Canva suits users that are new to creating presentations. Ready-to-use presentation template in Canva ( Source )Ĭreate presentations quickly with minimalist templates. Small businesses that don’t make well-informed software purchase decisions-factoring in total cost, features offered, and usability-will be stuck with a solution that’s needlessly expensive and/or too complex to serve their business purposes.Įxploring alternative software products will give SMBs a better understanding of the market-in this case presentation software-which is necessary for finding the right solution. Instead, they need an easy-to-use solution that helps them present the project scope and budget to their teams so that the kickoff and close-out meetings are successful. Then there’s the fact that some professionals, such as project managers, won’t use all the features of MS PowerPoint. Small companies may not already have Microsoft Office because of the costs, and freelancers don’t necessarily have the budget for proprietary software. Having said that, PowerPoint isn’t for everyone. Many established companies have the Microsoft Office suite already installed on their workers’ computers, so invariably MS PowerPoint is a standard choice for executives, researchers, managers, and basically anyone involved in producing knowledge assets.Īs a standard industry tool, PowerPoint’s popularity is due to its wide-ranging and familiar features that make it easy to create visually striking presentations.

MS Office Legal and Corporate Training. It’s All About Being Comfortable At Work
Whether you work as a Secretary, Word Processing Operator or Paralegal, there is a lot going on on any given day. You start doing one thing and you are then pulled to something else when you didn’t even finish the first thing. Whether you are in a law firm or corporate firm, there is a mixture of downtime and flurries of intensity. For me, when I was a Coordinator, it was a moment to moment event along with dealing with numerous personality types (Attorney and Support Staff), and I needed to have a good depth of knowledge so that I could get through each day. Secretaries go through the same thing as well as Paralegals.
So what does this have to do with being comfortable? Good question. When you are in an environment that is demanding, the last thing that you want to have hold you back is not knowing enough about the software that you are using on a daily basis.
I am referring to MS Word, Power Point, Excel, Adobe Pro, Nuance and Outlook. In the course of a day, you really don’t know what scenarios will pop-up where the additional knowledge would be welcome.
Our job at AdvanceTo, is to share our knowledge with you (20 plus years, all three shifts, countless scenarios), and quickly close the gap in your level of knowledge. We would rather you have a solid foundation concerning the software you are using than you having to wait for a scenario to come “out of nowhere” and you now have to learn on the job while someone is stressing out and standing there waiting for you.

MS Office For Legal and Corporate Firms: Classes and Courses to Help You To Advance Your Skill Level and Career
AdvanceTo offers a variety of courses stemming from Basic-Advanced MS Office. This includes MS Word, Power Point, Excel, Adobe Pro/Nuance, as well as Outlook. The approach that we take provides you with courses that are fun, high value and the end result is that your skill level and understanding is substantially increased.
If you are sitting at work and you are saying to yourself boy, I hope he/she doesn’t ask me to do that financial table, that set of cross references, those manipulations to the footnotes, that multilevel outline, that Index of Terms, that heavily marked up Track Changes related document, that set of Merge Letters then you need what we offer.
Our training gives you the ability to have a deep and comfortable understanding of the material (MS Office) whether you are doing Litigation or Corporate related formatting and styling.
We make sure we give you great narrative material that allows you to relive all of the salient points that we touched upon in class.

Storyteller saturday! What was the first thing you knew that /had to be/ included in your wips? What's special about it? What is giving your motivation to work on your current projects? What's a neat worldbuilding thing you came up with?
Storyteller Saturday!
Hey hey @timefire25! Thanks so much for the asks, friend!
I’m gonna tackle these fantastic questions in order:
[H2H = Heart to Heart
FF = Fish Food
AOPC = All Our Painted Colors
TND = The Neither Days]
Tumblr media
1.  What was the first thing you knew that /had to be/ included in your wips?
H2H: Lesbians. Happy, live-beyond-the-end-of-the-story lesbians who can do magic and are ridiculously wholesome. Also: a strong, loving community; social commentary; enough fluff to stuff a whole set of pillows; cool science stuff.
FF: Humor! Without it, this story would be super duper way too dark. Also, lots of social commentary on… *checks notes*
Tumblr media
That. And legit depictions of mental health issues.
