The FDA has issued a warning for consumers to stop purchasing and using two eyedrop products — Dr. Berne's MSM Drops 5% Solution and LightEyez MSM Eye Drops Eye Repair — due to bacterial and fungal contamination. The LightEyez product was contaminated with the drug-resistant bacteria Pseudomanas aeruginosa, Mycobacterium, Mycolicibacterium and Methylorubrum. The Dr. Berne's product was contaminated with Exophiala fungi. Both products list their active ingredient as methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), which is not found in any legally marketed eye drugs in the U.S. Neither of the products have caused adverse effects in consumers yet, the FDA said. This warning comes after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported an outbreak of Pseudomonas aeruginosa found in a handful of other brands of artificial tears or eyedrop products. The bacteria strain had been found in 81 people — four of whom had died from infections, according to specimens collected between May 2022 and April 2023, according to the CDC's update this past May. Over 10 different brands of ophthalmic drugs were involved in these cases, the CDC said. But the most common was Ezri Care Artificial Tears, which the Food and Drug Administration warned consumers to stop purchasing in February.

In Baltimore City, MD: 12 y/o, 10lb blind senior found a stray in very rough condition is still so sweet - BARCS, Baltimore MD
Hayride- 12 years, unaltered female, 9.8lbs
12-year-old Hayride was found outside all alone with a leash still attached to her collar. We're not sure how long she's been running a stray for, but it's clear she's lacked basic care for quite a while now. Despite this, though, Hayride has been incredibly trusting and sweet with all of us so far.
Upon examination, our vets noted that Hayride has chronic otitis, a severe flea infestation (which we've treated for) and pyoderma, a large mammary mass and several tiny possible masses, and is likely blind due to a mature cataract in the right eye and a micro-ophthalmic left eye with secondary entropion. She's been started on a couple of meds for now, but removal of mammary mass(es) and an enucleation should be considered.
No senior should spend their days in a shelter and sweet little Hayride here is of course no exception. She is currently on stray hold until close of business 10/17, but due to her age and multiple medical issues, we are hoping to find placement for her as soon as possible.
Please let us know if your organization can help!
Thank you,
The BARCS Rescue Team

Could it be said that you are a Candidate for LASIK Surgery?
LASIK surgery is an extraordinary kind of ophthalmic surgery that permits people to be freed of glasses and other restorative material. The surgery includes cutting a fold of corneal tissue - , the bended, straightforward, front facing external layer of the eye - and afterward utilizing a laser to bend within the cornea to cause a change in refraction. By changing the shape of the inward cornea, the light that enters the eye is refracted in an unexpected way. For those with vision debilitations, this methodology takes into consideration restoration of vision that regularly requires contact focal points or glasses. This surgery has a high success rate ordinarily and many clients are left satisfied.
Likewise with any surgery, ophthalmologists (eye surgeons) do screen patients to check whether they are reasonable or not. In spite of the potential life-further developing advances the surgery offers, not every person can exploit these advantages and others might be excessively risky for surgery. To start with, the ophthalmologist needs to decide if the vision shortages can be amended by LASIK surgery. LASIK surgery just chips away at patients that have visual issues exclusively because of refractive mistake revised by glasses or contact focal points. Vision issues from another clinical issue isn't agreeable to adjustment through LASIK surgery. Furthermore, a few ailments might make LASIK surgery a higher risk. People with a few clinical issues, like uncontrolled diabetes and history of stroke, may not be great candidates for surgery because of their clinical issues obstructing the recuperating and success rate of surgery. People with unfortunate life expectancies are likewise not justified to be great LASIK candidates because of restricted advantage of surgery and the risk of complications during the genuine surgery. Patients likewise over a particular age may not be a candidate for LASIK too. Last, a few patients might have refractive blunder so serious that LASIK surgery won't be really useful.
A surgical assessment must be finished by an authorized ophthalmologist. Fortunately, many ophthalmologists offer free LASIK assessments for people who are keen on the surgery. This is all the more valid for ophthalmologists in confidential practice. The assessment commonly includes an intensive ophthalmology test and survey of ailments that might make one more helpless to complications during or after LASIK surgery. With propels in LASIK technology coming out like clockwork, various assessments can be made for various LASIK techniques with benefits and downsides redid for every individual assessed. The ophthalmologist will then provide the individual with a decision of regardless of whether to have the surgery, after the risks and advantages have been made sense of. LASIK surgery is considered cosmetic, so some insurance organizations may not pay everything for surgery.

LASIK EYE SURGERY WHAT IS IT AND HOW DOES IT WORK
If you're fed up of wearing either glasses or contact lenses or find it inconvenient to have change between both or both, then LASIK (Laser-Assisted with In-Situ Keratomileusis) surgical procedure for your eyes could be exactly what you require. This is a sort of refractive surgery that seeks to treat far-sightedness, near-sightedness, and astigmatism, and it's become one of the most requested surgical procedures around the globe.
