Container Homes Gold Coast - 40ft Container homes.
What Are the Advantages of Shipping Container Homes?
Shipping container homes are durable, cost-effective, and customizable:
They can be more cost-effective than traditional housing. You can purchase a container home for as low as $10,000. They are typically more cost-effective than conventional housing because they require fewer building materials and labor to construct. You can lower the cost of customizing your container housing by renovating the dwelling using your DIY skills.
They’re quick to construct. Some contractors can build a shipping container home in under a month. However, hiring a professional to build your container dream home can be pricey. To avoid hefty construction costs altogether, you can purchase a prefabricated container home from a growing list of companies specializing in building prefab homes off-site.
They’re modular homes. Shipping container homes are easy to modify. You can build a home with a mix of 20- and 40-foot containers. You can also combine multiple containers to create a larger home with a living room, dining room, extra bedrooms, a second floor, or even a container guesthouse.
They’re durable. Manufacturers typically use corten steel to build shipping containers. This self-healing steel protects cargo during transport across bodies of water. Shipping container homes made from weathering steel can likely withstand inclement weather conditions better than traditional housing.
They can be mobile. You can use a dedicated shipping transportation service to pick up and relocate an off-the-grid single-container house anywhere in the world.
What Are the Disadvantages of Shipping Container Homes?
Shipping container homes have a few notable disadvantages:
Obtaining building permits can be difficult. As a relatively new phenomenon, it can be difficult to obtain the necessary permits to build your shipping container house in some regions. However, there are several places in the United States (including Texas, California, Colorado, and Oregon) and abroad (including China, New Zealand, and Costa Rica) that host shipping container homes and have regulations in place. Ask your local city planning office for more information about building codes, zoning restrictions, and permitting requirements for container housing.
Shipping containers are not always eco-friendly. Many proponents tout container living as a great way to recycle old containers, but some home buyers prefer to convert new containers into housing. Used shipping containers are more eco-friendly, depending on the history of use. Used containers can incur damage while transporting goods, or have a history of transporting dangerous chemicals. These factors make repurposed shipping containers a less ideal option for some potential container home buyers.
Modern appliances can be difficult. Unless you plan to live off-grid, you’ll need to find a reliable licensed electrician who is familiar with shipping container architecture to design and install custom electrical setups for your house. You’ll also need to hire a plumber to install the necessary plumbing work. If your location doesn’t have access to electricity, you may need to hire a contractor to install solar panels onto the roof.
They often need reinforcements. While storage containers are built out of durable steel, you can compromise their structural integrity with certain modifications—for instance, cutting holes for a door or large windows. While shipping containers can withstand certain weather conditions, the weight from heavy snow can cause the roof to bow if the corner castings aren’t strong enough. You will need to hire a contractor to reinforce load-bearing walls or install a sloped rooftop.
5 Ways to Prepare for Your Shipping Container Home
Here are some tips to prepare you for purchasing your first shipping container home.
1. Be prepared for the costs. Many people begin container building projects because they think it will be inexpensive. Shipping containers alone cost thousands of dollars, not including the labor costs for complex and custom construction. High-end shipping container homes or larger homes can cost as much as traditional housing. Keep your budget in mind before you begin shopping for container home designs.
2. Contact your city planning office. While traditional houses have zoning rules and building regulations, your local government may not have set regulations in place for container homes. Contact your city planning office and request information regarding regulations for non-traditional homes. Find out if there are any special considerations you need to make when designing your own container home plan.
3. Design with natural light in mind. Steel shipping containers do not have access to natural light. When designing your floor plan, consider installing glass doors or skylights to make your interior space look bright and open. If the space is too small, consider purchasing a high-cube container, which is slightly taller than a traditional shipping container.
4. Inspect your container before purchase. As with any big-ticket purchase, it’s important that you see your container home in person before you buy it. Look for dents in the siding, rusting on the exterior, and leaks, which can be expensive to fix during construction.
