Signal Island, Nouméa, New Caledonia: The islet of Signal is one of the islets of New Caledonia administratively belonging to Nouméa, and which is managed by the South Province. Being located about 15 km west of Noumea, it is possible to get there by boat or by taxi-boat. Signal Islet is a nature reserve that protects the coral reefs, marine fauna, flora, as well as the seabirds that nest on its land. Le 12 mars 1942, les troupes américaines débarquent en Nouvelle-Calédonie, territoire de la France libre suite à l'appel du 18 juin du Général de Gaulle. La Nouvelle-Calédonie devient alors une importante base aérienne lors de la bataille de la mer de Corail et la base de lancement du Corps expéditionnaire américain pour la bataille de Guadalcanal. Nouméa devient le Quartier-Général du Pacifique.

Macron calls for “pacification” in New Caledonia

Emmanuel Macron called on Thursday for “constructive pacification” and the search for a political “solution”, but did not budge on the results of three referendums that voted in favour of keeping the overseas territory within the French Republic, France 24 reports.

Arriving in Nouméa, New Caledonia’s capital, on a visit after a week of unrest, the head of state opened his first meeting with local elected officials and economic representatives with a minute’s silence in memory of the six people killed in recent days.

He announced that some 3,000 members of the security forces flew to New Caledonia for riot control would remain there “as long as necessary, even during the Olympic and Paralympic Games” in Paris, which will finish in early September.

Although the government has declared a state of emergency in the territory, the president said he was not in favour of extending it beyond Monday’s deadline, which would require legislation. He said in the presence of elected representatives of both pro-independence and non-independence supporters:

I personally believe that this state of emergency should not be extended, because I am deeply convinced that dialogue is necessary. But it will only be lifted if everyone, acting responsibly, calls for the removal of the roadblocks, which I say is still not happening with such clarity.

1970s. Inactive since 2019. 26 m (85 ft) gray stone tower, the south tower of the Cathédrale de St.-Joseph. Lightphotos.net has Jan de Jonge's photo; in this photo the front light peeks over the top of the right tower and the rear light, on a tall white mast, is seen just to the left of the left tower. A good photo of the facade of the church is available, Helen Farley has a street-level photo of the south tower, Huelse has a historic postcard view, and Google has a satellite view. This range was discontinued in 2019. Located on a hillside overlooking downtown Nouméa. Site open, tower closed. ex-Admiralty K4816; NGA 3676.

Keep the people of New Caledonia in your thoughts, especially the indigenous Kanak.

A state of emergency has been declared by France, who has deployed troops to the ports and airports, and there has been multiple nights of clashes with at least 4 confirmed fatalities and hundreds injured. They’ve also banned TikTok in the country. The international airport and schools are closed, and a curfew has been set in the capital of Nouméa.

Violence has erupted after lawmakers in France approved a constitutional amendment to allow recent arrivals into New Caledonia to vote in provincial elections. Prior, voting in provincial elections was restricted to people who had resided in the country before 1998 and their children, and this was done in order to give greater representation to the Kanaks who had become a minority population; the changes may realistically dilute indigenous voting power.
