Slick Rick is still The Ruler. 

The rapper once known as "MC Ricky D" has built a legacy on 35 years of lyricism, style and artistry. Yes, he's arguably rap's greatest storyteller; a style icon and dropped one of the greatest debut albums in the history of debut albums. But when one considers how much of his career was put on hold, when one considers just how immaculate his flow remained even as his style evolved and times changed; Rick's run is truly remarkable. 

He burst out the gate with the uber-classic Great Adventures Of Slick Rick, an album that boasted at least four bonafide all-time great songs, and a platinum-seller that cemented him as a star on Def Jam. His life would take a dramatic turn soon afterwards, and Rick found himself headed to prison in 1991, the same year he dropped The Ruler's Back. That album was followed by 1994s Behind Bars, completed on work furlough. Rick would see release in late 1996, and he dropped his fourth album, The Art Of Storytelling in early 1999. It was Rick's first album since his debut not recorded under duress, and critics hailed it as his creative and commercial comeback. 

So that's the short version of Slick Rick's story. We decided to rank our favorite 25 cuts from the legendary MC Ricky D.

31. Which soundtracks do you think are objectively the best (or what are some that you think deserve appreciation)? THE QUEEN OF THE DAMNED SOUNDTRACK! Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, and Silent Hill 4 soundtracks, The Craft soundtrack, the Okami soundtrack is nice too, Romeo Must Die soundtrack, Cowboy Bebop soundtrack, Twilight soundtrack, and The Nutty Professor soundtrack.

32. How do you feel about musicals? Um... Honestly I’m not big on musicals. I’m meh about them.

33. Do you have any favorite composers, including classical ones? I like Akira Yamaoka, Yoko Kanno, and Yoko Shimomura’s work. I don’t really have a favorite classical composer.

SONNY TURNER (1938-Died January 13th 2022,at 83.Throat cancer). American singer. Turner was best known for replacing Tony Williams as lead singer of The Platters,in 1959. Turner, whose friend and mentor was Jackie Wilson, breathed new life into The Platters with three hit singles; "I Love You 1000 Times" in 1966, "With This Ring" in 1967 and "Washed Ashore" in 1968. 10 Times Mediocre Movies Spawned Really Good Music Videos

Before both businesses went in different directions post-file sharing, mainstream films and music hit on a synergistic peak in the ’90s since the movie soundtrack turned into a dominant pop culture type. Nowadays, soundtracks are largely irrelevant and unnecessary, as flowing playlists have displaced the industrial compilation.

The ’90s in particular were characterized by great films with wonderful soundtracks (Boogie Nights, Pulp Fiction, Clueless, etc). However, what I wished to do here was list a number of the films where sometimes music videos were much better than the source movies. There were not any shortage of them in the late 20th century. ” They would only use footage but, in some cases, they’d have some bit is performed by the actors .

10. Aaliyah, “Are You That Somebody” By Dr. Dolittle Dr. Dolittle came out a year following The Nutty Professor, aka was the beginning of the end of Eddie Murphy. But this Timbaland and Aaliyah collaboration is one of a generation’s most pairings. I think yet and artists and music writers would concur Aaliyah is unimpeachable, typically considered as a member of a production gift is somehow underrated. 7. Will Smith, “Wild Wild West” By Wild Wild West It appears as though the complete version of the was scrubbed off streaming websites (probably for the top). What would you see the movie or do: listen to the song? I think that’s all that needs to be said. Don’t actually watch this if you have some opinions about Will Smith which you would love to hang onto.

6. Puff Daddy feat. Jimmy Page, “Come with Me” By Godzilla No one recalls what happened in this turgid stinker of a Godzilla reboot, including the folks who left it. It is the equivalent of Surge soda. But something about getting Jimmy Page — famously only a terrible man — and pre-Diddy Puff Daddy together for this terrible Boyification of Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” is still preferable to seeing the pricey turd of a blockbuster that the film was, despite Godzilla’s lovers’ comparatively higher tolerance for bullshit.

5. The Cardigans, “Lovefool” By Romeo + Juliet Here is most likely the latest take on this list: Baz Lurhmann couldn’t direct his way out of a wet bag full of small underwater Leos. The Cardigans are great. I think we can all basically agree with that. But we have to be fair: Romeo + Juliet, over the remainder, is worthless without its own music. And this is the song from the soundtrack of the film. The Cardigans, since it happens, have dated nicely.

