Pierre Puvis de Chavannes • French • 1824-1898
Tumblr media
The Wine Press , 1865, The Phillips Collection
Puvis de Chavannes is best known for his work as a muralist. He was commissioned to create murals for public spaces in Paris, including the Pantheon (1874 – 78, 1893 – 98), the Sorbonne (1889 – 91), and the Hôtel de Ville (1891 – 94), as well as the museum in Amiens (1880 – 82). He also decorated the staircase of the Boston Public Library (1895 – 96). He was known as "the painter for France" and  Émile Zola described his work as "an art made of reason, passion, and will". His classically-inspired, allegorical themes resonate with the public to this day.

Van Gogh, Gaugin, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Picasso all recognized de Chavannes as a visionary, making him an important influence on modernism. He was one of a very few artists of any period who foresaw change and embraced it by not only supporting the avant-garde artists who were to be the future of art, but also by teaching and learning from them.

The tranquil themes of de Chavannes's works served to soothe a French public that was recovering from the Franco-Prussian War and the Commune of 1871-1872.

Olympia
Tumblr media
Édouard Manet, Olympia (1863). Oil on canvas, 130.5 cm × 190 cm. Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
Édouard Manet's Olympia, painted in 1863, stands as a pivotal work in the history of art, not only for its radical departure from traditional representations of the female nude but also for its confrontation with societal norms and the role of women within them. This analysis explores Olympia in depth, highlighting its significance and the controversy it sparked upon its debut.
Olympia and the Challenge to Convention: Manet's Olympia depicts a nude woman, reclining, staring directly at the viewer with a confrontational gaze. Unlike the passive, idealized nudes of earlier artworks, Olympia's direct gaze and the presence of a black cat at her feet were seen as shocking. Her hand firmly covers her sexuality, not in a gesture of modesty, but as a display of control and autonomy. This portrayal was a stark contrast to the accepted depictions of female nudes as objects of male desire.
Comparison with Titian's Venus of Urbino: To fully appreciate Manet's revolutionary approach, one must consider Titian's Venus of Urbino (1534), a work that Manet referenced in Olympia. Titian's Venus, also reclining nude, engages the viewer with a softer gaze, her hand passively resting near her pelvis, surrounded by symbols of marital fidelity and domesticity. Unlike Olympia, Venus's environment and demeanour suggest an invitation rather than a confrontation. The comparison highlights Manet's departure from portraying the female subject as an object of desire to a figure of power and defiance.
The Name 'Olympia' and Its Implications: The name 'Olympia' itself was loaded with connotations. In the Paris of Manet's time, 'Olympia' was a name often associated with prostitutes, adding another layer of scandal to the painting's reception. This choice of name was not accidental; it was a deliberate commentary on the commodification of women's bodies and the blurred lines between respectability and sexuality in 19th-century society. By naming his subject 'Olympia', Manet directly challenged the viewer to confront their preconceptions and the societal norms dictating the representation and treatment of women.
Controversy and Legacy: Upon its exhibition, Olympia was met with outrage and ridicule, criticized for its "vulgar" subject matter and "unfinished" style. However, this criticism failed to recognize the depth of Manet's critique of societal and artistic norms. Today, Olympia is celebrated for its bold defiance of traditional art, its pivotal role in the development of modern art, and its complex commentary on gender, power, and the gaze.
Olympia's Glance: A 19th-Century Rebellion? In light of Olympia's unflinching gaze and assertive posture, how do you interpret her representation in the context of 19th-century societal expectations of women?

#Repost @paintings_i_love № 3160 Piet Mondrian (Dutch, 1872 – 1944) Farm near Duivendrecht Datecirca 1916 oil on canvas 86.5 x 108.5 cm Art Institute of Chicago • Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan, after 1906 known as Piet Mondrian was a Dutch painter and art theoretician who is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. He is known for being one of the pioneers of 20th-century abstract art, as he changed his artistic direction from figurative painting to an increasingly abstract style, until he reached a point where his artistic vocabulary was reduced to simple geometric elements. Mondrian's art was highly utopian and was concerned with a search for universal values and aesthetics. He proclaimed in 1914: "Art is higher than reality and has no direct relation to reality. To approach the spiritual in art, one will make as little use as possible of reality, because reality is opposed to the spiritual. We find ourselves in the presence of an abstract art. Art should be above reality, otherwise it would have no value for man." Mondrian's work had an enormous influence on 20th century art, influencing not only the course of abstract painting and numerous major styles and art movements, but also fields outside the domain of painting, such as design, architecture and fashion. • #Mondrian #DutchArt #postimpressionismo #postimpressionisme #Masterpiece #Abstract #oilpainting #artforeveryone #malerei #19thcenturyart #20thcenturyart #NatureMorte #impressionism #postimpressionism #europeanart #landscape (à Sète, France) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpUMm3MorIF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Chrinstopher Middentarnt, prolific inventor, scientician, and lundsman.
Messr. Middentarnt was responsible for some of the most successful and creative inventions of the late 19th century. In addition to great works like his breathtaking Ayefull Pointy or his life changing Munging Fork, Middentarnt devised hundreds of different and novel methods for preventing the accumulation of mung, lorm, and grint from household toiletries, and wrote many scholarly works on combatting overdevelopment of schmill.
It should be mentioned that even though he was a master lundsman, he claimed until his death he was not Irish and spent much of his career hurling insults at famed cordsman Fertrand L. Harpoont for suggesting he was, indeed, from the land of Eire.

#Repost @paintings_i_love № 3134 Claude Monet (French, 1840 – 1926) Bouquet de glaïeuls, lis et marguerites dated 1878 Oil on canvas Private collection • Painted in 1878, Monet’s bouquet of gladioli, lilies and daisies beautifully demonstrates the artist’s ability to evoke the lavishness and vitality of flowers, rendering them with extraordinary freshness and spontaneity. Rather than relying on the trompe l’oeil technique often associated with the still-life genre, Monet drew upon his own creative ingenuity and his interpretation of the display before his easel, applying the newfound Impressionist technique to an indoor subject. In the present composition, Monet applied his exuberant palette not only to the flowers, but also to the vase and the table top which reflects the various colors of the bouquet—an effect which is visual suggestive of of the artist’s own palette. The vase itself appears to be decorated with a floral motif, and Monet’s subtle touches of the white pigment beautifully convey the shine of the porcelain. Having temporarily abandoned the still-life motif during his years at Argenteuil earlier in the decade, Monet embraced this subject again in Vétheuil, where he lived from the summer of 1878 until the end of 1881. Delighted by the rich vegetation that surrounded him, Monet often set up his easel in his own garden, painting its lavish trees, bushes and pots of flowers… • • • • • • • #Monet #ClaudeMonet #FrenchArt #FrenchArtist #Masterpiece #artforeveryone #art #fineartpainting #paintingoftheday #peinture #landscape #historiadelarte #storiadellarte #peintures #historyofart #arthistory #19thcenturyart #oldmasters #impressionism #impressionismo #europeanart #impressionisme #20thcenturyart https://www.instagram.com/p/Cowd_UqInT6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