AOPC: A culture centered around ART. I love art. And stories.
TND: Okay so there’s this one scene coming up that’s super rad and I’m really excited about it. It’s been in my head since the beginning and it’s like, the second scene I thought up. I love the imagery and the symbolism and the feelings. It’s great.
Tumblr media
2. What’s special about it?
H2H: Sometimes you need to read something that will make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Fluff makes the world go ‘round, ya know? And lesbians gotta survive. Also, I’m passionate about found families, which is why the story has one at its very center. I love writing stories about people who don’t feel at home somewhere, so they find with other people who feel the same and call a new place theirs. It’s an important thing to learn: there’s always somewhere for you, and always someone out there who can catch your drift.
FF: Stories like this one are ways to see the truth of reality. Okay, that sounded super intense. What I mean is that this is a story about a group of people who have been used coming together to fight back against a system that’s doing its best to tear them down. Including accurate and respectful depictions of mental health in this story is important to me, too. I feel like this genre is a great place to explore that.
Also, I need to work on my humor writing so that’s pretty special, I guess.
AOPC: I loved the idea of a culture based on art. What do they value? How to they keep records of events and their history? How do they share information? What do they hold dear? It’s sort of my own version of the Legato Conservatory, for those who listen to TAZ. I don’t know of any other fantasy cultures 100% centered on art, either. It’s a story about storytelling and all the ways you can use it. And I think that’s pretty special.
TND: The metaphor and the symbolism, with the context of the canon, is so full of feels it makes my heart clench. It’s an unexpected coming together, a reaching out of two hands that meet in the middle while the world spins off-kilter around them. It’s an oh and a gasp in the same breath. It’s a fall that feels like flying.
That’s about as poetic as I can get without spoilers.
Tumblr media
3.  What is giving your motivation to work on your current projects?
Right now, not much, to be honest. It’s midterms time and I’m a grad student, so life is pretty much study hell right now. But my stories are my creative therapy, so I expect I’ll start writing again pretty soon after all my business chills out.
But on the regular: I really want to tell everyone about the big giant spoilers and how they happen in H2H, and one of the big confrontation scenes in FF (seriously, it’s a huge twist I don’t think a lot of people will see coming - one of them anyway 😉), and I want to figure out what the hell happens next in AOPC, and in TND, I really want to get to the switched POV chapter because it’s full of mutual pining and it offers a lot of really good insight into one character’s head (it’s my motivation to finish this transition chapter too because it’s taking forever).
Tumblr media
4.  What’s a neat worldbuilding thing you came up with?
H2H: The magic types I developed are pretty cool! Astromancy, Totem Magic, Sigilcrafting, and Pact Magic. There are a few others, but that’d be spoilers, my friend. Making these info posts was also very fun. I got to do nerdy research about magic and science!
And something I haven’t mentioned yet: liminal spaces are very important in this story! The town of Linsay is a liminal space. Gemma’s house is a liminal space. The police station is a liminal space for Oz. The lake is a liminal space. This is important: transformation takes place at liminal places. Magic is strongest there. The old is left behind and the new is just ahead. And the fae inhabit liminal spaces.
FF: I made a WIP page that mimics the Coalition of Heroes’ database! It took forever and it was really hard but I did it! And I think it looks rad.
In-world, hmm… I really like Lithium’s bar. It’s a place that’s like a hero-themed TGI Friday’s or Red Robin, and it’s also the hangout for off-duty heroes. They all chill there like it’s a cop bar for officers who are all undercover. It’s great. None of the civilians who go there know that they’re sitting next to high level super heroes. And Lithium thinks it’s hilarious.
AOPC: There are so many cool worldbuilding things in this story. One is the marriage ceremony I made up. The couple stands before the Namestone and the most senior Elder binds the bride’s left hand to the groom’s right. Then the men of the tribe line up behind the groom, and the women line up behind the bride. They’re ordered so the people closest to them, like family and lifelong friends, are first. One by one, the women dip their right hands in purple paint and mark the bride’s back with their hand print. The men do the same with green paint on the groom’s back.
After everyone’s marked the bride and groom, the Elder blesses the couple, holds their foreheads together, and then they turn around and press their backs together, mixing the paint and blending the colors together. The party starts as soon as their hands are unbound.