4. Coolio feat. LV, “Gangsta’s Paradise” By Dangerous Minds It cannot be overstated how huge this record and music video were in the time (such as the next one with this list as well). “Gangsta’s Paradise” featured bozo rapper Coolio doing a stunning turn to coincide with the edgy topics of the film, which is basically a mildly entertaining rehash of this Stand and Deliver template.   The video and song also got the Weird Al treatment. Although Coolio’s career has taken a weird twist — for instance, he has starred in a culinary net series named Cookin’ With Coolio— he was when the king of the mainstream world, and this video was that moment.

3. Whitney Houston, “I’ll Always Love You” By The Bodyguard Attempt naming a single scene in The Bodyguard. This absolute monster of a single dominated the charts for what felt like years in the time. It was inevitable. The Kevin Costner/Whitney Houston movie it was encouraging ended up riding the soundtrack’s success, led by this cover of the Dolly Parton classic, “I Will Always Love You.” The film ended up grossing near a half billion dollars in box office revenue in the early ’90s. But the film itself was essentially scrubbed in the cultural memory from the close of the decade (at least till it was revived as a musical in 2012). Also there’s a fairly intriguing documentary on Houston which was recently published.

2. Warren G ft. Nate Dogg, “Regulate” By Above the Rim “Regulate” was the perfect car for both Nate and Warren to showcase their abilities and, consequently, break out of the shadows of the predecessors. Among these samples is out of Michael McDonald’s “I Keep Forgettin'” — and which is not going to be the last time you visit Mr. McDonald with this list.

1. Michael McDonald, “Sweet Freedom” By Running Scared Oh here he is again. Look, I’ve nothing against Gregory Hines and Running Scared is not even which awful; it’s only totally forgettable. This video, despite the addition of Billy “Blackface” Crystal, is still a treat and undoubtedly the best part about the disposable dollar-bin leftover.

Το άλμπουμ έχει πουλήσει 12 εκατομμύρια αντίτυπα στην Αμερική, 26 εκατομμύρια αντίτυπα παγκοσμίως και έγινε το πιο επιτυχημένο άλμπουμ του 1989 και του 1990. Έχει μείνει γνωστό ως το μοναδικό άλμπουμ της Τζάνετ, το οποίο να έχει κοινωνικά μηνύματα (σε τραγούδια όπως τα Black Cat και το Rhythm Nation)

Καλλιτεχνικές Περιηγήσεις 1993-2003

Μετά την τεράστια επιτυχία των Control και Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814, η Τζάνετ κυκλοφόρησε το πέμπτο της άλμπουμ, “Janet.” (1993), το οποίο έγινε και το πιο επιτυχημένο της μέχρι σήμερα. Είχε ως θέμα τη σεξουαλική απελευθέρωση της γυναίκας. Με την υποστήριξη πολυ-πλατινένιων σινγκλ, όπως το “Thats The Way Love Goes”, το οποίο χτύπησε την κορυφή των τσαρτς στην Αμερική (για 10 εβδομάδες), στην Αγγλία, αλλά και σε σχεδόν όλες τις χώρες του κόσμου, πουλώντας 8 εκατομμύρια, όντας ένα από τα εμπορικότερα σινγκλ όλων των εποχών. Το σινγκλ Again έφτασε επίσης την κορυφή στην Αμερική και σε άλλες χώρες, βοηθώντας το άλμπουμ να ξεπεράσει την επιτυχία του προηγούμενου άλμπουμ της Τζάνετ “Rhythm Nation 1814”, αφού πέτυχε πωλήσεις ανώτερες των 30 εκατομμυρίων παγκοσμίως. Το άλμπουμ παρήγαγε 6 τοπ, 10 σινγκλς και έγινε το 2ο πιο επιτυχημένο άλμπουμ του 1993, πίσω από το Bodyguard της Whitney Houston, το οποίο είχε τεράστιες πωλήσεις (43 εκατομμύρια).

