The poker boom in the US continues its upward swing, thanks to television coverage and online poker sites. Here are two recent proofs of it:

1. While slot machines and blackjack still rank as the most popular games in Las Vegas, casinos are tearing out blackjack tables and replacing them with poker tables.

Revenue from poker grew 18 percent last year, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board. But revenue from slot machines grew just 3.3 percent and blackjack revenue grew 1.4 percent.

2. At Canterbury Racetrack & Card Club near Minneapolis, cards now bring in more revenue than horse racing, and poker income is up 50 percent from a year ago.

The popularity of poker has surprised Randy Sampson, president of Canterbury, but he's not complaining. Canterbury takes a "rake" of up to $4 from each poker pot in the card club. Those $4 chunks added up to $7.65 million in the six months ended June 30, with 15 percent of that sum going into the racetrack's purse fund and a breeders' trust fund.

"We're horse-racing people. Our focus is always going to be horse racing," Sampson said. "But (poker) has been a tremendously helpful vehicle in subsidizing and improving the racing operation.

"There's a little bit of an awkward feeling to the card club being more than half of our revenue and driving the growth of the company," he said. "But in the end, they work well together."

Sebastian Sinclair, president of Christiansen Capital Advisers, a Maine-based consulting and research firm serving the Togel Hongkong gambling industry, says: "Games tend to follow generations. It's like after World War II - the GIs came home and they played craps. They learned it in the service, and it had a 20-year run.

"I think a lot of what you're seeing in the rising popularity of poker is Generation X. They're getting into their 30s, they have discretionary income, and poker has become a spectator sport."

Major One Project: Year 3 Project Proposal  

Section 1. Rational and concept

For my Major project, I have decided to treat this project as a creative, critical, and experimental practice, to further improve my creative abilities. I will create a metaphorical and visual self-portrait of myself through moving image, and film practices. My intensions are to better understand myself, as well as to find better ways to creatively realise thoughts and feelings of others. To help portray stories, and future subject matters. In preparation for project 10 and onwards,

I plan to set out a series of collective visuals, which can best describe and portray the inner me. These being my thought processes and to visualise the cognitive and behavioural characteristics of how my brain works. This project will hopefully support my motive in imaginatively representing ways to portray thoughts and feelings of future individuals I wish to collaborate and/or represent. My targeted audience will be of anyone who seeks escapism, visual pleasure, and a critique. I would like to think it’s aimed towards anyone, no matter your age group, gender and who you are.

Section 2. Methodology. Influences, sources, and ideas.

This project is how I, as a creative, think, and is navigating in today’s culture and society. To do this I will conduct research in how to professionally manage time, and find ways to best describe the collateral, confusion of the brain via sound, and image. I will do this by experimentation, inspiration from everyday material and sources.

In terms of research into theorists, artwork and short films, I will continue to find appropriate materials, as I move forward. So far, I have taken inspiration from a number of filmmakers, and visual, moving image artists, from whom I have collectively found in project 8 and during the summer. These being photographer and filmmaker, Axel Morin, filmmaker. As well as Marie Menken, Eilif Bremer Landsend, and Zachary Epcar. I have also taken video installation inspiration from visual artist chloë delanghe and Eva Giolo.

For the execution of this project, I plan to show case the piece as a fourscreen video installation. I also plan to create a onescreen piece of the project, which will be created purely for the accessibility of the internet.

Section 3. Techniques processes timetables.

For October I plan to spend 25 to 30 hours per week on my major project alongside my part time job and extended essay. I will include researching material, personal footage and experimentation via Adobe  Audition, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Premiere Pro. My intensions for October and the first half of November is to find ways to best describe my mood and how I see the world through visual composition, and light. In November I also plan to move forward, with an appropriate scheduling of time management, to increase my time on the project. I will also utilise the space provided on campus, using their installation room, computers, and camera equipment.
