Un jour...une histoire 📚

Coup de coeur cette semaine pour « Grand seigneur » de Nina Bouraoui, un roman bouleversant dans lequel l'auteure rend un magnifique hommage à son père.

L'écriture peut-elle être un exutoire face à la douleur de la perte d'un proche ? Pour l'écrivaine, ce fut certainement une nécessité et une réparation. Dans son nouveau roman, elle fait vibrer comme jamais la corde de l'intime en évoquant la fin de vie de son père entré dans la maison médicale Jeanne-Garnier, à Paris, en mai 2022. Avec sa mère, sa sœur et ses neveux, ils se relaient au chevet de cet ancien haut fonctionnaire algérien, qui voyageait dans le monde entier. Elle raconte la mort qu'elle sent dans les couloirs de cette unité de soins palliatifs, avec aussi ce qu'elle implique, notamment l'adieu à sa jeunesse insouciante. Elle se remémore ses années de petite fille à Alger, ses promenades main dans la main dans le quartier d'Hydra avec ce grand homme qu'elle admire tant, et le remercie pour ce qu'il lui a donné. Il se battit pour épouser une jeune Bretonne, blonde aux yeux bleus, et, plus tard, accepta l'homosexualité de sa fille. Il était fier qu'elle se lance dans l'écriture et publie des livres. Avec tendresse, pudeur et sensibilité, Nina Bouraoui rend un magnifique hommage à son Grand Seigneur, son héros au sourire si doux. Lumineux et bouleversant.

Thinking about the time in university when I had to choose a French memoir to write an essay on and so I chose Garçon manqué by Nina Bouraoui because it was short. And I didnt really feel like I understood anything but I had an Essay To Write, Goddammit, and Nina Boraoui must be some kind of God-tier writer because I had never heard of nonbinary people but I sure did end up reinventing nonbinarism from first principles by brute force essay-ing her book.

i've been thinking about this all day to try to give a good answer but i sort of realized my inspiration could probably be best described by 2019 tendercore era tumblr lol. if u were not there for that truly magical experience of posting, it was a lot of crush by richard siken and various mary oliver poems and such classics as the goldfinch by donna tartt and movies like portrait of a lady on fire dir celine sciamma and my own private idaho dir gus van sant. and a lot of it has become very tumblr cliche by now, but they are very formative to me and are still some of my favorites and they r just good they hold up i think. also -- just remembered he was in this group -- but ocean vuong's first poetry collection was one of the first i read and it was just like. so amazing. i also really liked his novel on earth we're briefly gorgeous.

i think a lot about james baldwin and frank o'hara in terms of bringing the poetic to the everyday (giovanni's room is one of my favorites and "for grace after a party" is one of thee poems of all time for me. and "mayakovsky" and "on rachmaninoff's birthday" he has so many hits). recently i've been trying to get a little bit more experimental ish. i recently read and really liked garçon manqué by nina bouraoui (which wikipedia tells me is translated as tomboy).

all time favorite writer is federico garcía lorca. i don't really think i've got much of him in my writing but i'll always namedrop him. hes my weird dead gay historical figure friend forever and ever <3