If you're considering Laser Lasik Treatment in Thane You may want to talk with an Eye Specialist Doctor from Thane as well as Dr. Ruchika Kedia , who will explain the procedure, and determine if it's suitable for your eyes.
What is LASIK Eye Surgery?
(Lasik Laser Treatment in Thane)
LASIK eye surgery involves reshaping the cornea, which is the transparent front of the eye, so that light enters the eye and is focused on the retina at the side in the back of your eye. It is accomplished by specific lasers that strips tiny portions of corneal tissue, thereby changing the shape of the cornea.
The procedure will begin. Your doctor will utilize a computer to produce a precise plan of your cornea. They will determine the exact amount of corneal tissue that needs to be removed to achieve the desired correction. They will then use an instrument that is called a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser to make a small and hinged flap over the cornea's surface. The flap then is removed to expose the corneal tissues, and then the laser can be used to shape it.
When the cornea has been reshaped, the flap is moved and then left to heal itself naturally. Because the cornea is capable of healing on its own so there's usually no need for stitches or bandages.
Tumblr media
What's the Process? LASIK Eye Surgery Work?
LASIK eye surgery is performed by altering the shape of the cornea to correct refractive error. Refractive issues occur when the design of the eye blocks the light from focusing properly onto the retina. This can lead to blurred or discolored vision.
(Eye specialist physician in Thane)
If you suffer from near-sightedness or myopia the cornea can be high or the eye isn't long enough, leading light to be focused ahead of the retina instead of it. LASIK eye surgery can correct this by flattening the cornea.
Tumblr media
In farsightedness or hyperopia, the cornea may be too smooth or the cornea is too narrow, causing light to focus on the retina rather than upon the retina. LASIK eye surgery can rectify this by making your cornea steeper.
Tumblr media
The cornea in astigmatism is shaped in an odd way, leading to distortion of vision across all distances. LASIK eye surgery may correct this problem by smoothing the imperfections in the cornea.
Eye surgery with LASIK is a secure and efficient option to increase your eye's vision and lessen your dependency on contact lenses or glasses. However, it is important to speak with an experienced eye specialist doctor in Thane for instance, Dr Ruchika Kedia in order to establish whether LASIK is right for you. Reconstructive Eye Surgery: How Oculoplastic Surgeons Restore Function and Appearance
The eyes are not only the windows to the soul but also a vital part of facial expression, identity, and health. When injury, congenital anomalies, aging, or medical conditions compromise the eye’s appearance or function, reconstructive eye surgery becomes essential. This is where the highly specialized role of an Oculoplastic Surgeon comes into play. At Amanat Eye Hospital, renowned as the Top Eye Hospital in Rawalpindi, oculoplastic surgery is performed by experienced specialists who merge the science of ophthalmology with the art of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Let’s explore how these procedures transform lives by restoring both function and aesthetic balance to the eyes and surrounding areas.
Tumblr media
What Is Oculoplastic Surgery?
Oculoplastic surgery also known as ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery is a sub-specialty of ophthalmology that deals with the eyelids, tear ducts, orbit (eye socket), and parts of the face. An Oculoplastic Surgeon is a medical doctor who has undergone extensive training in both ophthalmology and plastic surgery. Their expertise allows them to manage both the medical and cosmetic aspects of eye-related concerns, offering solutions that enhance function while ensuring a natural appearance.
Common procedures in oculoplastic surgery include:
Eyelid reconstruction
Ptosis (droopy eyelid) correction
Orbital fracture repair
Tear duct surgery (DCR)
Removal of tumors or growths near the eyes
Cosmetic procedures like blepharoplasty
Excellence in Eye Reconstructive Care
Located in the heart of Rawalpindi, Amanat Eye Hospital is recognized for its advanced facilities, top-tier medical professionals, and commitment to excellence. As the Top Eye Hospital in Rawalpindi, it attracts patients not only from across Pakistan but also from abroad.
The hospital's Oculoplastic Department is equipped with:
The latest microsurgical tools
Advanced diagnostic imaging
Dedicated recovery and post-operative care units
Skilled surgeons trained internationally in oculoplastic and reconstructive techniques
When Is Reconstructive Eye Surgery Needed?
Reconstructive eye surgery becomes necessary for a range of medical, functional, and cosmetic reasons. Some of the most common scenarios include:
1. Trauma and Injury
Accidents or trauma to the face and eye area can lead to fractures, lacerations, or damage to the delicate structures surrounding the eye. Oculoplastic surgeons repair these injuries to restore normal function and facial symmetry.
2. Congenital Abnormalities
Conditions such as ptosis (drooping eyelid) present at birth can affect vision development in children. Early surgical intervention by an experienced oculoplastic surgeon ensures proper visual function and normal appearance.
