One Room Angel slowly swept into my life and took me by surprise with such an interesting premise and great characters. So, even though it was from Japan, and I know how Japanese shows might end up, I chose to stay and find out what happened to the angel and how Kouki would change.
Did I expect the angel to disappear at some point? Yes.
Did I want the angel to disappear? No.
Did it make sense that the angel had to leave? Yes.
Did I end up smiling halfway through episode 6 only to realise this is the last episode and this is the time the angel would disappear? Yes...
What a beautiful and evocative show that touched upon the themes of communication, misunderstanding, death, loneliness and identity. Here I was expecting a cute little show with an amnesiac angel but I was given social commentary and responsibility packed into a short but effective narrative. It's not a show I would watch when I'm bored because it has the tendency to hit you with dark humour when you least expect it. But it's a show I'd recommend to anyone interested in delving deeper into Japanese filmmaking and narrative style.
I'm truly thankful and happy that I had the opportunity over the last 6 weeks to enjoy this show even though it constantly ripped my heart out. Hats off to these great actors and everyone who worked on this show.

One Room Angel (2023) ep 3-6

Pairing: [unresolved in cannon; so maybe]
joousama uke X hetare seme
or
joousama X tsukushi riba
or
chibi seme X otokomae uke
Almost pairing: kichiku seme X heibon uke

What I liked:
Budget management
Setting the whole story in a single season – summer

Sparse crowd and settings – even though this were at the cost of setting-related scenes in the manga that I liked. For example, I liked the visit to the host club in the manga but I really enjoyed the bit in live-action just as well.
What I didn’t like:
#1 Nuance sacrificed at the altar of synthetic sweeteners [high school, fireworks and picnic by the beach].
Main casualties:
Angel’s female classmate - an interesting character in the manga. A very made-by-Harada character.
Kouki’s brother - rice and the healing.
Kouki’s mother – her occupation and personality.
Did they have to go there? Really?
#2 Ending/post-credit scene.
Here’s the thing with manga extras – there can be varying takes on if or not it can be considered cannon. In case of One Room Angel, I took the extra to be part of the cannon.
Waiting for beloved in the after-life is one of my favorite tropes. I absolutely enjoyed the angel’s reactions in the manga extra. I was looking forward to it in the live-action too, only to be disappointed.
#3 Kouki’s tears
The actor who played Kouki did a very good job. But I am still irked by the ikemen casting for a gachimuchi character. I wanted to see more sadness and misery in Kouki. It seemed too much to ask an ikemen to evoke angst in that manner.
That back hug scene on the road and the child pointing out Kouki – why did the director forgo tears there?
#4 Shonen-ai over-saturation
I am craving for more variety in BL live-action adaptations. I want more yaoi adaptations after this year's deluge of live-action shonen-ai. I want a pinku eiga based on BL manga. I want another Sei no Gekiyaku (2020) level ero-manga adaptation.
I want some gei-comi (bara) adaptation. Someone, please make the live-action adaptations of Gengoroh Tagame’s Fisherman’s Lodge and Ichikawa Kazuhide’s Fire Code. Some fire and ice, please.

One Room Angel Review - Tragicomic tale of human bonds
A convenience store worker wakes up from a near-death experience to find an angel living in his room. Is it real or just imaginary? Read our review of "One Room Angel" starring Uesugi Shuhei & Nishimura Takuya.

When it comes to white-winged angels, there’s a certain virtuous image imprinted in our heads, so we expect them to be beautiful, kind, and helpful, if nothing else. And while the angel in 2023 Japanese series “One Room Angel” is beautiful, with lovely white wings, he is also surprisingly self-centered and would rather click selfies than help…

One Room Angel - Live Action
This time is Harada's turn! The next tunku shower live action is One Room Angel. The strange and gentle cohabitation of Kouki, a man who's throwing his life away, and a cocky angel with no memories who can't fly.
I am really curious about how this is gonna go. Count me in!
Coming October 19th

ONE ROOM ANGEL (2023, JAPAN)
Episode 2
What is happening? Why is this little show got me in a chokehold.
A down on his luck depressed loner Koki (the amazing UESUGI SHUHEI) and a cutesy boy angel simply known as Angel (the equally amazing NISHIMURA TAKUYA)
Is Angel boy gay? Is our handsome (he thinks he's not) loner gay or perhaps bi?
Where is this going? I'm intrigued. Very intrigued. And the wing thing. Koki got lost in the wings and somehow it was dare I say..adorable. I'm at a lost but I want to see where this 6 episode Japanese BL is headed. Hmmmm? 🤨🤔
@pose4photoml @lutawolf @kingofthereblog-boysloveed are you guys watching this one?

Uesugi Shuhei and Nishimura Takuya are reportedly to star in MBS’ Tunku Drama ‘#OneRoomAngel #ワンルームエンジェル’, premiering on October 19th.
There are a lot of things that Kouki doesn’t have – no hobbies, no friends, no lover, no stable job, and no will to live. So when a random tussle with some kids gets him stabbed, he thinks maybe this is finally his ticket out of this crappy life. But just as he’s about to pass out he sees a beautiful “angel”… How is Kouki supposed to cope when less than a month later, he’s mysteriously healed, has astronomical bills to pay, and suddenly has the same beautiful angel as his amnesiac roommate?
The drama is an adaptation based on Harada’s manga of the same name and taking over ‘My Personal Weatherman.
