assistance to cover a portion of their monthly rent and/or utility bills. To determine eligibility, households must complete an online application and include income information as well as specific information about the household’s housing situation (i.e., whether the tenant is a holder of project-based Section 8 or public housing, FHEPS, or other subsidy). If eligible, the funds are disbursed in the order of applications received consistent with State law and program rules.
State & Local Organizations
In addition to federal programs, some states and localities allocate additional funds for tenant-based rental assistance. These supplemental programs can be tailored to specific local needs and priorities.
For example, a Portland, OR program provides short-term rent assistance to households experiencing homelessness or in danger of losing their housing. Eligible households are provided with a one-time stipend that can be used to pay for rent and security deposits, as well as other move-in costs such as application fees or broker’s charges.
The program is jointly administered by Multnomah County, the cities of Portland and Gresham, and Home Forward, a public housing agency. This allows the program to target families who are most at risk of homelessness, and to prioritize applicants based on their needs. Homeowners may also qualify for homeownership support services. Applicants must be income eligible to receive these services. The statewide homelessness resource center 2-1-1 can help you find resources in your community.
Other Options
There are private charities that provide rental assistance and eviction prevention, as well as local organizations that offer free legal help and affordable apartments. These groups focus on preventing homelessness and helping families and single adults find an apartment as soon as possible, and address landlord harassment and unfair rent increases.
Those with Section 8 vouchers, public housing or other types of limited-income rental assistance may be able to obtain relief from back rent through their local housing agency. However, they still have to meet the requirements of their lease and pay ongoing rent.
New York City’s Human Resources Administration is offering rental arrears grants for households that have legal possession of their apartments, are not receiving unemployment benefits and have a combined household income below 80 percent AMI. The grant money pays the rent and utility arrears. The HRA website provides more information.

Authorities say 13-year-old armed with replica handgun fatally shot by police after chase in upstate New York
Police fatally shot a 13-year-old boy after a chase in upstate New York after the teen displayed what appeared to be a handgun, the Utica Police Department said in a statement. Police later said the teen was carrying a replica handgun.  Officers stopped two teenagers on Friday around 10 p.m. local time in Utica, a city of about 65,000 people in upstate New York located about an hour’s drive from Syracuse, police said. While the authorities were questioning the teens, one of them fled on foot, the statement said.  As he ran, police spotted what “appeared to be a handgun” pointed at the officers. One of the officers fired his gun and hit the teen, described as an Asian male. He was given immediate first aid by the police officers and was brought to Wynn Hospital, where he died from his wounds, Utica Police Chief Mark Williams said at a Saturday morning news conference.  Officers said they found a replica Glock handgun with a detachable magazine following the shooting.  “This replica handgun was ultimately found to be a pellet gun,” Williams said. Utica police later identified the deceased 13-year-old as Nyah Mway. The name of the officer who shot him has not been released. An interpreter was at the news conference to provide translation for the victim’s family and their community who were in attendance, so they could better understand the information provided.  The ethnicity of the victim’s family wasn’t identified, but Utica has resettled large numbers of refugees in recent years.  According to the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees, one of the largest numbers of Asian refugees Utica has resettled are from Burma, including from the Karen ethnic group as well as other groups. Other Asian refugees include Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodians along with Bosnians, Dominicans and more, the center said. Just over 19% of the once rapidly declining industrial city is now foreign-born, the center said.  “This tragedy reminds us of the tremendous challenges our community faces, particularly our partners in law enforcement, who tirelessly strive to ensure our streets remain safe,”  Utica City School District interim superintendent Dr. Kathleen Davis said in a statement Saturday. A social media video related to the incident has been circulating on the internet. Regarding the video, police said, “We are aware of a video of the incident circulating on social media platforms, which does not portray the incident in its entirety.” Police said they are conducting an investigation into the shooting, and will release items related to it over the next several days, including a critical incident brief and the full bodycam footage. The chief said during the news conference the police officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave. The snipers were John Allen Muhammad (age 41 at the time) and Lee Boyd Malvo (age 17 at the time), who traveled in a blue 1990 Chevrolet Caprice sedan. Their crime spree, which began in February 2002, included murders and robberies in several states, which resulted in seven deaths and seven injuries. In total, the snipers killed 17 people and wounded 10 others in a 10-month span.