TND: Since most of the worldbuilding for this has already been done by the canon, here are a few recurring story threads I’m working with: Crowley vs. ducks, liminal spaces being the most comfortable and calming, “a good shock to loosen the tongue,” and the kinds of miracles that don’t work.
Thank you so much for these awesome questions!! 💜
I’ll add my tag lists since there’s a lot of information worth tagging about:

people are beautiful: a very long pt. 1 (about college students)
One of my friends makes her music playlists based off of every individual name of her friends, and then when she runs out of friends, based off all her favorite book and movie characters and idols. In low caps and ends each with a little period, like “ anna. ” She looks you in the eyes intensely and has ten thousand facial expressions with hand motions to match. She listens to heavy cycles of NCT next to twenty one pilots and the randomest guitar hits. She only sees the personalities of people she knows in the snyopses of books at Barnes and Nobles, eats frozen yogurt while worrying about drama while sitting crisscrossed in public, pulls a shower of compliments from a never-ending well of aggressive care and concern, and doubles over making the xD face when she laughs. She’s probably broken the volume knob on the radio in her car and is scarily very chill with abandoning the GPS on interstate highways.
Another girl smiles softly and talks in the highest, cutest voice and it sounds exhausting to be THAT sugary sweet all the time, but she is the literal personification of a mix between Fluttershy and PinkiePie, and she gifted me with one of those kawaii brand baby lamb lamps from Daiso the Japanese store for Christmas when I barely knew her, and it feels like she stepped out of the softest anime. She has at least fifty stuffed animals piled on her college dorm bed, and one of those sad-eyed kitten posters, and reads advanced theology and social justice pamphlets. She’s the pro-life club street activism officer. She’s also in pre-med and wants to be an obstetrician, so she pulls who knows how many all-nighters cramming information into her sweet sweet brain. Her dad’s retired but not done working yet and lives in Africa. She’s visiting him this summer and promised to send pictures of giraffes.
Another girl has THE frizziest hair, is the definition of short and filled with silent rage, could kill a man with her heels and I wouldn’t doubt it if I heard that she had. She’s been known to type FUCK in all caps 50 pt font on her laptop’s PowerPoint while suffering through hard lectures. She has the sharpest wings and most unbelievable makeup skills ever known to womankind and wears dresses with steep slits up the side. Every girl was on her waitlist for winter prom style prep. but she has a laugh like small wind chimes and her soul blossoms like a sunflower in front of her three closest friends, and she takes them out to get cheeseburgers at 3 in the morning if they feel like it. She confides jokes quietly and makes the best chemistry study guides.
There’s a “super senior” dude who is one of High Heel Terror Girl’s best friends. Since she approves of him, it’s fine, although while he doesn’t smell fishy, there’s still something hard to grasp about him, like a slippery eel. He hangs out in the freshman girls’ dorm lounge past 2 AM, and at first everybody thinks he’s a creep because he’s the only male in there past 2 AM, but turns out he just has a hard-to-read personality and his study group is always in there and he’s too suave for his own good. He responds immediately to tumblr humor and is too direct with his observances. I still can’t read him all the way, and I don’t think anyone can yet and it’s very likely no one will be able to. He’s kinda small sized and we thought he was gay for a bit, but he just likes hair gel. Actually, no, given this description, I think he might actually be gay. But if he is then it’s a far back in the shady shadows of the closet gay. He’s a Pandora’s box and we all kind of leave it that way, and he likes it that way. Maybe I should be scared. But he platonically brought my best friend flowers on her birthday because he knows she likes to braid them into her hair and he’s so fast to offer his help to anyone who needs it, he just lets people use him, walk all over him really, with a one-sided smile the whole time, and he’s known across campus as that “there in an emergency” guy. He wears suits on the nice days and will be off, wild in the workforce, come this fall.