3. Aging and Functional Changes
Aging leads to changes in the eyelids and surrounding tissue, such as:
Droopy upper eyelids obstructing vision
Loose or turned-out lower eyelids (ectropion)
Excess skin causing discomfort or aesthetic concern
Reconstructive surgery addresses these changes, improving both appearance and quality of life.
4. Tumors or Cysts Around the Eye
Benign or malignant tumors in or around the eyelids and orbit can be removed through precise surgical techniques. Reconstructive procedures then ensure the area retains its shape and function after removal.
5. Thyroid Eye Disease (TED)
Thyroid conditions can lead to bulging eyes, retracted eyelids, or eye socket inflammation. Oculoplastic surgery relieves pressure, repositions tissues, and enhances facial harmony.
6. Blocked Tear Ducts
Blocked tear ducts cause excessive tearing and infections. A common reconstructive procedure called Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) creates a new drainage pathway to resolve this issue.
Advanced Diagnostic Capabilities at Amanat Eye Hospital
Before any reconstructive surgery is performed, a thorough diagnosis is crucial. At Amanat Eye Hospital, the evaluation process includes:
High-resolution imaging (CT, MRI, and orbital ultrasound)
Functional tests (eyelid movement, tear production, vision tests)
Cosmetic assessments to ensure symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing results
These diagnostics help the Oculoplastic Surgeon design a personalized treatment plan tailored to each patient’s specific needs.
What to Expect from Oculoplastic Surgery at Amanat Eye Hospital
At Amanat Eye Hospital, every oculoplastic procedure is guided by a patient-centric philosophy. Here’s a general overview of the journey:
1. Consultation and Assessment
A detailed discussion with the oculoplastic specialist helps determine the nature of the problem and the goals of the surgery. Photos and imaging are used to plan the surgery precisely.
2. Customized Surgical Planning
No two eyes—or faces—are the same. Every reconstructive procedure is uniquely tailored to the patient's anatomy, health condition, and cosmetic preferences.
3. Minimally Invasive Approach
Where possible, surgeons at Amanat Eye Hospital use minimally invasive techniques to reduce scarring, shorten recovery time, and ensure natural-looking results.
4. Post-Operative Care and Follow-Up
After surgery, patients receive detailed care instructions, medication, and regular follow-ups to monitor healing and assess outcomes.
Cosmetic and Functional Benefits
Though categorized as reconstructive, most oculoplastic surgeries bring significant cosmetic improvements alongside functional restoration. These dual benefits include:
Improved Vision: Lifting droopy eyelids or correcting turned-out eyelids restores a full visual field.
Enhanced Appearance: Patients often look more refreshed and youthful after eyelid surgery or orbital reconstruction.
Boosted Confidence: Reconstructive surgery can profoundly impact self-esteem and social interactions.
Better Eye Health: Correcting eyelid positioning prevents dry eyes, tearing, and other complications.
Why Choose Amanat Eye Hospital for Oculoplastic Surgery?

Eye Surgery: Transforming Vision for a Brighter Future
Overview:
Ophthalmic surgery refers to surgical procedures performed on the eye or its surrounding structures. This specialized field encompasses a variety of techniques aimed at correcting vision problems, treating eye diseases, or addressing injuries. Common types of ophthalmic surgery include cataract surgery, which involves the removal of the cloudy lens and its replacement with an artificial one, and refractive surgery, such as LASIK, which reshapes the cornea to improve vision. These procedures can significantly enhance the quality of life for individuals suffering from visual impairments. As a result, patients can expect not only enhanced vision but also a greater understanding of their eye health and the importance of regular check-ups.
Tumblr media
What are the types of eye surgery?
There are various categories of surgical procedures designed to address different eye conditions and improve vision. These types of eye surgery can range from corrective interventions, such as LASIK and PRK, which reshape the cornea to enhance refractive errors, to more complex surgeries like cataract removal, where the cloudy lens is replaced with an artificial one. Additionally, there are surgeries aimed at treating retinal issues, such as vitrectomy, which involves the removal of the vitreous gel to address retinal detachment or other disorders. Furthermore, eye surgery can also encompass procedures for managing glaucoma, such as trabeculectomy, which creates a new drainage pathway to lower intraocular pressure.
What are the benefits of eye surgery?
Eye Surgery offers a multitude of advantages that can significantly enhance an individual's quality of life. One of the primary benefits is the improvement in vision, which can lead to greater independence and the ability to engage in daily activities without the reliance on corrective lenses. Many patients experience a reduction in visual disturbances, such as glare or halos, which can be particularly beneficial for those who drive at night or work in environments with varying light conditions. Additionally, eye surgery can alleviate the discomfort associated with certain eye conditions, such as cataracts or refractive errors, ultimately leading to a more comfortable and fulfilling lifestyle. Many individuals report immediate improvements in their vision following surgery, which can enhance their overall well-being and productivity.
