Decided to read the bible all the way through since the last time I "did" it (much was skimmed or skipped and instead I watched doctor who from the library on my laptop, lol) was when I was like 14, I'm an intellectual and religions nerd, I am ostensibly Christian, and I'm trying to learn and grow in my spirituality beyond the typical but it's been so long since I read any of it that my recollection is almost all out of context and regurgitated, not an actual foundation for further thought and exploration.

CAGE SIZE

Cage size is incredibly important as hamsters needs a lot of space. If you cannot afford to give them the space they need, then the hard truth is that you should not have a hamster. Here are the minimums and recommendations of hamster cage sizes:

Hamster Hideout Minimum = 450 square inches / 3.1 square feet / 2903 square centimeters

Hamster Hideout Recommended = Larger than 650 square inches / 4.5 square feet / 4194 square centimeters

RSPCA Minimum = 450 square inches / 3.1 square feet / 2903 square centimeters

German Hamster Forum Minimum = 620 square inches / 3.9 square feet / 4000 square centimeters

German Hamster Forum Recommended = 1521 square inches / 10.5 square feet / 10,000 square centimeters

ASPCA Minimum = 200 square inches / 1.4 square feet / 1290 square centimeters (we disapprove of this minimum and consider it inhumane)

HSUS Minimum = 288 square inches / 2 square feet / 1858 square centimeters (we disapprove of this minimum and consider it inhumane)

Below are a collection of commercial cages that are inhumane to house hamsters in.

Small cages create stress, cause aggression, bar chewing, bar climbing, depression, and lethargy. These cages cannot hold adequate size wheels. The sizes are the equivalent of a human having a average bathroom sized house.

Below are cages that are suitable for hamsters. The 20 gallon below the 40 gallon is not suitable in size and is much to small for a hamster. I only included it in the photo to show the size difference of what a hamster should have.

WHEELS

The photos below depict the issues that come along with using dangerous wheels, and wheels that are much too small.

These wheels can cause injuries and death, as well as painful deformities.

The wheels below are safe and come in appropriate sizes for hamsters. I have photos of my former Syrian and my dwarf hamster in the same wheel (silent runner) to show just how much room they have.

And on the topic of hamster balls—I don't think they're necessarily bad if used correctly. If the hamster wants to go in it and run, that's fine. Just check in every few minutes to see if they want out or not. I personally don't like them as they're messy and I'd rather have my hamster free-roaming under supervision, but they can be useful when cleaning the cage. I don't find them necessary.

Below are unsafe beddings that can cause hair loss, respiratory infections, breathing problems, rash, strangulation, limb loss, and death. The topic of kaypok bedding is heavily debated as some consider it safe as the fibers are short and can be broken down, but the risk is still there for limbs to get tangled, which is why I discourage it. Some people also think that klin-dried pine bedding is safe, but this process only removes the water and not the toxins and the dangers are still there.

All of these are safe for use, though note that granule bedding does not allow for tunnel making. Other additions that shouldn't be used as the main bedding but are safe include are eco-earth, untreated organic soil, reptisand, disinfected play sand, and dried reptile moss that has been cleaned. Toilet paper is also a popular nesting material.

FOOD

Diet is important! Hamsters ideally should have 17%-19% protein, 4%-7% fat, and 6%-15% fiber. The problem? No commercial hamster food meets this requirement. So what do we do? We mix foods!

A popular and simple mix in the U.S. is a 2 pound bag of Mazuri Rat and Mouse food with a 2.5 pound bag of Higgins Sunburst, making the nutrition 18% protein, 6.78% fat, and 7.28% fiber.