Το 1995 κυκλοφόρησε έναν δίσκο, ο οποίος περιλάμβανε τις μεγαλύτερες επιτυχίες της. Ο δίσκος, με την υποστήριξη του πολύ επιτυχημένου Runaway πούλησε περίπου 16 εκατομμύρια παγκοσμίως. Το 1997 κυκλοφόρησε το άλμπουμ The Velvet Rope, το οποίο σύμφωνα με διάφορα από τα μεγαλύτερα μουσικά περιοδικά όπως το Rolling Stone, είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα όλων των εποχών. Το σινγκλ Together Again κατέκτησε την κορυφή σε σχεδόν όλες τις χώρες του κόσμου (Αμερική, Αγγλία, Καναδά, Ιαπωνία κ.α.), πούλησε πάνω από 10 εκατομμύρια και είναι το πιο επιτυχημένο της σινγκλ μέχρι σήμερα. Το σινγκλ I Get Lonely έφτασε το #3 στην Αμερική και στην Αγγλία και έγινε μεγάλη επιτυχία παγκοσμίως. Το άλμπουμ, το οποίο είχε ως θέμα την σεξουαλική απελευθέρωση και τα σεξουαλικά ταμπού, πούλησε περίπου 16 εκατομμύρια. Αν και δεν κατάφερε να επαναλάβει την τεράστια επιτυχία των τριών προηγούμενων άλμπουμ της, έγινε η μεγαλύτερη επιτυχία της χρονιάς και ακόμη θεωρείται το καλύτερο άλμπουμ της.

Το 2000 κέρδισε υποψηφιότητα για Όσκαρ, ενώ χτύπησε την κορυφή των Αμερικάνικων, των Αγγλικών αλλά και διάφορων άλλων chart με το σινγκλ Doesn’t really Matter, που περιέχεται στο soundtrack της ταινίας ‘The Nutty Professor II’ με πρωταγωνίστρια την ίδια και το διάσημο κωμικό Eddie Murphy. Το 2001 μετά από ένα μουσικό διάλειμμα που διήρκεσε δύο χρόνια κυκλοφόρησε το All For You που είχε και πάλι ως θέμα την σεξουαλικότητα, αλλά σε πιο χορευτικούς ρυθμούς, συγκριτικά με αυτούς των δύο προηγούμενων άλμπουμ της, τα οποία είχαν έναν πιο σκοτεινό και φιλοσοφημένο χαρακτήρα. Την πρώτη του εβδομάδα κυκλοφορίας πούλησε 660.000 αντίτυπα στην Αμερική και πάνω από ενάμιση εκατομμύρια σε όλων τον κόσμο. Μέχρι σήμερα έχει πουλήσει σχεδόν 16 εκατομμύρια. Το σίνγκλ All For You έγινε #1 στην Αμερική για 10 εβδομάδες και σε σχεδόν όλων τον κόσμο επίσης (Αγγλία, Ιαπωνία κ.α.). Το επόμενο σινγκλ Someone To Call My Lover έγινε επίσης τεράστια επιτυχία (#2 στην Αμερική και #3 στην Αγγλία).

Εκκεντρικότητες και Παρακμή

Το 2003, στο Super Bowl, σε μία εμφάνιση με τον τραγουδιστή Justin Timberlake, μετά από μία άτυχη στιγμή(;) στο χορευτικό, το στήθος της Τζάνετ βρέθηκε εκτεθειμένο σε πάνω από 100 εκατομμύρια τηλεθεατές. Το γεγονός αυτό προκάλεσε τεράστια αίσθηση παγκοσμίως. Κυρίως στην Αμερική, μετά από το ατυχές συμβάν η Τζάνετ έγινε αντικείμενο χλευασμού σε αμέτρητες εκπομπές. Το 2004, η εικόνα της Τζάνετ με το στήθος ακάλυπτο έγινε η πιο πολυσυζητημένη της χρονιάς. Το Record Guiness, την ανακήρυξε ως το πιο πολυσυζητημένο άτομο της χρονιάς αλλά και το πιο αναζητήσιμο άτομο στο internet για το 2004. Γενικώς, το γεγονός αυτό έβλαψε την δημόσια εικόνα της Τζάνετ ανεπανόρθωτα.

Την ίδια χρονιά κυκλοφόρησε το άλμπουμ “Damita Jo”, το οποίο είχε έντονο το σεξουαλικό στοιχείο. Αν και τα πρώτα τρία σινγκλ του άλμπουμ πέτυχαν σημαντική επιτυχία, το άλμπουμ δεν κατάφερε να επαναλάβει την επιτυχία των προηγούμενων της άλμπουμ, πουλώντας λιγότερα από 5 εκατομμύρια αντίτυπα παγκοσμίως. Το πρώτο σινγκλ από το άλμπουμ εξέπληξε τους παραγωγούς αφού δεν κατάφερε να μπει στο τοπ 10 της Αμερικής, φτάνοντας μόνο στο τοπ 14, γεγονός που το κάνει το πρώτο σινγκλ της Τζάνετ, που να αποτύχει να μπει στο τοπ 10, από το “Two to the Power of Love” το 1984.