Another girl is so absorbed in her love for logic and words and story and debate that you can see it in her walk and the creases in her dirty red hair. She watches buzzfeed unsolved and has origami hanging in staggered patterns above her desk and a Toothless statue crammed between empty bottles and toothpaste stains, and she has very niche knowledge about drinking no-no’s and dating know-how from her older sisters and the ordering of the soul according to Aquinas vs Plato from herself. She’s quick to throw fists at the first sight of injustice and shifts her weight eagerly when she’s sitting on her small feet on the couch and immediately has a solution or plan for everything. She’s always working on a new OC or binging a new Webtoon or practicing for DND. She has a bit of an instep and likes old sci-fi movies and classic rom coms and is, oh my Lord, the BEST baker ever. Stress seems nonexistent to her. Every Thursday night she makes croissants or cinnamon rolls or twists or giant cookies and leaves them on the kitchen counter for the taking. How she salvages orange rinds and entire cartons of eggs from the cafeteria is a mystery.
She’s dating an equally kind of short guy who has an endearingly cheesy smile like Midoriya’s from My Hero Academy, and who adores emo music played on the old jangly piano in the lobby. He’s part of the martial arts and fencing clubs and has been known to jump tabletop to tabletop in mock duels with his girlfriend. He’s the reason for the first time I watched Monty python and he handmakes his birthday gifts and blushes when he gives them to the chosen person and is a regular contributor to the conglomerate friend group chat. His mophead is often swiveling around searching for and keeping tabs of his friends who are 94% of them mischief makers.
Then there’s this girl down the hall who is taller than the green giant himself and has a shoe size that matches her massive love for concert-going. She took a gap year to teach children in Guatemala and rocks her spot on the pro volleyball team even though she’s only played for a few short years. It’s not her passion, but she cares about the members and likes the exercise. She cracks up over stupid economic projects, her laughter piercing through the dorm walls at random times, and upon me showing her them, thinks the sarcastic summaries on YouTube are a godsend. She sits quietly when she’s a guest and says she distracts herself from stress by “listening to other people vent instead.” She is the friend who corrales all the different friends into one, massive, Last Supper-esque convention meeting of friend tables. She somehow is “one of the guys” but also very definitely “one of the girls” and comes back at 12 AM exhilarated from a campus-wide capture the flag.
So @ my sorry self: don’t tell your depressed head that you don’t want to go back to college again. That you feel alone. People are around you and are beautiful, even if it seems they’re that way only in hindsight.

Macbook Air For Programming
Ok not sure where to post this but here it goes. Im going to be enrolling in a masters degree in September (if all goes well) which involves game development with Visual Basic, C sharp, XNA Studio etc and audio authoring for games. My problem is that basically every software package for games development and games engines is either made by Microsoft and therefore runs on Windows, or simply only runs on Windows. Just want some advice on the following - would i be better off installing Windows on my Mac with Bootcamp/Parallels and using programming software on another partition or would it be best to get an entirely separate cheap-ish Windows laptop purely for programming? Not sure which is best and what effect installing Windows on a Mac has on performance, compatibility issues with the software i'll be using and hardware etc when using it in Windows mode. Any advice is always appreciated

lol one of them finally asked in a private text exchange whether my semester was reading-heavy or writing-heavy or a mix of both
and i just gave her the fucking lowdown bc holy goddamn shit none of them have even ASKED even though i LITERALLY TOLD THEM I HAVE NO TIME DURING WEEKDAYS TO DO ANYTHING
directed reading workload: 1 meeting about once a month, for which i will write a full 10 page essay on a shakespearean play. to keep pace with this course, i have to read 1 full shakespeare play PER WEEK.
black trans studies workload: probably about 70-100 pages of reading per week, plus watching media and listening to podcasts, 1 reflection discussion board post per week, 2 replies to fellow students per week, plus an ongoing in-depth research paper that will have to count towards my MA. in addition to that, my second committee member will be meeting with me ABOUT this paper, and so i will have semi-frequent meetings with her to discuss it. oh and there’s also a final group project that we will be working on throughout the semester, as well. and, as i’m taking this undergrad course as a grad level course, i have an extra book. i anticipated the reading load this semester would be a lot, so i got a jumpstart on my extra book over winter break. i’m 60 pages in, thank fuck.
spanish workload: i have to do some work every single day. there are multiple quizzes, several translating assignments, powerpoints, practice assignments, reading the book, and then there’s a final translation project.