[2]In September 2003, Muhammad was sentenced to death, and in October, Malvo, a juvenile, was sentenced to six consecutive life sentences without parole. In November 2009, Muhammad was executed by lethal injection. In 2017, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit vacated Malvo's three life sentences without parole in Virginia on appeal, with re-sentencing ordered pursuant to the Supreme Court's ruling in the case of Miller v. Alabama, 567 U.S. 460, 132 S.Ct. 2455 (2012), which held that mandatory life sentences for juvenile criminals without possibility of parole violated the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The U.S. Supreme Court granted certiorari, with oral arguments held on October 16, 2019.[3] Should he be resentenced, Malvo's minimum prison sentence will be determined by a judge; the available maximum sentence would be life imprisonment. The ruling does not apply to the six life sentences Malvo received in Maryland.[4] On February 25, 2020, after the passage of a Virginia law allowing those who are serving life sentences for offenses committed before the age of 18 to seek release after serving 20 years,[5] the U.S. Supreme Court case was dismissed at the request of lawyers on both sides.[6]

The City Canvas- Urban Planning as a Creative Masterpiece
In the grand orchestra of human civilization, cities stand forth as the vibrant concertos that narrate tales of development, culture, and innovation. Urban planning, often side-lined to the corners of mere efficiency and functionality, is in truth an artful symphony that helps carve the identity and very soul of a cityscape. No city is just steel and concrete; it is a living canvas that is colored with the strokes of foresight, where practical infrastructure merges with the eloquence of design. As we turn a new chapter in our city's narrative, we welcome Kenneth Haskin, our new city manager. An experienced city administrator, Haskin brings a wealth of knowledge in economic development and senior-level management, a testament to his dedicated career in local municipalities. Born and raised in a small town near Jonesboro, Arkansas, Haskin's life has been painted with lessons of hard work from his family, an ethic that echoes in his approach towards urban planning. With a master’s degree in Public Administration from Webster University and a PhD from St. Mary’s Seminary & University in Baltimore, Maryland, Kenneth Haskin promises to compose a new era of development and progress for our city.
In the unfolding narrative of our city, we usher in a new era under the leadership of Kenneth Haskin. A seasoned city administrator, Haskin's extensive experience in economic development and senior-level management for local municipalities promises a fresh perspective and innovative approach to our city's progress. His upbringing in a small town near Jonesboro, Arkansas, instilled in him the value of hard work, a trait that resonates in his dedication and commitment to urban planning. Haskin's entrance heralds an anticipation of growth and prosperity, as we continue to shape our city's identity and future.
One of the primary challenges of urban planning is achieving a delicate balance between form and function. While functionality dictates the placement of roads, the allocation of resources, and the efficiency of systems, form breathes life into these structures. A well-designed city is more than a maze of efficient pathways; it is a visual narrative that influences the emotions and experiences of its inhabitants. Think of the iconic skyline of New York City, where the towering skyscrapers not only accommodate a bustling population but also symbolize the relentless pursuit of dreams.
Stepping into a new era, our city is ready to embark on a journey of transformation under the capable stewardship of our new city manager, Kenneth Haskin. With an impressive background in economic development and a track record of senior-level leadership in local municipalities, Haskin is equipped to bring fresh insights and dynamic solutions to our city's progress. Raised in a family that prioritized hard work and dedication, these values continue to resonate in his approach to urban planning. As we anticipate this new chapter of growth and prosperity, Haskin's leadership heralds an exciting future for our city.
In the realm of urban planning, sustainability has emerged as a guiding principle, transforming the city canvas into a palette of eco-conscious choices. Green spaces, renewable energy sources, and environmentally friendly infrastructure are no longer mere embellishments but integral components of the urban design. The city becomes a living, breathing entity that coexists harmoniously with the natural world, embodying a commitment to the well-being of both present and future generations.
As we navigate the urban landscape, public spaces stand out as the vibrant strokes that connect the diverse elements of a city. Parks, squares, and cultural hubs are not just voids between buildings; they are the open pages where the city's story unfolds. Urban planning, in this context, becomes the choreographer, orchestrating the dance of public life. Consider the grandeur of Parisian boulevards, where wide avenues and open squares invite citizens to engage in the timeless art of flânerie, strolling leisurely and immersing themselves in the city's pulsating rhythm.
As Cape Girardeau embarks on its new journey, we look forward to innovative transformations under the efficient leadership of our city manager, Kenneth Haskin. His vast experience in economic development and his record of senior-level leadership in local municipalities equips him to bring forward dynamic progress to our city. Grounded in the principles of hard work and dedication, values instilled in him from a young age, his unique perspective promises to chart a vibrant future for Cape Girardeau.