5. Note the limitations. Shipping container structures are made from heavy steel to transport goods, so they don’t feature the necessary accommodations for a traditional living area. Door holes, window holes, and snow on the roof can compromise the structural integrity of your container. Understand the limitations of the structure before making a purchase.

Reasons Behind The Popularity Of Maine Prefab Homes
Tumblr media
So you have decided to become a homeowner in Maine. This is a very important step in your life, so you need to make sure you know how to navigate it well.  You can either go the traditional site-built homes, or you can opt for Maine prefab homes which seem to be attracting the attention of many people lately.
There are various reasons why prefab homes are being preferred these days. The first one is that they are better for the environment. Since these homes are constructed in one central place before they are assembled on site, workers can settle close to the factory and commute a short distance instead of traveling to a potentially distant site every day. This results into less CO2 emissions. Prefabricated homes are also better for the environment since fewer materials are used in their construction and because they disturb the site less compared to the conventional construction.
Another reason behind the popularity of Maine prefab homes is that they are healthier. Since materials on construction sites are subjected to rain and snow, they can get covered in nasty environmental toxins such as mold, mildew, and rust. Even though it is possible for materials to get affected by these toxins indoors, they are less likely to get affected.
Prebuilt homes are also better for remote locations. If you come from a remote region, a prebuilt structure is a good option because it is built in one central location and then delivered. This alleviates the difficulty in finding contractors willing to travel a long distance to build a home. You simply need to find a good manufacturer near you to build for the prefab home of your dreams.

ADU Builders in Portland
If you're looking for Portland adu builders you've come to the right place. ADU construction is a growing field with numerous advantages. In addition to being energy efficient and environmentally friendly, ADUs are also affordable. Using prefabricated ADU construction can save you money on shipping costs. For example, if you want a single-story home, you can have a manufacturer build it off-site, and then have a separate builder finish it locally. However, you'll pay extra shipping costs to get a home built off-site, and those costs can be as much as $15 per square foot.
One of the best-known ADU builders in the Portland metro area is Shelter Solutions LLC. The company was founded by Joe Robertson, a Virginia Tech graduate. Joe has built more ADUs than any other builder in the area, and is a Certified Master Builder in Oregon and a Certified Aging-in-Place Contractor (NAHB). In addition to their exceptional customer service, Shelter Solutions is also an Energy Star Certified company.
ADU builders in Portland are able to provide a variety of services and designs. Some will provide prefab design packages for you, while others offer customized models. If you have your heart set on an ADU, the right builder can help you find the right design and construction method for your unique situation.
Accessory Dwelling Units are a great way to add more space and value to your home. You can choose from light and airy guest houses to rustic, cozy in-law suites. Whether you're looking to add an ADU to your existing home or want a separate unit for the elderly, ADUs are a great option.
ADU builders in Portland are a great option for homeowners who don't want to move from their neighborhood or lose the benefits of a mortgage. Some ADUs can cost up to $400 per square foot to build, but many owners save money by doing some of the finishing work themselves. These homes are also designed to age in place, so they can be used as a rental income source in the future.
The company has extensive experience in the construction of ADUs. ADUs can be built as a turnkey project or as a DIY project. You can also use a professional ADU builder to remodel an existing one. Superior ADUs in Portland offers free consultations and free estimates.
If you're interested in adding an ADU to your existing home, it's important to know about the building permit process. ADUs require a building permit and must be approved by the local city or county. There are also additional permit fees for water and sewer service that are necessary for the construction of ADUs.

Other Remote Living
By Lydia
The housing options we talked about above could be considered more “safe” options. They are very popular today due to their reliability. The next few options I am going to provide you with are a little more unheard of and unique. First up, we have a wohnwagen. A wohnwagon is a hybrid of an RV and a tiny home. It is powered by solar energy and made fully from recycled materials. The wohnwagon contains a large size bed with storage, a pull out bed, a bathroom, an open kitchen and dining area, It also has an awning and a retractable patio outside. This caravan style home was made for people who want to enjoy off grid, remote living while still having the ability to travel. Next is the EcoCapsule, a small egg-shaped home that went viral online in 2015. It contains rooftop solar panels and its own wind turbine that power the battery. The EcoCapsule is designed to be lived in by two people. The kitchen and bathroom are on the left side of the door and the dining table and bedroom are to the right. This home can be moved or dropped by a crane or helicopter anywhere the owner pleases.