Which Vision Correction Surgery is Right for You?
Choosing the appropriate vision correction surgery involves a careful evaluation of various factors, including your specific eye condition, lifestyle, and personal preferences. With advancements in medical technology, several options are available, such as LASIK, PRK, and implantable contact lenses, each offering distinct benefits and considerations. It is essential to consult with an experienced ophthalmologist who can assess your vision and overall eye health, guiding you through the decision-making process to identify the surgery that aligns best with your individual requirements and expectations.
When Is It Necessary and How Does It Work?
Understanding the circumstances that necessitate a particular action and the mechanisms behind its operation is crucial for effective decision-making. It is essential to identify the specific situations that warrant intervention, as well as to comprehend the underlying processes that facilitate its implementation. This knowledge not only aids in determining the appropriate timing for action but also enhances one's ability to navigate the complexities involved. By grasping how the system functions, individuals can make informed choices that align with their objectives and ensure successful outcomes.
Conclusion
Eye surgery represents a significant advancement in the field of ophthalmology, offering patients the opportunity to improve their vision and enhance their quality of life. With various techniques available, such as LASIK, cataract surgery, and corneal transplants, individuals suffering from a range of visual impairments can find tailored solutions to meet their specific needs. The success rates of these procedures have increased dramatically due to technological innovations and refined surgical techniques, allowing for quicker recovery times and minimal discomfort. As the field continues to evolve, eye surgery remains a vital option for those seeking to regain or enhance their vision, ultimately contributing to a better overall quality of life.

Ptosis (drooping eyelids)
Blepharoplasty (eyelid lift)
Eyelid tumors or cysts
Tearing disorders and blocked tear ducts
Orbital fractures or tumors
Eyelid malpositions (entropion, ectropion)
Oculoplastic surgeons blend surgical precision with a deep understanding of ocular health, making them uniquely qualified to handle both reconstructive and cosmetic procedures.
Functional vs. Cosmetic Oculoplastic Surgery
While many associate oculoplastic surgery with cosmetic procedures, it's important to note that a significant portion of these surgeries are medically necessary. Understanding the difference can guide expectations and insurance coverage.
Functional Procedures:
These address health-related concerns and may be covered by insurance. Examples include:
Correcting eyelid malpositions that interfere with vision
Removing tumors or lesions
Repairing damage from trauma or disease
Cosmetic Procedures:
Focused on enhancing appearance, these procedures may not be covered by insurance:
Cosmetic blepharoplasty (eyelid lift)
Brow lifts
Botox and dermal fillers around the eyes
Both types of procedures require a thorough consultation with a board-certified oculoplastic surgeon to determine the most suitable approach.
What to Expect During Consultation and Surgery
Choosing oculoplastic surgery begins with a detailed consultation. Your surgeon will evaluate your medical history, examine the eye area, and discuss your goals.
The Consultation Process:
Full assessment of eyelid function and structure
Imaging or tear duct tests, if necessary
Discussion of treatment options
Review of potential risks and benefits
Surgical Process:
Most oculoplastic surgeries are outpatient procedures performed under local anesthesia with sedation. Recovery time varies depending on the complexity of the procedure but generally involves minimal downtime.
Recovery and Aftercare
Proper post-surgical care is crucial for healing and optimal results. Patients are typically provided with detailed instructions to minimize discomfort and promote recovery.
General Aftercare Guidelines:
Use cold compresses to reduce swelling
Avoid strenuous activities for a few days
Take prescribed medications as directed
Keep the surgical area clean and dry
Attend follow-up appointments for monitoring
While some bruising and swelling are common, these effects usually subside within a week or two. Most patients return to normal activities within 7-10 days.
Benefits and Risks of Oculoplastic Surgery
Like all surgical procedures, oculoplastic surgery has both benefits and risks. Knowing these can help patients make confident, informed decisions.
Benefits:
Improved vision and eye comfort
Enhanced facial appearance and symmetry
Correction of deformities or trauma
Boost in self-confidence and quality of life
Potential Risks:
Infection or bleeding
Scarring or asymmetry
Temporary blurred vision
Anesthesia-related complications
Choosing an experienced oculoplastic surgeon significantly reduces the risk of complications and enhances overall outcomes.
Who is an Ideal Candidate for Oculoplastic Surgery?
Ideal candidates include individuals with functional issues affecting the eye area or those seeking aesthetic improvement. You may be a good candidate if you:
Experience droopy or heavy eyelids
Have a blocked tear duct or frequent eye infections
Suffer from orbital trauma or tumors
Wish to improve the aesthetic appearance of your eyes
A consultation with a qualified surgeon will confirm if oculoplastic surgery is right for your condition and expectations.
