Man with a Sword by Rembrandt and Studio, 1644. In this powerful and enigmatic painting, a man holding an ornamented Ottoman sword sits in the foreground of a dimly lit interior.1 Portrayed half-length and in three-quarter view, he engages us with steady blue eyes and a muted expression. His restrained smile and focused gaze reflect little about his state of mind, yet somehow render him familiar and approachable. He wears old-fashioned clothing consisting of a purple jerkin over a white blouse with ruffled cuffs gathered tightly at the wrists. Beneath a plush purple beret, the man’s long brown curls extend onto a black cape that envelops the side of the wooden chair. A gold chain and medallion hang prominently across his chest, with areas of impasto — as well as those on the silver and gold ornament on the sword — depicting the reflected light that descends from the painting’s upper-left corner.

FROM my 4Th hand made book COYOTE AMERIKA, page #22; “ A-Hole of (Introspection of) The World�� 16"x 14" oil over acrylic over collage on paper with glass beads. 1999. I was traditionally trained in beadwork by two Native American women who because of the nature of my art wish to be anonymous. Abstract Expressionism had a big influence on me in my teenage years which helped to give me inspiration and use beadwork in a new way as a painter would, using beads as texture, shape and line instead of always for motifs and symbols. My work is just as much sculpture as painting. Also in the old Master tradition of Master- apprentice I am a descendent of sculptor Rodin (The Thinker , Gates of Hell) which helped me to see and use beads as a sculptor would. My work is often transgressive and outrageous as Dali said, “ 99% outrage and 1% respectability. Often times people say of my work ,,” Leyba you have gone too far!“ Of which I reply, ” but that is the only place I have wanted to go.“ rather than corporate and art world defined narratives. One should trust a Master artist in their visions rather than enslave them by what is popular.