Παρ´ όλα αυτά, έξω από την Αμερική, το σινγκλ πέτυχε μεγαλύτερη επιτυχία (τοπ 6 στην Αγγλία, τοπ 1 στην Ιαπωνία, τοπ 8 στην Γερμανία), αν και αρκετά μικρότερη από αυτήν των προγενέστερων σινγκλ της. Επόμενα σινγκλ όπως τα “All Nite (Don’t Stop)”, “Ι Want You” έφτασαν όλα μέσα στο το τοπ 10 των Ευρωπαϊκών χωρών αλλά και της Ιαπωνίας, αλλά απέτυχαν να εισχωρήσουν στο τοπ 20 της Αμερικής. Η σχετική αποτυχία του άλμπουμ (συγκριτικά με τα προηγούμενά της) οφείλετε στην ατυχία του Super Bowl, ή οποία ευθύνεται και για την αποτυχία και των επόμενων άλμπουμ της. Το 2005 κυκλοφόρησε το άλμπουμ “20 Y.O.”, το οποίο επίσης απέτυχε να επαναφέρει την επιτυχία της σε υψηλό επίπεδο. Το πρώτο σίνγκλ, “Call On Me”, έφτασε #1 στα r’n’b charts της Αμερικής, οπού παρέμεινε για 7 μη-διαδοχικές εβδομάδες. Στο εξωτερικό το σινγκλ αυτό επίσης κατάφερε να πραγματοποιήσει επιτυχία. (#2 στην Αγγλία, #1 στην Ιαπωνία, #3 στην Γερμανία και στην Γαλλία και #1 παγκοσμίως).

Παρ´ όλη την τεράστια επιτυχία του πρώτου σινγκλ, το δεύτερο σινγκλ “So Excited” έφτασε μόνο #26 στην Αμερική και #14 στην Αγγλία. Στην Ιαπωνία όμως έφτασε το #1. Τα επόμενα σινγκλ αν και απέτυχαν να γίνουν επιτυχία στην Αμερική (#35 και #46), έγιναν τεράστια επιτυχία στην Ιαπωνία, οπού και τα δύο έφτασαν την #1 θέση στα charts. To album πούλησε σχεδόν 6 εκατομμύρια αντίτυπα παγκοσμίως και θεωρήθηκε αποτυχία από τους κριτικούς (συγκριτικά με τα προηγούμενα άλμπουμ της).

Το 2008 κυκλοφόρησε το “Discipline” που έφτασε το #1 στην Αμερική, στην Ιαπωνία, στην Αγγλία και σε άλλες χώρες με την βοήθεια του πρώτου σινγκλ, “Feedback” που έγινε #4 στην Αμερική, #2 στην Αγγλία, στη Γερμανία, στη Γαλλία, στη Ρωσία και στην Πορτογαλία, #1 στην Ελλάδα, στη Ρωσία, στο Καναδά, στη Φιλανδία, στη Νορβηγία και στην Ιαπωνία. Δυστυχώς για την Janet, τα τρία επόμενα σινγκλ (Rock Wit U, Luv και Can’t B Good) απέτυχαν παταγωδώς στην Αμερική (#78,#69 και #92) αν και τα πήγαν καλύτερα στην Ευρώπη και στην Ασία. Έτσι, λοιπόν, παρ´ όλη την μεγάλη επιτυχία του Feedback το άλμπουμ εξαφανίστηκε σχετικά γρήγορα από τα charts και πούλησε μόνο 3 εκατομμύρια αντίτυπα παγκοσμίως.

All For You - Janet Jackson  March 17, 2001 - 19 Years Ago Today: Janet Jackson had the Hot Shot Debut at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart with her single, "All For You." This was Janet's 31st entry on the Hot 100 and her 37th including 3 Airplay Only singles. It was the leadoff single and title track from her 7th studio album (technically the 2nd single considering the song "Doesn't Really Matter" appeared on the album which was released 9 months prior and appeared on the motion picture soundtrack, "The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps," which co-starred Jackson and spent 3 weeks at No. 1) and it was a smash beginning a 7-week run at No. 1 on April 14, 2001 becoming her 10th chart-topper on the Hot 100 as well as spending 2 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard R&B Chart becoming her 13th R&B chart-topper. The single samples "The Glow Of Love" by Change. "All For You" was written by Jackson, Jimmy Jam Harris, Wayne Garfield, Mauro Malavasi and David Romani and earned Jackson a Grammy for Best Dance Record. It was the No. 1 Hot 100 single of 2001.