TA/grader workload: i have to keep up with all of the reading and lectures, which means 3-5 short stories or 1-4 chapters of a book per week, watching the lectures which can be 15-40 minutes long. then every few weeks i’ll have about ~50 decent-length assignments to grade. i also have office hours that i have to keep, and we’ll be meeting for our own little meetings every once in a while to keep consistent and professional with each other.
i also have a shift at the writing center, and i just had to turn down this longterm project that she wants all of the tutors to do, and she said that’s fine, but jfc.
then on top of that i have to find my third committee member, i have NO idea who it’ll be, i have to get a bunch of paperwork ready and done to do that, then i have to get all 3 of my MA papers done and written by the end of the semester, have my 3 committee members review them, revise the papers according to their feedback, then i have to do my oral exam.
all while grading finals and attending class
and also sleeping and feeding myself and trying not to die from stress
but not a SINGLE PERSON
has asked me what classes i’m taking, what they’re like, what the schedule has been
until JUST NOW when she said she hoped the first week wasn’t too hectic
then asked about reading vs writing heavy
and i’m like honey you seriously don’t fucking understand grad school what in the goddamn shit
i’ve only been in it FOR A YEAR AND A FUCKING HALF and you all seem to REFUSE to internalize what i’m saying or even just LISTEN to it
so fuck right off tbh i’m Tired
and this is from the one friend that i felt would generally listen a lot better. and in a way she is doing better bc she asked in a roundabout way.
but. it’s just. like. fucking wow.

MS Word Legal and Corporate: The Extra Knowledge Will Work To Your Advantage…
We have students who are secretaries who work in boutique firms as well as the top 100. They talk with us as to what they observe.
For the boutique firm which generally is a smaller firm (small to medium) with specific specialties in certain areas of the law. For the most part, there isn’t a WP Center to run to and the IT Department is small in comparison to what you find in the larger firms. This puts the secretaries in a position where they need to have a solid background in MS Office so that they can seamlessly assist the attorney they work for. This means they are proficient in MS Word (styling and formatting), and have a comfort level with Power Point and Excel. They also are comfortable with Adobe Pro and/or Kofax Nuance also known as Power PDF.
We also get reports from large firms where our students (many of whom are temps), must report 5 days a week while permanent staff has a hybrid schedule. Because they are there 5 days a week, many attorneys will approach them with work from the corporate side as well as the litigation side. They generally want the secretary to do the work and not just submit the work to a word processing center. This is where the need for proficiency comes in and this helps to increase your value. If an attorney is coming to you because they are comfortable that you can handle the work, that is a compliment that they came to you rather than straight to the WP Center.
AdvanceTo trains both Secretaries as well as WP Operators and both have their important place in the day to day operations of running a legal or corporate firm.
We make sure that between the operators and secretaries, there should not be a large disparity in terms of the knowledge base between the two. We show as much as possible to our Word Processing related students and those on the Secretarial side and this effort always pays off.
Below is a basic rundown of what we offer to our students:
We can train you from basic through advanced or target specific areas that you need help with. We also do test prep classes as well.
For those of you that are already working, take advantage and make sure that your skills are at their best. When your skills are really good, law firms and corporate firms will always be interested in you!
Basic-Advanced:
We do a thorough Basic - Advanced MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Pro/Nuance set of classes. These classes comfortably and substantially raise your awareness level and place you within the top 10% of the knowledge base.
Specialty Class:
We offer Specialty Classes such as Litigation vs. Corporate, Merge and Fillable Forms, PDF Editing and Adobe Pro/Nuance related procedures, Power Point Presentations and many more.
Tailored Class:
Our Tailored Classes allow you to mix and match so that you get the blend of material that suits your needs across the spectrum of possible topics and procedures. We do Tailored Classes for legal firms as well as individuals.
Video on Demand:
Finally we do video on demand for any particular subject matter. Just let us know what subjects you need and we will produce that for you. We also have video that is already produced.
We also do walkthroughs for any procedure as well as Help Desk related questions.
Classes of all types can be done in person (for firms) or by Zoom. Whether your firm needs to upgrade their skills as a whole or certain staff needs assistance with certain areas of the law or training on specific procedures relating to litigation or corporate law, we are here to help.
Give us a call to see how we can help with the training needs of your firm!

