Hello! I had a question, are kimonos with rounded edges a thing? As seen with Nezuko's kimono from Demon Slayer. Tried looking into it but found nothing on the subject!
Hi! I have talked about Nezuko's outfit in a past note. The rounded hedge of her kimono is because the hem is tucked up in the back! It is a way of gaining freedom of movement when in kimono :)

So I have been wanting to make a Nezuko cosplay for a while, but I'm a bit confused about what she is wearing. I can't figure out if she is wearing a kimono or a Yukata. I was wondering if you could maybe answer that question.
Remember to drink water and have a nice day :)
My teapot has my daily watering covered thank you for the reminder ;)
As for your question, considering Demon slayer "historical" time, Nezuko would definitly wear a (lined) kimono as her daily clothes (I have covered the subject here).
Historically, 浴衣 yukata were linen then cotton bath-time clothing (that what the 浴 yu means). They were first worn in the bath (yukatabira 湯帷子), then as bathrobes when communal baths spread from 16th century and onward. They were mainly white with indigo dyed patterns (=shades of blue/green).
As daily wear kimono dwindled, yukata spread as informal summer clothing, especially for matsuri events. This informal wear might be linked to the popularity of onsen vacations, as it was common for ryokan (traditional inns) to proved to their guests a nemaki 寝巻き (kind of informal sleepclothes also worn to stroll around onsen towns, suuuper close to yukata in both material/use/shape).
As to your Nezuko cosplay, tbh if it's easier for you to find/make a yukata, go for it! Nowaday, it's not unusual for people to wear their nice yukata dress-up as a kimono (=over a juban) :)
Construction is similar between kimono and yukata anyway. Yukata are simply made from cotton and unlined, so it will be much easier to dress and more confortable to wear - especially in conv heat!
Hope it helps!

Romics October 2022
Prequel always transforms my pictures in a lovely way! I have dressed as Nezuko Kamado also for this Romics edition, and it was really funny 💫✌🏻

Got a Nezuko costume for trick or treating with my daughter. I love the character and the look, and I love kimonos and lots of other Japanese stuff. The costume is... it is a costume. It is meant to look like a kimono. It's not meant to be a kimono. I wish I could get the costume as a real kimono, but this is the cheap and easy-to-mass-produce alternative. I get that. It doesn't stop me from wanting to rant about all the ways it would be different if it were a proper kimono. I accept these limitations. I do.
That being said...
I might have to make my own damn kimono version. The outfit should have a white juban layer, then the iconic pink with the asanoha patterning (I found a place to buy the fabric, yay), plus the obi, and then the maroon haori coat.
Having the right layers would make the ensemble more comfortable, warmer, and easier to fit right (which plays into comfortable). The costume is made to look like it has layers, but it's just one layer that has to be secured in the back (because you at least have to overlap the sides in the front), but because the haori isn't a seperate piece you have to do this inside the outfit. The obi has velcro but you have to put it on blindly by reaching inside the outfit to overlap the sides and line the velcro strips up. That was annoying.
The curved seam on the front panels bugs me, too. Yeah, I get that's the easiest way to get the visual of how they fold up a bit when she wears it, but that isn't how kimonos are cut. It's all rectangles, and you can adjust the drape as needed when you put it on. Yes, I know most people who just like the anime aren't going to know or want to bother with this. It's a personal gripe, and I will deal with it by making my own version.
And the sleeves! Nezuko is a girl, and her sleeves should drape down anywhere from her waist to past her hips with the side nearest the body largely open. They should not be fully sealed to the body. Rather, they should not be short enough to be fully sealed to the body. Yes, yes, less fabric saves on cost when mass producing and all that. Personal gripe. I know.
On the plus side, the leg warmers/ leg wrap things? Super cozy and comfortable, which was extra nice since today was a good bit colder and more windy than yesterday.
Okay, rant over.
