The other day I saw a not-transfem butch talking about how they feel good when they're out and about because they feel like they are showing young girls that they have the option of being butch, and it got me thinking. I don't really feel like I do that all the time because I'm not sure I pass often enough? But what I do feel often is that I'm showing earlier in transition trans women that being butch is an option. Do you/have you ever felt the same way? Do you have any thoughts?

I think its important for binary trans women to know that they're allowed to reclaim their masculinity on their own terms.

A lot of early transition trans women find the butch label and hold onto it because it eases their dysphoria as they transition to being more feminine. Some trans women claim the butch label briefly in order to explore and understand their own relationship to masculinity.

Actual Butches are a perishingly rare breed among girls like us, but I find that our visibility provides an anchor for other girls who want to grow more fully into themselves.

As for passing, yeah. Most trans people I meet assume I'm a trans man if they assume I'm trans at all. I'm thinking about adding dangly earrings and eye shadow to my repertoire in order to flag femininity just a bit more.

I do feel like a bit of a beacon. A lot of people have told me that I was the catalyst for a major round of gender introspection. I like being that for people.

Ultimately, I'm just living my life in the way that is most comfortable and pleasing for me. it just so happens that I'm comfortable being a beacon.

I think one of the kindest things you can do for people with various mental health struggles is just... let people back into your life after they've been absent for a while.

Making friends as an adult is so fucking hard already and isolating yourself from other people is a very common symptom of depression, anxiety, burnout, ocd, trauma, grief, etc. Which means that someone will do the hard work of recovery/healing and resurface back into a world where their previous friends have written them off because they stopped showing up.

So if you know someone where you're like "yeah we could have been better friends but they fell off the map a bit" and that person suddenly reaches out, or starts showing up to events even though you kind of forgot they were still in the group chat... well they may have been Going Through It and you don't actually have to punish them for their absence you can just be glad that they're back.
