Five Reasons Kaziranga National Park should be a part of your bucket list

 John Muir was right to say that "The clearest route into the Universe" is through a forest wilderness. So, we went to Kaziranga National Park to get some clarity. Why Kaziranga? Because it's closer, more affordable and takes less time to get from our side.

Kaziranga National Park is first mentioned. It reminds us of the one-horned rhino, and it is, undoubtedly, the main attraction that draws lakhs of tourists each season. The Park covers an area of about 430 kms and boasts a population greater than 2400 onehorned rhinos. Kaziranga Forest Department has been extremely strict in protecting Rhinos against poachers. According to reports, forest rangers have killed approximately 50 poachers as part of their efforts to save the species.

It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1985 by UNESCO. This is an extraordinary wildlife experience in Assam, along the south bank the river Bramhaputra. There are three main ranges in the forest: Agartoli (Western), Kohora (Central), and Burapahar( Ghoraketi). Tigers and Migratory Birds also draw visitors, but you have to be very lucky to spot one. The locals told us that it was a rare sighting. We were able to see five of them together.

The Park is home to other animals, including wild Indian elephants, Indian bison, Hog Deer and Barking Deer, leopards, tigers, wild boars, wild buffalo, Hoolock Gibbons and Jackals.

Bird watchers will find the National Park a paradise as it houses a wide variety of bird species. Black Kite and Pallas's Fishing Eagle are just a few.

Kaziranga is home to many small water bodies. It also has a large spread of tall elephant grass, marshland and thick tropical forests.

1.Enjoy the Elephant Safari, but don't forget bananas

One of the most popular tourist attractions is jungle safaris on elephant. There are about 25 elephants trained and Mahouts authorized to conduct the ride. The ride takes place in the Western Range (Bagori) at dawn. It is possible to see wild Elephant herds roaming about, or Indian Rhinos browsing by visitors casually. This makes wildlife viewing fun.

The open months, i.e. from November to April, offer elephant rides. There are two rides that depart at around 5:15 and 6:30 a.m. but they must be booked in advance (at least one day prior) to avoid the rush.

There are many bananas available at the boarding station to feed the elephants. After you've finished your ride, remember to give the bananas to them. Elephants love bananas!

2. Adventure in open Jeep Safari

The Western Range of Kaziranga National Park is the only area where elephant safaris are allowed. The adventurous jeep safaris are a great way to explore the inner forest areas of the eastern, central, and burapahar ranges. Open Jeep safaris with a guide and driver are the best way to see the amazing nature and animals of this area.

A Jeep safari allows you to explore the beautiful forest's flora & fauna in a unique way. The government has standing instructions that guide tourists into the forest. These instructions include the do's, don'ts, and the fact that they are responsible for their own safety. Permits must be obtained from the office at the main entrance before one can enter the forest. Travellers are not permitted to descend from the jeep anywhere on the premises.

Jeep Safari is available between 1 November and 30 April. Jeep Safari departs between 07.00 and 09:30 AM and can stay until noon. They depart at 13.30 to 15.00 in the afternoon and can stay until sunset.

3. Trek to Kakochang Waterfalls

Kakochang waterfalls are another amazing spot near the forest. They can be found at 32kms from the Kohora Gate. These stunning waterfalls are a great spot for a picnic or short visit if you're visiting Kaziranga National Park. On the same day, we covered Elephant Safari Waterfalls as well as the Jeep Safari. This may sound like a lot, but it was necessary because we were short on time and didn't want to miss any important details.

The journey was what attracted most attention. The waterfall flows down, creating a river stream which takes many hairpin bends through the rocks to find its way. We traveled through Bokakhat to reach the waterfalls. We crossed five river streams in our jeep, but couldn't go any further due to the large rocks and lack of roads. This was the most exciting part. We hiked all the way to the waterfalls, crossing 5 more streams of water and climbing along the narrowest trails.

It was a stunning view.

To get the best view of the lake, we trekked down to the bottom to enjoy the breathtaking views and the peace that comes with it. Picnickers will find plenty of space to enjoy some time outdoors. The lake is approximately 50-60 feet deep according to locals. Don't try any crazy stunts!

4. Learn a little bit about Assamese culture by dancing a few steps

Assam Tourism has done everything possible to promote tourism in the National Park. One of their efforts includes the one-hour cultural show held at the Assam Tourism Gate, Kohora. You can experience Assam's culture through the Jhumur and Bihu dance performances.

Bihu is an Assamese folk dance that is performed during the Assamese New Year festival Rongali Bihu in April. The dance is performed by both men and women, and features quick hand movements and refreshing steps. The Mekhla Chadors, a traditional Assamese dress, are worn by dancers in Off-white or red colours. The performance includes a variety of locally-made instruments, such as Pepa, Flute and Dhol.

Jhumur, another traditional Indian dance form is also found in the eastern region. The dance involves young girls dancing together, with their hands on each other's waists. They also move their legs forward and backwards synchronously. There are few male participants who sing and play musical instruments.