ENRICHMENT

Toys! Toys! Toys! A happy hamster is a spoiled hamster. 🐹💕 Provide your hamster with a variety of different types of toys—different woods/twigs, hanging toys, climbing toys, sand baths, loofah toys, toilet paper tubes, cardboard boxes, etc. Not only do these chew toys increase happiness and are safe, they also promote chewing which is vital for an animal who's teeth are continuously growing. If left to grow without anything to wear it down, the teeth will keep the hamster from eating, or even puncture through the jaw/face. If the hamster isn't a big chewer, try hard treats that are safe for consumption like Whimzees, Wet Noses, Fruitables, and Apple Asses horse treats. If the hamster is elderly and has trouble eating hard foods, check-in with the vet regularly to examine the growth of teeth and see if trimming is needed.

BUT WHAT IF I'M ON A BUDGET?

Many hamster owners are and have started off very young with no job, so its understandable if you're limited by your parent's wallet. Be sure to lurk your local yard sales, craigslist/gumtree and mercari/ebay for cheap cages and hamster supplies. Be sure to choose suitable cages and use only plastic items so that they can be completely disinfected. Sign-up your email to your pet stores and stalk any sales, coupons, and price drops. DIYS are also an option for toys, cages, and bedding and they are all over the web. The big thing that shouldn't be bought secondhand is food and opened bedding. Food expires and bedding can carry other hamster scents/diseases. If you can't find a suitable cage within your budget, please wait to get a hamster until you can afford it or find one.

Also keep in mind once you have a hamster of what the monthly/bi-monthly cost of bedding and food should look like, and if you can afford a vet visit during an emergency.

Make money the easy way and beat the banks

If you suspect you’ve been conned by the banks for years, you’re right – we’ve been sold rubbish products that make money for them rather than us for far too long. However, as the French proverb goes, “success is the best revenge”. My book Beat the Banks shows you how to make money the easy way without their ‘help’. The reason I wrote Beat the Banks – and why I’m doing more and more workshops and seminars in managing your money and investing for your future – is because we need to know how to take control of our money and create our own wealth. No one else is going to do it for us. The good news, though, is that INVESTING IS NOT HARD! Really, that’s probably the biggest message I want to put over to everyone. Investing for yourself is quite straightforward and doesn’t need to take more than a few hours a year. In fact, on the whole, the simpler your approach to saving and investing, the better you’ll do in the long-run.     Simple investing rules If you just follow these simple rules and don’t do any more, you’ll do better with your money than most people in this country: Live below your means. This is what the majority of us really need to get our heads around. Not only should we not continue to live above our means – constantly borrowing on credit cards to fund overspending – but we should do even better than live within our means. We need to live below our means so that we have money left over to invest for our futures. So, if you make £1,000 a month, you should only be spending £900 a month or, better, £800 a month. The rest needs to go into savings and investments. Yes, really! Set up regular standing orders Set up regular standing orders (do it at the beginning of the month when you pay your other bills) into savings accounts and investments. Make it so that the money goes out just after you get paid so that you don’t have a chance to spend it first. This is what I call ‘paying yourself first’. You set an amount each month – however small – to go automatically from your account to a savings account and, ideally, some form of investment like a pension or stock market fund, and learn to live on what’s left over. After a while you won’t even notice the money going out. You will be so used to living on the smaller amount. Invest in a range of simple products. Two key words there: ‘range’ and ‘simple’. It’s really important to spread your money across at least three different ‘asset classes’ (like pension, stocks and shares, property, bonds etc) so that if one of them tanks you have the others to fall back on. Also, go for simple, cheap products – not complicated, expensive ones that you don’t understand. The simple ones (like index-tracking funds and stakeholder pensions) tend to perform better anyway so you’re quids in all round. Don’t go for get-rich-quick schemes … ever… and don’t invest in anything peddled to you by your bank or a free financial ‘adviser’ (i.e. salesperson). Use these rules: “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” and “never invest in anything you don’t understand – particularly after it has been explained to you more than once”. Leave your investments for years Be like warren buffet and don’t get spooked by big lows or over-excited by big highs in the markets. This goes for the property market as well as the stock market. Most investments that give you a good return over the long-term are likely to go up and down in the short-term. Keep your nerve. Unless the underlying value of something seems very wrong to you, you are generally best just leaving your money there during the downs as well as the ups. In fact, when the market is in a dip, that’s when it’s a really good idea to put more money in because it’s cheap. Seriously, that’s pretty much all you need to do – oh and stay debt-free where at all possible, including paying off your mortgage as fast as possible.   Time and compound interest are on your side It’s particularly true for young people. All I hear from people in their 20s and 30s is that they think they have no hope of a rich retirement and that they will never have property or financial security unless they manage to inherit a decent amount. It’s not true. As I’ve been explaining to many of them, it doesn’t take a lot to build up a really decent pot of money over the years – and that’s what they have more than anything… years… time for that money to grow! As I show in Beat the Banks, thanks to the joy and wonder of compound interest (another thing that everyone should get their heads around as early as possible), putting a relatively small amount of money every month into a well-performing investment product and leaving it there for years will give you a tidy sum at the end.   How compound interest works When you invest money you earn interest on it (or you should do anyway). The following year you earn interest on both the money you originally put in plus the interest you made during the previous year. The next year the same happens and so on and so on. Each year your money grows by a greater amount. For example, if you put £100 into something that gives you 10 per cent return each year, at the end of the first year you will have made £10. If you keep that money in there then you will make 10 per cent on £110, which is £11 – this is added to your total, meaning that you now have £121 earning interest. Then in the next year you will earn 10 per cent on £121, which is £12.10. So you can see that each year it goes up just that bit more. The two things you need to know about compound interest: Small differences in interest rates make a big difference in the long term. Saving regularly over long periods of time can build up a big sum of money. For example: Imagine putting £100 a month into something giving you 10 per cent a year for 40 years. Over forty years your meek £100 a month would turn into a roaring £559,461. Seriously – over half a million just by regularly putting £100 a month in. Clare Hollingworth, reporter who broke news about start of World War II, dies at 105