Have you ever wanted to stop everything and start a new life somewhere where no one will find you? This can be defined as remote living or living off the grid. The definition of remote is “something that is far away in a place or time or a place that is located away from populated areas. This style of living is getting more and more popular each year. In 2017 it was estimated that over 180,000 families are living off the grid somewhere in a remote area. So you want to make the lifestyle change, what now?
Before someone jumps into a change this big, there are things people often forget to think about. What do you want the climate to be where you live? All four seasons, always cold, always hot? Do you enjoy the snow or the beach? How will you get water? You will need to find a dependable, clean water source to live. Some places are listed for a much lower price due to a lack of water. Laws can disrupt the plans of people wanting to live somewhere remote. Can you build or use the land? If you build somewhere there are certain codes that will need to be followed. You can also try and specifically find a place that has no existing building codes. Taxes can be a forgotten expense. The lower the property tax the better. When choosing where to live, zoning is very important. People should try their best to pick a property that can be applied for rezoning. Land price can make or break your plan. Is it affordable? Is it pricey? Can you find something completely free?
Up next, where in the world do you want to live? Obviously there are places all over the world to live remotely, but in the United States, some are better than others. Florida is a great option for remote living since the weather there is great for most of the year and the land is very affordable. Maine is one of the best places to live off the grid in the United States! They have an abundance of properties on the market and they are priced relatively low. They have many water sources and lots of timber to build with if needed. Although it does get cold in Maine, people who are currently living remotely there say you get past it. Montana gets cold but is very bearable if you are living in the mountains. North Dakota and Wyoming are very similar. All three states have very reasonably priced land and access to water. Almost anywhere in Oregon is good for remote living. Oregon is able to provide multiple seasons and timber. Texas is a very big state and has room for all the off grid living you would like. In some places water may be an issue, but it has great resources available for off grid living.
So, you have figured out where you want to live and the details that follow, but what are you going to live in? We hear about tiny houses, living on boats, cabins and more all the time. Throughout the past few years, many off the grid, remote living friendly homes have been created. First up we have “yurt-living.” A yurt is a style of a portable home that was once used by ancient nomadic tribes in Asia, mostly Mongolia. They are originally built as a circular structure and a one-room layout. Nowadays people have completely modernized the concept and have added lofts, modern kitchens, and walls to these large tents. They come in a range of sizes depending on the number of people planning to live there. A yurt can generally be set up on any flat chunk of land that is clear enough to fit it.
Next up is a shipping container home. It is exactly what it sounds like; these houses are made of the steel shipping containers that get carried on trains, ships, etc. Shipping containers can range in size and can be stacked on top of one another to make a multi-story home. There is an abundance of these containers available all over the world. These shipping container homes can be made into a very trendy, modern looking living space. Multiple states have already approved shipping container homes!
Third, is a prefab home. A prefab or prefabricated home is built in a factory, offsite and then shipped in pieces to wherever the customer wants. The concept of prefab homes was that people living in remote areas were able to have access to the same modern, trendy homes just like people who lived in the city. Although prefab homes are the most common looking living space, it is extremely convenient for the buyer.

Journal - weeHouse Is the Perfect Vacation Home for Eco-Conscious Architects
Architects: Showcase your next project through Architizer and sign up for our inspirational newsletter
Alchemy Architects, a small firm based in St. Paul, MN, has devoted their work to sustainable building practices — often through the process of prefabricated modular designs. By utilizing recycled and reused matters, along with building strategies that reduce waste, Alchemy rethinks the prototypical vacation home by striving for simplicity and minimal use of materials.
