[Review] Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2: Grand Prix & 3: Slime Speedway (PC)
Tumblr media
Competent cartoon karting!
On my continuing quest to play Avatar-related games, I revisited these kart racers that I got in a bundle last year. My brother and I played them a bit and acknowledged that they played quite well but they didn’t keep us hooked. Now after a few solo sessions I appreciate how much they offer for a single player.
They’re both made by Bamtang, following up on the first instalment which was console-exclusive and which I know nothing about. They’ve made another kart racer for Dreamworks since then, so it seems like a niche they’re suited to, more so than their clumsy attempt at an Avatar action-adventure. I certainly enjoyed these more than Quest for Balance.
Tumblr media
The two are so similar that it made sense to cover them together. Many kart racing features you’d expect are present and correct: item boxes, boost panels, jump stunts, shortcuts, Diddy Kong Racing’s bananas coins. The key innovation is the assistance mechanic, where you get passive and active bonuses from support characters you’ve unlocked. This lets you tailor your playstyle and makes races more interactive as you gather slime to activate your main support ability.
The default set gives you some variety but you can unlock more (as well as more drivers and scads of vehicle parts) by doing Grand Prixs and in the Challenge mode. The Challenges are a great feature for expanding the experience beyond just doing races; I honestly don’t know why all kart racers don’t have stuff like this. Having said that a lot of them do end up being “win a race plus X condition” but having a set loadout forces you to try out different things, and then they give you something for completing it which is just good brain chemistry.
The Grand Prix mode also has bonus objectives, at least in 3. Every race has particular goals that everyone competes for, although I couldn’t tell if there was any benefit to achieving them. This instalment also adds a kind of super items that put objects all over the course, turning a race into a minigame of sorts to either avoid or collect them. These interrupt the normal gameplay loop a bit much but I like that they tried something.
Tumblr media
They might just be throwing too many things in though. Along with a new lighting engine, 3 adds gameplay features like transforming boat sections (a la Sonic & All-Stars Transformed) and autoscroller slide shortcuts and it can feel like a bit too much at times on top of all the usual kart racer mechanics and the supports. In this way 2 strikes a better balance of fundamentals and extra features.
I also prefer the way 2 handles unlocks, which are granted just for completing modes and such. 3 adds in an out-of-race currency for buying new parts, drivers, and supports, but it trickles them out to you too slowly so it takes ages just to afford a few new playable characters. 3 does have a larger, more varied roster (although it reverts the Ninja Turtles to their classic designs rather than the more distinctive ones that 2 used, but what do I care) and track selection, as you would want from a sequel. The coverage is quite similar to All-Star Brawl 1 actually, with a decent range of classic Nicktoons.
Tumblr media
In both games the characters are mostly done justice by their 3D models, with the notable exception of Zim who looks atrocious. However, a big difference between them is the voice acting: 2 has none at all, which hurts the characterisation. It just feels wrong for all these larger-than life cartoon characters to be completely silent throughout! The cast in 3 is mostly similar to All-Star Brawl's mix of returning champions and spot-on recasts, and the game feels much better for it.
As far as Avatar coverage goes, NKR2 has Aang and Korra (the bare minimum) and tracks based on Ba Sing Se, Agna Qel'a (but they don't call it that), an Air Temple, and Korra's version of the spirit world, plus a bunch of support characters (the new 2D artwork for these looks quite nice by the way). The tracks look great, and I especially liked the spirits bustling around the sidelines in that track; I wish the others were as populated with background activity. NKR3 adds Toph to the racer list (great choice) as well as Zuko in an overpriced DLC pack. It removes the Air Temple track and replaces it with a (perhaps inferior) Fire Nation track, while adding new water sections to the others. Overall it's a decent showing for a crossover, showcasing some of the distinctiveness of the series, but not quite as satisfying as the All-Star Brawl games in that way.
Tumblr media
Bamtang's kart racers, at least these two, get a lot right for the genre with some fun ideas and decent single-player offerings added in for good measure. I feel like 3 throws too many ingredients in the pot and is a bit messier for it, but it's undeniable how much voice acting adds to a big cartoon crossover. Playing these also reinforced my disappointment at Quest for Balance; Bamtang did a much better job with these games and it's unfortunate that they turned out to be the wrong people for QfB. Maybe they can do an all-Avatar kart racer next...! With an adventure mode...!?

Oh wow Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3 ? !
Doesn’t look like there are any more Hey Arnold !  guys...but, there’s voice-acting now !
There are some new characters here, though
I thought Aang needed a friend last time, but....Toph ?!  I’m not sure if she would be entirely comfortable driving a vehicle....