In early 1939, peace activist Clare Hollingworth arrived on the Polish-German border to aid Jews and other refugees fleeing from the Sudetenland, newly annexed by Nazi Germany. On a brief return to her native England, 27-year-old Hollingworth--who once professed to “enjoy being in a war”--was hired as a part-time correspondent in Katowice, Poland, for the London Daily Telegraph.

After three days on the job that August, the cub reporter landed one of the biggest journalistic scoops of the 20th century: Hitler’s imminent invasion of Poland, marking the outbreak of World War II.

Ms. Hollingworth, who died Jan. 10 at 105, had driven into Germany to get a better sense of the impending danger. Without divulging the reason, she asked to borrow a diplomatic vehicle from her ex-lover, the British consul in Katowice, knowing the Union Jack on its hood would get her across the heavily restricted border.

On the return leg, she was passed by dozens of German military dispatch riders on motorcycles.

“I was driving back along a valley and there was a Hessian screen up so you couldn’t look down into the valley,” she told the Telegraph more than 70 years later. “Suddenly, there was a great gust of wind which blew the sacking from its moorings, and I looked into the valley and saw scores, if not hundreds, of tanks.

“So when I got back I said, ‘Thank you for lending me your car.’ And he said, ‘Where did you go, old girl?’ So I said, ‘I went into Germany.’ He said, ‘Stop being funny.’ And I said, ‘What’s more, I got a very good story: The tanks are already lined up for invasion of Poland.’ He went upstairs and sent a top secret message to the Foreign Office.”

Ms. Hollingworth called the Telegraph correspondent in Warsaw, and he filed a front-page story published on Aug. 29, 1939, under the headline “1,000 tanks massed on Polish border. Ten divisions reported ready for swift stroke.” Three days later, she awoke to the sounds of German planes and Panzer tanks invading Poland. After notifying her editors, she called the British Embassy in Warsaw and declared, “It’s begun.”

So also began a five-decade career in which Ms. Hollingworth covered hostilities from Algeria to Vietnam, from Greece to Yemen. “No battlefield was complete” without her, the British author and war correspondent Tom Pocock once remarked.