Their rustic, often oxidized buildings have a way of sitting harmoniously within their settings, while yielding a minimal carbon (and physical) footprint. Here, we take a closer look at the firm’s distinctive range of weeHouses, which exemplify the firm’s eco-conscious reputation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marfa weeHouse, Marfa, TX
Outside of Marfa, TX, the small artist colony featuring the minimalist works of Donald Judd, the Marfa weeHouse acts as a cool, calm retreat from West Texas’ harsh climate, and represents a more modest approach to vacation homes. Visually, the design mimics the form of Judd’s simple concrete slab sculptures in Marfa, while the rusty exterior borrows from the desert’s hues. The prefabricated house’s large awnings block excessive daylighting, while natural ventilation keeps the interiors cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arado weeHouse, St. Paul, MN
Alchemy’s original weeHouse provides a prefabricated, off-the-grid residence in the prairies outside of Minnesota’s Twin Cities. The original 336-square-foot house was built in a factory and delivered to the site. Cementitious siding clads the exterior while extensive glazings create a strong connection to the landscape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cawaja weeHouse, Ontario, Canada
Two modules, one horizontal and one vertical, make up this weeHouse in Ontario. At 1,200 square feet, it was designed as a prefab weeHouse prototype using 14-foot wide modules that were easily transported to the site. Conceived of as a four-season house, the weeHouse features stained pine “Corncrib” siding as well as oxidized copper green-painted siding, giving it a rustic appearance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Red Lodge weeHouse, Red Lodge, MT
Alchemy takes the traditional lodge typology and translates it into their simplified, tarnished aesthetic for this country retreat in Montana. The Red Lodge weeHouse contains two separate units, one “Pair,” which makes up the main living quarters, and a separate “Studio.” The units were prefabricated in a warehouse, transported by truck, and lifted into place. The house was designed with accessibility in mind, as the studio features a wheelchair accessible ramp for future guests.
Sonama weeHouse, Santa Rosa, CA
The Sonoma weeHouse was designed in Minnesota for a client in San Francisco, built in Oregon, and shipped to its Santa Rosa, CA site 90% complete. The client, an architect himself and Apple’s Senior Design Director, Real Estate and Development, was the project’s co-pilot with Geoffrey C. Warner, Alchemy’s principal architect. This small, ultra-minimal, high-end home is based on Alchemy’s weeHouse design, but was customized to meet the luxe finishing requirements the client requested.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
weeZero, Moab, UT
Combining the best of prefab modular design with recycled materials, the weeZero is Alchemy’s first net-zero energy retreat. The design incorporates a simple box-shaped structure clad in reused oxidized scrap metal, which blends in to the red-rock desert landscape. The house features water recycling, passive solar electricity, and solar thermal collectors to minimize its carbon footprint.

Reasons Why You Should Invest In New Hampshire Prefab Homes
Tumblr media
If you are planning to build a new home in New Hampshire, you should consider prefab homes. Most people mistake prefab homes for mobile homes, but they are not the same. They are quite different by design, quality and cost.  The following are some of the reasons why these homes might be a great option for you if you are looking to become a homeowner.
First of all, New Hampshire prefab homes can last as long as traditionally-built homes.  According to the Corporation for Enterprise Development, modern modular home last nearly as long as the traditionally-constructed homes built under modern construction standard. They are just as dependable and sturdy as most other homes built in recent years.
Another reason why you should consider prefab homes is that they are energy efficient. Prefabs that are built with today’s technological advancements are not just as energy efficient as many site-built homes, but they are often more energy efficient compared to similar traditionally-built homes. What this means is that owners of modern prefab homes can enjoy lower than average gas, electric, as well as alternative heating fuel bills every month.
Last but not least, New Hampshire prefab homes are environmentally friendly to build. These homes are built inside humidity and temperature controlled facilities instead of outside in the elements. For this reason, they require less protection and produce less construction waste while they are being built. As a matter of fact, prefabs produce 35 to 40 percent less waste compared to site-built homes during construction. This definitely plays a huge role in why they cost so much less to build compared to other types of homes.