iPad smackdown: Microsoft Office vs. Apple iWork vs. Google G Suite
The iPad makes a great laptop, and nowhere is that more obvious than in its productivity tools. Apple showed the way years ago with its iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote), and Microsoft has validated the notion with its Office suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Of course there's also Google G Suite (Docs, Sheets, and Slides), which includes mobile versions of the apps for iOS.

The Investment Banking Associate: Senior Banker in Training, or Glorified Spell Checker?
If you’ve ever Googled a term like “investment banking associate,” hoping to discover what banking is like at different levels, you’ve probably come to a sobering conclusion:
The vast majority of “day in the life” stories are about Analysts.
There’s always been less information about Associates, VPs, Directors, and MDs, and that hasn’t changed much over time.
That’s partially because more senior bankers aim to stay in the field for the long term.
And if they do leave, they’re more likely to take a corporate finance job at a normal company or do something else “corporate,” where writing a tell-all account is not an option.
So, in light of this continued dearth of information, here’s our full run-down on investment banking associates, from the job description to exit opportunities:
The Investment Banking Associate Job Description
In the investment banking career path, Associates are one rung above Analysts in the hierarchy.
While Analysts are usually recruited from top undergraduate universities, Associates are promoted internally or recruited from top MBA programs.
Just like Analysts, Associates also spend time on:
Excel-based financial models and valuations.
PowerPoint-based pitch books and client presentations.
Confidential Information Memoranda (CIMs) and other marketing documents for clients.
Questions from clients and other team members.
Office politics and surviving abusive/crazy senior bankers.
So, what’s the difference?
If you’re an Associate at a large bank, the main differences are:
More “Checking” and Less “Doing” – You will spend more time checking Analysts’ work in Excel and PowerPoint, and less time doing it yourself.
More Communication and Project Management – You will also process instructions from the VPs, Directors, and MDs, and relay them to the Analysts; on deals, you’ll have more responsibility for following up with different parties and making sure the documents are in order for each step of the process.
More Client Interaction – You’re more likely to attend meetings with clients and potential clients (pitches), and when a client has questions about the details of a model or presentation, they’ll go to you.
More PowerPoint and Less Excel – And when you do the work, you’ll be in PowerPoint more often, drafting and editing presentations. You may still do some Excel work, particularly for more complex models, but you’ll almost certainly spend more time in PowerPoint.
The Associate role also varies significantly based on bank size, group, and seniority.
For example, if you’re at a regional boutique bank where the deal team consists of you and a single MD, you will act more like an Analyst, and you’ll start and finish the models and presentations.
But if you’re a third-year Associate at a bulge-bracket bank, and the deal team consists of you, an Analyst, a VP, and an MD, you’ll be more like a “project manager.”
The bank knows that you can do the work; now they’re assessing how well you can manage teams and work with clients before they promote you to the VP level.
Investment Banking Associate Hours
Associates have somewhat better lives than Analysts, but “somewhat better” means 65-80 hours per week rather than 70-80+ hours.
If you’re in a capital markets group, the hours might be reduced by 10-15%.
You will still be on call 24/7, and you’ll still have to respond to urgent requests, but you have it a bit better than Analysts because urgent requests usually go to them first.
Yes, banks now offer “protected weekends” and other lifestyle improvements, but it’s still a demanding job that will minimize your social life, hobbies, and activities for at least a few years.
Why Would You Want to Be an IB Associate?
Remember that ancient meme about “What People Think I Do / What I Really Do”? (investment banking version here).
The logic in that meme applies readily to IB Associate roles:
Why Banks Want to Hire You as an Associate – They want you to be a long-term employee and move up the ladder within investment banking. In exchange for your long hours, they’ll pay you well, train you, and groom you for the senior levels.
Why You Actually Want to Be an Associate – Many students and professionals who recruit for Associate roles do it for the exit opportunities in private equity and hedge funds – directly contradicting what banks want.
Why You Should Want to Be an Associate – You should want to do it because 1) You want to stay in IB long term; or 2) Because you’re interested in another role that’s a more viable exit opportunity, such as corporate development at a normal company.
The usual “exit opportunity” logic is: “Well, I missed investment banking right out of undergrad, but I want to get into private equity… so I’ll just do investment banking post-MBA and then move into PE from there!”