Ms. Hollingworth, who also helped unmask British intelligence agent Kim Philby as a Soviet spy, died in Hong Kong, where she had lived since the 1980s.

Often dressed in a tailored safari suit and sometimes packing a pearl-handled revolver, Ms. Hollingworth marched with troops, witnessed firefights, traveled to rebel hideouts and rode along during aerial bombing runs. In Kashmir, motoring across a bridge that had come under shelling by Pakistani troops, she gushed to a colleague, “Now, this is what makes life worth living!”

She thrived on the adrenaline and on proving she could keep pace with the men who made up the vast majority of war correspondents.

During the North African desert campaign in World War II, British commander Bernard Montgomery (“something of a women-hater,” she later wrote) expelled Ms. Hollingworth from his press contingent, saying that women did not belong on the front lines. She then embedded with American troops under Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower’s command in Algiers.

“It was essential to be able to go without washing, sleep in the open desert and live on bully-beef and biscuits for days on end,” she recalled in “Front Lines” (1990), one of her five books. “Many male correspondents got themselves sent back to Cairo because they could not take it.”

To prepare herself, Ms. Hollingworth slept on her apartment floor. Although just a hair over 5 feet tall, she learned to parachute and pilot a plane. She could identify shell and bullet types from their in-flight acoustics.

During the blitzkrieg in Poland, she drove around the country for weeks to report on the aggression, staying just ahead of advancing Nazi troops. “When it grew too dark to drive, I stopped, ate some biscuits, took a pull of whisky, and curled up for the night with my electric torch and revolver on the seat beside me,” she told Garrett for his 2015 account of her life, “Of Fortunes and War.”

In the early 1960s, she reported for the British paper the Guardian on the Algerian guerrilla struggle against French rule. In his history of the Guardian, journalist Geoffrey Taylor described Ms. Hollingworth “literally marching toward the sound of gunfire and regularly walking alone through the casbah.”

When right-wing French paramilitaries stormed a hotel in Algiers and kidnapped a British reporter in 1962, Ms. Hollingworth rallied a group of foreign correspondents to fight back.

Pocock recalled in his book “East and West of Suez”: “Clare turned like Joan of Arc to the rest of us standing with our hands up--’Come on!’ she said, ‘We’re going too! They won’t shoot all the world’s press!’ So we all marched out and started climbing into the jeeps.” The fighters released the journalist.

Among her friends and contacts were Donald Maclean and Philby, members of Britain’s notorious Cambridge Five spy ring that provided intelligence to Moscow. In January 1963, Philby--who worked in British intelligence and also had a cover as a journalist--failed to show up at a Beirut dinner party that he and Ms. Hollingworth were scheduled to attend.

Amid deepening suspicions about Philby’s loyalties, Ms. Hollingworth tracked down port records and discovered that, on the night of the dinner, Philby had boarded a ship for Odessa in the course of defecting to the Soviet Union.

The scoop seemed so sensational that, fearing a libel suit and under pressure from the British government to conceal what would be one of the most sensational scandals of the Cold War, the Guardian’s editor sat on the article. Only when that editor was absent did Ms. Hollingworth persuade his deputy to run her story. Three months later, the government confirmed Philby’s defection.

Ms. Hollingworth’s last major posting came in 1973, when she was named the Telegraph’s China correspondent, covering the death of Mao Zedong and the power struggle that followed.

Late in life, she reflected on a career spent on the razor’s edge, noting that she was 900 feet from the King David Hotel in Jerusalem when Jewish terrorists bombed the building in 1946. Ninety-one people died in the blast.

“I enjoy action,” she told the Telegraph in 2011. “I’m not brave, I just enjoy it. I don’t know why. God made me like this. I’m not frightened.”

Ms. Hollingworth’s life was defined by an unquenchable wanderlust. In her 60s, while on assignment covering the relatively staid doings of the British Defense Ministry, she was known to show up at the office with a bed roll and ask her editors, “Any foreign trips going? Any wars?”