Now for a reprisal of the Ledding Library in Milwaukie, Oregon.  I showed it to you in June 2012, but now it is undergoing a major renovation so this is its temporary location in a huge prefab building in a parking lot in a semi-industrial area.  The new library building is looking great - I will share it once complete.
Ledding Library is my home-away-from-home library.  I am lucky enough to be able to use two library systems - when my home Multnomah Library system does not have an item I want or the hold list is too long, I can check Clackamas libraries for the item and get it through the Ledding branch.

Until Charlottesville, I naively believed that I lived in an America making progress with our racist history, and was merely stuck in a moment of cultural hysteresis. Hysteresis, defined as the lagging of an effect behind its cause (think of the time it takes for your fifth-in-line car to move even after the light turns green), operated so that the effect of racial progress was lagging behind the seemingly inevitable righteousness of the civil rights movement. But I was wrong, and it was through this cracked lens that I read two books that reminded me that white privilege is alive and well in every bastion of our country, and most certainly in our books.
The more obvious of the two, Hell or High Water: Surviving Tibet’s Tsangpo River by Peter Heller is an account of a bunch of (relatively) rich white people paying a bunch of poor brown people to carry their shit and cook their meals while they kayak a remote river for fun. The author does his best to make the quest look heroic:
“I passed 100 prayer flags strung on a wire over the creek with the morning sun shining through them and thought how adventurers, the truest and the finest, were the least encumbered people I’d ever known, as they had the least to protect. The rest of us acquire not just material things but also education, careers, advancement, everything entailing politics and caution. We acquire lovers, spouses, children, homes. We repeat the moves that have succeeded before, and eventually, security triumphs over risk. The seven paddlers didn’t own anything. Most of them didn’t even have a car. Most of the time, they had no steady girl to go back to. They collected nothing but stories. Maybe freedom really is nothing left to lose.” (pg 251)
The tone deaf vision presented here is dumbfounding. The author seems to forget that these seven paddlers were the truest and finest because they were able to pay people to do the work of living while they got to frolic in a river. Sadly, Heller can’t correctly identify those with nothing left to lose even when they’re right in front of him.
“We dropped down to another fire, and this time the five porters looked vulnerable and poor - and startled. They had a little bit of tsampa, jars of tea. After all that climbing and descending, this was their meal. I thought of the relative feast the Sherpas were putting together (for the paddlers) up above, and I felt ashamed.” (pg 226)
When the porters get together towards the end of the journey and mutiny, demanding higher wages for the arduous journey, I was cheering for them, not for the paddlers insistent that they had been wronged. Adventure stories need to start acknowledging their place of privilege, and understanding that freedom exists not in the egotistical drive to be first or fastest, but in the ability to choose to do so.
The more insidious of the two is The Oregon Experiment, which presents a narrative so disgustingly elitist that were Republicans ever to read books, this would be the primer on which they could declare outright class warfare. The story follows a dislikable couple as they grudgingly move from New York to Oregon. While the professor husband misrepresents his research and beliefs to fuck the local baker, his depressed wife becomes intimate with a misguided local anarchist, Clay. While presenting an intellectually lazy analysis of anarchy and youth resistance, the couple uses everyone they can to get what they want (resulting in Clay’s pointless death), and in the conclusion they even admit as much:
“She betrayed Clay to rediscover her love for her husband. She betrayed him for (her husband’s) career, and her own, to get then back east where they belonged.” (pg. 328)
So the story ends with the author wanting the reader to root for characters engaged in simultaneous adultery while also contributing to the death of a young man, all so that they can get better jobs near their hometown. It’s a tough sell particularly in the wake of Charlottesville. Sorry Scribner, but I’m not going to cheer a tale of white people destroying everyone else to get on (an arbitrary and ultimately imaginary) top. It’s 2017 and we’ve heard that story before.