Art, in all its forms, has the power to provoke thought, elicit emotions, and challenge perspectives. Urban planning, as a creative endeavor, is no exception. The city canvas is a reflection of the values and priorities of a society, a mirror that prompts contemplation on our relationship with space and community. It challenges us to question not only the physical structures that surround us but also the intangible boundaries that define our interactions and connections.
In the pursuit of a city as a creative masterpiece, inclusivity becomes a crucial brushstroke. The city canvas is enriched when it embraces diversity, welcoming people of different backgrounds, abilities, and perspectives. Inclusive urban planning transcends the conventional boundaries, creating spaces that resonate with the myriad voices that make up the urban symphony. The High Line in New York City, transformed from an abandoned railway into a lush, elevated park, is a testament to the transformative power of inclusive design, inviting people from all walks of life to share a common space. Kenny Haskin City Manager
As we delve into the artistic dimensions of urban planning, it is essential to recognize the role of technology as both a medium and a muse. The integration of cutting-edge innovations, from smart infrastructure to augmented reality, amplifies the creative potential of city planning. The city canvas becomes an interactive masterpiece, inviting citizens to participate in shaping their urban environment. Virtual reality simulations enable us to walk through the streets of a city that exists only in the imagination, blurring the lines between the virtual and the tangible.
The city canvas is a testament to the dynamic interplay between pragmatism and creativity, functionality and form. Urban planning, far from being a mundane administrative task, emerges as a profound artistic expression that shapes the very essence of our communal existence. As we navigate the streets, squares, and parks of our cities, let us not merely see them as physical entities but as living artworks, woven with the threads of history, culture, and human ingenuity. The city canvas is an invitation to dream, to imagine, and to co-create the urban landscapes that define our past, present, and future.

(New York Jewish Week) — Even as it fights a gay pride club’s effort to gain official recognition on campus, Yeshiva University announced a new undergraduate club that it says will represent LGBTQ students “under traditional Orthodox auspices.”
The Modern Orthodox university announced Monday that the alternative club reflects input and perspectives from conversations among its rabbis, educators and current and past undergraduate LGBTQ students.
Named the Kol Yisroel Areivim Club, which refers to the Jewish principle that all Jews are responsible for one another, the club “was approved by the Administration, in partnership with lay leadership, and endorsed by senior Roshei Yeshiva,” including Rabbi Hershel Schachter, the Rosh Yeshiva, or chief rabbinical authority, of Yeshiva University.
The announcement is the latest attempt by the university to reconcile its stated commitment to ensuring “an inclusive campus for all students” and its religious opposition to homosexual behavior under its interpretation of Jewish law. Previously, the university had canceled all student clubs rather than accede to a court order demanding that it recognize the YU Pride Alliance, a support group for LGBTQ students that has been unofficially active on campus since 2009.
In a statement, the YU Pride Alliance called the new club “a desperate stunt by Yeshiva University to distract from the growing calls from its donors, alumni, faculty, policymakers, and the business community, who have stood alongside the YU Pride Alliance, as we continue to fight for our rights.”
“The YU sham is not a club as it was not formed by students, is not led by students, and does not have members; rather, it is a feeble attempt by YU to continue denying LGBTQ students equal treatment as full members of the YU student community,” its statement continued.
Rachael Fried, who has been supporting the YU Pride Alliance as executive director of the nonprofit Jewish Queer Youth, said that neither she nor any member of the YU Pride Alliance was consulted about the new club, nor had any knowledge of the new club before it was announced to the public on Monday afternoon.
“This process violates one of our core queer Jewish values of ‘nothing about us without us,’” Fried, a lesbian alum of Y.U.’s affiliated Stern College for Women, wrote in a statement to the New York Jewish Week. A decision “made without LGBTQ+ individuals and queer voices at the table is concerning and can even be harmful to the very people it aims to support,” she added.
Yeshiva University officials did not respond to requests for comment.
The university will also bolster its existing on-campus support services for LGBTQ students, according to the announcement, which include sensitivity training for faculty and staff, specialized consultations through the counseling center and strict anti-harassment, anti-bullying and anti-discrimination policies.
In the announcement, the university emphasizes that the club will support students within the framework of halacha, or Jewish law.
“Within this association students may gather, share their experiences, host events, and support one another while benefiting from the full resources of the Yeshiva community,” the statement said.
The university has not recognized the YU Pride Alliance up to this point, citing that it goes against the school’s “Torah values.” It is unclear from the announcement how the Kol Yisroel Arevim Club will differ.