But the results from this strategy are mixed, at best, so don’t get your hopes up.
And yes, you get paid well as an Associate, but if that’s your main reason for pursuing the role, you need to re-think your life.
The cost of an MBA program, plus the opportunity cost of leaving your current job, plus the time and money required for networking and interview prep mean that it’s not worth it unless you plan to stay in finance for at least 5-10 years.
Investment Banking Associate Salary (and Bonus)
At large banks in the U.S., Associates tend to earn between $250K and $400K USD for total compensation, with base salaries progressing up from $140K to $180K.
Bonuses are significantly lower at smaller banks such as regional boutiques, so expect total compensation that’s 20-25% lower.
Pay is also lower outside the U.S., even in other financial centers such as London.
For more on this topic, please see our article on investment banker salaries.
A Day in the Life: What Does an Investment Banking Associate Do?
To illustrate the differences between the Investment Banking Associate vs. Analyst roles, let’s walk through the same day detailed in the Investment Banking Analyst article, but from the perspective of an Associate:
8:30 AM – 10:30 AM: You arrive at the office, meet with a VP to discuss an upcoming M&A pitch, and answer some of his questions/concerns about a new Analyst in your group.
Then, you review an Analyst’s status report on potential buyers in an M&A deal, make a few changes, and ask the Analyst to update the document and send it out.
10:30 AM – 12:00 PM: You join a meeting with a Director and Managing Director, who are speaking with a private equity firm about a potential sale of one of their portfolio companies.
Your job is to look intelligent, take notes, and occasionally answer questions about the market research you completed on potential buyers.
12:00 PM – 12:30 PM: You eat at your desk as you join due diligence calls for another deal; the Analyst is monitoring the entire session, so you only stick around for one call in the beginning.
12:30 PM – 3:00 PM: You start drafting the M&A pitch book that you discussed with the VP this morning.
You outline the structure and write text on some of the slides, but you leave out the parts that will require Excel paste-ins – the new Analyst will handle those.
3:00 PM – 5:00 PM: A Managing Director is on the road and needs hundreds of pages of briefing materials ASAP. You read the email and forward it to the Analyst on the team. It’s someone else’s problem now!
Right after that, a client calls you, upset about the management presentation your team is drafting for them.
She feels it doesn’t emphasize the company’s growth opportunities well enough, and she spends 30 minutes walking through all the changes she wants to make. You start making the changes.
5:00 PM – 5:30 PM: You review a CIM with an Analyst and explain how you want to change around the financial summary and market sections, handing off your printed version.
5:30 PM – 7:00 PM: The office’s Head MD and staffer call you into a room for a meeting.
They want your impressions of the new classes of Analysts and Associates; you’ve been here for over two years, so they value your input.
You try to strike a balance between giving useful comments to the MD and not sabotaging anyone’s new job.
7:00 PM – 10:00 PM: It looks like you might get to leave “early” – but then one of the VPs decides to have your team re-do an entire IPO pitch book.
Most of the work goes to the Analyst, but you need to stay there answering questions and outlining parts of the new presentation.
10:00 PM – 11:00 PM: You review the new IPO pitch book, make a few small tweaks, approve the qualitative/market slides, and leave the office right after that.
This was a ~14-hour day, which is on the long side, but not unreasonable for something in the Monday – Thursday period.
The same factors that create “bad days” for Analysts also create them for Associates: multiple live deals, big pitches, and last-minute emergencies.
However, office politics often contribute to bad days at this level as well – especially when meetings pull you away from work, as they did to the Associate here.
How to Break into Investment Banking as an Associate
The two main entry points into Associate roles are:
Out of Top MBA Programs – This path is more common in the U.S.; if you’re a career changer who wants to switch into IB, an MBA degree from a top program is, by far, your best chance of breaking in.
Direct Promotions from Analyst Roles – If you perform well as an IB Analyst for 2-3 years, you could get a promotion. Outside the U.S., this is the path most Associates follow because MBA-level recruiting is less developed in other regions.
It is very rare to get hired as an Associate if you’re coming from a completely different industry and you also haven’t completed an MBA.
Yes, you can find exceptions and cases where it has happened, but those stories should be viewed as outliers at best.
