Benson strikes it rich in African art
Tumblr media
Hawaiian Falcon | Nov. 17, 1972 | Honolulu | Page 4.
Tumblr media
CMSgt. Harold E. Benson of the 546th at Hickam is striking it rich in oil these days.
Not the "black gold" variety, but the kind that comes in a multitude of hues and tones produced on the painter's palette and transferred to canvas.
The vein Sergeant Benson has "struck" has not made him rich in monetary gains, but has enriched his life with the joy that can come from creating paintings of beauty with a brush, oils or acrylics, a palette, canvas, and a goodly portion of imagination and natural talent.
He paints landscapes, still lifes and African art, using all media for his works. Sometimes he paints the landscapes on location on the island of Oahu. At other times he will work from a photo.
His still lifes are all done at home, either by transferring the objects just as he sees them to the canvas or through photos.
"When I feel that the work can be done better from a photo, that's the way it's done," says the painting sergeant. "Lighting has a very great part to play in this decision. If the lighting is subject to change due to the time of day, then I must work from a photo to maintain constant lighting.
“It wouldn't do to start painting a sunrise scene and not have the sunrise last for several hours while I finish the painting. Mother nature is not that cooperative."
Benson's African art paintings are originals created from ideas he has gotten from sculpture works in historical books at the base library.
Says the sergeant, “I have always been interested in art. I wasn't until my assignment to Hickam two years ago, however, that I finally found enough free time to devote to it.
“I really enjoy painting and plan to continue it as a hobby. It is very satisfying to capture a thing of beauty on canvas to retain for time to come.* he said.
Benson does most of his paintings with acrylics. "Oh. I've done many with oils, too," he says, "but I prefer acrylics because they don't take nearly as long to dry and that's very important to the work."
Anyone for an original Benson?
STROKES: Using a magnifying glass, CMSgt. Harold E. Benson checks the brush strokes on his completed painting searching for laws. His hobby is painting and he strives for perfection in each picture. (USAF Photo by Bill Seto)
Wilmot L.S. Bill Seto of Kailua, a retired photographer with the U.S. Air Force and the civil service, died Saturday in Kailua.

Day 3 You Can’t Go Home
Tumblr media
Many years ago, we were a blushing newlywed couple who promised to spend eternity together in bliss and monogomy, and after a few rough months, we managed to do exactly that. I used a cheat code in that I married the absolute best person I ever met. It’s a shame she cannot say the same.
We wedded in Old St. Teresa’s on KIng Street and set out to make a family on the outskirts of Bellevue, Nebraska, the home of Offutt AFB. Back in the day, it was Headquarters, Strategic Air Command where “Peace is Our Profession.” I worked across the runway in Building D, but that’s another story. This one is about a young couple.
Were we too young? Too naive? Too stupid to know better? Well, who isn’t when they first get married (or second or third or so on)? Having nothing else to do. we set up housekeeping in an apartment that used to be a dorm for a small college, and we happily got pregnant a few months later with our eldest ray of joy. We would move on base after her birth.
Lots of good memories of that old apartment with us learning to live with each other. I would do a hundred things different, and perhaps she would, too, but we found a place in the middle. We bonded over things like our daughter, the Cubs, Nebraska weather (omg), and the silly little things that dumb kids do when they build mutual experiences.
It wasn’t perfect because mistakes were made, but as I type this, I can’t think of any. I just remember feeling so lucky and blessed to have the life I had.
Come forward a few decades and life moves on. And our old apartment building is gone.
Tumblr media
I should have expected it. The top picture is from Google street view from November 2021, and it’s clear the old girl is on its last legs. Heck, it was old when we lived there just before the Internet Age (yes, that old). I was still jarred by seeing this hole in the ground from today. (For you movie trivia buffs, think of John Cusack in Grosse Pointe Blank who finds his childhood home has wiped from the earth and changed into a 7-11.)
You can’t see it but I’m standing on a tiny patch of sidewalk which all that remains for a home from years gone by. I closed my eyes and I could also sense a new mom and dad taking a stroller down that sidewalk with the two of them being so proud of their little baby. But now the brick walls are gone and only the ghosts remain, and the ghosts were quiet today.
Back on the road to Delaware tomorrow. Peace out.

SAC museum, Omaha - B36-J Peacemaker by 63842 Something a bit different, scans of a visit to the Strategic Air Command museum in Omaha, Nebraska, on our first visit to the USA in 1983. Refence to the museum's website shows that nearly 40 years on much of this magnificent collection is now housed indoors - not the case back then - as a result of a move to a new purpose built facility near Ashland NE in 1998. At the time of our visit the location was on the outskirts of Omaha itself, at Offutt AFB. Built by Convair, I think the B36 strategic bomber has claim to being the largest service aeroplane ever. I will post a wider picture in a later upload. This example dates from 1953 and has a serial 52-2217. These machines were designed from a specification issued by the US Department of Defence in the early 1940's, that assumed Germany would prevail across Europe in WW2, and that the USA would therefore need a bomber capable of mounting trans - Atlantic missions against a potentially hostile power. https://flic.kr/p/2krw4yL

