ANGUS MAUDE: APRICITY
Tumblr media
Apricity – Angus Maude Release Date: September 22nd, 2017
Track Listing:
1. 95 Golf 2. Blonde Sun 3. Limestone City 4. I’m Happy You Exist 5. Want 6. Cominco 7. 2014 8. Writing for You 9. This Infinity 10. Home in a Week
In Apricity, Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Angus Maude ruminates on the complexities of love and relationships through acoustic and folk-driven tracks. Released in September 2017, tracks from the album have already garnered hundreds of thousands of plays each on Spotify, building off the success of Maude’s first album, Little Evenings, Long Nights.
Throughout Apricity, Maude veers away from the cookie-cutter folky acoustic singer-songwriter formula by adding vocal effects, and inserting a hint of synthy sounds in a style much reminiscent of Bon Iver (think For Emma, Forever Ago, not 22, A Million). This effect is particularly prevalent in “Blonde Sun,” which begins with simple strumming in the first verse, but in the chorus the song begins to show its body and depth with vocal layering and auto-tune effects. The album is thematically coherent, Maude often tying together his lyrics with slight turns of phrases, adding sincerity and tenderness to songs such as “Want.” “95 Golf” is similarly soft and romantic, with a healthy dose of pep, interrupted by in-studio recordings of Maude speaking, overlaid with a fuzz, the volume soft as to not interrupt the calming flow of the album. The album is carefully crafted in such a way that you’ll want to listen to it in chronological order, the same in-studio recordings in interlude “Writing for You” making way for the spacey and beautiful tune “This Infinity.” “I’m Happy You Exist” is a standout on the album, a song that takes the listener from being in love to having a broken heart, Maude’s voice angst-ridden and raspy by the end of the track for extra effect.
Apricity proves to be an album that is compelling and diverse, full of honest lyrics and creative effects. Maude cements himself as a strong songwriter and musician who puts his own spin on a genre rife with conformity.

Hey guys normally I wouldn’t promo something like this but Angus Maude, who is practically my cousin, started a record label in Vancouver BC, and he’s trying to get some more publicity. He’s also a really good singer (which I didn’t know about him I’m so confused) and he wrote this song called ‘I’m Gone’ that you can listen to here
And here’s their youtube channel
I just want him to find success in this because it’s his dream, and he’s really talented. Thanks for sharing!

YOUNG FRIEND RELEASES NEW SINGLE
Tumblr media
“I’ll hold you close, so you won’t be on your own / I’ll be honest though / I can’t save you when you’re all alone.”
So opens the latest single from Vancouver-based artist and recent Nyhla Records signee, Young Friend. “On Your Own” harbours steady vocals, intermittent beats and a ukulele-driven melody. It is immediate, playful—alternative pop with ease, still delivering a strong message in the kindness we give, imbalance, and taking care of oneself. Give it a listen below.

ANGUS MAUDE EXPLORES THE JOYS & FEARS OF LOVE ON HIS DEBUT, “LITTLE EVENINGS, LONG NIGHTS”
Tumblr media
Traversing the nexus between several dominant emotions can be a tricky thing, equal parts destructive and what fuels the creative mind. Fortunately, Angus Maude campaigns for the latter on his debut album Little Evenings, Long Nights; a testament to the spontaneity and joys of love when it’s there, and the restlessness one feels when it is not.
The Vancouver native sings of both literal and metaphorical connection on “Tattoos,” his soft tone nestled between cheery piano chords and hollowed drums (“When I breathe, I find my soul beneath your feet”). “No Good” is a nostalgic acoustic folk number with foot-stomping rhythms, while the whirly effects of “Stay with You” play to a modern arrangement. Maude channels a broken-hearted and defeatist perspective on “Tipsy,” singing “I've got no reason why I wonder why / heavy hearts ain't supposed to fly.” The fear of love can be a great feat to overcome, but the loss of love even greater—Maude's writing is a candid manifestation of this.
Little Evenings, Long Nights is available for streaming on Spotify. Read our interview with Maude below!
Where did your interest in music stem from?
There was never really a single moment when I discovered a love for music. I was just born into a very musical family. Ranging from my dad's love of the Sex Pistols to my Grandpa's love of Frank Sinatra. I eventually developed my own taste and as I grew up it became more diverse and so did my love for music. I've been creating my own music ever since I could talk, so there was never really a conscious decision or a specific moment that made me this way.
Who are your biggest influences?
Man, I have so much respect for Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Kristian Matsson and obviously Paul McCartney. Those guys are my idols right now, especially Paul and Kanye because I grew up listening to their music and I look up to their undying creativity.
You've written that the new album, Little Evenings, Long Nights, is a manifestation of fear and love. Did this differ, if at all, from the theme(s) of your previous releases?
I released a few EPs and singles in 2015 but they don't compare to my current work at all. If anything, they represent my first few steps into this industry and lifestyle. I was a closeted musician for so long and those projects were just stepping stones, so, theme-wise, there's not much to say about them. This album is a whole new experience for me and completely separate from my older projects. I spent 7-8 months writing and recording this album, I drove myself crazy, and in a way, the album's themes took shape as it was made. It's almost like a documentary. I'm a happy guy, but being locked in a room with no one but myself for eight months put me in some bad headspaces and I'm not kidding when I say that I nearly lost my mind.
Is there a track, or two, that are of particular significance?
The last song on the album, “Tipsy,” is an extremely personal song that I had to talk myself into keeping on the album. It was written and recorded at 4am after a night out with one of my good friends. I had a few drinks in me and for some reason was feeling quite down on myself. It's almost like a folky freestyle because a lot of it was just off the top of my head. I listened to it the next day and instantly put it in the scrap pile. But when I was arranging the final tracklist a few months later, it really stood out to me. It felt like the perfect summary of all that was said on the album. I, personally, feel like it hits the hardest after listening to the album from start to finish, in order. I really like that song.
What do you hope listeners can take away from your music?
I think, at least for right now, I just want people to dance to the few danceable songs, to cry to the sad ones and to just enjoy it all together. I also really hope it inspires people to create and follow a dream as far as they can.
Tell us a bit about your role with start-up Nyhla Records.
Yah, sure! I started a record label in March of 2015 called Nyhla Records, named after my dear grandmother, Nyhla. I wanted (and still do) to change the way choosing a career in music and art, in general, is perceived by society, at least in my city. There are some kids, like myself, who are just designed to create and would never succeed doing something they don't care about. I also wanted to build a platform where young artists can collaborate and release high quality music to a significantly large audience. So far it's going great and I can't wait for what the future holds for us!
What's up next for you? Do you have any upcoming shows?
Right now, I'm in the middle of forming a band and rehearsing/teaching them my songs. There will DEFINITELY be some live shows coming up this year so keep your eyes peeled.
If you could be any ice cream flavour, which would you be and why?
Probably mint chocolate chip because it's my girlfriends favourite.