If you use a top MBA program to get in, you need to start preparing long before you arrive on campus, with networking, interview prep, and perhaps a “steppingstone role” right before the program begins.
In some cases, it might make more sense to complete a part-time or executive MBA program so you don’t have to quit your current job and so you have more time to prepare.
It tends to be extremely difficult to win offers from a non-target MBA program, though it is possible. However, you’ll most likely have to focus on smaller banks to pull this off.
For more, see the “MBA Path” part of our article on how to get into investment banking.
Investment banking interview questions at the Associate level are not that different: you still need to know accounting, valuation, and financial modeling, you still need a solid “story,” supporting mini-stories for the fit questions, and answers to the key objections, as well as deals you can discuss.
The main difference in is that interviewers often test for slightly different qualities, such as:
Ethics – You’ll be working with clients more directly, so “ethical dilemma” questions are common.
Humility – Bankers do not like over-confident MBAs who think they’re rulers of the known universe. And over-confidence is quite common in MBA programs.
Case Studies – Many interviews turn into “verbal case studies” where the interviewer describes a company or deal, and you have to walk through the analysis and answer questions about how you would advise the client.
Your Family and “Extracurricular” Commitments – It’s illegal to ask about your family or age directly, but bankers can indirectly ask about these topics with questions like “How do you spend your time outside of work?” To stay safe, you should give relatively vague answers.
The IB Associate Job: Right for You?
As with the Investment Banking Analyst role, the real question here is not, “Is the Associate job right for you?”
The real questions are:
If you’re currently an Analyst and you’ve performed well, should you stick around for a direct promotion? Or should you leave for a different industry?
If you’re a career changer, should you pay for a top MBA program so you can get this job?
For the first question, you should look at our coverage of exit opportunities to decide.
In short: if you truly want to be an investor or do something else that’s more creative/intellectual, or you hate banking and don’t care about the money anymore, then you should leave.
If not, or you’re on the fence about IB, but you have no better ideas and don’t mind the hours/lifestyle, you might as well stay and see where it goes.
As for the second question: if you have the right profile and you can put in the time and effort required and you understand that you don’t have a great shot of winning private equity or hedge fund roles, sure, go for it.
Going back to that “What People Think I Do / What I Really Do” meme , many MBA students recruit for IB jobs, believing that they can easily win buy-side roles from them.
While that does happen sometimes, it’s far easier to win these roles as an Analyst.
At the Associate level, more likely exit opportunities are corporate finance, corporate development, corporate strategy, and maybe less-competitive buy-side roles such as venture capital.
If you want to make the transition, you need to move quickly and tactfully and recruit in a good hiring market (see: IB associate exits).
That doesn’t make the Investment Banking Associate role a bad one.
But it does mean that you need to read the fine print carefully before jumping in – or you might end up the subject of the next great meme.

Code Builder for Minecraft: Education Edition leert programmeren in het klaslokaal
nieuwe, aantrekkelijk geprijsde Windows 10-onderwijs-pc’s van OEM-partners (Nederlandse prijzen nog niet bekend);

MS Office Legal and Corporate Secretarial and Word Processing Training - When You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know…
There are so many people who do Secretarial, Word Processing and Administrative work that have a huge disparity when it comes to their overall knowledge of the software they work with every day.
Many have never taken formal training while others have had the piecemeal training that many firms impart to their new employees. Most firms are not in position to give in depth training to the staff since it would keep those employees away from their duties for too long a period of time so they show what they can. This is basically the “need to know basis”. They do a good job to get them operating but they can’t layer the training like we can.
On the other hand, we don’t have the constraints of a legal or corporate firm. From day 1, our students receive an in depth thorough hands on set of Zoom classes working on both Litigation and Corporate documentation.
They work on the very document types that they will encounter at work. Our students go through a multitude of documents in terms of formatting, styling and automating. For those already in the industry, we fill in all of the gaps and finally the entire picture is clear. For those who are new to the industry, they are exposed to numerous concepts, procedures, vocabulary, legal document types and they learn the methods employed at top-tier firms.
This thorough approach places them in position to compete for jobs in major firms down to the single practitioner.
Most students did not realize how many topics and concepts were unknown to them.