In June, a New York State Supreme Court judge ruled that Y.U. must recognize the YU Pride Alliance, saying the school is defined as a secular institution in its charter and therefore subject to the New York City Human Rights Law.
Y.U. sought relief from that ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court, and when that motion was denied, temporarily suspended all student clubs through the Jewish holidays, which ended this year on Oct. 18. The administration has received criticism for its actions from faculty, alumni, students and donors, especially from its graduate programs, which include a law school, medical school and school of social work. Y.U. has indicated that it will continue to defend its position as the case proceeds in New York State courts.
A number of Modern Orthodox institutions have in recent years sought to be more welcoming to LGBTQ students, even though few Orthodox authorities have ruled that same-sex marriage or sexual relations can be countenanced under Jewish law. SAR Academy, a Modern Orthodox day school in the Bronx, is one of the only Modern Orthodox schools that sanctions an official Gay-Straight Alliance — a club formed last year with input from JQY.
An SAR administrator explained to the New York Jewish Week earlier this year that the school’s goal in approving the club was “balancing the heteronormative nature of our community with our belief that the Orthodox community must be a place for all Jews regardless of gender or sexual orientation.”

By • Olalekan Fagbade The World Can Ignore Nigeria at It's own 0eril- President Tinubu tells United Nations Secretary General at [UNGA!] President Bola Tinubu has said that ignoring Nigeria being Africa's biggest economic giant would be calamitous for the world. The president, who said this while speaking with the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, at his UN Headquarters Office in New York City on Wednesday, further decried the state of poverty in Africa, expressing his readiness to take the required decisions to address the situation in Nigeria. He said: “The poverty ravaging our continent and the question of security and counter-terrorism requires us to work in close and effective synergy. The world will ignore Nigeria at its own peril. If we engage in talkshops as real challenges wreak real havoc in real time, we will fail. The time to strike is now. The time to achieve real results is now. I fought for democracy. I was detained for democracy. I am now President and I am determined to prove that democracy can provide the development that our nation and our continent so urgently demands. “Trace those of us here to our foundations and you will find that we have ties and links with poverty. We must not be ashamed of that history, but poverty is unacceptable. I am one of the lucky survivors of gripping poverty. Nigeria is truly a giant. 240 million people and counting with a massive youth population. We are done saying too much. We seek much action. We have arisen out of poverty as individuals, but until our people have arisen out of that, we will not rest, even if it requires decisions at home that make me temporarily unpopular,” the president said. President Tinubu also said African nations would no longer accept a situation in which human rights advocacy was used by wealthy and powerful nations to stop developing economies from dealing decisively with malign actors who siphoned and smuggled out the continent’s vast mineral resources while smuggling in western-made weapons, which enriched the wealthiest economies in the world at the parasitic expense of African stability and wealth creation. “We are facing the great challenge of scavengers ravaging our lands and oppressing our people on illegal mines—taking our gold and mineral wealth back to developed economies by stealth and violence against Nigerians. Where one’s human right ends, the rights of another begin. Most especially for self-protection. If we fight, they say ‘human rights,’ but we will now be aggressive and we will question motives. We will stop what is happening in our land. We require your effective collaboration,” he stated. According to him, "The United Nations must transform from being one of the world’s foremost talkshops to discuss global issues into becoming the world’s foremost action coordination center." He said a situation in which 70% of the resources being devoted to the world’s poorest countries were being spent and sent back out on overheads and administrative costs would defeat the purpose and objectives of the organisation where help was needed most. In response, the UN Secretary-General emphasized that the UN system is in the process of real reform that will largely address some of the institutional frailties and lack of decision-making power for the developing world, on whose behalf more than 75% of UN resources are accrued. “We now recognize the need to reform the institution to represent the world as it is today. The questions of debt and SDRs. The fact that middle-income countries have only marginal access to concessional funding. In the SDGs Summit, we believe we have a growing political consensus and now, a declaration, in this regard. We are pursuing this with great determination,” the UN Secretary-General said. The UN Secretary-General further assured President Tinubu of the fullest support of the UN system for ECOWAS in light of the series of military coups which have occured in the West African sub-region in the past few months and years.
“Mr. President, we have high expectations for your presidency after the many bold steps you have taken. Nigeria is an indispensable voice in the sub-region. We will give you every support needed for your success to be achieved. Your success is Africa’s success and we wish you well,” the UN leader added. #TheWorldCanIgnoreNigeriaatItsownperil #TinubutellsUNSecretaryGeneral