Nebraska and Iowa flooding
Friends, I’m sure some of you know I live in Omaha, Nebraska, and I wanted to let you know that Nebraska and Iowa are being hit by some pretty devastating flooding right now. The flooding here has not made the national news. Several injuries, including hypothermia, have been reported, and at least one person has died - James Wilke, 50, who, when hearing that flood waters had stranded a motorist near his farm early Thursday morning, went out in his tractor to respond but perished when the bridge he was crossing collapsed. Two people are believed to be currently missing.
The flooding is the result of a very wet winter, resulting in a large accumulation of snow and ice that never had the chance to melt. The melting process began days ago, not with sun, but with heavy rainfall. This mass precipitation was a result of what they call the “bomb cyclone” that affected the entire Midwest region. It refers to a type of storm, a bombogensis, in which barometric pressure falls by at least 24 millibars in 24 hours.
The Platte River, which runs through Nebraska and is usually characterized as “a mile wide and an inch deep,” has been dumping water into the Missouri River (the border between Nebraska and Iowa), bringing it to record levels. Sarpy County, where my parents live, and Douglas County, where I live, was declared to be in a state of emergency as of Wednesday.
The flooding has cut off roads in West Omaha (with the failing of Union Dike), shut down the runway at Offutt AFB, shut down the training base of the National Guard, shutdown waste water treatment plants (meaning roughly 65 million gallons of untreated wastewater is currently being dumped into the river - daily - from the city of Papillion alone), is shutting down the Cooper Nuclear Station, completely closed off the city of Fremont, and required the evacuation of roughly 60,000 residents. Some towns, including Rogers and King Lake, Nebraska, have been completely enveloped. My in-laws, who live outside Norfolk, have been lucky enough to have only their basement flood a few inches.
Nebraska is a flat land, especially farther west. There is no ‘higher ground’ here. Water floods and it stays flooded; there’s nowhere for it to go. Flooding isn’t unusual here, and there are precautions in place. This is, however, the worst flooding in the last fifty years.
Nebraska and Iowa are part of the ‘bread basket’ that feeds the nation, and this flooding comes just before seeding season. We have a low population density, meaning that the damage is somewhat mitigated, but a large livestock population that is currently suffering and perishing. It’s calving season, and farmers have been unable to both move or deliver feed to their cattle and their young. Some farmers and ranchers have reported total loss.
All I ask is that you keep us in mind even while the national news does not. People here pride themselves on community and self-sufficiency and tend not to ask for help. The United Way has set up a relief fund for Nebraska and Iowa flood victims, pledging 100% of the money will be “directed to nonprofit programs meeting people’s needs for emergency shelter, food and more right here in our community.” You can donate by texting FLOODRELIEF to 41444.
A Habitat Relief Fund has been set up by Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever to give back to landowners who opened their properties to public access (97% of Nebraska is privately owned), and “to help with conservation practices including grass seedlings, grazing infrastructure, and temporary cover for affected producers. With your help, we will not only help wildlife and pollinators who desperately need it, but help restore land so that these farmers and ranchers can begin to rebuild.” You can donate to Pheasants Forever on their gofundme page.
All pictures are from the Omaha World Herald.

The E-4Bs NAOC (National Alternate Operations Center) is as ABNCP (Airborne Command Post) platform based out of Offutt AFB, Nebraska. This aircraft is also know as The Doomsday Plane, where in the case of a nuclear attack, war on the United State, a terrorist attack, this plane becomes the flying Pentagon and gives the SecDef and the Joint Chiefs of Staff a way to launch nuclear weapons and communicate to anything, anywhere in the world.

High School in the 80's was just like this, albeit with more shotguns and bolt actions that AK's, RPL's and RPG's. This is a very cool timeline of what happened from the start of the invasion to it's ultimate end. Red dawn alt hist wwIII Wiki "4 Sep 1985: Invasion Day; the assault begins across the Bering Straits and across the Rio Grande. Nuclear attacks on D.C., Manhattan, Kansas City, Omaha (Offutt AFB), and ICBM bases at Minot, Grand Forks, and Ellsworth AFBs in the Dakotas. Airdrops to seize key passes in the Rocky Mountains and limited drops elsewhere; the latter fail (i.e. Phoenix). 3rd Armored Division halts Mexican and Soviet advance into Arizona.
24 October: ComBloc offensive stalls from just north of Cheyenne, WY, across to Kansas and parts of Missouri. Soviets never get across the border. "General Winter" begins to set in by November, with both sides settling in, and gearing up for the Spring.
1 November: The US Army launches small scale counterattacks in Southeastern Arizona against ComBloc forces
18 November: US Army push Mexican and Soviet Combloc forces north of the Mexican border but attack stalls.
February: Wolverines guerilla group wiped out in Colorado. Two survivors escape over the Rockies to safety.
6 May 1986: Operation ADVENT CROWN, the first large scale U.S. offensive of the war, is launched across the Mississippi River into Louisiana. Attack stalls and is largely over by 17 May. U.S. forces were not fully ready, and the attack is largely seen as a political necessity. Attack leads to Combloc Spring-Summer offensive on 24 May.
June: Battle of Vancouver begins. Lasts until 3 Feb 1987." And so much more.
